Important Safety Information

Always be careful when using your TV receiver. To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, and other injuries, keep these safety precautions in mind when installing, using, and maintaining your machine.

• Read all safety and operating instructions before operating your TV.

• Keep the safety and operating instructions for future reference.

• Heed all warnings on the TV receiver and in the operating instructions.

• Follow all operating and use instructions.

• Unplug the TV receiver from the wall outlet before cleaning. Use a damp cloth; do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners.

• Never add any attachments and/or equipment without approval of the manufacturer. Such additions can increase the risk of fire, electric shock, or other personal injury.

• Do not use the TV receiver where contact with or immersion in water is a possibility, such as near bath tubs, sinks, washing machines, swimming pools, etc.

• Do not place the TV on an unstable cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table where it can fall. A falling TV can cause serious injury to a child or adult, and serious damage to the appliance. Use only with a cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table recommended by the manufacturer or sold with the TV. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when mounting the unit, and use a mounting accessory recommended by the manufacturer. Move the TV and cart with care. Quick stops, excessive force, and uneven surfaces can make the unit and cart unsteady and likely to overturn.

• Provide ventilation for the TV receiver. The unit is designed with slots in the cabinet for ventilation to protect it from overheating. Do not block these openings with any object, and do not place the TV receiver on a bed, sofa, rug, or other similar surface. Do not place it near a radiator or heat register. If you place the TV receiver on a rack or bookcase, ensure that there is adequate ventilation and that you’ve followed the manufacturer’s instructions for mounting.

• Operate your TV receiver only from the type of power source indicated on the marking label. If you are not sure of the type of power supplied to your home, consult your appliance dealer or local power company.

• Use only a grounded or polarized outlet. For your safety, this TV is equipped with a polarized alternating current line plug having one blade wider than the other. This plug will fit into the power outlet only one way. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, try reversing the plug. If the plug still does not fit, contact your electrician to replace your outlet.

• Protect the power cord. Power supply cords should be routed so that they won’t be walked on or pinched by objects placed on or against them. Pay particular attention to cords at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the unit.

• Unplug the TV from the wall outlet and disconnect the antenna or cable system during a lightning storm or when left unattended and unused for long periods of time. This will prevent damage to the unit due to lightning and power-line surges.

• Avoid overhead power lines. An outside antenna system should not be placed in the vicinity of overhead power lines or other electric light or power circuits or where it can fall into such power lines or circuits. When installing an outside antenna system, be extremely careful to keep from touching the power lines or circuits. Contact with such lines can be fatal.

• Do not overload the wall outlet or extension cords. Overloading can result in fire or electric shock.

• Do not insert anything through the openings in the unit, where they can touch dangerous voltage points or damage parts. Never spill liquid of any kind on the TV.

• Ground outdoor antennas. If an outside antenna or cable system is connected to the TV, be sure the antenna or cable system is grounded so as to provide some protection against voltage surges and built-up static charges. Section 810 of the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA No.70-1984, provides information about proper grounding of the mast and supporting structure, grounding of the lead-in wire to an antenna discharge unit, size of grounding conductors, location of antenna discharge unit, connection to grounding electrodes, and requirements for the grounding electrode.

• Do not attempt to service the TV yourself. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Unplug the unit from the wall outlet and refer servicing to qualified service personnel under the following conditions:

- when the power-supply cord or plug is damaged

- if liquid has been spilled on the unit or if objects have fallen into the unit

- if the TV has been exposed to rain or water

- if the TV does not operate normally by following the operating instructions

- if the TV has been dropped or the cabinet has been damaged

- when the TV exhibits a distinct change in performance

• If you make adjustments yourself, adjust only those controls that are covered by the operating instructions. Adjusting other controls may result in damage and will often require extensive work by a qualified technician to restore the TV to normal.

• When replacement parts are required, be sure the service technician uses replacement parts specified by the manufacturer or those that have the same characteristics as the original part. Unauthorized substitutions may result in additional damage to the unit.

• Upon completion of any service or repairs to this TV, ask the service technician to perform safety checks to determine that the TV is in a safe operating condition.

Familiarizing Yourself with The TV

Front Panel Buttons

The buttons on the front panel control your TV’s basic features, including the on-screen menu. To use the more advanced features, you must use the remote control.

Press to turn the TV on and off.

TIMER indicator

(For model PCJ533R)

When the TV is turned on, the TIMER indicator blinks ten times. This indicator illuminates when the TIMER mode is set to the “On” position after setting the clock and either the On timer or Off timer, with the remote control. Even if the power is turned off, this indicator stays lit. (Clock must be set before using this function.)

Remote Control Sensor

Aim the remote control towards this spot on the TV.

Press to increase or decrease the volume. Also used to select items on the on-screen menu.

CH ▼ and CH ▲

Press to change channels. Also press to highlight various items on the on-screen menu.

Press to see an on-screen menu of your TV's features.

TV/VIDEO

Press this button to display a menu of all the available signal sources. When the menu appears, use the CH buttons to highlight a particular source, and then press VOL+ to select it.

Used to connect an S-Video signal from a camcorder or a video game.

Used to connect a video signal from a camcorder or a video game.

Rear Panel Jacks

Use the rear panel jacks to connect an A/V component that will be connected continuously, such as a VCR or a laserdisc player.

Because there are two sets of input jacks, you can connect two different A/V components (i.e., a VCR and a laserdisc, 2 VCRs, etc.)

For more information on connecting equipment, see pages 2.1 – 2.7.

VHF/UHF

Connect to an antenna or to a cable TV system.

WIRELESS HEADPHONES

Connect a pair of wireless headphones here (optional)

SUPER VIDEO IN

S-Video signal from an S-VHS VCR or laserdisc player.

VIDEO INPUTS

Video signals from VCRs, laserdisc players and similar devices (Two sets are available: Video1 and Video2).

AUDIO INPUTS

Audio signals from VCRs, laserdisc players and similar devices.

AUDIO-VIDEO MONITOR OUTPUTS

These audio-video signals are identical to A/V signals being displayed on the big screen. (Typically used as the input signals for a recording VCR.) Note: The monitor out does not operate in DVD or DTV mode.

If you are using an off-air antenna (such as a roof antenna or “rabbit ears”) that has 300-ohm twin flat leads, follow the directions below.

Place the wires from the twin leads under the screws on the 300-75 ohm adaptor (not supplied). Use a screwdriver to tighten the screws.

Plug the adaptor into the VHF/UHF terminal on the bottom of the back panel.

These instructions assume that you have already connected your TV to an antenna or a cable TV system (according to the instructions on pages 2.1-2.3). Skip step 1 if you have not yet connected to an antenna or a cable system.

After you’ve made this connection, set the A/B switch to the “A” position for normal viewing. Set the A/B switch to the “B” position to view scrambled channels. (When you set the A/B switch to “B,” you will need to tune your TV to the cable box’s output channel, which is usually channel 3 or 4.)

Unplug the cable or antenna from the back of the TV.

Connect a coaxial cable between the ANTENNA OUT terminal on the VCR and the antenna terminal on the TV.

Connect a set of audio cables between the AUDIO OUT jacks on the VCR and the AUDIO jacks on the TV.

Connect a video cable between the VIDEO OUT jack on the VCR and the VIDEO jack on the TV.

Follow the instructions in “Viewing a VCR or Camcorder Tape” to view your VCR tape.

If you have a “mono” (non-stereo) VCR, use the Y-connector (supplied) to hook up to the left and right audio input jacks of the TV. If your VCR is stereo, you must connect two cables.

Connecting an S-VHS VCR

Your Samsung TV can be connected to an S-Video signal from an S-VHS VCR. (This connection delivers a better picture as compared to a standard VHS VCR.)

Connecting a Second VCR to Record from the TV

Your TV can send out signals of its picture and sound to be recorded by a second VCR. To do this, connect your second VCR as follows:

Connect a set of audio cables between the AUDIO OUT jacks on the TV and the AUDIO IN jacks on the VCR.

An S-video cable is usually included with an S-VHS VCR. (If not, check your local electronics store.)

Connect a video cable between the VIDEO OUT jack on the TV and the VIDEO IN jack on the VCR.

Refer to your VCR’s instructions for more information about how to record using this kind of connection.

(The VCR input jacks might be either on the front or on back of the VCR.)

Connecting a Digital TV Set-Top Box

(For models HCJ552W/HCJ652W) Connect the Y, Pb, and Pr video outputs of the set-top box to their corresponding inputs on

the TV. Next, connect the Left and Right audio from the set-top box to the corresponding L and R terminals on the TV. (The connections for a typical set-top box are shown below.)

When switching to the DTV mode, either 480p or 1080i format is automatically selected according to the input signal.

Locate the A/V output jacks on the camcorder. They are usually found on the side or back of the camcorder.

Connecting a Camcorder

If the color appears spread out or “smeared” on the screen, the convergence probably needs alignment. Be sure to use the remote control for the convergence adjustments. (The Convergence Adjustment cannot be made by using the control buttons on the front panel.)

While “Red” is highlighted (letters are blue color), press the VOL+ button: A crosshair pattern will appear on the screen. If either a vertical or a horizontal red line is visible, then the convergence needs alignment.

If a horizontal red line is visible, use CH▲ and CH▼ buttons to move the line so that it is superimposed on the horizontal centerline (i.e., make a single horizontal line that is as white as possible.)

Memorizing the Channels

Your TV can memorize and store all of the available channels for both “off-air” (antenna) and cable channels. After the available channels are memorized, use the CH ▲ and CH ▼ buttons to scan through the channels. This eliminates the need to change channels by entering the channel digits. There are three steps for memorizing channels: selecting a broadcast source, memorizing the channels (automatic) and adding and deleting channels (manual).

Selecting the Video Signal-source

Before your television can begin memorizing the available channels, you must specify the type of signal source that is connected to the TV (i.e., an antenna or a cable system).

Changing Channels

Using the Channel Buttons

Press the CH ▲ or CH ▼ button to change channels.

When you press CH ▲ or CH ▼, the TV changes channels in sequence. You will see all the channels that the TV has memorized. (The TV must have memorized at least three channels.) You will not see channels that were either erased or not memorized.

Directly Accessing Channels

Use the number buttons to quickly tune to any channel.

Press the number buttons to go directly to a channel. For example, to select channel 27, press “2,” then “7.” The TV will change channels when you press the second number.

When you use the number buttons, you can directly select channels that were either erased or not memorized.

To select a channel over 100, press the +100 button. (For channel 122, press “+100,” then “2,” then “2.”)

To change to single-digit channels (0–9) faster, press “0” before the single digit. (For channel “4,” press “0,” then “4.”)

Press ADD/ERASE: Repeatedly pressing this button will alternate between “Channel added” and “Channel erased.”

Press MENU to exit.

You can view any channel (including an erased channel) by using the number buttons on the remote control.

Use the number buttons to directly select the channel that will be added or erased.

Using Automatic Picture Settings

Your Samsung TV has two automatic picture settings (“Standard” and “Mild”) that are preset at the factory. You can activate either Standard or Mild by pressing P.Mode (or by making a selection from the menu). Or, you can select “Custom” which automatically recalls your personalized picture settings.

• Choose Standard for the standard factory settings.

• Choose Mild (“Mild Contrast”) when viewing the TV in low light, or when playing video games.

• Choose Custom if you want to adjust the settings accordings to personal preference (see “Customizing the Picture, page 3.10).

Special Audio Options: Dolby Surround, MTS, and Headphones

Depending on the particular type of audio that is being broadcast, you can listen to any of three modes: Mono, Stereo and SAP (Secondary Audio Programming, which is typically a foreign-language translation).

The Dolby Surround options (3D-Phonic and Dolby Prologic) simulate the ambience of a stadium or a movie theater. The wireless headphone option is especially useful when simultaneously watching the main screen and the PIP window.

Your Samsung TV can create a “surround” effect such that the sound seems to come from all directions.

Select the mode: Press the CH▼ button to highlight “Mode.” Next, press VOL+ repeatedly until the appropriate mode appears (“Wide,” “Phantom,” or “Normal”). Some recommended settings:

Phantom : Selected when the center speaker is either not present or not used.

In Phantom Mode, the center sound is output through both left and right speakers.

Normal : Selected when the center speaker is smaller than the main TV speakers. In Normal

Mode, the sound of the center channel is output through both left and right speakers.

Wide : Selected when the center speaker is larger than the TV speaker. In Wide Mode, the

sound of center channel is output through only the center speaker.

After selecting the mode, press the CH▼ button, and highlight “Center.” Next, press VOL+ or VOL- and, depending on personal preference, select any value between -10 and +10. Follow a similar procedure for “Rear” and “Delay.” (Some trial-and-error experimenting is necessary to find the optimal setting, which will vary according to individual preference).

After entering values for “Center,” “Rear,” and “Delay,” use the CH▼ and VOL+ buttons to activate “Test.” During “Test,” a tone will cycle through the speakers so you can hear the surround effect and make additional changes as needed.

(See next section.)

Note: These categories consist of two separate groups: TV-Y and TV-Y7 (young children through age 7), and TV-G through TV-MA (everybody else). The TV-Y and TV-Y7 categories are colored green.

The restrictions for these two groups work independently: If a household includes very young children as well as young adults, the TV guidelines must be set up separately for each age group. (See next step.)

How to Set up Restrictions using the MPAA Ratings:G, PG, PG13, R, NC-17, X

The MPAA rating system uses the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) system, and its main application is for movies. (Eventually, movie videocassettes will be encoded with MPAA ratings.) When the V-Chip lock is on, the TV will automatically block any programs that are coded with objectionable ratings (either MPAA or TV-Ratings).

How to set the FV, D, L, S and V sub-ratings. First, highlight one of these TV-Ratings: TV-Y7, TV-PG, TV-14 or TV-MA (See Step 4, on previous page). Next, while the TV-Rating is highlighted (BLUE), repeatedly press the VOL+ button. This will cycle through the

available sub-ratings (FV,L, S, D or V). A blinking letter (“U” or “B”) will be displayed for each sub-rating. While the “U” or “B” is blinking, press

CH ▲ or CH ▼ to change the sub-rating. Press MENU once to save the TV guidelines. A TV-Rating will be highlighted (BLUE), and no letters will blink.

To exit this screen, press MENU again. To select a different TV-Rating, press CH ▲or CH ▼and then repeat the process.

Note: The V-chip will automatically block certain categories that are “More restrictive”. For example, if you block “L” sub-rating in TV-PG, then the “L” sub-ratings in TV-14 and TV-MA will automatically be blocked.

How to Reset the TV after the V-Chip Blocks a Channel (“Emergency Escape”)

If the TV is tuned to a restricted channel, the V-Chip will block it. The screen will go blank and the following message will appear: “Excessive rating.”

To resume normal viewing, tune to a different channel using the number buttons. Under certain conditions (depending on the rating of the local TV programs) the V-Chip might lock out all the channels. In this case, use the V-Chip button for an “emergency escape”:

Press the V-chip button on the remote control. Enter your PIN number, and press VOL+ to temporarily disable the V-Chip Lock.

Repeatedly press the CH ▼ button to highlight a particular MPAA category. (When a category is highlighted, its color changes to blue.) Pressing the CH ▼ button will cycle through the MPAA categories:

How to Set up Your PC Software (Windows only)

The Windows display-settings for a typical computer are shown below. But the actual screens on your PC will probably be different, depending upon your particular version of Windows and your particular video card. But even if your actual screens look different, the same, basic set-up information will apply in almost all cases. (If not, contact your computer manufacturer or Samsung Dealer.)

First, click on “Settings” on the Windows start menu.

While “Settings” is highlighted, move the cursor so that “control panel” is highlighted.

When the control panel screen appears, click on “Display” and a display dialog-box will appear.

Navigate to the “settings” tab on the display dialog-box.

The two key variables that apply the TVPC interface are “resolution” and “colors.” The correct settings for these two variables are:

* Size (sometimes called “resolution”): 640 x 480 pixels

* Color: “24-bit” color (might also be expressed as “16 million colors”)Shown at left is a typical screen for “Display” dialog box.

If a vertical-frequency option exists on your display settings dialog box, the correct value is “60” or “60 Hz.” Otherwise, just click “OK” and exit the dialog box.

Notes:

• When this TV is used as a PC display, 24-bit color is supported (over 16 million colors).

• Your PC display screen might appear different, depending on the manufacturer (and depending on your particular version of Windows). Check your PC instruction book for information about connecting your PC to a TV display-monitor.

• If a vertical and horizontal frequency-select mode exists, select 60Hz (vertical) and 31.5kHZ (horizontal).

• In some cases, abnormal signals (such as stripes) might appear on the screen when the PC power is turned off (or if the PC is disconnected). If so, press the TV/VIDEO button to enter the TV mode. Also, make sure that the PC is connected.

• Connect only a PC monitor to the monitor output port while viewing the PC screen. (Otherwise, random signals might appear).

Notes: Both screen position and size will vary, depending on the type of PC monitor and its resolution. The table below shows all of the display modes that are supported:

The nine position-control buttons (number keys) define the area of the screen that will be enlarged. To restore the screen to normal size, press S.ENLARGE.

Repeatedly pressing S.ENLARGE will toggle between the enlarged area and the normal-sized screen.

Enlarge a portion of the screen by pressing the number keys on the remote control.

For example, pressing ”1” enlarges the upper-left area.

To shift the position of the enlarged screen: Press either

How to Overscan the Image

Pressing OVERSCAN will cause the image to alternate between normal size and a slightly magnified size. Overscan is useful when the display is used for presentations, where the onscreen image probably has lots of text and numbers.

How to Stop the Action While Viewing a Digital Video File (MPEG, AVI, ETC)

Press STILL, and the display will alternate between a paused scene and ordinary playback of the video file.

• Do not place the TV near extremely hot, cold, humid or dusty places.

• Do not place the TV near appliances with electric motors that create magnetic fields, such as vacuum cleaners.

• Keep the ventilation openings clear; do not place the TV on a soft surface, such as cloth or paper.

• Place the TV in a vertical position only.

Liquids

• Do not handle liquids near or on the TV. Liquids that spill into it can cause serious damage.

Cabinet

• Never open the cabinet or touch the parts inside.

• Wipe your TV with a clean, dry cloth. Never use water, cleaning fluids, wax, or chemicals.

• Do not put heavy objects on top of the cabinet.

Temperature

• If your TV is suddenly moved from a cold to a warm place, unplug the power cord, and allow at least two hours for moisture that may have formed inside the unit to dry completely.

Using Your TV in Another Country

If you plan to take your TV with you to a foreign country, please be aware of the different television systems that are in use around the world. A TV designed for one system may not work properly with another system due to differences in the TV channel frequencies
