1. Precautions

1-1. Safety Precautions

Follow these safety, servicing, and ESD precautions to prevent damage and to protect against potential hazards such as electrical shock.

1-1-1. Warnings

For continued safety, do not attempt to modify any circuitry.

1-1-2. Servicing the LCD TV

When servicing the LCD TV, Disconnect the AC line cord from the AC outlet.

It is essential that service technicians have an accurate voltage meter available at all times.

2. Check the calibration of this meter periodically.

1-1-3. Fire and Shock Hazard

Before returning the LCD TV to the user, perform the following safety checks:

Inspect each lead dress to make certain that the leads are not pinched or that hardware is not lodged between the

1. chassis and other metal parts in the LCD TV.

Inspect all protective devices such as nonmetallic control knobs, insulating materials, cabinet backs, adjustment and

2. compartment covers or shields, isolation resistor capacitor networks, mechanical insulators, etc.

Leakage Current Hot Check (Figure 1-1):

3. WARNING : Do not use an isolation transformer during this test. Use a leakage current tester or a metering system that complies with American National Standards Institute (ANSI C101.1, Leakage Current for Appliances), and Underwriters Laboratories (UL Publication UL1410, 59.7).

With the unit completely reassembled, plug the AC line cord directly into a 120V AC outlet. With the unit’s AC switch

etc.) and all exposed metal parts, including: metal cabinets, screwheads and control shafts. The current measured should not exceed 0.5 milliamp. Reverse the power-plug prongs in the AC outlet and repeat the test.

1-1-4. Product Safety Notices

Some electrical and mechanical parts have special safety related characteristics which are often not evident from visual inspection. The protection they give may not be obtained by replacing them with components rated for higher voltage, wattage, etc. Parts that have special safety characteristics are identied by on schematics and parts lists. A substitute replacement that does not have the same safety characteristics as the recommended replacement part might create

shock, re and/or other hazards. Product safety is under review continuously and new instructions are issued whenever

appropriate.

WARNING: An electrolytic capacitor installed with the wrong polarity might explode. Caution: Before servicing units covered by this service manual, read and follow the Safety Precautions section of

this manual.

Note:

1-2-1 General Servicing Precautions

Always unplug the unit’s AC power cord from the AC power source and disconnect the DC Power Jack before attempting to: (a) remove or reinstall any component or assembly, (b) disconnect PCB plugs or connectors, (c) connect a test component in parallel with an electrolytic capacitor.

Some components are raised above the printed circuit board for safety. An insulation tube or tape is sometimes used. The internal wiring is sometimes clamped to prevent contact with thermally hot components. Reinstall all such elements to their original position.

After servicing, always check that the screws, components and wiring have been correctly reinstalled. Make sure that

the area around the serviced part has not been damaged.

Check the insulation between the blades of the AC plug and accessible conductive parts (examples: metal panels, input terminals and earphone jacks).

Insulation Checking Procedure: Disconnect the power cord from the AC source and turn the power switch ON. Connect an insulation resistance meter (500 V) to the blades of the AC plug. The insulation resistance between each blade of the AC plug and accessible conductive parts (see above) should be greater than 1 mega ohm.

Always connect a test instrument’s ground lead to the instrument chassis ground before connecting the positive lead; always remove the instrument’s ground lead last.

If unforeseen circumstances create conict between the following servicing precautions and any of the

safety precautions, always follow the safety precautions.

1-3. Electrostatically Sensitive Devices (ESD) Precautions

Some semiconductor (solid state) devices can be easily damaged by static electricity. Such components are commonly

called Electrostatically Sensitive Devices (ESD). Examples of typical ESD are integrated circuits and some eld-effect

transistors. The following techniques will reduce the incidence of component damage caused by static electricity.

Immediately before handling any semiconductor components or assemblies, drain the electrostatic charge from your body by touching a known earth ground. Alternatively, wear a discharging wrist-strap device. To avoid a shock hazard, be sure to remove the wrist strap before applying power to the LCD TV.

After removing an ESD-equipped assembly, place it on a conductive surface such as aluminum foil to prevent accumulation of an electrostatic charge.

Do not use freon-propelled chemicals. These can generate electrical charges sufcient to damage ESDs.

Use only a grounded-tip soldering iron to solder or desolder ESDs.

Use only an anti-static solder removal device. Some solder removal devices not classied as “anti-static” can generate electrical charges sufcient to damage ESDs.

Do not remove a replacement ESD from its protective package until you are ready to install it. Most replacement ESDs

are packaged with leads that are electrically shorted together by conductive foam, aluminum foil or other conductive materials.

Immediately before removing the protective material from the leads of a replacement ESD, touch the protective material to the chassis or circuit assembly into which the device will be installed. Caution: Be sure no power is applied to the chassis or circuit and observe all other safety precautions.

Minimize body motions when handling unpackaged replacement ESDs. Motions such as brushing clothes together, or lifting your foot from a carpeted oor can generate enough static electricity to damage an ESD.

1-4. Installation Precautions

For safety reasons, more than a people are required for carrying the product.

Keep the power cord away from any heat emitting devices, as a melted covering may cause re or electric shock.

Do not place the product in areas with poor ventilation such as a bookshelf or closet. The increased internal

temperature may cause re.

Bend the external antenna cable when connecting it to the product. This is a measure to protect it from being exposed

to moisture. Otherwise, it may cause a re or electric shock.

Make sure to turn the power off and unplug the power cord from the outlet before repositioning the product. Also check

the antenna cable or the external connectors if they are fully unplugged. Damage to the cord may cause re or electric

shock.

Keep the antenna far away from any high-voltage cables and install it rmly. Contact with the highvoltage cable or the

antenna falling over may cause re or electric shock.

When installing the product, leave enough space (0.1m) between the product and the wall for ventilation purposes.

A rise in temperature within the product may cause re.

This section of the service manual describes the disassembly and reassembly procedures for the LN40A450C1H LCD TV.

WARNING: This LCD TV contains electrostatically sensitive devices. Use caution when handling these components.

3-1. Disassembly and Reassembly

Cautions: 1. Disconnect the LCD TV from the power source before disassembly.

2. Follow these directions carefully; never use metal instruments to pry apart the cabinet.

** The reference of disassembly is for 40”. 26” is very similiar with 40”.

4-2. Alignments and Adjustments

4-2-1. General Alignment Instuction

Usually, a color LCD-TV needs only slight touch-up adjustment upon installation.

1. Check the basic characteristics such as height, horizontal and vertical sync.

Use the specied test equipment or its equivalent.

Correct impedance matching is essential.

Avoid overload. Excessive signal from a sweep generator might overload the front-end

4. of the TV. When inserting signal markers, do not allow the marker generator to distort test result.

Connect the TV only to an AC power source with voltage and frequency as specied on

5. the backcover nameplate.

Do not attempt to connect or disconnect any wire while the TV is turned on. Make sure

6. that the power cord is disconnected before replacing any parts.

To protect against shock hazard, use an isolation transformer.

Minimum Volume Level setting user can set in Stand alone Hotel Mode (Non-Interactive)

TV screen will be blank regardless if a Video Signal is fed or not (in External AV or Component input).

To select whether or not the function of AV or Component Jack ID is active. For Music Mode, even if AV or Component video Jack is not inserted (no ID), AV or Component should be active in OSD Menu so that users select AV mode or Component mode. For example, if AV is Off, the function of AV ID function is disabled and the AV mode is always active in OSD Menu

Method of Color Calibration (AV)

1) Apply the NTSC Lattice (N0. 3) pattern signal to the AV IN 1 port

2) Press the Source key to switch to “AV1” mode

3) Enter Service mode

4) Select the “Calibration” menu

5) Select the “AV Calibration” menu.

6) In “AV Calibration Off” status, press the “ ” key to perform Calibration.

7) When Calibration is complete, it returns to the high-level menu.

8) You can see the change of the “AV Calibration” status from Failure to Success.



Method of Color Calibration (Component)

1) Apply the 720p Lattice (N0. 6) pattern signal to the Component IN 1 port

2) Press the Source key to switch to “Component1” mode

3) Enter Service mode

4) Select the “Calibration” menu

5) Select the “Comp Calibration” menu.

4-8-1 USB Download Method

Samsung may offer upgrades for TV’s rmware in the future. Please contact the Samsung call center at

1-800-SAMSUNG (7267864) to receive information about downloading upgrades and using a USB drive.

Upgrades will be possible by connecting a USB drive to the USB port located on located on the back of your TV.

4-8-2 Hotel Option

Instruction

This TV is provided with interactive functionality through a set-back box (SBB/STB) connected to the TV, and with other TVs in a computer controlled system for hotels and other hospitality businesses.

Interactive : When TV is powered-up initially it sends command to identify SBB/STB, if identied TV switches to ONLINE

mode and full control is through SBB/STB. In ONLINE TV stops receiving IR(Samsung remote) commands and acts according to interface protocol.

Stand-Alone: If SBB/STB is not identied, TV should be switched to STAND-ALONE mode with restricted operation.

Operational Modes

When this TV (in Hotel mode) is operated with a SBB/STB, it is in one of two states

ONLINE or STAND-ALONE. In the STAND-ALONE state, the TV will act as a Hotel TV, but without active communication. This is to prevent guests from trying to cheat the system by disconnecting the SBB/STB.

To set the details for Stand-alone or interactive mode, refer to page 15(Setting the hotel option data : Stand-alone mode and Interactive mode)

- Some operations may be restricted to prevents guests from “cheating” the TV system.

- No main menu(Interactive mode) or Channel Menu, Plug & Play in Main Menu(Stand-Alone mode)

Connecting the TV with STB (SBB)

Connect the [DATA] jack of the TV to the [ETH MODEM] jack of the STB(SBB) with the RJ12 cable.

- Use data communication.

Connect the [5Vdc/2.5A(12Vdc/1.5A)] jack of the TV to the [DC-POWER] jack of the STB (SBB) with the DC cable.

- The supported jack type differs depending on the SBB (or STB) model.

- TV Jack Type: DC Power Jack of 6.5 Ø

- Some STB (SBB) devices are not compatible with the data cable supplied with the TV.

Warning

When you use the DC power output jack, you have to check the standard output power of STB(SBB) and you should use the DC power within the standard output(5Vdc/2.5A, 12Vdc/1.5A).

- For 5V SBB, SBB load current must not exceed 2.5A.

- For 12V SBB, SBB load current must not exceed 1.5A.

- The initial output is 5V.

- For 12V SBB, you have to change the output voltage to 12V in order to use the power.

Changing the Output Voltage

Press the POWER button.

- The TV is powered on.

Press the following remote control buttons in order.

INFO MEMU 0 1 EXIT

- The Hotel Option menu appears.

Press the ▲ or ▼ button to select “DC Power Output”.

Press the ◄ or ►button to select “12V” or “5V”.

Plug out and then plug in the power cord again.

- The voltage change is applied when you turn the TV on again after changing the Factory Option setting.

Connecting the Bathroom Speakers

You can install the Bathroom Speakers in one of the following 2 methods.

Connecting through the Variable Output (available without an external amplier)

Connect the VARIABLE AUDIO [R-AUDIO-L] port of the TV and the Bathroom Wall Speakers of the hotel.

2. Connect the [VOL-CTRL] jack of the TV and the Volume Control Box Switch port of the Bathroom Wall of the hotel.

- The maximum speaker output is 4W (2W+2W), 8Ω.

Installing the Volume Control

- If you congure the Volume Control Box as shown by the gure, you can control the volume of bathroom speakers.

- The jack that is connected from the Volume Control Box to the TV is a normal Phone jack.

- Volume Control Box switch consists of Tact switch.

- Setting the Sub AMP Mode

- 0: Turns the Sub AMP function off (PWM off).

- 1: Determines the Sub volume according to the main volume control. That is, the sub volume is determined according to the Power On Volume, the Min Volume, and the Max Volume values of the Hotel Mode.

- 2: Determines the volume according to the bathroom control panel setting.

Variable Output Port Specications

L: 8Ω, 2W / R: 8Ω, 2W

Speaker Wire: Use speaker cable no more than 82 feet (25m) in length.

Connect the PC IN [PC] / [AUDIO] port of the TV to the PC/AUDIO port of the RJP.

Connect the AV IN [VIDEO]/[R-AUDIO-L] port of the TV to the RCA port of the RJP.

Connect the S-VIDEO / AV IN[R-AUDIO-L] port of the TV to the S-VIDEO port of the RJP.

- You cannot connect and use the AV and S-VIDEO ports at the same time.

Connect the [HDMI] port of the TV and the HDMI port of the RJP.

Connect the EX-LINK port of the TV and the RS/232 port of the RJP.

- The RJP (Remote Jack Pack) compatible with this Samsung TV is TeleAdapt TA-7610.

RJP(Remote Jack Pack)

RJP stands for Remote Jack Pack. RJP is a hardware module having different Audio Video inputs(A/V, S-Video, Audio, PC and HDMI) and corresponding outputs. The corresponding output sources are connected from RJP to TV. The RJP communicates with the TV via RS232. Hot Plug & Play is a function which allows the hotel guest to connect an external source to the RJP. RJP communicates with TV by sending messages regarding Active/Inactive sources. TV will switch to the Active external source as per the priority set by the User.

Setting the Time

The time is entered

-Press the remote control button to select “Clock set” and set up the time.

-Once the time is set, the World Time is automatically updated.

Setting the Interactive Mode Time

- If the Hotel System transmits the time information, the time

is set automatically.

- If the Hotel System does not transmit the time information,

the time cannot be displayed.

- If the time is set, Clock will be displayed on the front panel.

Connecting the Data Cable

Features

Copying the TV Data to the Clone remote

- Set up the TV Install Data.

- Connect the cable between the TV and the Clone as

shown by the gure.

- If you press the Receive key of the Clone transmitter,

the OSD shown by the gure is displayed and the copy operation begins.

- Wait until the OSD progress bar reaches 100% and data

transmission is complete.

Copying the Clone Data to the TV

(You can copy data through the cable. You can copy data more stable and faster using the cable.)

- Press the SEND button to start copying.

If there are communication interruption during processing download or upload. Push same bottom (send or receive) to EXIT processing and try it again.

- Turn on the TV where the Clone Data will be copied to.

- The copy operation begins showing the OSD as shown

in the gure.

- Wait until the OSD progress bar reaches 100% and the

data transmission is complete.

Warning to Clone remocon operation

- If error occurs during transmitting data to Clone remocon, you should transmit it again to complete data copy.

And please turn off and on AC power to reect copied data on TV.

- During transmitting data through wire,be careful not to generate an error when a wire connection/ disconnection.

- Data is able to be transmitted by Clone remocon only when Hotel mode is on.
