AB2 Written Eco-document acompanying the products
Cong ratulation s! You have just purcha sed a TCO'95 app roved and labelled product! Your
choice has provided you with a product developed for professional use. Your purchase has also
contributed to reducing the burden on the environment and to the further develo pment of
envir onmenta lly-adapted electro nic products.
Why do we have environmentally-labelled monitors?
In many countries, environmental labelling has become an established method for encouraging
the ad aptation of goods and services to th e en vironmen t.The main prob lem as far as m onitors
and other electro nic equipmen t are con cerned is that en vironmen tally ha rmful substances are
used both in the pro du cts and during th eir manufacture. Since it has no t been possible so far
for the majority of electronic equipment to be recycled in a satisfactory way, most of these
poten tially damaging substan ces sooner or later enter Na ture.
Ther e are also oth er characteristics of a monitor, such as ener gy consumption levels, tha t are
impo rtant from bo th the working and natural environ ment viewpoi nts. Since a ll typ es of
convention al el ectricity generation ha ve a negative effect on the en vironme nt (acidic and
climate- influencin g emissions, radioactive waste, etc.) it is vital to conserve energy. Electr oni c
equipme nt in offices con sumes an enormo us amo unt of en erg y, since it is often ro utinely left
running continuously.
What does labelling involve?
This product mee ts the requiremen ts for the TCO '95 scheme, whi ch provi des for in ternation al
envir onm enta l labe llin g of mon itors. The la be lling sch eme wa s deve lop ed a s a joint effort by the
TCO (The Swedish Confed era tion of Pr ofessional Emplo yees), Na turskyddsforeningen (Th e
Swed ish Society for Nature Con serva tion) and NUTE K (The National Board for Industrial and
Technical Development in Sweden).
The re qu irements cover a wid e ra ng e of issues: envir on ment, ergonomics, usab ility, emission
of electrical and m agn etic fields, energy consum ption and electrical and fire safety.
The en vironme ntal deman ds concern amon g other thing s restrictions on the presen ce and use
of hea vy metals, brominate d an d chlorinated flame retardants, CFCs (freons), and chlorinate d
solvents. The product m ust be pre pa red for recyclin g an d the ma nufacturer is ob lig ed to have
an enviro nmental pl an, which m ust be ad he red to in each country whe re the company conducts
its operation s policy. The energy req uire ments includ e a de mand that the monitor afte r a certain
period of inactivity sh all re du ce its power consumption to a lower le vel, in on e or more stages.
The le ngth of time to reactivate the monito r shall be reason ab le for the u ser.
Labelled products must me et strict environ mental dem ands, for e xampl e in re spect of the
reduction of electric and magnetic fields, along with physical and visual ergonomics and good
usab ility.

casing ca n consist of flame retard an t sub stances. The se are related to another g roup of
envir onm enta l toxins, PCBs, which are suspected to g ive rise to similar harm, includ ing
reproductive damage in fish eating birds and mammals, due to the bioaccumulative processes.
Flame retard an ts ha ve been fou nd in hum an blood and rese archers fear tha t disturbance s in

Congratulations!
You have just purchased a TCO'99 approved an d la bel led prod uct! Your choice has pr ovided
you with a p rod uct developed for p rofessional use. Your purcha se has also contri buted to
reducing the burden on th e en vironmen t and also to the furthe r de velopmen t of environme ntally

deve lop ed a s a joint effort by the TCO(The Swedish Confede ra tion of Pr ofessional Employees),
Svenska Naturskyddsforeningen(The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation), Statens
Energimyndighet(The Swedish National Energy Administration) and SEMKO AB.
The re qu irements cover a wid e ra ng e of issuse: envir on ment, ergonomics, usab ility, reduction
of electric and mag ne tic fields, energy consumptio n an d ele ctrical safety.
Why do we have environmentally labelled computers?
In many countries, environmental labelling has become an established method for encouraging
the ad aptation of goods and services to th e en vironmen t. The ma in pr ob lem, as far as
computers and othe r ele ctronics eq uip ment are concern ed, is that environmen tally harmful
substan ces are used both in the products and dur ing their ma nufacture. Sin ce it is not so far
possible to satisfactoril y recycle the ma jori ty of electronics equipmen t, most of these potentially
dama gin g substances soo ne r or la ter ente r nature.
Ther e are also oth er characteristics of a comp uter, such as energy consumption levels, that a re
impo rtant from the vie wpoints of both the work (internal) and natural (extern al) e nvironme nts.
Since all method s of electricity generation h ave a negative effect on the en vironme nt (e.g.
acidi c and climate-influencin g emissions, radioactive waste), it is vital to save energy.
Electronics equipmen t in office s is often left ru nning continu ously a nd thereby consu mes a lot of
energy.
What does labelling involve?
The environmental demands has been developed by Svenska Naturskyddsforeningen (The
Swedish Society for Nature Conservation). These demands impose restrictions on the
presence and use of heavy metals, brominated and chlorinated flame retardants, CFCs(freons)
and ch lor ina ted solvents, among othe r things. The pro duct must be prepared for re cycling and
the manufactur er is obliged to have an enviro nmental po licy which must be adhered to in each
coun try where th e comp any imp lements its operation al po licy.
The en er gy requiremen ts include a deman d that the computer and /or disp lay, after a certa in
period of inactivity, shall reduce its po wer con sump tion to a low er leve l in on e or more stages.
The le ngth of time to reactivate the compu ter shal l be re asonable for the user.
Below you wil l find a brief summary of the environmental requiremen ts met by this product. The

Environmental requirements
Flame retardants
Flame retard an ts ar e pre sent in printed circuit bo ard s, cables, wire s, casin gs and housings.
Their pur pose is to preven t, or at least to dela y the spread of fire. Up to 30% of the plastic in a
computer casin g can con sist of flame retardant substance s. Most flame retard an ts contain
bromine or chloride, and those flame retardants are che mically related to another g rou p of
envir onm enta l toxins, PCBs. Both the flame retard an ts containin g br omine or chloride and the
PCBs are suspected of giving rise to severe health effects, including reproductive damage in
fish-eating birds and mammals, due to the bio-accumulative* processes. Flame retardants have
been foun d in human blood and resea rchers fear tha t disturbances in foe tus development may
occur.
The relevant TCO '99 dema nd r equ ire s tha t plastic compo nents weighing more than 25 grams
must not contain flame retard an ts with or gan ically bou nd br omine or chlorine. Flame retardants
are allowed in the printed circuit boards since no substitutes are available.
Page 78
Cadmium**
Cadm ium is present in recha rge ab le ba tter ies and in the colour-generating layers of certain
computer displays. Cadmium damages the nervous system and is toxic in high doses. The
relevant TCO'99 requirement states that batteries, the colour-generating layers of display
screens and the electrical or e lectron ics compo ne nts must not contain any cad mium.
Mercury**
Mercury is sometimes found in batteries, relays and switches. It damages the nervous system
and is toxic in high dose s. The relevant TCO'9 9 req uir ement states that b atterie s ma y not
contain any mercury. It also dema nd s tha t me rcury is not present in any of the electrical or
electronics components associa ted with the labe lled uni t. There is how ever o ne e xce ption.
Mercury is, for the time being, permitted in the back light system of flat panel monitors as today
there is no comme rcially available altern ative. TCO aims on removing this exception when a
Mercury free alterna tive is availa ble .
CFC s (freons)
The re levant TCO '99 requiremen t states that neither CFCs no r HCFCs m ay be used du rin g the
manufacture and assembly of the product. CFCs (freons) are sometimes used for washing
printed circu it boards. CFCs break down ozone and thereby dam age the ozone layer in the
stratosphere, causing increased reception on earth of ultraviolet light with e.g. increased risks
of skin cancer (malignant melanoma) as a con sequence.
Le ad**
Lead can be found in picture tub es, display scr een s, solders and capacitors. L ead d amages the
nervous system and in higher doses, causes lead poisoning. The relevant TCO'99 requirement
permits the inclusion of le ad since no re pla ceme nt has yet bee n de veloped.
* Bio-accumulative is defined as substances which accumulate within living organisms.
** Lead, Cadmium and Me rcury are he avy metal s wh ich are Bio-accumu lative.
