3-PRONG GROUNDED TYPE PLUG
This appliance is equipped with a grounded type 3-wire cord (3prong plug). This plug will only fit into an electrical outlet made for a 3-prong plug. This is a safety feature. If the plug should fail to fit the outlet, contact an electrician to replace the obsolete outlet. Do not attempt to defeat the safety purpose of the Grounding Pin part of the 3-prong plug.
SHORT CORD INSTRUCTIONS
A short power supply cord is provided to reduce the risk resulting from becoming entangled in or tripping over a longer cord.
Longer detachable power-supply cords or extension cords are available and may be used if care is exercised in their use.
If a longer detachable power-supply or extension cord is used, (1) the marked electrical rating of the cord set or extension cord should be at least as great as the electrical rating of the appliance, and (2) the cord should be arranged so that it will not drape over the countertop or tabletop where it can be pulled on by children or tripped over accidentally.
The extension cord should be a grounding-type 3-wire cord.
ELECTRIC POWER
If the electric circuit is overloaded with other appliances, your appliance may not operate. It should be operated on a separate electrical circuit.
PLASTICIZER WARNING
CAUTION: To prevent Plasticizers from migrating from the finish of the counter top or table top or other furniture, place NON-PLASTIC coasters or place mats between the appliance and the finish of the counter top or table top.
Failure to do so may cause the finish to darken, permanent blemishes may occur or stains can appear.

INTRODUCTION
The OPTEC™ DISC heating element fitted in your Russell Hobbs Kettle is a revolutionary new concept in water heating technology, making it one of the fastest, most efficient Kettles available today.
The OPTEC™ DISC converts more of your electricity into usable heat and allows better heat transfer from element to water— which means less power wasted and faster boiling times.
The OPTEC™ DISC heating element is resistant to the permanent build-up of scale which can degrade the performance of a traditional element, causing overheating and shortening its life.

SOUND LEVELS
Because the OPTEC™ DISC heating element boils water more rapidly than the traditional type of heating element, you may find that this Kettle is louder than many other Kettles. This is normal, and should not be cause for alarm.
BEFORE USING FOR THE FIRST TIME
Remove all packaging from the Kettle and its Power Base. Remove any labels from the outer stainless steel surfaces.
1. Make sure the ON/OFF Switch on the Kettle is in the OFF (0) upper position. Fill the Kettle with water up to the MAX Water Guide.
2. Gently position the Kettle over the power connector and centered on the Power Base, taking care not to
spill any water.
3. Plug the power cord into the electrical outlet.
4. Press the ON/OFF Switch down ( I ) to turn the Kettle ON.
5. When the water has boiled, the Kettle will turn itself OFF automatically and the Switch will return to the OFF (0) position.
6. Discard the boiled water and allow the Kettle to cool. Rinse out with cold water. Repeat steps 1 through 6 at least three times, to remove any manufacturing dust, etc.
EASY-TO-USE POWER BASE WITH 360° ACCESS
With the specially designed Power Base and central Power Connector, you can set the Kettle on the Base at any angle, from any position.
Position the Power Base on a flat, heat-resistant surface, as close to an electrical outlet as possible. Shorten the power cord to suit by wrapping excess power cord in the Cord Storage area underneath the outer rim of the Power Base.
FILLING THE KETTLE WITH WATER
Remove the Kettle from its Power Base, remove Lid. Fill the Kettle through the Lid opening. Use at least 350ml (10 fl oz/2 cups) of water, and DO NOT FILL ABOVE THE BOTTOM OF THE MAX WATER
GUIDE INSIDE THE KETTLE. CAUTION: When refilling, take care when lifting the Lid, as the
WARNING: DO NOT OVERFILL THE KETTLE. IF THE KETTLE IS OVERFILLED,

POWER ON / AUTO OFF
1. Make sure the ON/OFF Switch on the Kettle is in the OFF (0) position. Fill the Kettle with water up to the MAX Water Guide.
2. Gently position the Kettle over the power connector and centered on the Power Base, taking care not to
spill any water.
3. Plug the power cord into the electrical outlet.
4. Press the ON/OFF Switch down to (I) to turn the Kettle ON.
5. When the water has boiled, the Kettle will turn itself OFF automatically and the Switch will raise to the OFF (0) position.
6. To turn the Kettle OFF before the water boils, manually move the ON/OFF Switch up to the OFF (0) position, or simply lift the Kettle from its base. Your Kettle will turn OFF and the Switch will return to the OFF (0) position automatically.
NOTE: When you lift the Kettle from its Power Base, you may
see moisture on the surface of the Power Base. This is the steam used to turn the Kettle OFF automatically after boiling, which then condenses and is allowed to escape via vents in the underside of the Kettle. This is perfectly normal, and should not be a cause for alarm.
WARNING: To avoid the risk of splashing water, pour slowly and do

350ml (12 fl oz/2 cups) of water. Misuse of this kind will shorten the life of the element.
BOIL-DRY AUTO OFF
If the Kettle is accidentally turned on when it does not contain sufficient water, a boil-dry device will automatically turn it OFF.
Unplug the Power Base from the electrical outlet. Remove the Kettle from the Power Base. Wait until the Kettle has cooled down before filling, as the element will be hot and spitting may occur.

SCALE
Scale is mainly calcium carbonate (chalk), a harmless, naturally occurring mineral found in most water supplies. ‘Hard’ water contains more of this mineral than ‘soft’ water. When water is heated, the minerals in the water solidify. This can make the water appear cloudy; it may form a thin film on the surface of the water after boiling; it may look like whitish pieces of plastic in the water; it may form a film on the walls or element of the Kettle. On traditional Kettle elements, scale forms a hard white ‘crust’ which adversely affects performance and reduces the life of the element.
• The OPTEC™ DISC heating element fitted to your Kettle has been designed and developed to resist this build-up of permanent scale deposits on its surface.
• As soon as you notice a “film” forming on the water, or, when cleaning the Water Filter, if you notice a “film” on the walls or the element, simply rinse the Kettle and wipe it out.
To reduce the build-up of scale residues, always empty any
residual water after boiling.
Any marking or residue on the element will not affect its performance or efficiency. If you do decide that you want to descale the Kettle, to remove any such residue, or to restore the appearance of the Kettle, you may do so, but please use a proprietary brand of descaler, suitable for use in plastic-bodied products (even metal Kettles have plastic parts).
When using descaler, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. After descaling, empty the Kettle and rinse it out several times with fresh water, then fill it with fresh water, boil and discard the water. This should ensure that no chemical residues are left in the Kettle.

1. Before fitting or removing the Water Filter, empty the Kettle, turn the Kettle OFF (0), and allow it to cool down completely.
2. Remove the Kettle from its Power Base.
3. Remove the Lid from the Kettle.
4. Press gently down on the tab at the top of the Water Filter to release it from the Kettle rim then pull gently away from the spout.
