Head restraint

WARNING
• Adjust the head restrai nt so that your head is optimally sup port ed a nd the center of the head re strain t is a t ear height, thus reduc ing the likelih ood of neck injury in a cra sh.
• Raise the head restraints in the seat that are occupied.
IB406
The front seats in t he Saab 9-5 are equip ped with Saab Active Head Restrai nts (SAHRs). These reduce the risk of whiplash injury if the car is h it fr om behin d.
In the event of a rear-end crash, t he body is forced back against the backr est. This, in turn, causes the m echan ism t o pres s t he head restraint forward a nd up ward, thus limiting the backward movement of the head.
The SAHR is a mech anica l syst em, a ctuated by body weight. The mech anism is built into the top of the b ackrest, where it is connected to the head res traint.
Therefore, the SAHR doe s not need t o be replaced after a minor rear-end crash.
15Safety
IB400
The head restraint can be rais ed or lowered and is adjustable i n vari ous p ositions .
• Raising: gra sp the head restr aint on both sides and pull it str aight up.
• Lowering: press the catch on the left-hand side of the attaching poin t and press down the head restraint.
16 Safety
Rear-seat head restraints
9-5 Sedan: The rear head restrai nts have
three adjustment positions for passenger comfort.
They can also be folded down to increase the driver’s rearward vision when the seat is unoccupied.
9-5 SportWagon: The heig ht of t he rear head restraints can be adjusted by depressing the catch on th e left -hand c ollar in the same way as the fron t head restrai nts.
See page 15 for adjustment procedure.

Safety belts

WARNING
• Buckle up and adjust yo ur saf ety be lt before driving off s o that you c an pay full attention to the tra ffic.
• Safety belts must be worn at all times by all car occupants.
• Child safety, see p age21.
• Check that the lockin g to ngue is pro-
IB460
perly locked in the belt lo ck.
• In the event of a cras h, the rear-sea t passengers not wea ring a seatbelt will be thrown forward against the front-seat backrests. The stre sses imposed on the front s eat passengers and belts are multiplied and can result in needless injury or even death for all car occupants.
Three-point inertia-re el safety b elts are p rovided for all seats.
The results of studies show tha t it is equally important to wear safety belts in the rea r seat as in the front seats .
Bear in mind that in certain states/provinces it is a legal requirement for all occupants of the car to wear a safety belt.
FASTEN BELTS
IB409
Safety belt reminder
When the ignition is swi tched on, th e ”FASTEN BELTS” reminder will light up un til the driver fastens the safet y belt. In addition an audible signa l sou nds for 6seconds, or until the driver fa stens hi s bel t.
Safety belt pretensioners
The belts of the fr ont se ats are fit ted with automatic pretens ioners and force lim iters. These are activated in th e event of a severe frontal or rear-end c rash a nd a s ide-on collision, provided that th e safe ty be lts are being worn.
The pretensioners serve to redu ce th e forward movement of t he bod y by tensio ning the belt. The force lim iters reduce belt loa ds on the body by "looseni ng" the safety belt to absorb the body’s kinetic energ y as gradually as possib le.
17Safety
The safety belt pretensione rs are not activated by vehicle ro llove r.
WARNING
If the car is involv ed in a crash, the safety belts, belt preten sione rs and other c omponents must be inspected by an a uthorized Saab dealer and replaced as neces sary.
Never make any a lterati ons or repairs to the safety belt you rself. Visit a n authorized Saab dealer fo r any necessa ry repairs.
Correct position for safety belt
WARNING
Proper positioning of the safet y belt is extremely important.
• An out of position safety belt can result in the occupant sliding underneath the belt in a crash (sub ma rining ) and injury can result fro m the lap po rtion cutting into the a bdome n.
Never fasten the safety belt wit h the shoulder belt behind the body or pull the belt off the sh oulder and under th e arm.
• If two people share a be lt, the y risk injury by being crushed to gether in the event of a crash.
• Positio n the l ap stra p sn ugly and l ow across the hips so t hat it just to uches th e thighs. The shoulde r strap m ust be as f ar in on the shoulder as po ssible.
• Check to ensure that the belt is not twisted or rubbing against a ny sharp edges .
• There should not be any slack in the belt. Pull the belt tight – particularly important when thick out er clo thing i s wo rn. It is advisable to remov e t hic k it ems of clothing.
• Refrain from tilting the ba ckrest more than necessary, as the safety be lt pro vid es better protection when the s eat is in a more upright position.
• Only one person per saf ety belt !
• For most of t he time a safe ty belt is w orn, the retractor will all ow the wearer freedom of moveme nt. The retractor locks up au tomatically if the belt is jerk ed or withdr awn sharply, the car tilts, the br ak es ar e app lied hard or a crash occurs.
• Children up to 6 y ears of age must a lways be seated in a ch ild se at. Saa b re commends the use of a child s eat fo r children up to the age of 10.
IB410
Correctly positioned safety belt
• Children who ha v e gro wn out of a chi ld seat should be r estra ined b y the c ar’s standard three-point belts. Make sure that the shoulder belt is not in conta ct with the neck or throat. I f it is, a boost er seat/cushion m a y be nece ssary.

Airbag

WARNING
To reduce risk of injury :
Always wear your safety belt.
Always adjust your seat so th at you
are as far back as possible but still able to operate the peda ls and reach the steering wheel and c ontrols comfortably.
• Children 12 and under or shorter tha n
55 inches (140 cm) should always travel in the rear seat as the car is fitte d with a passenger airb ag.
Never fit a child seat in front of the pas-
senger airbag.
The AIRBAG system comp rises an airbag in the steering wheel , a front passenger airbag and side airbags in the front seats.
The system supple ments the pr otecti on provided by the safety belts to furth er enhance the safe ty of t he occ upant s.
If a fault is detected in th e AIRBAG, the AIR BAG warning light on the main instrument panel will c ome on (s ee pa ges55 and 33).
Inflated airbag (driver side)
Inflation and deflation together take less than
0.1 second.
When the system is triggered by impact of a frontal crash, the airbags in the steering wheel and passenger si de of the dash board are inflated, after which th ey deflate through vents in the back of the bags .
The driver and passe nger airbags are ref erred ta as ‘smart’ airba gs. Th is m eans t hat the system com pensates for factors such as the force of the collis ion.
Note:
The sensor reacts diffe rently depend ing on whether or not the front seat belts on th e driver’s and passenger sides are use d. Situations can therefore arise where on ly one of the airbags inflat es.
It is also possibl e for on ly th e seat belt pr etensioners to be act ivated and f or the a irbags to remain unin flat ed.
The entire process take s les s than
0.1 second – literally, faster than t he bli nking of an eye.
IB419
These airbags are trig gered onl y by mo derate to severe front al or n ear-front al cra shes. They will no t be ac tivate d by minor front-end impacts, rear-en d or side impacts, or by the car rolling over.
