Safety belts

WARNING
Safety belts must be worn at all times by all car occupants.
Child safety, see pa ge 18. Check that the l ocking tongue is properly
locked in the b elt lock (see p age 1 7). The A-pillar area (area beside the wind-
shield) and the head linin g o f your Saab contain paddin g designed to reduce head injuries. No modific ations to th ese are as should be made unles s don e so b y you r authorized Saab de aler.
Three-point inertia-reel sa fety belts are provided for all seats.
Research has esta blish ed tha t it is da ngerous for rear-seat pass engers not to wear their safety belts.
Otherwise, in the eve nt of a n acc ident, the rear-seat passengers can be thrown forward against the fro nt-seat back rests, imposing much highe r st resses o n th e front-seat passeng ers an d belt s and result ing in needless i njury to everyone in the car.
FASTEN BELTS
Bear in mind that in certain states it is a le gal requirement for all occ upants o f the c ar to wear a seat belt.

Safety-belt reminder

When the ignition is switched on, the ”fasten belts” reminder will light up u ntil the driver or front-seat passenger are wearing their belts. In addition an audible sig nal sounds for 6 seconds, or until t he driver faste ns his belt.

Safety-belt pretensio ners

The belts of the fr ont se ats are fit ted with automatic pretensio ners, whic h are a ctivated in the event of a severe frontal collision or very violent re ar-end collisio n. They serve to reduce the f orward m oveme nt of the body by tension ing th e belt.
The belt pretensio ners d o not a ctiva te in less severe fronta l collisions, nor to side c ollisions, or rollovers.
IB409
If the car is involved in a collision, the safety belts, bel t pretensioners and other components must b e i nspecte d by a n authorized Saab d ealer a nd repl aced as necessary.
Never make any a lterati ons or repairs to the safety belt yourse lf but visi t an authorized Saab dealer.

• Only one person per saf ety belt !
WARNING
If two people share a bel t, they risk in jury by being crushe d together in the event of an accident.
• For most of the time a saf ety be lt is worn, the retractor will al low the wearer freedom of movement . The retractor locks up automatically if the be lt is jerk ed or withdr awn sharply, the car tilts, the brakes are applied hard or a colli sion occurs .
• Children who ha v e gro wn out of a chi ld seat should be r estra ined b y the c ar’s standard three-point belts. Make sure that the shoulder belt is not in conta ct with the neck or throat. If it is , a booster seat/cu shion may be neces sary.

Airbag (Supplemental Restraint System "SRS")

WARNING
To reduce risk of injury :
Always wear your safety belt.
Always adjust your seat s o that you are as far back as possible but still able to reach the steering wheel and controls comfortabl y.
• Children 12 and under or shorte r than 140 cm (55 inches) should always travel in the rear as the ve hicle is equipped with an a irbag o n the passenger side.
The supplementary res traint system (SRS ) comprises an airbag in the steering wheel, a front passenger airbag and side airbag s in the front seats.
The system supple ments the pr otecti on provided by the safety belts to furth er enhance the safe ty of o ccupants .
If a fault is detected in th e SRS, the AIR BAG warning light on the main instrument panel will come on (see pages 48 and
26).
When the system is triggered by impact of a frontal collision, the airbag s in the steering wheel and passenger si de of the dash board are inflated, after which th ey deflate through vents in the back of the bags .
The entire process takes less than
0.1 second – literally , fas ter than the bl inking of an eye.
These airbags are t riggered o nly by mod erate to severe frontal or near-fro ntal coll isions. They will not be activated by minor front-end impacts, rear- end or side impacts, or by the car rollin g over .
WARNING
• Even if the car is equipp ed with an SRS (airbag), safety bel ts mu st st ill always be worn by all occupants.
• Note that because a n airba g infl ates and deflates extremel y rapidly, it wi ll not provide protect ion ag ainst a second impact occurring in the same incident. Always use your safety belt.
• Always sit with th e whole of yo ur back in contact with the backre st of the seat, and with your seat a s far b ack as is practical. This is to reduc e the r isk o f injury from contact with th e backrest of the seat when the ai rbag in flat es an d also because the airbag needs spac e in which to inflate.
• Never attach anyth ing to the s teering wheel or passenger side of the instru ment panel, as this c ould re sult i n injury if the airbag should inflate. The same applies to anyt hing y ou mi ght have in your mout h, such as a pipe, for instance.
• Some components of the airba g wil l be hot for a short time. In some circumstances the airbag can c ause burns or abrasions to the body w hen the airbag inflates/deflates.
• Never rest your hand s or forearms on the steering-wheel center pad ding.
• If the AIR BAG warning light re mains on after the car ha s been starte d or comes on while you are driving, hav e the car checked im medi ately by an authorized Saab dealer. The warning light could signify that the airbags may not inflate in a cr ash, or they could even inflate without a crash.

Front passenger seat

WARNING
Never secure a rear-facing child seat in
the right front seat of a car equipped with a passenger a irbag. Inflation of the airbag in the event of an accide nt could seriously injure or kill a child .
The airbags are interconnec ted and have a common warning ligh t. The p assenge r airbag module is ho used in the fascia abov e the glove compartment and is marked ”SRS AIRBAG”.
Both airbags will be i nflated in the event of a moderate to severe fro ntal, o r near-f ronta l collision, even if the passenger seat is unoccupied.
WARNING
• Children 12 and under can be kille d by the airbag
• The back seat is the safest place for children
• Never allow a child to s tand in front of the seat or to sit on th e lap of a front-seat passenger. Serious injury or death could result if the airbag is inflated in a coll ision .
• Never place anythi ng on the dash or in front of the seat a s, in addition to being a hazard to passengers, this could interfere with the function of the airbag in the event of an a ccident. The s ame applies to the mountin g of accessories on the dash.
• Keep feet on the floor - neve r put feet up on the fascia, on the seat or out of the window.
• Do not carry anything in your lap.

AIR BAG warning light

WARNING
• If the air bag readi ness light st ays on after you start your vehicle, it means the air bag system may not be working properly.
• The air bags in your vehicle may not inflate in a cras h, or th ey co uld ev en inflate without a crash.
• To help avoid i njury to yo urself or oth ers, have your v ehicl e servic ed righ t away if the air bag readiness light stays on after you s tar t your vehicle .

The SRS must be inspec ted as part of the normal service pr ogram but ot herwise may be regarded as maintenanc e-free.

Scrapping or working on airbags and belt pretensioners

WARNING
• Under no circumstances ma y any modifications be made that affec t the steering wheel or the airbag ’s el ectrical circuitry.
• Before starting any w eldi ng work on the car, always dis conne ct the negative (–) battery lead and cover the co nductor.
• Airbags and belt pre ten sione rs mus t be deployed under controlle d conditions before the car is scrapped or any of the system’s components are removed. Airbags or bel t prete nsion ers that have been deplo yed as a result of an accident must be replaced by new ones.
• Airbag-system compo nents must never be transferred for use in another vehicle.
• All work involving the sc rappi ng or replacement of ai rbags or bel t prete nsioners must onl y be carri ed out by knowledgeable pers onnel.
Frequently asked questions on function of airbags
Do you still need to wear a bags are fitted?
Yes, always! The airbag merely supplements the car’s normal s afety s yste m. Moreover, the airbag will only be actuated in a moderate to severe frontal, or near-fronta l collision, which means, of course, that it provides no protecti on in mino r frontal coll isions, major rear-end or side-o n collisions or if the car rolls over.
The safety belts help reduce the chance of the car occupants from being thrown around and injured insi de the car.
But they also ensure that, i f a colli sion occurs in which the airba gs are inflated, the airbag will make the opt imum co nta ct with the occupant, i.e. s quare o n from the fro nt. If the occupant meets th e airbag in an offset position, the prote ction afforde d wi ll be reduced.
In addition, airbag s prov ide n o prote ction against a seconda ry impact occurring in the same incident. So th ere is no do ubt abo ut the benefit of wearin g saf ety be lts at all times.
Do not sit too close to the airbag: it needs room to inflate.
The airbag inflates very quickly and powerfully in order to protect an adult perso n in a serious frontal collision.

27Safety
How do I position the seat to leave room for the airbag to infla te?
Don’t have your seat too far forward. Recline the seat back to increase the dis -
tance between you and the airbag. For short drivers, special a ccessory pedal extensions are available through your Saab de aler.
Airbags inflate extrem ely r api dly and w ith great force - to be fast enough to prot ect an adult in the seat.
When do the front a irbags inflat e?
The airbag will only be in flated under certain predetermined condit ions i n a mode rate to severe frontal, or n ear-fron tal co llisi on, depending on such fa ctors as the forc e and angle of the im pact, the speed of t he car o n impact, and the resistan ce to deformation of the impacting ob ject.
The airbag can only be activated once in the same incident.
Do not attempt to drive the c ar after an airbag has been i nflate d, eve n if it is po ssible.
What won’t trigger t he fron t airbag s?
The airbag will not b e a ctivated in all front-end collisions. For ins tance , if the car has hit something re latively soft and yielding (e.g. a snow drift or a hed ge) or a soli d object at a low impact speed, the airbag will not necessarily be t rigg ered.
How loud is the in flatio n?
The noise of the inflation is certainly loud, but it is very short -lived and will no t damage your hearing. For a s hort ti me aft erwards you could experience a buzzing noise in your ears.
Most people who ha ve experi enced it cannot remember the no ise o f th e inflati on at all - all they rem ember is the noi se of the crash.
Can you still use a child seat in the front if a passenger airbag is insta lled?
Definitely not!
Children 12 and und er can be in jured o r killed by the airbag .
The BACK SEAT is the SAFEST place for children.
NEVER put a child seat in th e front.
Are the smoke and fumes giv en off when the airbag operates at all ha rmful?
Most people who h ave re maine d in a car with little or no venti lation for seve ral mi nutes complained only of minor irritation of the throat and eyes. Avoid as far as possible getting dust on you r skin as there is a r isk of skin irritation.
If this trouble persists, you should consult a doctor.
If you suffer from asthma, the inci dent may bring on an attack , in which case you shou ld follow the normal p rocedu re adv ised by your doctor. It is advisable to consult a doctor afterwards.
28 Safety
What should I do if th e AIR -BAG warni ng light comes on?
If the warning light is on, it means that a fault has been detecte d in th e syste m. The airbag cannot be relied on to operate as intended and it m ight e ven be acti vated erroneously. You sho uld theref ore take t he car to an authorized Saab dealer as soon as possible.
WARNING
When an airbag is inflate d there is dust in the air.
Because the dust so metim es cont ain s particles of a subs tance resem bling dish detergent, the foll owin g prec aution s should be taken:
• As soon as poss ible, was h any exposed skin usi ng a m ild s oap an d water.
• If there is irritation of the eyes, flush them liberally with c lean w ater for at least 20 minutes.

Side airbags

Side airbags are hou sed i nside the ba ckrests of the front seats an d are desi gned to protect the driver and fro nt passenger in the event of a side impa ct.
In a side impact, only the airbag on that side will be activated, and onl y then if certain predetermined conditi ons a re met such as th e force and angle of the impa ct, the spee d of the car on impact, and at which point on the car’s side the impact occurs.
The sensors, which are fit ted in the fron t doors, sense the rise in pressure caused by the door panel bein g pres sed in durin g an impact condition. The si de airbag trigger will be commanded based on the chara cteristics of this pressure rise.
