RULES FOR SAFE OPERATION

The purpose of safety rules is to attract your attention to possible dangers. The safety symbols and the explanations with them, require your careful attention and understanding. The safety warnings do not by themselves eliminate any danger. The instruction or warnings they give are not substitutes for proper accident prevention measures.

SAFETY ALERT SYMBOL.

Indicates caution or warning. May be used in conjunction with other symbols or pictures.

WARNING: Failure to obey a safety warning can result in serious injury to yourself or to others. Always follow the safety precautions to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock and personal injury.

DOUBLE INSULATION

Double insulation is a concept in safety in electric power tools, which eliminates the need for earth grounding. Whenever there is electric current in the tool there are two complete sets of insulation to protect the user. All exposed metal parts are isolated from the internal metal motor components with protecting insulation.

WARNING: The double insulated system is intended to protect the user from shock resulting from a break in the tools internal wiring. Observe all normal safety precautions related to avoiding electrical shock.

IMPORTANT: Servicing of a tool with double insulation requires extreme care and knowledge of the system and should be performed only by a qualified service technician. For service we suggest you return the tool to your nearest Ryobi Authorised Service Centre for repair. When servicing, use only identical Ryobi replacement parts.

WARNING: Do not attempt to operate this tool until you have read thoroughly and understood completely, safety rules, etc. contained in this manual. Failure to comply can result in accidents involving fire, electric shock or serious personal injury. Save owners manual and review frequently for continuing safe operation and instructing others who may use this tool.

The operation of any tool can result in foreign objects being thrown into your eyes, which can result in

severe eye damage. Before beginning power tool operation, always wear safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields and a full face shield when needed. We recommend Wide Vision Safety Mask for use over eyeglasses or standard safety glasses with side shields.

1. KNOW YOUR POWER TOOL. Read owners manual carefully. Learn its applications and limitations as well as the specific potential hazards related to this tool.

2. GUARD AGAINST ELECTRICAL SHOCK BY PREVENTING BODY CONTACT WITH GROUNDED SURFACES. For example, pipes,

radiators, ranges, refrigerator enclosures.

3. KEEP WORK AREA CLEAN. Cluttered areas and benches invite accidents.

4. AVOID DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENT. Don't use power tools in damp or wet locations or expose to rain. Keep work area well lit.

5. KEEP CHILDREN AND VISITORS AWAY. Visitors should wear safety glasses and be kept a safe distance from work area. Do not let visitors contact tool or extension cord.

6. STORE IDLE TOOLS. When not in use, tools should be stored in a dry and high or locked-up place, out of reach of children.

7. DON'T FORCE TOOL. It will do the job better and safer at the rate at which it was designed.

8. USE RIGHT TOOL. Don't force small tool or attachment to do the job of a heavy duty tool. Don't use tool for purpose not intended.

9. DRESS PROPERLY. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. They can be caught in moving parts. Rubber gloves and non-skid footwear are recommended when working outdoors. Also wear protective hair covering to contain long hair.

10. ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES. Everyday

eyeglasses have only impact resistant lenses, they are not safety glasses.

11. PROTECT YOUR LUNGS. Wear a dust mask if

operation is dusty.

12. PROTECT YOUR HEARING. Wear hearing pro-

tection during extended periods of operation.

13. DON'T OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and

balance at all times. Do not use tool on a ladder or unstable support. Secure tools when working at elevated levels.

14. MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keep tools

sharp and clean for better and safer performance. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories.

15. DISCONNECT TOOLS. When not in use,

before servicing, or when changing attachments, blades, bits, cutters, etc. all tools should be disconnected.

16. REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS AND WRENCHES.

Form a habit of checking to see that keys and adjusting wrenches are removed from tool before turning it on.

17. NEVER USE IN AN EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERE. Normal sparking of the motor

could ignite fumes.

18. KEEP HANDLES DRY, CLEAN AND FREE FROM OIL AND GREASE. Always use a clean

cloth when cleaning. Never use brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum based products, or any strong solvents to clean your tool.

19. STAY ALERT AND EXERCISE CONTROL.

Watch what you are doing and use common sense. Do not operate tool when you are tired. Do not rush.

20. CHECK DAMAGED PARTS. Before further use of the tool, a guard or any other part that is damaged should be carefully checked to determine that it will operate properly and perform its intended function. Check for alignment of moving parts, binding of moving parts,

breakage of parts, mounting and any other conditions that may affect its operation. A guard or any other part that is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced by an authorised service centre.

21. DO NOT USE TOOL IF SWITCH DOES NOT TURN IT ON AND OFF. Have defective switch-

es replaced by authorised service centre.

22. DO NOT OPERATE THIS TOOL WHILE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DRUGS, ALCOHOL OR ANY MEDICATION.

23. SUPPLY CORD. If the supply cord is damaged,

it must be replaced by the manufacturer or its service agent or similarly qualified person in order to avoid a hazard.

INSTALLING ACCESSORIES

WARNING:

Your Hobby Tool should never be connected to the power source when you are assembling parts, making adjustments, assembling or replacing accessories, cleaning, or when not in use. Disconnecting the Hobby Tool will prevent accidental starting that could cause serious personal injury.

1. Unplug your Hobby Tool.

WARNING:

Failure to unplug your Hobby Tool could result in accidental starting, causing serious personal injury.

2. To loosen, press the lock button, and rotate the shaft by hand until the shaft lock engages the shaft, preventing further rotation. (Fig 1)

WARNING:

Do not engage the lock while the Hobby Tool is running.

3. With the shaft lock engaged, use the collet wrench to loosen the collet nut, if necessary.

4. Insert the shank of the cutter into the bottom of the collet, then pull it out 1.6mm to allow for expansion when the accessory gets hot.

5. With the lock button engaged, tighten the collet nut with the wrench until the accessory shank is gripped by the collet. Avoid excess tightening of the collet nut. (Fig 2)

WARNING:

Before connecting your Hobby Tool to the power sorce make sure switch is in "OFF" position. Failure to do so could result in accidental starting resulting in serious personal injury.

■ COLLET CHANGES

To install a new collet, remove the collet nut and remove the old collet. Insert the collet in the hole. Replace the collet nut on the shaft. Always use

the collet which matches the shank size of the accessory you plan to use. Never force a large

diameter shank into a collet. The accessory should fit smoothly into the collet, but you should be able to tighten the accessory firmly and securely with the wrench provided.

■ BALANCING ACCESSORIES

For precision work, it is important that all accessories be properly balanced. To balance an accessory, slightly loosen the collet nut, and give the accessory or collet a 6mm turn. You should be able to tell by the sound and feel if your accessory is running in balance. Continue adjusting in this fashion until the best balance is achieved. Replace accessories which become damaged or unbalanced. USE ONLY RECOMMENDED ACCESSORIES.

WARNING:

Do not use grinding wheels over 25mm in diameter. The Hobby Tool's high speed can cause larger wheels to fall apart causing serious injury.

■ USING THE HOBBY TOOL

WARNING:

Be careful not to let your hands cover the air vents. (Fig 4).

The first step in learning to use the Hobby Tool is to get the "feel" of it. Hold it in your hand and feel its weight and balance. Feel the taper of the housing.

This taper permits the Hobby Tool to be grasped much like a pen or pencil.

When you turn on the tool, hold it away from your face. Examine your tool accessories carefully. Damaged accessories can fly apart as they come up to speed and should not be used. The use of damaged accessories can result in serious personal injury.

When applicable, clamp or otherwise secure the work to prevent it from moving under your rotary tool.

WARNING:

Always make certain that the area where you are going to use the Hobby Tool is free of nails or any other obstructions.

Practice on scrap materials first to see how the Hobby Tool operates. Keep in mind that the work is done by the speed of the tool and by the accessory in the collet. You should not lean on or push the tool in to the work.

Lower the spinning accessory lightly to the work and allow it to touch the point at which you want cutting, sanding, etc to begin. Concentrate on guiding the tool over the work, using very little pressure from your hand allow the accessory to do the work.

It is best to make a series of passes with the tool rather than attempt to do all of the work in one pass. To make a cut, pass the tool back and forth over the work like you would a small paint brush. Cut a little material on each pass until you reach the desired depth. For most work, the deft, gentle touch is best. You will have the best control, be less likely to make errors, and get the most efficient work out of the accessory.

For best control in close work, grip the Hobby Tool like a pencil between your thumb and forefinger. (Fig 5)

A "handgrip" method of holding the tool is used for operations such as grinding a flat surface or using cut-off discs. (Fig 6)

WARNING:

When using the engraving cutter, cut-off discs and sanding discs, always have the work securely clamped. Never attempt to hold the work with one hand while using any of the accessories. The discs could grab if they become slightly angled in the groove, and kickback can result, which means loss of control. Your second hand should be used to steady and guide the hand holding the tool.

Set the speed dial to fit the job; to achieve the best results when working with differnt material, the speed of the Hobby Tool should be regulated.

To select the right speed for each job, use a practice piece of material. Vary speed to find the best speed for the accessory you are using and the job to be done.

Your Hobby Tool is a variable speed model. The speed dial has the numbers 1 through 6 to indicate the speed of the tool. Turn the dial to selct the desired operating speed from 5000 - 23000/min.

Refer to the table in this section to determine the proper speed, based on the material being worked and the type of cutter or other accessory being used. This table will enable you to select both the correct accessory and the optimum speed at a glance.

■ NEED OF SLOWER SPEEDS

Certain materials, such as some plastics for example, require a relatively slow speed because the friction of the high speed.

Slow speeds (15000r.p.m. or less) usually are the best for polishing operations employing the polishing accessories. They may also be the best for working on delicate projects, delicate wood carving and fragile model parts. You should always do polishing with wire brush accessories at slower speeds and never higher than 15000r.p.m.

Higher speeds are better for carving, cutting and shaping wood.

Hardwoods, metals and glass require high speed operation. Drilling shouls also be done at high speed.

The speed of the Hobby Tool is controlled by adjusting the variable speed dial (Fig 7). The reference speed range is as the chart below.

■ GENERAL

Avoid using solvents when cleaning plastic parts. Most plastics are susceptible to various types of commercial solvents and may be damaged by their use. Use clean cloths to remove dirt, dust, etc.

Do not use electric tools on fibrglass and other abrasive materials as the abrasive material tends to cause accelerated wear and possible premature failure of bearings, brushes, commutator and other parts. Consequently, this tool should not be used for work on fibreglass or other abrasive materials.

■ LUBRICATION

All of the bearings in this tool are lubricated with a sufficient amount of high grade lubricant for the life of the unit under normal operating conditions. Therefore, no further lubrication is required.

WARNING:

Do not at ant time let brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum based products, penetrating oils, etc come into contact with plastic parts. They contain chemicals that can damage, weaken or even destroy plastic.

■ OPTIONAL ACCESSORY

A flexible drive shaft is available as an optional accessory. It is ideal for hard to reach and confined areas. Part No. 6200892004.

■ ATTACHING THE OPTIONAL FLEXIBLE SHAFT

TO HOBBY TOOL

1. To attach the flexible shaft to the Hobby Tool remove the housing cap from the tool as shown in figure 8. Then press the shaft lock button and rotate the collet nut by hand until the shaft lock engages. Unscrew collet nut and remove the collet.

2. Insert driver cable into collet (Fig.9) and secure by tightening collet (fig.10). Slide driver cap over collet and screw on to motor housing.

4. Insert the collet which is suitable for the shank size you need and the collet nut to another end of the flexible shaft. To change bits use the wrench and bit.

5. Do not use the flexible shaft over 30000 rpm.

■ INSTALLING CUT-OFF WHEEL (A)

1. Loosen the screw in a anti-clockwise direction.

2. Put the cutting wheel on mandrel.

3. Tighten the screw in a clockwise direction with wrench.

■ INSTALLING SANDER ROLLER (B)

1. Loosen the nut of sanding band.

2. Put the sanding roller on.

3. Tighten the nut in a clockwise direction.

■ INSTALLING POLISH WHEEL (C)

Screw the mandrel into the polish wheel.
