General warn and safety instructions
Observance of the general introductory warning information is vital.
x Read the complete manual carefully prior to
commissioning of the stove.
x Do only use approved transport aids with
adequate lift capacity for transport of your stove.
x The combustion of fuel releases thermal energy
that may cause strong heating of the surface of the stove, the doors, the door and operation handles, the door glasses, the flue tubes and possibly the front panel of the stove. These parts may not be touched without applicable protection clothes or devices, such as thermal protection gloves or operation devices (operation handle).
x Instruct your children on such special risks and
keep them away from the stove during heating operation.
x Do not place not fire-resistant items on the stove
or near to it.
x Do not place wet clothes on the stove for drying.
x Clothes drier or similar must be positioned in a
safe distance to the stove – FIRE RISK!
x Do not process inflammable and explosive
materials in the same or in neighbouring rooms while your stove is operated.
x The owner is responsible for the cleanness of
the stove at all times.
x The manufacturer’s warranty is valid only if the
initial commissioning with system acceptance was performed by a service partner certified by Rüegg, and a copy of the “report of system acceptance” has been sent to Rüegg. The service partners are in possession of a certificated issued by Rüegg authorizing them for service and repairing works on your pellet stove.
The packaging
The packaging of your new pellet stove offers optimal protection against damages. However, damages to stove and accessories might be caused during transport.
Please check you pellet stove carefully for damages and completeness after delivery! Any defects must be notified immediately to your stove dealer! The packaging is largely environmentally friendly.
The box and the film (PE) may be disposed off via the communal waste collection points for recycling.
33..WWHHAATTAARREEPPEELLLLEETTSS?

Observe waste incineration legislation!
Storage of pellets
To ensure trouble-free pellet combustion pellets should be stored in a dry and clean place.
Technology
The state of the art of your new pellet stove is ensured by years of laboratory and practice based test series.
The practical benefits of your pellet stove are convincing:
Ease of use – operational safety
Electronic monitoring combined with a combustion temperature control monitors and controls the
interplay of flue fan, conveyor screw and temperature. This control system ensures an optimal combustion and operation condition. The operating effort is reduced to the necessary minimum – this helps to prevent faulty operation and ensures optimal operation at the same time.
Highest efficiency – Lowest emissions
A large heat exchanger surface combined with an optimal combustion air control allows excellent fuel efficiency.
Accurate dosing of pellets in an optimized high-quality grey cast burner pot allows a nearly perfect combustion with excellent emission specifications – this is guaranteed for every operating phase.
KEA green in favour of the environment
Wood pellets as a fuel are CO2neutral and consequently environmentally friendly and sustainable. In addition, all Rüegg stoves can be fitted with a Fine particulate collector (option). This makes them to the cleanest stoves in general with the “Zumik®on“ fine particulate collector allowing to reduce the already low fine particulate rate by around another 90%!
The KEA pellet stove is optimally suited to be refitted with such fine particulate collector by your special dealer. Simply ask for the green kit.
Rüegg is the leading manufacturer for fine particulate collectors for firewood and pellets furnaces. For further information check our homepage (www.zumikron.ch

E
General instructions
For leveling of the stove the machine mounts under the device can be adjusted in height and locked (counter nut SW13).
The function of the smoke venting system is based on negative pressure in the combustion chamber and a minor surpressure on the flue gas outlet. Therefore correct and airtight installation of the flue gas connection must be ensured.
The device must be connected to a chimney approved for solid fuels. The diameter of the chimney must be at least 120mm. In case of a chimney with a diameter exceeding 200mm and a certain height installation of a draft reduction may be required. This is why you should consult a chimney expert prior to installation of the stove. In cooperation with the stove fitter who may adjust the parameters of the control, the chimney expert can ensure the proper connection of the stove to the chimney.
IMPORTANT!
Only use heat resistant sealing materials and applicable sealing bands, heat resistant silicone and mineral wool.
We recommend charging an authorized expert with the assembly (and/or control and acceptance for self installation)!
Also ensure that the flue tube does not extend into the free cross section of the chimney.
CAUTION!
x Please observe the applicable regional building
regulations. Ask your chimney sweep for advice.
x Flue pipes should not be too long.
x Avoid too many changes of direction for the flue
gas flow to the chimney. (e.g. too many corners and bends)
In case of self installation the installation must be accepted by a partner certified by Rüegg in order for the warranty to be valid. The costs for the initial commissioning with customer introduction and setting of the parameters by the charged service partner are in most cases charged separately. Ask your service partner for a service subscription.
Electric connection
The stove is supplied with an approximately 2.5m long connection cable with a Euro plug. Connect the cable to a 220/230V, 50Hz power connection. For installations in Switzerland replace the Euro plug by the supplied plug. The average electric power consumption during operation is approximately 100W. During the automatic ignition process (duration approximately 10 minutes) approximately 350W. The connection cable must be laid in a way that any contact with hot or sharp-edged external surfaces of the stove is avoided.
Combustion air
Every combustion procedure requires oxygen and/or air. For individual stoves this combustion air is generally taken from the living area. The air taken from the living area must be reintroduced. In modern houses with very tight fitting windows and doors the amount of air flowing back may not be enough. This situation may also become problematic due to additional ventilation in the house (e.g. in the kitchen or toilet).
External air supply
This external air supply means, that this air is supplied to the stoves adaption connector by means of a tube or duct, directly from outside or from another room (e.g. cellar or boiler room) This connector does not lead directly into the combustion chamber, but to the inside of the pellet stove. This has the advantage that the stove can take exactly the amount of air it needs, and that this air is already preheated by passing through the room. If the stove is not used, there should be a possibility to close this air supply as close to the facade as possible, to prevent cold damp air to flow into the duct and unnecessarily cool down the room or at temperatures well underneath 0° C to provoke condensation problems. Therefore it is important to insulate the ducts and make sure that eventual condensation fluid can run off freely in the right direction.
Page 8
8
Connecting the Rüegg room sensor
Disconnect stove from the power supply before connecting the multi-pin plug. Subsequently carefully tighten multi-pin plug on board using screws.
The white plastic casing is designed for wall mounting. For this purpose holes for screws are provided in the inside of the casing.
After mounting to the wall lock casing cover (min. approximately. 2m distance to the stove).
Chimney
Only a correct calculation of the chimney according to e.g. DIN 4705 guarantees a correct dimensioned chimney. Especially in rather air tight houses (low energy houses), the installation of a draft reducer afterward s is almost impossible, because there may be no direct contact between the outside air and the room air. The chimney connection has to be executed according to the national prescriptions that are in force at that time.
Floor protection
Floor space: Due to its weight the firing installation must be set up on a suitable, fire-resistant surface. For minimum distances from the outer edges of the stove to the base plate edges refer to the drawing.
Note: The indicated safety distances may differ from the applicable legal regulations. Observe the applicable local regulations for your country.
The glass or steel plate ensures protection of the floor from the heat of the stove and from embers that might fall down when the combustion chamber door is opened.
Especially for flammable floors (wood, carpet, etc.) a floor protection is required!
Safety distances
For flammable objects:
(Measured from the outside of the stove):
-20 cm from the back and the sides
-80 cm from the front
For non flammable objects:
(Measured from the outside of the stove):
- 10 cm from the back and the sides
- 40 cm from the front
Note: If the flue tube is lead vertically behind the stove before entering the chimney, the safety distance from the outside of the tube to the wall or to objects must be respected.

Overheating
A safety temperature limiter (STB) will stop the stove automatically when overheated. After cooling down of the pellet stove manual reset of the STB is required. Remove the STB protection cap (see image) and press the button beneath it. Reattach protection cap and start stove via operation panel. The STB switching status can be viewed under INFO/IN/STb. (see page18)
CAUTION! In case of an overheating state maintenance and cleaning works must be carried out!
Low Temperature cut off
If the stove cools down to a minimum temperature during operation, it will stop. This cut off can also occur in case of delayed ignition, e.g. if no more pellets are fed.
Electric overcurrent protection
The overcurrent protection of the stove is ensured by a slow 1.6A main fuse (on the back of device, see picture).
(See “specifications“ page 31)
In the event of an overcurrent event the fuse must be replaced. The fuse can be accessed by removing the plastic screw.
(see image on page 25)
Door contact switch
When the combustion chamber door is opened during operation the feeding of pellets will be stopped and the flue fan will run with maximum speed. When the door is open a traversing error message "DOOR OPEN” will be shown on the display. Pellet feeding and ignition will not restart until door is closed.
External locking
If the cable bridge at the thermostat connector is missing or is removed during operation the device will stop after a few minutes. After re-establishing the contact the device will restart.
(see „EXT“ page 16/17)
Fan stop delay for all error messages
The fan stop delay occurs for all error situations and at least until the flame sensor identifies a temperature exceeding 100°C.
System stop in case of flame sensor failure
In the event of a failure of the flame sensor in the combustion chamber the pellet feeding will be stopped and the fan will run for another 10 minutes.
Power failure during operation
After a power failure the flame temperature will be checked. If the temperature exceeds 300°C the device will not attempt to restart but continue the normal operation.
Below 300°C: Normal start process with ignition cartridge. The stove must be started manually via the operation panel.
Power failure during ignition process
The ignition process will be carried out by use of the ignition cartridge after reestablishment of the power supply.
Electric ignition
The pellet stove is equipped with an electric ignition system. The electric ignition is operated when the stove start-up program is initiated. Ignition duty cycle: approximately 10 min.
IMPORTANT! If the electric ignition is faulty please request a service or repair visit.
Firing- up without electric ignition: In case of the electric ignition being faulty proceed as follows:
1.Check if the pellet container is filled and the
combustion chamber is clean and free from impurities.
2.Place approved firelighters in the fire pan and cover
with a small handful of pellets.
CAUTION! Do not use flammable liquids (e.g. burning spirit) for firing-up the stove!
3.Light the firelighter in the fire pan using a match and
close the stove door carefully. Press the I/O button to start the stove.

The pellet consumption depends on the heating output. The pellet stove can be used permanently without any concerns and free from risk; however, we recommend that you reduce the heating output overnight and when the room is left for a longer period.
In case of any inquiries regarding the pellets please contact your certified dealer.
(Further information on the pellets: page 4)

Fuel feed
IMPORTANT! Avoid contact of pellet bag with the hot stove during fuel feeding!
Remove any pellets that have not been put in the storage container immediately!
To prevent the fire from going out due to lack of fuel, we recommend that an adequate filling level is maintained in the storage container. A 15kg bag of pellets can be fed to your pellet stove when the filling
of the pellet container is less than 2kg. Check the filling level regularly. The container lid should, however, always be kept closed unless the container is being filled.
Prior to refilling pellets use a vacuum cleaner to clear the pellet container from wood dust.
Use the supplied glove when filling the storage container.

Basic information
Pellet stoves are a very convenient kind of wood burning appliances, but as with every wood burning stove, needs a regular cleaning. The deposits prevent the free air flow and have a very negative influence on the combustion process. We would like to draw your attention to the fact that the quality of the solid fuel (pellets) plays a major role in the amount of deposits and it has a direct effect on the number of necessary service- and cleaning intervals. A high degree of humidity and dust, which result in a high degree of ash deposits, can lead to the necessity to clean you stove more than twice as often as indicated in this manual. We strongly recommend using only tested pellets al fuel for your Kea!
Important remark!
Cleaning and the small service are fully a task and the responsibility of the owner.
Switch off stove and allow cooling down before carrying out maintenance works.
Standard cleaning procedure
Cleaning the fire pan
The fire pan should be inspected to ensure that the air inlet openings are not blocked by ash or clinkers. After removal of the cooled down pan the area underneath can be cleaned by use of a vacuum cleaner. For continuous operation it is recommended to clean the pan every 2-3 days. Pellets of low quality, especially such pellets with more than 5% bark content, can cause incrustations in the fire pan. The automatic cleaning of the oven by raising the speed of the flue fan once per hour is not enough to remove such incrustations. The use of additional cleaning tools may be required.
The supplied flat cleaning tool serves for cleaning of the fire pan. The angled side of the tool can be used to scrape off incrustations.
The pointed opposite part can be used to clear possibly blocked fire pan ventilation holes from the
bottom. Free ventilation holes are essential for a good combustion!
Light ash can be removed from the side and bottom of the fire pan and the containers by use of an ash vacuum cleaner.
Caution: Embers may be hidden in the ash – use metal containers only!
The door key and the cleaning tool can be kept at the rear of the door at the intended suspension.
Additionally to the standard cleaning, we advise every 3 weeks or after +/- 150kg of pellets to clean de gap between the stove chamber in the front, and the smoke turning plate at the top, this can be done by a simple tool like the cleaning device for the fire pan, or

the door opener. This is necessary to prevent an early deviation of the smoke gasses.
Cleaning the door glass
It is best to clean the combustion chamber door with a wet cloth. Stubborn dirt can be removed with a special cleaner which is supplied with the operating kit. You can purchase fresh cleaner supplies from your special dealer.
Small service procedure
1-2 x per heating season, or after +/- 700 kg of pellets this service procedure is necessary. Here you have to clean the smoke exhaust ducts at the sides, the exhaust collector and the exhaust system at the back. When closing the removed parts again, please take care that the air tightness is guaranteed.
CAUTION! Disconnect stove from mains supply before carrying out any maintenance works.
The cleaning frequency for your stove as well as the maintenance intervals depend on the used fuel. High moisture content, ash, dust and chips can reduce substantially the necessary maintenance intervals. We would like to point out again that you should only use tested and recommended wooden pellets as a fuel.
Cleaning the exhaust ducts
Remove the top convection grate by unscrewing the two cross-head screws.
Remove the wing nut and lift the cast radiation lid carefully.
Clean the heating flues on the combustion chamber side using a soot brush. (Rüegg - Item no.52.57.00510)
Now remove impurities from the uncovered inner area and the side opening using a vacuum cleaner.
Refit the removed parts in reverse order.
Cleaning the flue gas manifold
The heating flue collector is located in the bottom of the combustion chamber. Especially important is the cleaning right into the outer corners!
Page 24
24
Procedure:
x Remove the bottom convection grate. (lift and
pull towards you)
x Remove cover plate of inspection hole by
unscrewing the two hexagon screws (SW10).
x Clear manifold channel form combustion
residues with vacuum cleaner. (see image)
x Refit parts in the reverse order. Ensure tight
fitting!
CAUTION!
Please ensure during cleaning of the flue gas fan casing that the fan blades are not bent! This could cause noise and a poor fan performance!
Cleaning of pellet container
CAUTION!
Ensure that the device is unplugged from the mains supply before cleaning the pellet container. Failure to do so could cause risk of injury by moving the conveyor screw!
Before refilling the container remove residues (dust, chips etc.) from the empty container using a vacuum cleaner.
Checking the chimney connection
Inspect and clean the connection. The collected flue dust can have a negative effect on the stove performance and represent a safety risk.
Part of the ash remaining in the flue fan can be removed using a vacuum cleaner after removing the stove pipe without demounting the flue fan. (see image)
Inspecting the door seals
The condition of the seals on the doors and glass at should be checked least once per year.
After completion of visual inspection hold a sheet of paper between door and stove while stove is cold. Close the door and pull on the paper. It should be stuck. If you can pull it out easily the seals must be replaced. In some cases it can be enough to adjust the door lock to ensure the required locking pressure.
Service procedure
(Servicepartner) Every 1-2 heating seasons, at least after 3000kg of pellets, the condition of all the sealing on the door an around the glass should be checked and if necessary they should be replaced. During this service, the chimney connection has to be controlled and cleaned. During the function test after this service procedure, every aspect and detail of the stove has to be controlled and noted in a service logbook. (page 29)
Cleaning and service intervals
Standard cleaning:
Every 1-2 heating days or after 30 kg Pellets
- clean the fire pan
- remove the ashes from the combustion chamber by vacuum cleaner
- Clean gap at the top (front) of the comb. chamber
- clean the glass if necessary
Small service:
1-2 times per heating season or after 700kg pellets (info appears in the display)
- clean all the exhaust ducts
- clean the exhaust collector
- clean pellet reservoir if necessary
- check chimney connection
- check door sealing
Service
Every 1-2 heating seasons, at least after 3.000 kg of pellets
- control and eventually repair small service works
-control and eventually replacement of the door seal and the seal of the cleaning lid.
- control of the door position and eventual regulation
- control of the electronic components
- Control of the chimney connection.

We recommend that installation of any auxiliary equipment is made by a Rüegg service partner and to ask them for advice.
CAUTION! Always disconnect stove from the mains supply and allow device to cool down completely before carrying out any manipulations. Prevent objects (screws, etc.) from falling in the fuel container - they could block the conveyor screw and cause damage to the stove.
Fine particulate collector
The KEA is prepared for retrofitting of the Zumik®on fine particulate collector. Read the information on page 6 (KEA green) and ask your special dealer for advice.
External thermostat
Your KEA pellet stove is supplied with a room sensor, which in combination with the control serves as a thermostat.
The required temperature can be selected by use of the plus and minus buttons on the display. (See pages 13 for operation in ROOM mode) If you prefer using a thermostat from a third-party manufacturer (e.g. with an adjusting wheel directly on the thermostat casing) you may connect it to the stove connector board (to green strap plug) and use it for operation of the stove in the HEAT mode. (operation in HEAT mode, refer to pages 13)
Procedure:
1. Turn off stove and disconnect from mains supply.
2. Use a small screw driver to loosen the two
clamping screws on the green plug (see image) and remove the cable bridge. You may also extend the plug from the board.
3. Attach both cable ends of the thermostat to any of
the clamps of the green plugs and secure cable with a plastic cable tie for strain relief
Now the external thermostat can be used for limitation of the required room temperature. When using the external thermostat the stove can only be operated in the manual mode (HEAT) of the default menu.
When removing the external thermostat the cable bridge must be re-connected to the green plug to ensure functioning of the stove.
If a cable bridge is not available the stove may be operated by setting the external release to “EXT OFF“ in the SETUP menu (see page 19).
Remote activation of stove via mobile phone
On the back of the KEA pellet stove you will find a 15pin plug (see image), which can be used for connection of the Rüegg room sensor as well as of a modem, by use of the double adaptor.
The Rüegg modem kit for the KEA stove (available from your Rüegg specialist dealer) apart from the modem, contains a power pack, a stub antenna, applicable securing screws and the KEA-specific double adaptor. The delivered modem is compact and designed for screw mounting by use of the applicable securing holes. (see photo)
Equipped with a SIM card and a corresponding code the stove can be remote controlled by short text messaging to the modem from any mobile phone in 3 different heating levels. This can be a very convenient feature if you are far away from your home and wish to find a pleasant temperature when coming home.
