Thank you for buying this ROWENTA espresso coffee-maker. Please read these instructions carefully and keep them handy.
Installation
Remove all packing, labels and various accessories both inside and around the appliance. Place the appliance on a stable, flat, clean and cool surface. Place the appliance and its power supply cord well behind the work surface, out of reach of children.
Do not use the appliance on or near to slippery or hot surfaces and do not let the cord hang down over a work top, above a source of heat (hot plates or gas rings).
Check that the water tank contains enough water. Top up if necessary without going over the maximum level. Take care to put the tank back in place against the appliance and close the lid.
Measure out the ground coffee using the spoon provided :1 heaped spoonful for one cup,2 flat spoonfuls for two cups. . Remove the ground coffee remaining on the edge of the filter-holder. Engage the filter holder fully until you hear a click.
Making espresso coffee
Rinse the coffee-maker before using it.
Pour about 1/2 litre of water into the tank. Place a container/cup with high enough capacity under the filter-holder. Run the applian­ce as when making an expresso, but without ground coffee in the filter-holder, for about 1 to 2 minutes. Also run the appliance on steam function for about 1 to 2 minutes (see following para­graphs).

Plug in the appliance. Place the cup(s) under the filter-holder
Check that your electrical power supply is compatible with the power and voltage shown on the appliance. Only connect the appliance to a socket with built-in earth. If the power supply cable is damaged,you must have it replaced by the manufacturer, his product support service or a person with similar qualification to avoid danger.
Pre-heat the cups to obtain very hot espresso coffee. Use small cups that hold no more than 50 ml.
If the lights are off and the coffee-maker does not operate, check the position of the tank. During operation, the appliance will be pressurised: never leave it unattended Never leave the appliance plugged in when not in use.
Your appliance is equipped with an automatic system designed to tamp down the ground coffee and thus make coffee in the best conditions
Set the control selector to position . The lights will come ON. When the light goes off, position the control selector to . The appliance's automa­tic piston will tamp down the ground coffee in the filter-holder.The coffee will flow after about 15 seconds.
To stop coffee flowing and to release the filter-holder, set the control selector to 0. After about 10 seconds, the piston will move up again and you can take out the fil­ter-holder. Eject the cake of coffee grounds by pressing the ejection control on the top of the handle. Rinse the filter-holder.

Using steam: making cappuccino coffees and hot drinks
Check that the water tank contains enough water.
Engage the filter holder fully until you hear
a click.
Set the control selector to position /.
The lights will come ON. The operating tem-
perature will be reached when light goes OFF. Plunge the steam nozzle in the liquid
you want to heat or froth. Do not allow the
liquid to come above the black ring.
Set the control selector to position The steam will be pushed through the liquid. The pump will run intermittently, this is normal. To obtain good, even froth on milk, make circular and up and down move­ments with the jug and use very fresh cold,
full-cream milk or fresh long-life skimmed
milk. Once you have finished, set the control selector to position "0". Immediately and carefully clean the steam nozzle with a wet sponge.
Caution: both the nozzle and the liquid will be extremely hot.Take
care to avoid injury through scalding.
Making a cappuccino coffee:
Always prepare coffee first. First heat up a large cup, and then fill to about a 1/3 of its capa­city with expresso coffee. Heat and froth cold milk in another container using the steam nozzle. Pour the milk and froth into the coffee and then sprinkle with cocoa powder.

Maintaining your espresso coffee-maker
Clean the outside of the appliance with a wet sponge. Regularly wash the tank, drip collec­tor, drip collector grid and filter-holder. Use a coin to disassemble the steam nozzle fitting. Rinse with clean water. If necessary, clean the hole with a needle.
Check that the appliance is cold and unplug from the mains before any cleaning operation. Do not use alcohol or solvent based cleaning products. Do not immerse the appliance in water.
Do not put any part of the appliance in the dishwasher.
MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING
To clean the filter-holder, take the lower part of the filter-holder bet­ween your thumb and index finger. Press using your thumb and open the compartment. Rinse the assembly in clean water activa­ting the ejection button if necessary. Push back the compartment.
Scale removal
Regularly remove scale from your expresso machine. De-scaling frequency will of course depend on the number of expressos you make but also on the hardness of the water you use. It is best to remove scale once a month, or more often if your water has a high lime content. No repair resulting from scaling will be covered under the guarantee.
To remove scale from your appliance: use pure spirit vinegar (never use wine vinegar) or a “special coffee-maker” food standard scale remover as available in the shops and diluted according to the instructions. Pour about 1/2 litre of pure spirit vinegar into the tank. Place a container/cup with high enough capacity under the filter-holder. Run the appliance as when making an expresso, without ground coffee in the filter-holder, for about 1 to 2 minutes. Also run the appliance in steam function for 1 to 2 minutes. Wait for about 10 minutes in the pre-heating position
then repeat the operation. To rinse your appliance:rinse then fill the tank with clean water. Then run your appliance as for scale removal. Repeat the operation 2 or 3 times for a perfect rinse.

The appliance has ov e r h e a t e d , thus triggering the safety devi­c e .
plug the appliance back in and replace the tank, then set the control selector to position 0 before attempting to remov e the filter- h o l d e r.
Clean the filter-holder
Rinse the tank while mov i n g the valve from underneath with your finger.
Clean or remove scale from the filter holder. Re m ove scale from the appliance.
Clean the slide with a wet s p o n g e .
Use less ground coff e e .
Repeat rinsing operation.
Re m ove scale and then clean the hole of the nozzle with a needle. A l ways use very fresh, cold milk. Full-cream milk or semi-skimmed milk gives the best results. Lo n g ­life skimmed milk can also be used.
Slide the tank into place, pus­hing firmly against the back of the appliance.
Re-connect the appliance.

the wires in this lead are coloured in accordance with the following codes: Green and Ye l l o w : eart h B r o w n : liv e B l u e : neutral
•Connect the green/yellow wire to the terminal in the plug marked “E” or by the earth symbol or coloured green or coloured green and yellow.
•Connect the brown wire to the terminal in the plug marked “L” or coloured red.
•Connect the blue wire to the terminal in the plug marked “N” or coloured black.
•A 13 amp fuse should be fitted when the appliance is connected to a BS 1363 A plug.
•Seek professional advice if unsure of the correct procedure for the above.
•Important : if the electrical cord of this appliance is damaged or shows signs of wear, it must only be replaced by an authorised Tefal Service Centre (see section After Sales Service).
About your factory fitted plug
(supplied with certain models only)
•The cord is already fitted with a plug incorporating an appropriate fuse. If the plug does not fit your socket outlet, see paragraph below. Should you need to replace the fuse in the plug supplied an appropriately rated approved BS 1362 fuse must be used (refer to wiring instructions specification for fuse rating). If the plug sup­plied does not fit your socket outlet, it should be removed from the mains lead and disposed of safety. The flexible cord insulation should be stripped back as appropriate and a suitable alternative plug fitted.
•If the plug has external access to the fuse (non-rewirable type plug) please note that the fuse cover is an important part of the plug.Please ensure that it is always refitted correctly. If you lose this cover please do not use the plug. You may contact Rowenta UK Limited for a replacement.
