WARRANTY & LIMITATION OF LIABILITY

1. ROTEM warrants that the product shall be free of defects in materials or
workmanship and will conform to the technical specification for a period of 1 (one)
year from the date of initial installation on sight (the "warranty period").

2. Load cells are not covered by ROTEM’s warranty.

3. ROTEM warrants that during said warranty period, any item/items or part/parts of
equipment found defective with respect to materials or workmanship or which do not
conform to the technical specification shall be repaired or replaced (at ROTEM's sole
discretion) , free of charge.

4. During the warranty period, in the event of an alleged defect, authorized reseller in
relevant region should be reported as soon as possible from the date of noticing the
said defect, but no longer than thirty (30) days from such a discovery. The report shall
include (1) a short description of the defects noticed (2) type of card / component and
its' matching serial number.

5. ROTEM's sole liability under this warranty is the repair or replacement of the

defective item of product.

Conditions and Limitations

1. ROTEM will not be responsible for any labor costs or expenses associated with
replacement of defective items or other part of the product or repair.

2. This warranty shall not cover: (i) product or part therein which has been modified
(without prior written approval of ROTEM), or (ii) product or part therein which has not
handled or installed by ROTEM's authorized reseller or (iii) product or part therein
which has either handled or installed not in strict accordance with ROTEM's
instructions, (iv) products which where used for function other then agriculture
industry.

3. This warranty will not apply in the following cases: (i) if all components of the product
are not originally supplied by ROTEM (ii) the defect is the result of act of nature,
lighting strikes, electrical power surge or interruption of electricity (iii) the defect is the
result of accident, misuse, abuse, alteration, neglect, improper or unauthorized
maintenance or repair.

ROTEM worn and alert all users that the Product is inherently complex and may not be
completely free of errors. ROTEM's products are designed and manufactured to provide
reliable operation. Strict tests and quality control procedures are applied to every product.
However, the possibility that something may fail beyond our control exists. Since these
products are designed to operate climate control and other systems in confined livestock
environments, where failure may cause severe damage, the user should provide adequate
back up and alarm systems. These are to operate critical systems even in case of a
ROTEM system failure. Neglecting to provide such a backup will be regarded as the user’s
willingness to accept the risk of loss, injury and financial damage.
In no event will ROTEM be liable to user or any third party for any direct, indirect,
special, consequential or incidental damages, including but not limited to any damage
or injury to business earnings, lost profits or goodwill, personal injury, costs of delay,
any failure of delivery, costs of lost or damaged data or documentation, lost or
damaged products or goods, lost sales, lost orders, lost income.
Except of the above express warranty, ROTEM makes no other warranties, express
or implied, relating to the products. ROTEM disclaims and excludes the implied
warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. No person is
authorized to make any other warranty or representation concerning the performance
of the products other than as provided by ROTEM.

1) User's Profile

This manual is meant to be used by either any grower or its' authorized personnel
who own any kind of either a farm or a greenhouse.

1.1 Description

ROTEM Communicator is a device for alarm purposes and central communication
systems.
The Communicator has a user friendly interface with an alfa-numeric keypad, 20
character X 4 line LCD and indicative LED.

1.2 Main Features

1. Supports several communication sources and can link to any / all ROTEM
controllers simultaneously.

2. Plugs in voice solution, supports incoming and outgoing phone calls in
case of alarms and status reports. Voice messages can be edited according
to personal preference.

3. Plugs in analog modem can speed up to 56Kbit with V.92, USB, Data and
Voice Functions.

4. Plugs in cellular modem (GSM/GPRS) providing two-way wireless
capabilities via GSM services

5. Mobile originated and mobile terminated SMS messages.

6. 8 Digital Inputs

7. 3 Dry Contact, Output Relays 5 Amp

3) User Interface

Available Keys

Every item is explained according to its' number seen in Fig. 1.

1. Main menu screen.

2. Alarm LED – is activated when one or more alarm conditions are detected.
The LED is turned off after doing 'Reset' and by that is acknowledged. When
the LED is off the controller will show Normal state, and all alarms are in
reset mode in all houses.

3. P.C. LEDs – when their lights turn on indicates an existence of PC
communication.

▪ 'Com 1 TD': indicating communication in PC TD.

▪ 'Com 1 RD': indicating communication in PC RD.

4. Modem LEDs – when their lights turn on, indicates an existence of Modem
communication.

• 'Com 2 TD': indication communication in PC TD.

• 'Com 2 RD': indicating communication in PC RD.

• 'Com 2 DTR': indicating the modem communication operates well.

• 'Com 2 DCD': indicating communication in DCD.

5. Output LEDs – when their lights turn on, indicates the relay's status.

6. Cellular LEDs – when their lights turn on indicates an existence of Cellular
communication.

• 'Com 3 TD': indicating communication existence in Cellular TD.

• 'Com 3 RD': indicating communication existence in Cellular RD.

• 'Com 3 DTR': indicating communication existence in Cellular DTR.

• 'Com 3 DCD': indicating communication existence in Cellular DCD.

7. Controller LEDs – when their lights turn on indicates a Controller
communication existence.

• 'Transmit Data': indicating communication existence in the controller
concerning transmitting data.

• 'Receive Data': indicating communication existence in the controller
concerning receiving data.

8. Serves as a Help key. Press the help key at any time to receive a short helpful
explanation concerning the screen you are currently viewing.
In order to exit ‘?’ screen at any time, press the 'MENU' key.

9. Arrow keys: These keys move around the menus, and help make selections. In
some cases you can also use them to change values.

10. This key displays the main menu from the standard screen, and is used as an
"escape" key to exit menus you are currently in.

11. This key changes values between positive and negative numbers, and makes
check-mark choices when checking or selecting options are needed.

12. 'ENTER' key serves as a selective confirmation key.

13. Use these keys to insert numbers or text. For example, the option of Address
book enables to select both numeric and alphanumeric values. Note that
number '1' LED can serve as a comma key when needed.

14. This key lets you insert decimal point if necessary.

15. This key erases typing mistakes. It also enables the ‘Cold Start’ function when
held at power on (see Table 1 for further explanation).

2. Hot Keys

The Communicator incorporates keys enable quick access information of
different varieties (see Table 1).

This procedure resets the
communicator to the original
factory settings. It should be
performed after replacing a
software version, either when
reinstalling or when
instructed by ROTEM's
technician.

Note that the squares (see Fig. 2) describe the houses do not have to be
sequential. The squares can be one of the following:

• Empty squares represent non-identified controllers.

• Filled squares represent identified controllers.

• The letter 'F' indicates there is an alarm. This sign also appears after

reset operation.

4) Communicator Setting

Cold Start procedure is committed with every software change. Restoring old setting
is always recommended.

I) Initial Setup

1. Hardware Profile

Go to Menu 9.1 (see Fig. 3) that defines the Hardware Profile and check whether the
Communicator recognizes the hardware. If the communicator did not recognize all of
the connected hardware, please refer to Appendix A.

2. Local Network Setup

After making sure the Communicator's hardware is ok adapt the Communicator to
Rotem controllers by either hard wired 485/RS232 or RF.

Go to menu 1.2 (see Fig. 3) and set the next parameters:

• Baud Rate: Set according to the controllers Baud rate. The recommended

rate is 9600.

• Primary Units: Insert the number of master controllers, for example -

Platinum Plus.

• Secondary Unit: Insert the number of slave controllers. Note that when

exiting this menu, the communicator will reset in order to save changes.

3. Regional Setting

Go to menu 2 (see Fig. 3) and fill in the correct clock time, date and region of the
communicator. The communicator will reset in order to build Network Objects.

These menus function as network definition tools and help you determine the right
communication configuration suitable for your needs (Fig. 7 results pressing 'Menu'
key).

a) Select option 1 from previous section and press 'ENTER'.
b) Insert the farm / site name using numeric text box keys (see Fig. 8).

1.2 Controller Port

Menu 1.2 (see Fig. 3) defines the basic applications and communication settings for
the Communicator (see Fig. 9). Wrong defenition can result alarms for missing
controllers or prevent communication from unidentefied controllers.

Baud Rate setting must match all controllers otherwise the communication will not
operate. The default setting is 9600bps (see Fig. 10). Make sure the same rate is set to
all controllers both primary and secondary units connected to the communicator.

1.3 Serial Port

The serial port (see Fig. 11) connects between the Communicator and the PC
software. The baud rate set must be identical to the one set on the PC communication
software in order to establish communication. The default is also 9600bps. Note that
this is also being used for USB.

This menu helps you test communication between Primery controllers and the
communicator. Each controller is named by number, allowing the Communicator to
identify and test the connection with it (see Fig. 12).

In order to test comminication, insert the controller’s number and press 'ENTER'
to start / stop the test procedure (see Fig. 13). 'Tx' means “Transmited data” and
'Rx' means “Received data”. In order to indicate good communication both
indicators must flash allternaitly.

1.4.2 RF

displayed.
Use the '+/-' key to change from 'NO' to 'YES' and press 'ENTER' to scan the network
for changes. The system will restart and rescan the network automatically. Make sure
all controllers are found in the menu list.

The main purpose of this option is to adjust the communicator to the local phone

• Retype for conformation and verify by selecting 'YES' (see Fig. 18). The

system locks down automatically after 5 minutes.

• In order to perform an instant lockdown press key number '9' (from the

main screen).

• In order to change or disable the security feature, type the password to

unlock the system.

• Go to the security menu and type a new password. Verification of the new

password is required.

• If you wish to disable the security feature leave the password '0000' and

press the 'ENTER' key twice.

An explanation regarding the fields mentioned in Fig. 22-23 is provided below;
a) Auto Answer: Number of rings before auto answering. For example, if number '4'

is set, the communicator will answer a call after 4 rings.
b) Line Test: Select 'YES' to monitor the phone line and activate an alarm in case of a
disconnection.
c) Dial Delay: When dialing a pager service, some services require additional tone
menu browsing. Use this feature to set a delay between the phone number and the
tone browsing. Each “,” will represent the number of seconds in delay between the
phone number and the next browsing number.
d) Input Gain: For factory use only. If your communicator is unable to connect your
voice dial in phone line, consult your local dealer regarding this feature.
e) Advanced (see Fig. 24):

This screen is meant to be used in order to increase transfer rate between the
communicator and a remote modem. The communicator can compress data and send
it faster. Their value can be changed by using the '+/-' key. The following features are
available:

 Modulation: Auto or V34 transmitting the point during connect negotiation at

which the modem has determined which modulation and rate will be used, i.e.
before any error. Note that V34 option can solve the problem of working with
old equipment computers.

 Compression: Enables or disables data compression performed by the

modem, can be called hardware compression. It reduces the amount of time
required to transfer data. Make sure the modem you are connected to can read
and decompress the received data.

 Data Flow: In order to control the flow of data between the modem and the

communicator.

4.1.2 Pager (send page)

This selection enables to set a sending page mode (see Fig. 25).

4.1.2.1 Pager Setup

ROTEM provides alarm codes using the pager system (see Appendix C) according to
the following; a code number is sent followed by its matching alarm. Note that in the
Description column in Appendix C every time the '#'' sign appears, it means an
attribute number.
This option can be one of the modes mentioned below. If , for example, two alarms
occour – the basic mode will send two different messages whereas the enhanced mode
will send both alarms in one message.

• Basic: sends a page in the following format: '_ _ _ # _ _ _ #'. The first 3

digits stand for house number and the last 3 digits stand for message
number. Maximum 8 characters are allowed. This option notifies in case of
more than 1 alarm.

• Enhanced: This option enables to send full messages including their

attributes as one. It sends a page with the following format: '_ _ _#_ _ _#_

_ _#_ _ _#', for example, 'House#Alarm#Attribute#Alarm#'. Moreover,
The enhance option will also send multiple alarms for the same house in
the same page. Maximum 256 characters are allowed. This option enables
all the alarms per house.

4.1.2.2 Test (send page)

Use this option to calibrate your pager connection. There is a delay between the
service provider answer and the time the message has been sent to the pager (see Fig.
26-27).

Test the connection and use Menu 4.1.1 (see Fig. 3), 'Dial Delay' option in order to
change the number of seconds before sending the massage.

4.1.3 Dial Out

Use this menu to verify the proper connection of the line to the communicator (see
Fig. 28).

• Dial your number and answer the phone. Test text over the phone is heard and
the screen will display the message 'OK'.

Set command updates the SMSC address, through which mobile originated SMS are
transmitted. The service center address must be present to complete delivery of SMS.
Most SIMs are delivered from the service provider with a service center already
programmed into the SIM. A “+” should be entered in front of the SMS address, but
is not required by all operator (see Fig. 31 for example).

Select this option in order to make sure the signal is strong enough (see Fig. 32).
Moreover, make sure both the cellular modem and the cellular provider are

• Insert a cellular phone number and press 'ENTER'.

• The Communicator will send a following test SMS message: "The

communicator is ready to send you alerts using SMS".

5. Address Book

The Address Book is divided into 'Contact Group' and 'Options' (see Fig. 34).

5.1 Contact Group

This group consists of a list of 8 addresses to deliver messages to. 'Contact 1' is the
highest priority address and the 8

is the lowest. The communicator sends a message

to 'Contact 1'. If a reset was sent from any Contact the dial sequence would stop.
Otherwise, it will keep rotating between the contacts until reset.

• Type the name (note that the Number keys turn to alphanumeric ones) and

phone number (note that the Number keys turn to numeric ones).

• Use the '+/-' key to change communication method from the 'USE' list. The

'USE' list contains the following selections:

1. Idle – Contact neutralized for temporary service rest without changing the
address.

2. Voice – Voice alert.

3. SMS – SMS alert.

4. Voice + SMS

– Alert for both Voice and SMS.

5. Pager

- Pager alert.

• In order to set the changes press 'ENTER' and select 'YES' for “save settings”.

This menu is available if there is an active alarm (see Fig. 44). Note that the Reset is
meant only to the communicator's alarm. Fig. 44 represents "low battery" mode.
Note the following; an alarm has occurred and reset has been chosen. The system
goes to a delay mode where the alarm won't be back till 12:00 AM of the next day,
unless 'enable' to the alarm has been set. There is a possibility to define variables as
house number and alarm number and not to reset the alarm till a requested time.
Warning: When an alarm occurred and reset had been chosen, the system goes to a
delay mode where the alarm won't be back till 12:00 AM on the next day

This section includes a history menu of all of the activated alarms (see Fig. 46). Note
that this history information relates to the communicator only. The history itself will
not appear on the net, for example, when suddenly there is no electricity. In this case

The communicator supports 8 dry contact digital input card that can be programmed
as a normally open / close dry contact input. These inputs can be connected to a wide
variety of sensors such as generator operation, magnetic door or window, thermostat
etc.

The '[N]' column indicates two possibilities;

o '0' – presents the open contact (Normally Open). The moment there is a

change from the usual state (closed state), an alarm occurs.

o '1' – presents closed contact (Normally Closed). The moment there is a change

from the usual state (opened state), an alarm occurs.

Fig. 49 serves as an example of a digital input program. The programmed line No.1 is
set as normally closed for the house door. The message for this program is “door
opened”. If the door opens, the dry contact is disconnected and changes from 1 to 0.

This change triggers the alarm and the message “door opened” is sent to all addresses
programmed in Alarm/Options/Addresses.

5) Sending Test Message Commands and Status Requests
from / to the Communicator

It is possible to send an SMS from a mobile phone to the Communicator device. It is
done by using the following SMS message formats:

• Siren Reset: If siren reset is requested, the following SMS message should be
sent:
'!RX' > 'Send' - were 'R' – stands for Reset,

'X' – stands for house number, can be any positive
number from 1 to 32.
'Send' – end the SMS message by clicking on 'Send' key.

If several house numbers have to be typed in the SMS, use the following
format:

'!RX#X#X' > 'Send' – '#' s ign separates between every
house number.
'Send' – end the SMS message by clicking on 'Send' key.

If all houses should be siren reset, use the following format:

'!RALL' > 'Send' – were 'ALL' – can be typed both in
Capital letters and small letters.
'Send' – end the SMS message by clicking on 'Send' key.

• Alarm Reset: If reset to all the alarms is desired, the following SMS message
should be sent:

'!C' > 'Send' – were 'C' – stands for the Communicator.
'Send' – end the SMS message by clicking on 'Send' key.

Note that this option does not consist of any parameters.

• Messages Acknowledgement: If SMS messages acknowledgement is
requested, the following SMS message should be sent (note that this selection
is optional):

- '!AON' > 'Send'– request to receive a respond message to every
sent SMS (after executing the SMS message request).
'A' – stands for Acknowledgement.
'Send' – end the SMS message by clicking on 'Send' key.

- '!AOFF' > 'Send' - request not to receive a respond message to
every sent SMS (after executing the SMS message request).
'A' – stands for Acknowledgement.
'Send' – end the SMS message by clicking on 'Send' key.

6) Network Setup

The purpose of this section is to support communication of up to 63 controllers,
whereas before it was possible to deal with maximum 32 controllers.
The parameter 'Primary' is set to be the number of controllers defined in the
communicator network. This parameter is divided to 2 branches;

o Lower branch – 1 to 32 controllers
o Upper branch – 33 to 63 controllers

Note that in order to be able to use the Upper branch, the Lower branch must be
defined entirely.
For example, if the controller number is 38, its lower controllers must be defined as 1
to 32.
Fig. 80 emphasis the controller numbers of both upper and lower branches.

7) Voice – Dialing to the communicator

It is possible to dial the communicator in order to receive information regarding the
alarms. In order to enable this option, the parameter 'Dial in' (see menu 4.1.1) needs to
be set to 'Yes' (see Fig. 82).
In order to receive the information in voice mode only, unlike data, follow the next
steps:

 Dial the controller. Wait 'X' rings ('X' presents the number of rings less than

the parameter 'Auto Answer' that has been set in menu 4.1.1) and hang up (see
Fig. 81).

 Wait 5 seconds.
 Dial once again and follow the instructions the controller offers.

Note that the user should not wait more than 1 minute between the two calls.

o If 'Auto Answer' parameter is zero (0) the Communicator answers in voice

mode.

o If 'Auto Answer' parameter is zero and in addition 'Voice Dial In' parameter is

'Yes', the controller answers always in voice mode.

8) Voice Dial Out to Contact List

• The Communicator dials to the contact list as defined.
If no contact list exists, the communicator does not dial.

• Once the controller alarm is triggered, a greeting voice message is
being read aloud: "Good <Morning/Afternoon/Evening> <poultry
farmer's name>, <farm name> farm. Please, press '1' to listen".

1. Press '1' to listen. If the user does not want to listen to the
message, the system repeats itself 3 times and only than will
automatically hang up.

2. After '1' is pressed the system proceeds to the following menu:

Press '*' to reset.
Press '1' to replay message.
Press '9' to go to the next message. If no further messages exist, the

system won't offer this option.

3. If '*' has been selected, the user must insert a password and in the
end to click '*'. If no password exists, the user must press '*' once
again.

4. After the password is inserted, the system repeats the alarms one
after the other and proceeds to the following menu:

Press '1' to disable the alarm.
Press '2' to enable the alarm.
Press '9' to go to the next alarm. Note that if no further messages exist, the

system won't offer this option.
Press '0' to exit this menu and go to the previous one.



At any time; if either an incorrect key is pressed or if nothing is
pressed, the system repeats itself 3 times and only than will
automatically hang up.

The cable between the external connection box and the controllers should be a 3 Wire
Shielded Cable (at leasr 22AWG).
This cable is daisy-chained to all controllers and to the communication line of the
external connection box in the following manner:

 The Black wire (COMMON) is connected to the COMMON in the

communication terminal of the controller.

 The Red wire, TX in the connection box is connected to RX in the Controller.
 The Green wire, RX in the connection box is connected to TX in the

Controller.

Connected hardware was not recognized in the hardware profile list
under system Menu (voice, cell modem, Line modem).

 Troubleshooting

The Communicator List –O.K- for device installed and –N/A- for not available
Perform hardware reset by turning OFF the battery switch and unplugging the
power source. Reconnect the power and switch the battery ON so that the unit will
rescan the hardware. If this does not help, open the Communicator and check that
the device is installed properly. If still not operating, replace the device.

power cycle (by turning the device off and than on) to the communicator.

13) Appendix B: RF

In order to configure RF communication you need to set the baud rate and channel on
both sides of the RF.

1. Configuration (DIP 1): In order to configure new parameters: move DIP switch

to 'on' state, arrange all parameters according to the following section, press reset,
wait until LED RX is off. Move Config to OFF.

2. Baud rate (DIP 2, 3): Baud rate is the communication bit rate beetween

PC/controller and the RFC/RFR – the UART default baud rate is 9600bps. All
states are summarized in Table 4.

If RFR is being used and the connection is to several controllers in different
distances, you should reduce baud rate until you establish connection with no
errors. The 19200 bps is not recommended for use.

3. Address (DIP 4, 5): for future use. Note that it must be at OFF position.

4. Channel (DIP 6, 7, 8): Set the module’s hopping channel number (see Fig. 76). A

channel is one of three layers of addressing available to the XStream radio
modem. In order to module to communicate with each other, the modules must
have the same channel number since each network uses a different hopping
sequence. Different channels can be used to prevent modules in one network from
listening to transmissions of another. Table 4 summarizes all possible Jumper

modes.
Note that it is very important to verify no communication disturbance occurs in
neighboring farms.

Dip Switch configuration procedure:

Rearrange DIP switches 2-8 according to following procedure:

a) Move DIP switch 1 (config) to 'on' position.
b) Make any necessary changes in the DIP switch position.
c) Press Reset.
d) RX LED should be lit for 4-12 seconds.

e) Return DIP switch 1 to off position.
The following will explain each DIP switch function:
For every switch, upright mode is ON and down mode is OFF.

RF range: RF performance (ranges) depends on the environmental conditions.

That is the reason for listing different ranges, although radio waves can pass through
objects, allowing non line-of-sight communication, obstacles will absorb a portion of
the signal greatly reducing the effective communication range (see Table 4).

other heavy construction will inhibit signals more than light obstacles such as a few
trees or a simple post. When trying to increase the range, several factors including
antenna height, frequency, antenna type and power output when all should be
considered.
Antenna height allows the signal to travel above obstacles and also reduce any
interference from the ground. Lower frequencies travel further than higher
frequencies, and directional antennas can focus energy, thereby increasing range in
fixed installations.

6. Long cable: In general, it is best to keep the RF cable as short as possible. All

cables have losses which are usually measured in dB loss per 100 ft. Some
common cables and dB losses are included in Table 5.
