3.1 Installation Quick Guide
There are a number of steps to installing the unit:
Step Action Section
Preparing the Installation Environment 3.2.1
Preparing the Wiring 3.2.2
Mounting the Control Panel 3.2.3
Installing Keypads (Optional) 3.2.4
Wiring the L-4 System 4
3.2 Installation Prerequisites
Unit installation is limited to the control panel and to the keypads. Installation
instructions for expansion modules are included in appendices in this manual.
For information on installing the various detectors, please refer to the
individual manuals supplied with the detector.
3.2.1 Preparing the Installation Environment
Establish the control panel location using the following guidelines:
Locate the control panel in a place where the temperature is within the
specified limits for operation.
When distributing wiring, avoid putting the system wires close to house
wiring to reduce capacitive coupling of noise.
Locate the control panel in the center of the premises to avoid long runs
to any one location.
Install the panel 130 cm +/- 10 cm from the floor. Make sure to leave 15
cm all around the control panel for ventilation and/or wiring entry. The
panel should be installed at eye level to ease in making
connections/repairs.
3.2.2 Preparing the Wiring
The control panel provides 12 VDC up to either 1 Ampere for the L-4 and L-4K
or 1.7 Ampere for the L-4PCBA for add-ons (expansion modules) and sensors.
16 AuraSys™ L-4 Family Installation Manual
Page 17
Installation and Wiring
To install the L-4P CB A panel:
The maximum wire length between the panel and accessories depends on the
amount of current drawn by the accessory and the gauge of the conductors
(wires) used.
The distance between the panel and the furthest keypad or add-on must not
exceed 200 meters due to the capacitance on the data line.
3.2.3 Mounting the Control Panel
The L-4 family of control panels requires mounting inside a secured enclosure,
such as a lockable metal or plastic box.

5.1.4 System Audio Feedback
When the (Installer) user enters data using the keypad, the system responds
with tones that signal acceptance or rejection of the data entry:
Acknowledge beep: when an entry is valid or an operation is successful,
the keypad sounds three short beeps (ACK)
Non-acknowledge beep: when the system reverts to its previous status
or when an entry is erroneous, the keypad sounds a single long beep
(NACK)
Key Beeps: according to the programmed setting, any key press
generates a short (150ms) beep
Approval Beeps: valid entry is indicated by a sequence of four short
beeps: 120/80-120/250-120/80-120ms (HI/LO-HI/LO)
Invalid or Wrong Entries: indicated by a single, long 1.5 second beep
This behavior is common to all definitions of valid and invalid entries in
this document, unless otherwise mentioned
Warning Beeps: In case of a general warning condition – as defined in
different cases in this document – the system emits warning beeps as
follows: 2 short beeps of 200/200ms, repeating every 1 second
Error Beep: In case of an error condition resulting from a wrong entry or
system rejection of a command or request, the keypad emits a
continuous, 1 second long beep, unless otherwise specified
Trouble Beeps: If enabled, the system keypads sound trouble beeps on a
trouble condition. Trouble beeps consist of a sequence of 3 short beeps of
150/150ms, repeating
Communication Loss: In the case of loss of communications between
the keypad and control panel, the keypad sounder sounds a unique
trouble beep sequence, similar to the trouble beeps but repeating every 5
seconds. Pressing any key silences the beeps but the trouble status
indicator remains on (yellow) until the communication is restored
Chime Beeps: the keypad sounder supports the following sequences for
up to 3 chime options as supported by the panel:
Chime#1: 5 Sequences of 2 x 200ms beeps, one silent second
ESC () key cancels and exits an
existing entry on programming mode.

5.2 Access Level Types
The AuraSys L-4 family provides for three levels of access. This section
describes the three levels and their corresponding codes, as well as the duress
code (available to all three user levels) for disarming a system under threat. The
access levels are: Master Programmer, Installer, and User.
5.2.1 Master Programmer
The master level has a unique code that can be changed but not erased. The
default code is 1000.
User and master level access are provided by entering the basic and master
codes respectively. The system does not allow installer access without master
user approval.
In addition to the user-level programmable functions, the master can:
Change the master code
Change the duress code
Change, add, or delete basic-level user codes
Change basic level arming/disarming options
Set system time and date
Program private phone numbers
Reset the panel to factory defaults
5.2.2 Installer Level
Within the AuraSys L-4 system, the master user, normally the owner, must
allow the Installer to access the system. He does this by providing the Installer
with the installer entry code that allows him to reprogram the system. (See
Section
The system enters installation mode once the Installer enters his code. If the
wrong installer code is entered, the system allows you to immediately re-enter
the code while an error indication shows. The installer code can be changed
under installer access only. The system allows only a single installer session
access at a time and from a single keypad. All other keypads are locked. The
installer level can access the system using the keypads, and remote/local
up/down communications. The installer level has authorization to:
Change the Master and Installer codes
Access all system configuration settings
Set system time and date
Reset the panel to factory defaults
5.5 for a complete description of installer programming procedures.)
AuraSys™ L-4 Family Installation Manual 41

To enter programming mode:
5.2.3 User
Each user code is assigned for arming/disarming the system. When a wireless
expansion is installed in the system, up to ten users can be assigned (by the
master programmer) to use RF keys, in addition to using the manual code
entry.
Each user can be programmed by the master programmer to exercise part or
all arming options, disarm the system, and/or set bypassing zones.
5.3 Entering Programming Mode (Installer/Master)
1. On the attached keypad, press 8 to access the Installer Programming
Menu, or 9 to access the Master Programming Menu.
The PROGRAM indicator starts flashing, indicating a programming
code request.
All other keypads from this stage on are blocked; the PROGRAM
indicator flashes on the blocked keypads, as well.
2. Enter the Master/Installer code (default code is 1000 for Master and 8888
for Installer).
The PROGRAM LED illuminates and the AWAY indicator blinks. The
system is now ready to accept the Section Code.
To program a feature, press # (ENTER) followed by the numeric
string as detailed in the various programming tables shown in
Sections 5.5.3 through 5.5.15.
Press (ESC) for 3 seconds to exit programming. The system
automatically exits programming mode after 5 minutes of inactivity as
well.
5.4 Enable Installer Code Access
Within the AuraSys L-4 system, the Master User, the owner, must allow the
Installer to access the system. He does this by providing the Installer with the
installer entry code that allows him to reprogram the system. The system
enters installation mode once the Installer enters his code.
5.5 Installer Programming Level
Once the system is installed, it can be programmed from one of the keypads.
This section describes the following procedures for the installer level user, as
well the system responses:
Entering Parameters
General Procedural Steps
Programming Tables
42 AuraSys™ L-4 Family Installation Manual
Page 43

To perform a typical programming sequence:
5.5.1 Entering Parameters
Once the system is ready to accept parameters from the Installer, he is able to
program the desired values from the keypad using a series of coded numbers.
There are two values for each parameter, the section code and the
programmed value. They can be understood as follows:
Parameter Description
Section Code
Valid Value(s)
This is the number that indicates which major program category is
to be accessed by the Installer. This is a 3-digit number for installer
programming; or a 2-digit number for the master programming.
The format to be entered, within certain boundaries or selected
from a number of options.
5.5.2 General Procedural Steps
This section describes the typical programming sequence.
1. Enter Programming Mode.
2. Press # (ENTER) followed by the Section Code.
If the Section Code is valid, the AWAY indicator illuminates and the
HOME indicator flashes. Otherwise the keypad sounds an error beep
and the indicators remain unchanged
This action identifies the category of value to be entered. After
entering the three-digit value, the AWAY indicator becomes lit
constantly and the HOME indicator starts blinking, signaling that the
unit is waiting for the Installer to enter a value
3. Enter a value number, either single or multiple value entry, followed by #
(ENTER).
Indicator PROGRAM remains on, HOME is off and AWAY is
blinking; the program is waiting for a valid section code to be
entered. Only numeric values can be keyed in the LED indicator-type
keypad.
5.5.3 Programming Tables
The programming tables described in this section list the codes, defaults and
valid values for all parameters. Each table is accompanied by an example of the
programming sequence for the parameter set out in that table. Note the
following about the example string of coded numbers:
The string of numbers represents values for all parameters in the string
that defines, for example, a zone. If you wish to enter a value for a
specific parameter, you enter valid values for all parameters that appear
in the table to the left of the parameter you wish to define
For example, see Section
5.5.4.1 for the table of basic zone definitions. To
define zone 1 as a Crossing Paired Zone, you must enter all parameters up
to and including the Crossing Paired Zone parameter. These parameters
AuraSys™ L-4 Family Installation Manual 43
Page 44
Programming via Keypad
include: Section Code, Zone#, Input Type, Partition, PGM#, and finally,
Crossing Paired Zone
Therefore, the correct installer input should be: 101 01 01 02. This defines
the Zone Input Type as “Single NO”.

5.5.3.2 Entry/Exit Delay Table
The Entry and Exit Delay codes define the delay time in seconds. These are the
delays that allow the user to reach the keypad upon entry, or to reach the door
upon exit without triggering an alarm.
All codes in the System Codes table are entered according to the current
Access Code Length (Section 017 of this manual). Installer and Master Codes
can be edited, but cannot be deleted (typing <#> resets them to their default
values).
Installer Code
Each Installer has a unique 4-digit access code. This is the section code for
installer code definition.
Program (PGM) Activation Triggers are the codes used to determine the
behavior of the connected devices (such as garage door openers, lights, and so
on).

Expansions and Accessories
A. Expansions and Accessories
A.1 MD-31 (RJ-31X Jack)
Even though the RJ31X jack has more connections, typically only four wires are
used; two for the connection to the outside phone line (T and R), and two for
the connection to the inside phone lines (T1 and R1).
The MD-31 has 8 screw terminals inside the housing. This makes it easy to
connect the outside and inside lines.
Just connect the lines as shown below. The outside and inside lines can come
into the jack from within the wall behind the jack, or into either, or both, sides
of the jack.

Plug the 50 cm cord into the MD-31 and test communication.
A.2 SA-59 GSM Communicator
The SA-59 is a universal GSM reporting unit and communicator. When it is
connected to an Alarm Panel, the SA-59 operates as a GSM back-up unit to
the PSTN line, enabling incoming and outgoing calls to be redirected to the
GSM network if the PSTN line fails. Since the SA-59 simulates a telephone line,
it makes no difference whether the device to which it is connected is a GSM or
a land line.
The built-in SA-59 GSM module connects via the PSTN line to check for phone
communication type availability. If there is no PSTN line, the SA-59
automatically switches the call from PSTN line to GSM.
When the SA-59 is connected to a telephone line (Line IN), the SA-59 tunnels
the device to a land line to make a call. If the land line is cut or not
functioning, all communications go via the GSM network without the need for
any special additional settings.

If the SA-59 is not connected to a land line, all communications take place via
the GSM network.
