This guide provides information required to install and use the Rosemount™ 4088 Firmware Upgrade
Utility.

2.0What update was made to the firmware?
As of January 5th, 2018, the Rosemount 4088 firmware was updated from firmware revision 5 to revision
6. Firmware revision 6 has updated the default damping on process temperature from five seconds to
two seconds, allowing for faster temperature measurement response times as well as reduced
calibration time required. Firmware revision 6 also enhanced the calibration process between Emerson
flow computers and the Rosemount 4088 transmitter, creating tighter integration and reduced
maintenance time.

5.0Hardware requirements
Serial to RS-485 Modem (computer must have serial port)
If computer does not have a serial port, a USB to serial modem converter must be used.
The tool may work with many different modems and converters, but all testing at Rosemount was
completed with the following modems:

6.0Connecting to the transmitter
Transmitter covers should not be removed in explosion-proof areas with power applied.
To ensure there are no connection interruptions, the Rosemount 4088 communications should be
isolated from any other transmitter or flow computer when the firmware flash is in process.
Connect a reliable power source to the PWR (+) and (-) terminals on the transmitter.
Connect the communication leads from the modem to the RS-485 (A) and (B) terminals of the
transmitter.

7.0Using the upgrade utility
1.Enter the Modbus® address for the transmitter.
2.Ensure the baud rate in the transmitter and utility tool match.
3.Select the proper serial port on your PC.
4.Select the Flash button.

Each transmitter will take about 10 minutes to upgrade at 9600 Baud.
Device configuration and calibration will be maintained throughout the update process, so there is
no need to recalibrate or reconfigure after the update completes.
7.1Error message
If an error message is received during the upgrade process, it will appear as follows.

If this happens, ensure the transmitter communication is isolated, the power supply is providing
sufficient power, all connections are good, and simply start the upgrade process over.
