Rosco’s premier range of color filters, Roscolux, is manufactured using a unique technology to insure the longest possible life under hot theatrical lights. Roscolux is the widest range of color filters used by lighting designers and theatres throughout the world.
Roscolux is comprised of two types of plastics, polycarbonate and polyester. Not all dyes and plastics are compatible; therefore Roscolux utilizes both plastics to achieve maximum performance. More than 70% of the Roscolux line is made from co-extruded polycarbonate plastic,
the remainder of the filters is deep-dyed polyester.

Polycarbonate:
Roscolux is produced using polycarbonate due to the superior heat qualities when compared to other plastics. Co-extruded polycarbonate is colored all the
way through the plastic. Raw polycarbonate is mixed with dye pellets in a high pressure, high temperature extruder. The heat and pressure of the extrusion
process thoroughly combines the clear plastic and the dye, resulting in a body colored plastic. To further insure the durability of the color, a very thin layer
of clear polycarbonate is extruded on both sides of the colored film, trapping the color between and providing a protective barrier. By sealing the colored
layer between the two thin layers of clear film, dye migration is minimized making the film extremely resistant to color fading, extending operating life and
protecting from minor scratches and abrasions.
Roscolux utilizes a select form of flame retardant polycarbonate to meet the most stringent U.S. and international standards for fire safety.
Polyester:
A portion of the Roscolux line is deep dyed polyester. Dyed polyester is equally superior to surface coated plastics. In our deep dying process, polyester film
is subjected to a heated bath of dye for controlled periods of time. The film absorbs the dye into its surface, in some cases penetrating all the the way
through to the middle of the plastic. This again results in a more heat stable and long lasting filter.
