Der Typ VII C ist aus den sogenannten „Einbäumen“ - kleinen Ost- bzw.
Nordseetauglichen U-Booten geringer Reichweite ab Anfang der 30er Jahre
schrittweise entwickelt worden. Die Zielstellung der deutschen Marineleitung
bestand darin, einen neuen Tauchboot-Typ zu schaffen, mit dem die zukünf­tigen Hauptkampfgebiete im östlichen Nord- und Mittelatlantik erreicht wer­den konnten, um den englischen Nachschub bekämpfen zu können. Zwischen
1935 bis 1937 wurden 10 Boote vom Typ VII A mit den charakteristischen
Satteltanks gebaut. Der Typ VII B erhielt dann leistungsstärkere Motore und
das Boot wurde um 2 m verlängert. Der Typ VII C erhielt ein aktives
Schallortungsgerät und wurde mit größerem Gefechtsstand und Turm von
1938 bis 1944 in ständig steigender Zahl auf insgesamt 16 deutschen Werften
gebaut. Von diesem Einhüllenboot liefen insgesamt 663 Einheiten vom Stapel.
Sie stellen den meist gebauten U-Boot-Typ des 2. Weltkrieges überhaupt dar.
Die Stahlplatten der Druckhülle waren 18,5 mm stark. Damit konnte bis auf
rund 100 m Tiefe sicher getaucht werden. Im Notfall überstanden viele Boote
jedoch maximale Tiefen bis 250 m. Die Boote konnten neben Torpedos auch
Torpedorohrminen zur Verminung von Hafeneinfahrten mitführen. Auf Deck
war vor dem Turm eine Seezielkanone Kal. 8,8 cm auf Mittelpivotlafette auf­gestellt, die Projek tile bis auf 12,35 km Entfernung verschoß. Einen der wir­kungsvollsten Einsätze dieser Waffe stellt der Beschuß des britischen Elektrizi ­tätswerkes Jaffa (nahe dem heutigen Tel Aviv) durch U-81 dar. Anfänglich
wurde sie jedoch meist eingesetzt, um Handelsschiffe mit einem Schuß vor
den Bug zum Stoppen zu zwingen. Im „Winter garten“ stand hinter dem Turm
eine 2-cm-Flak-Kanone. Neben 4 Offizieren und 5 Oberfeldwebeln bzw.
Feldwebeln waren noch 9 Unteroffiziere und 20 Mannschaften oftmals für
mehrere Wochen auf engstem Raum im Boot untergebracht. Die Boote des
Typ VII C waren im Nord- und Mittelatlantik, vor Afrika, in der Karibik, im
Mittelmeer, vor Grönland, vor der US-amerikanischen und kanadischen
Ostküste, sowie im Nordmeer bis in die arktischen Gewässer östlich von
Murmansk im Einsatz. Die Angriffstaktik auf Konvois änderte sich schon bald
nach Kriegseintritt Großbritanniens dahingehend, dass die Boote tagsüber
Fühlung hielten, den Standort und begleitende Kriegsschiffe meldeten, um
dann aufgetaucht im Schutz der Nacht mit Torpedos die Schiffe aus der Nähe
zu bekämpfen. So waren in der „glücklichen Zeit“ der deutschen U-Boote
1940-1941 beachtliche Erfolge bei der Versenkung feindlicher Kriegsschiffe
und Handels tonnage möglich geworden. Ab März 1941 änderte sich dieses
Bild plötzlich und sehr drastisch. Die gegnerischen Ortungsmethoden und die
Luftüberwachung waren so weit verbessert worden, dass Boote plötzlich
„verschwanden“. So verloren von rund 39.000 U-Boot männern über 33.000 ihr
Leben auf See. Aufstieg und Fall der deutschen U-Bootwaffe spiegelt sich in
diesem Typ eindrucksvoll wieder.

The Type VII C was gradually developed from the beginning of the 1930s
from the so-called “canoes” – small short-range submarines suitable for use in
the North Sea and the Baltic. The aim of the German Naval Command was to
obtain a new type of submersible with which the future main combat zones
in the eastern, north and mid Atlantic could be reached in order to take
action against the English supply lines. Between 1935 and 1937, ten vessels of
Type VII A were built with the characteristic saddle tank. The type VII B then
received more powerful engines and the vessel was lengthened by 2 m. The
Type VII C received an active sonar device and larger conning tower and
bridge and between 1938 and 1944 was built in steadily increasing numbers
at a total of 16 German shipyards. 664 of this single-hulled vessel were
launched. They represent the most numerous submarine type of the Second
World War. The steel plates of the pressure hull were 18.5 mm thick. This
enabled it to submerge down to a depth of about 100 m. However in an
emergency many withstood a maximum depth of 250 m. In addition to tor­pedoes they could also carry torpedo tube mines to enable them to mine the
approaches to harbours. On deck forward of the tower there was a 88 cm
surface-to-surface cannon on a centre pivot mount that could fire projectiles
to a distance of 12.35 km. One of the most effective uses of this weapon was
the shelling by U-81 of the British electric power station at Jaffa (near present
day Tel Aviv). At the beginning however it was mostly used to force merchant
vessels to stop by firing a shot across the bows. In the turret aft of the tower
stood a 2 cm anti-aircraft gun. In addition to 4 officers and 5 staff sergeants,
there were 9 non-commissioned officers and 20 ratings, who were often
accommodated aboard in closely confined space for weeks on end. Type VII
C vessels were used in the north and mid Atlantic, off Africa, in the Caribbean
and the Mediterranean, off Greenland, the east coasts of North America and
Canada and in the North Sea up into Arctic waters east of Murmansk. Their
tactics for attacking convoys altered soon after Great Britain entered the war
in that during the day the submarines tracked them and reported their posi­tion and accompanying warships and then, submerged under cover of night,
attacked the ships at close range with torpedoes. Thus during the “lucky peri­od” in 1940 and 1941 it was possible for the German U-boats to achieve con­siderable successes in sinking enemy warships and merchant tonnage. From
March 1941 however this scene changed suddenly and very drastically. The
enemy methods of locating and air reconnaissance were so much improved
that the vessels suddenly “disappeared”. Thus out of about 39,000 submarine
crewmen over 33,000 lost their lives at sea. The rise and fall of the German U­boat is impressively reflected in this model.
