surround loudspeaker.
INTRODUCTION
EMBRACE sets an entirely new standard for surround channel performance where stunning musical precision and industrial design are judiciously allied to complement other Revel loudspeakers. With its striking and sophisticated appearance, EMBRACE hints at its advanced design from the first glance. But its sculptured lines can only begin to tell the story of this exceptional surround channel system, with its custom-designed drivers, highly functional enclosure, and flexible, individually optimized networks.
ABOUT THE MANUAL AND WARRANTY
To begin enjoying your EMBRACE speakers, first read and then perform the instructions in this owner’s manual. Maximum performance is dependent on following all instructions described here, as well as those found in the owner’s manuals of associated components in your audio system. Save these instructions for future reference.
The Revel EMBRACE surround speaker is covered by a limited 5-year warranty, so save the bill of sale to protect your purchase and aid in any service-related questions.

DESCRIPTION
Each Revel EMBRACE surround speaker uses an 8-inch mica and carbon-filled co-polymer woofer to reproduce the lower octaves. Two 4-inch titanium transducers reproduce the very important midrange frequencies. Two 1-inch textile-dome tweeters reproduce higher frequencies.
EMBRACE also features a user-selectable control for dipolar or bipolar dispersion that optimizes the system for any recording format. When used in dipole mode, EMBRACE offers a new level of freedom from “localization,” resulting in more theater-like performance for film sound, and more natural results reproducing music.
MIDRANGE
One of the keys to EMBRACE performance is the use of two extraordinary 4-inch (102-mm) mid-frequency transducers. They feature neodymium motors and titanium domes with an incredible stiffness-to-weight ratio for resonance-free, wide bandwidth operation. Their 1.5-inch (38-mm) voice coils are very rare in 4-inch midrange design, and contribute greatly to EMBRACE’s freedom from coloration due to compression. The inverted titanium dome is truly pistonic throughout its bandwidth and is just one of the technical elements that set this transducer apart from those used in any other surround loudspeaker.
WOOFERS
EMBRACE’s 8-inch (210-mm) mica and carbon-filled co-polymer dome bass transducer utilizes a 2-inch (52-mm) voice coil with a very long winding length. This dissipates heat far more efficiently than a typical 1-inch voice coil, or even most 2-inch voice coils with

short winding lengths. A copper shorting ring is employed to decrease inductance and flux modulation. The result is a dramatic reduction in distortion. EMBRACE’s compression-free operation is further optimized by its unusually long mechanical excursion.
TWEETERS
The two EMBRACE tweeters have several important design elements that correspond to their midranges. The 1-inch (26-mm) textile dome tweeters are coated and have an advanced suspension, oversized 1-inch voice coils, and a low-distortion magnetic system. Among the results are increased accuracy and more natural musical dynamics. Moreover, the EMBRACE tweeter shows virtually no signs of frequency response change at high output levels (i.e., compression), while still maintaining harmonic distortion levels below the threshold of hearing.
CROSSOVER NETWORK
Built into each EMBRACE speaker is an individually-optimized crossover network with the following features:
• An extremely sophisticated variable crossover offers dipole,
bipole, remote, and Dual Drive™ capability.
• Hand-wired filter networks with air-core inductors and film
capacitors are calibrated to match each Ultima EMBRACE speaker to the reference standard.
• External level controls for the tweeter via calibrated switched
precision resistors, thus maintaining identical response from both speakers.
• Rear-wall proximity compensation switch for optimum perfor-
mance under varying listening conditions.
CABINET
EMBRACE’s inspiring Revel industrial design uniquely complements the most refined home interiors. While the cabinet design offers exquisite appearance, it also contributes to the system’s performance. The sophisticated main enclosure and its internal bracing were designed based on our exclusive knowledge developed from laser interferometry. The result is an acoustically-inert platform for the generation of sound waves.
Each cabinet includes an integral wall-mount system. An optional ceiling-mount version is also available from your Revel dealer.

Figure 3. In this 5.1-channel system, a pair of EMBRACE surrounds are shown placed to the sides of the listening area with optimum coverage for the front row. As an option, the EMBRACE surrounds can be placed farther back to cover additional rows of listeners.
PLACEMENT
The EMBRACE surround loudspeakers are extremely flexible. They may be used in a “5.1” channel system in dipole or bipole mode, or in a “7.1” channel system in dipole, bipole, or Dual Drive™ mode.
5.1-CHANNEL DIPOLE/BIPOLE PLACEMENT
The most common home theater and multi-channel music system configuration utilizes a pair of EMBRACE surrounds in dipole or bipole mode, to the sides of the listening area, as shown in Figure 3. If most listening will occur in the front row, place the EMBRACE surrounds to the sides of the front row.
NOTE: Each pair of EMBRACE surrounds has distinct left and right versions, as denoted by labels on the rear. To insure correct surround operation, be sure to mount the left speaker on the left wall (as you’re facing the screen) and the right speaker on the right wall.
If the listening area consists of several rows, place the surrounds to the sides of the back row (see Figure 3). This avoids placing the surrounds in front of any listener, at the expense of reduced optimization in the front row.
In a very large room, use two pairs of EMBRACE surrounds, as shown in Figure 4 (on the next page). Both pairs may be placed to the sides of the listeners, or one pair may be placed to the sides of the listeners and the second pair may be placed to the rear of the listeners, as shown in Figure 5 (on the next page).

7.1-CHANNEL DIPOLE/BIPOLE PLACEMENT
Some multi-channel controllers provide two pairs of independent outputs to drive two pairs of surround loudspeakers or for use in Dual Drive™ operation. Several configurations are possible:
• Two pairs of EMBRACE surround loudspeakers may be used in dipole or bipole mode.
• A pair of EMBRACE surrounds may be used to the sides, along with a pair of direct-radiator loudspeakers to the rear.
• A pair of EMBRACE surrounds may be used in the Dual Drive™ mode.
NOTE: Each pair of EMBRACE surrounds has distinct left and right versions, as denoted by labels on the rear. To insure correct surround operation, be sure to mount the left speaker on the left wall (as you’re facing the screen) and the right speaker on the right wall.

SPEAKER CONNECTIONS
The EMBRACE surround speakers can be connected to your system in a variety of ways, as discussed in the following sections. Also, please observe these points:
• Use high-quality speaker cable of sufficient gauge (maximum total loop resistance of 0.1 ohms per channel) with high-quality connectors between the speaker and your audio system. Consult your Revel dealer as to specific recommendations for your application.
• Turn off all audio system power before making any connections.
• Read the owner’s manuals that were included with your audio components to confirm their connection procedures.
• Verify correct polarities (i.e., + to + and - to -) when making connections. Failure to do so will degrade the EMBRACE’s performance.
DIPOLE OR BIPOLE SYSTEM CONNECTIONS
For dipole or bipole operation, simply leave the EMBRACE shorting straps in place. Using correct polarity, connect either set of terminals to an amplifier channel output, as shown in Figure 16.

REMOTE DIPOLE/BIPOLE SWITCHING
EMBRACE surround speakers feature remote dipole/bipole selection via a compatible interface with popular system integration systems, as shown in Figure 17. Moreover, most remote systems can also be set up to customize the mode for the type of selection. For example, any “movie” mode could automatically switch the EMBRACE surrounds to dipole mode.
Remote operation is enabled by selecting “REMOTE” on the EMBRACE front-panel switch (see Figure 17). Energizing the EMBRACE Remote Dipole/Bipole connector (on the rear panel) with a voltage from 6.8 to 12 Vdc will engage dipole operation. Contact your Revel dealer for help in enabling this feature for your EMBRACE surrounds.
NOTE: The default mode (on the EMBRACE front panel switch) is set to DIPOLE, and must be set to REMOTE to enable remote dipole/bipole switching.

DUAL DRIVE™ SYSTEM CONNECTIONS
A multi-channel Dual Drive™ controller provides two sets of surround (or rear) outputs and requires connecting two separate audio signals to each EMBRACE, as shown in Figure 18. Also, two channels of amplification will be needed for each surround loudspeaker.
NOTE: Remove the shorting straps from the EMBRACE connector terminals before attempting connection in the Dual Drive™ mode. Serious damage may result to the amplifiers if this precaution is not followed. Also, be sure to set each EMBRACE mode switch (on the front) to “BIPOLE” when using the Dual Drive™ mode.

SYSTEM OPTIMIZATION
The EMBRACE may be operated in either dipole/bipole, remote dipole/bipole, or Dual Drive™ mode. Please refer to the appropriate section to optimize your system response.
DIPOLE OR BIPOLE MODE OPERATION
1. After connecting the EMBRACE speakers and with system power off, initially set the HIGH FREQUENCY LEVEL control on the rear panel to the “0” position, as shown in Figure 19.
2. Set the EMBRACE mode switch to BIPOLE or DIPOLE:
• The dipole position should be used for the greatest freedom
from “localization” and is appropriate for all film sound, since it is always mixed using non-localized surrounds. Most acoustic recordings, including classical, are mixed utilizing the surrounds for a natural ambiance. The dipole mode is also best for such recordings.
• The bipole position may be selected for some discrete multi-
channel recordings that feature equal emphasis on the front and surround (rear) loudspeakers.

CABINET CARE
Each EMBRACE speaker cabinet has a paint finish and does not require any routine maintenance. Use a soft cloth, dampened with water only, to remove any fingerprints or to wipe off dust. Clean the grille by gentle vacuuming.
SPEAKERS AND POWER
An EMBRACE speaker uses high-order crossovers with steep cutoffs to eliminate damage caused by “out of band” frequencies. Using this approach, in combination with carefully selected components and transducers, gives us confidence that a EMBRACE speaker will not fail, even under extreme conditions. However, there is a limit to how loud any speaker can play continuously. A good rule of thumb is to avoid playing the system at volume levels beyond where the sound is “clear.” If the sound becomes distorted or strained, reduce the volume level immediately to avoid damage.
If you are unsure of the suitability of current or planned amplifier components, please ask your Revel dealer to review them before connecting your EMBRACE surround speakers.
