Settings and Processes for 3D Printing
In the first step of the workflow, you imported a model. The next step is to define a Process that specifies how your model will be constructed. A Process is a collection of settings including speed, size, support material, quality levels, etc. Some models are built with one process, while more complicated models may involve multiple processes throughout the build sequence.
The first Process will be configured automatically based on the printer selected in the Configuration Assistant. You’re free to make any adjustments you desire, but it’s a great starting point!
To make adjustments to your Process, double-click on the Process or click Edit Process Settings. This will open the FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) Settings window.

The FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) Settings window contains all the Processes that specify how your model will be constructed:
Select Profile – Allows you to choose a pre-configured printer profile.
Auto-Configure for Material – Allows you to select the material you will be printing with.
Auto-Configure for Print Quality – Allows you to select a pre-configured print quality.
Infill Percentage – Changes the interior solidity of your 3D print. 0% is completely hollow and
100% is completely solid. A value in the range of 20-50% is a good place to start.
Include Raft – Generates a raft structure underneath your part. Rafts are used to improve the
bond to your build platform and may help reduce warping on large models.
Generate Support – Turns on support material for your 3D print. Support structures are similar
Click Show Advanced at the bottom of the FFF Settings window to view additional options and settings that are available within Simplify3D™ Software.
Previewing G-Code Files
“Slicing” is the term used to describe the process of translating a digital model into line-by-line printer instructions called “G-code.” The software slices the model into G-Code based on the variables you have selected in the FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) Settings window.
These advanced setting should be modied by advanced users only! We recommend visiting our Simplify 3D training to get familiar with the advanced setting.
After you have finalized your Process settings, click Prepare to Print! to trigger the preparation of G-Code. Simple models will be sliced in seconds, while complex models may take several minutes. When your G-Code has been created, the software window will transition automatically to Preview Mode. The animated Preview Mode in the Simplify3D™ Software allows you to inspect all aspects of your print operation prior to execution. The software takes your generated G-Code and virtually displays line by line how your model will be constructed.

5. Repetier Server
Repertier-Server is an application for operating the X500 3D printer and initiating 3D prints. You can access your printer from everywhere so it is possible to upload and manage G-Codes from remote. Here it is also possible to check the print progress of your objects and to send individual commands to the 3D printer. In addition to this it provides an easy way to upload rmware updates.
5.1 Web interface
The web interface provides full control of the X500, no matter if you work via a computer, a tablet or even a smartphone. To access the web interface, enter the following adress into your web browser:
IPadress.of.your.3Dprinter:3344
E.g: 192.168.100.1:3344
If you want more information about any particular setting, hover the mouse cursor over that element to display a tooltip describing the functionality. Simplify3D oers a lot of learning support:
Improved adhesion of the printing bed
To ensure a stable printing process we highly recommend activating the “Raft” function in Simplify 3D. You can nd this process conguration option under the menu entry “Additions/Ergänzungen”
During the printing process the “Raft” will be constructed under the actual object to enlarge its bearing surface. This will compensate for possible unevenness of the printing bed and ensure the best possible adhesion for the printing object.
When the printing process is completed the “Raft” must be removed manually. To make this as trouble free as possible it is important to set the “Separation Value” between 0.1 and 0.2mm. You will not be able to remove the “Raft” with a higher value setting.
Please consult the picture on the right-hand side for the complete settings.

extruder is automatically adjusted to the speed by the software, you don’t have to tweak it manually.
Flow: The amount of lament that is extruded is determined by the ow. If the application rate is too
low, you can increase the output manually (in the past experience, 110% has shown good results).
Ideally, your slicing software should contain the correct value for the necessary extrusion multiplier.
Fan: Here you can activate and control a fan in the work space. If your G-Code already contains orders
for the fan control it will over ride your manual conguration.
Extruder: Here you can turn on your extruder and turn it o or control its temperature. In the register
Druckereinstellungen/Extruder/Extruder you can predene the temperatures that will be shown in
the dropdown menu.
Heated bed: Turn the heating bed on or switch it o and control its temperature. In the register Dru-
ckereinstellungen/Extruder/Extruder you can predene the temperatures that will be shown in the
dropdown menu.

6. Tool heads and cosumables
6.1 Tool head wiring
This picture shows how to connect the left respectively right extruder onto the PCB on the toolhead carriage.
Wiring X500, PCB-board
The X500 is delivered with two extruders, the left/ rst extruder sits lower compared to the right/second extruder. This is intentional. We recommend for new users to make their rst 3D printing experience with only one extruder.
6.2 DD4 Extruder
The X500 has a completely new precision measuring technology for its DD4 extruder.
The new technology allows a variable contact pressure for the lament and has preset settings for all GRR laments. As a result, very brittle as well as very exible materials can be processed without further knowledge. This enables the X500 to process future material developments precisely. The cooling circuit allows a stable process even at maximum room temperature.
DD4 dual extruder
By adjusting the knurled screw (image on the next page) you can lower or raise each extruder individually.

6.3 Material Storage
On the left hand side you can nd the material storage of the X500. It is designed for storing one big spool and three small ones.
It also contains the lament surveillance system (fs). This prevents your printer from failing due to a lack of lament while printing. As soon as one of the fs-switches detects that it run out of lament the printer stops and traveses to a parking position.
The heated bed stays hot, to prevent the already printed object from defroming or loosing adhesion to the printbed. The Hotends will be turned o in order to prevent the nozzle from clogging.
6.4 Filament Surveillance (fs) Set-Up
To ensure that the fs is running correctly, please make sure that you have lament inserted in both tubes while the machine is booting.
The switches are not assigned to a specic extruder, so both of them need to be triggered.
If there is no lament inside both tubes fs will not work at all. Inserting lament afterwards won‘t reactivate the fs. To activate the fs please restart your X500 with inserted lament.
material storage, x500
lament surveillance, x500
If you are only using one extruder please ensure that the second fs tube has also lament inserted. (e.g. 20cm leftover lament)
33/45
Page 34
X500
3D printer manual
German RepRap
Attention: Don‘t open the main lid while changing the lament, otherwise the printer will shut down and the current print is lost.
6.4 FS activates while printing
If the fs gets activated while a printjob is currently running, a pause will be executed. The pause is not executed immediately since the printer still has commands inside the buer(16 lines).
While printing very large objects this might cause an error because the hotends get deactiveted immediately, please see the next chapter for a workaround.
Tip: It is easier to insert the lament, when you straighten the end and cut it o diagonally.
If you want to change form PLA to PTEG lament, the nozzle must be heated up to the higher material specic temperature. Otherwise problems may occur when changing the laments. ATTENTION: If you want to use dierent types of laments consecutively, ush the nozzle thoroughly before using the next type of lament. Let at least 500 mm material extrude to ensure that the nozzle will not get clogged.
General tips for the lament change:
Tip: Make sure that the extruder is not heated up for too long when it does not transport lament, otherwise the hot end might clog.

After all pre-stored commands have been executed the printhead moves to a parking position and the extruder pushes out the rest of the lament. Open the door of the material storage and rst take out the leftover lament. After inserting a new spool of lament the hotend gets heated up again and you can feed it through the tube, to the toolhead, by hand. Use the front display to extruder a few centimeters of lament.
Finally press „Proceed Print“ on the display and the X500 continues the printjob.

7.1 Cooling System
The cooling system is liquid based and stops the heat, generated by the hot-end itself, transfering into the mechanical parts of the extruder (upper part). This enchances the process reliability dramatically.
maintenance schedule : every 12 months, exchange liquid every 24 months, exchange hoses
cooling system, x500
The cooling system is located on the right side of the x500, it starts automatically when the printer is turned on. If you are printing without using the heated chamber, please increase the temperature by 20°C (68°F).

7.2 Heated Chamber
The heated building chamber (80 °C max) allows to process the latest technical laments for highly durable parts and functional models. Warping and shrinking eects of conventional laments can be reduced eectively.
You can control the heated chamber via Repetier Server, its stored as „Extruder 3“. Please read chapter „5.4 Device panel - control“ ( p.29) about how to set temperatures in Repetier Server.
Please contact your reseller for further information.
7.3 Z-Home Position
Compared to all other 3D printers from GermanRepRap the homing procedure of the x500 is dierent. Z-home is dened as the lowest point of the Z-axis the printbed can reach.
From here a value is measured called the „Z-MAX length“. This value determins how high the printbed can go. Your X500 is already calibrated, but in case any changes are made to the hot-end, e.g. changing the nozzle, there might be a need for small adjustments.

8.3 PVA solution for enhanced adhesion
Drop an approximate 10 cm long piece of PVA into half a liter of warm water and wait until it is completely dissolved. Apply an thin layer of this solution on the heating bed with a ne brush. When the lm is dried it improves the adhesion between printed object and print bed.
Store the pre-made PVA solution in a sealed container so it can be used in the next print jobs. After the application, the brush should be put into cold water so it is immediately ready for the next use.
8.5 PET-foil for printing bed coating
Please make sure that the device is without power supply while applying PET-foil to the printing bed. Also, please note that the right rear area of the printing bed must not get wet. The bed´s power supply is located here.
The PET-lm functions as the printing bed´s coating and increases the adhesion between the printed object and the heating bed´s surface. In the following we will describe the best way to apply the lm without air bubbles.
Apply a thin layer of water or glass cleaner (silicone free) on the bed´s surface
While pulling o the carrier lm from the PET-lm, wet the adhesive side of the Pet-lm continuo-
usly.
Place the damp side of the PET-lm onto the ceramic plate and align it with the plate
Remove the excess uid with a squeegee. Work from the center outwards. Use a rag to absorb the
excess water.
Please make sure that there is no humidity at or under the heated bed before restarting the machine.
