All users mus t read t hese operat ing ins truc tions care fully prior t o the ini tial operation. These inst ruct ions ar e intended to acquaint the user with the PO RTA- DAVIT 500 and enable him/her to use it to the full extent of its intended capabilities.
The operating instructions contain important information on how t o handle the dav it in a sa fe, corr ect and economic manner. Acting in accordance with these instr uctions helps to avoid dangers, reduce repair cost s and down time and to inc rease reliabilit y and lif etime of the da vit .
Anyone involved in doing any o f the following work with the PO RTA -D AVIT 50 0 must read the opera tion instructions and act accordingly:
Opera tion, including prepar ation, trouble shoo ting
during operation and cleaning
Maintenance, inspection, repair
Tran s por t
Apar t from the operating guide, healt h & safe ty and accident prevent ion ac t valid for the respec tive count ry and area wher e the equipment is used, t he commonly accep ted regulations f or safe and pro fessional work must be adhered to.
It is inc umbent on the user or ins tigator of work wi th the equipment that all users have suitable medical and physical capabilities. Likewise the competent person should e nsure t here is a rescue plan in place in the event of an emergency that could occur during the work.
N.B. This documen t should form an element of the overriding Risk Assessment and Method Statement required for each lift.

CORRECT OPERATION
Intended Use
The P O RTA -DAVIT 500 is int ended t o be used f or the lif ting of goods or t he lif ting o f persons, or for providing a safe ty anchor for t he prevention of falls.
N.B. We recommend that the device is dedicated to either goods or personnel use and where reasonably pract icable t o avoid using the structure for both.
Inspection Prior to Initial Operation
Each davit must be inspected prior to ini tial operat ion by a competent person. The inspection is visual and functional and shall establish tha t the structure is safe and has not been damaged by incorrect assembly, transpor t or storage. The inspec tion should particularly concentrate on:
Dents or inden tations on the kingp in, jib, backstay
(if pre sent) and column sur faces
Straightness of jib and column sect ions
Elongation of the jib holes, column holes or
backstay connection holes
Damage to the shackles, s trop (signs of fraying
– the st rop is manufac tured from p olyester ; if signs of damage, UV degradation or wear REID recommend it is replaced)
The abov e list is no t exhaus tive. Inspections are instigated by the user.
Inspection Before Starting Work
The insp ection proc edure r equir es that a valid inspection/test cer tificat e has been submitted to and checked by the user.
Befor e starting work, inspec t the davit tubes and all load bearing components for visual defects. Furt hermore, tes t the free ro tation of the kingpin and ensure that it is fully engaged in the socket. To check w hether the kingpin is f ully engaged, ensure that t he bot tom of the column is flush wit h the top of the socket. This inspection requiremen t covers only the dav it. Ensure that the overall w orking load limit (WLL) is adher ed to – following the ne cessary Risk Assessment and Method Statement.
Maximum Capacity
The P O RTA -DAV IT 500 is designed to lif t and lower loads up to its rated capaci ty. The c apaci ty indicated on the pr oduct is the maximum working load limi t (WLL) or safe working load (SWL) which must not be exceeded (definition is country dependent), the standard P OR TA -DAVIT 500 is rated to 500kg for goods and 250kg for per sonnel p osit ioning.
When being used as a personnel lif ting anchor the user mus t use a bod y harne ss and retractable device or shock absorber that c omplies with EN355 that limit s the ma ximum ar rest force (M.A.F.) to 6kN. Personnel winches used wit h the P O RTA -DAV IT 500 should c omply t o EN1496:2017 or equiv alent .
Only ONE person/load may be at tached to the davit structur e in accordanc e with the WLL.
If the davit is t o be used for per sonnel w inching the WLLs mus t be observed. It is possible for the davit to have a WLL higher t han is allowable when use d with a fall arrest device. This is for situations where the st ructure is t o be used as an anchor for lif ting persons that have no possibility of falling thr ough a free di stance or when drafting out a rescue plan and should only be carried o ut following a comprehensive risk as sessment.
N.B. If winching, a secondary line/fall arrest unit may also be required.
While t he P OR TA -DAVIT 500 will have the capabilities sta ted on the product it is only one part of a fall arr est system which is onl y as str ong as the lowest rat ed component. Each lif t must be proper ly planned and all weights cl early known along with the WLL and constrain ts of all fall arr est system devices.
In the event of simultaneous goods and personnel combined lif ting or when being used as a f all arr est system in sub-zero AND wet conditions cont act the supplier as capacities may be reduced.
Only a chain hois t up to a capacit y of 500kg may be used with the davit. The st ructure has been designed such that the weight of a c hain block can be neglect ed, however if using a device with a signi ficant weight it should be included into the WLL.
In the event of using a lif ting devic e other than a manual chain hois t part icular a ttention must be paid
4

Verifying the Installation
REID Lifting strongly rec ommends test ing the inst allat ion of the socke t before initial use; especially when using resin bonded anchors.
When verif ying the inst allat ion we recommend that i t is tes ted t o a maximum forc e of 6kN at t he device’s maximum radius, if used for the lift ing of personnel. If only used for t he lif ting of goods, we reco mmend testing to no greater than 125% of the goods’ WLL at its maximum r adius. All tes ts should be carried ou t in all ant icipated wor st case loading direc tions, sust ained for a dur ation of 3 minut es.
If unable to tes t the installation as a whole, then eac h anchor c an be isolated and tested individually applying the applicable loading, i.e. tensi on and/or shear loads. For clar ific ation on the loads contact your equipment supplier.
If an installa tion di ffers fr om the so cket s referred to above, or to tha t specified by your supplier then the compe tent person must ver ify by calculation that the installation can withstand the following:
For per sonnel, 12kN at the device’s maximum
radius in all ant icipated wor st case loading directions but not test t o more than 6kN at the
devic e’s maximum radius
For lif ting of goods, 150% of the goods’ WLL a t
the device’s maximum radius in all anticipated wors t case loading direct ions but not tes t to
more than 125% of the goods’ WLL at the devic es maximum radius
If required a sacrif icial anchor may need to be inst alled t o verify the inst allation has the ultimate capacities required.
Following ini tial socket installation veri fication tests we do not recommend overload tests for the s ocket or davi t and suggest thorough v isual examination only. If the client feels that as a result of a vi sual examination that a load tes t is appr opria te, we would rec ommend a 100% load test and certainl y no greater than 125%.
