Inspection Prior to Initial Operation
Each P ORTA -GANTRY RAPIDE f rame must be inspected prior to initial operation by a compe tent person. The in spection is v isual and func tional and shall establish t hat the structure is safe and has n ot been damaged by incorrec t assembly, tr ansport or storage. Inspections are instigated by the user.
Inspection Before Starting Work
The inspect ion pro cedur e requires that a valid inspection/test certificate has been submi tted to and checked by the user.
Before st art ing wor k inspect the gantr y frame assembly and all load-bearing components for visual defects. Check the integrit y of all profile s for denting and pin/bolt holes for wear and elongation.
Furthermore, test the trolley for free movement along the beam and chec k the operation of the foot ing opt ion.
Ensur e that t he overall WL L limit is adhered to – follo wing the necessary Risk As sessm ent and Method Statement.
Maximum Capacity
The
PO RTA-GANTRY RAPIDE lower loads up t o its r ated capaci ty. The capacity indicated on the frame is the maximum Working Load Limit (WLL) or Safe Working Load (SWL) which must not be exceeded (definition is country dependent).
When being used as a personnel li fting anchor the user must use a body harnes s and retrac table devic e or shock absorber to EN355 , A NSI Z359.6 -09 or CSA Z259.16-04 that limit s the Ma ximum A llowe d Force (M.A.F.) to 6kN. Winc hes used with the

Available as an upgrade the P O RTA -GANTRY RAPIDE 500 can be supplied to mee t the requirement s of Category 2 equipment for use in Zone 1 explosive atmo spheres, providing a high level of pr otection where mixtures of air and gases, v apour s or mists or by air/dusts mixtures are likely to occur.
ATEX - Identification
In addition to the previous marking sec tion the product will have the following identification on the serial label:
As Standard for Zone 2 Environments:
II 3 GD T6
Identification for protection against explosions
II: Unit group II – non-mining application

GD: For u se in gas (G) & dus t (D) atmosp heres
T6:Temperat ure class – M ax 85°C
ATEX - Spark Formation
Incre ased danger of ignition may emanate f rom clashing of special material pairings. These are non corrosion-resistant steel or cast iron against aluminium, magnesium or pertinent alloys. This applie s especially in case of r ust or surfa ce rus t. When assembling the product and inserting fastening components they must be cle ar of rust and debris of any kind. Car e must be taken t o ensur e the pr oduct is handled in a suitable manner, is never thrown and always placed onto the ground.
For Zon e 1 and 2 applications, the height of the PO RTA-GANTRY RAPIDE should NOT be adjusted using the ra tche t mechanism and/or gear ed wheel wit hin the said zone.
REID recommen d the use o f corr osion r esis tant tools when assembling the P OR TA-GANTRY RAPIDE system to prevent t he possibility of any sparks.
For ATEX Z one 1 use, stainless s teel c astor brack ets are fitted to reduce the possibility of a spar k.
ATEX - Static Electricity
For Zone 2 applications s tat ic elec tric ity has been ident ified as pot ential for build up leadi ng to an incendive spark. Al though the risk of such ignition is unlikely the gantr y must be earthed during assembly and use. This can be achieved by attaching a 4mm earthing lead to a con venient location on metallic part s of both the Gantry and Trolley.
In Zone 1 applications, for added explosion protection, the gan try is fit ted with anti-s tatic trolley ro llers, stainless s teel f asteners and therefore does not need to be earthed. How ever, the effectiv eness o f the conductivity during oper ation can be af fected by a dir ty tr ead or other environmental influences and therefore must b e checked by the operat or periodically.

Inspec tions shall be instigated by the user prior to each use if used in a potentially explosiv e atmosphere. Inspec tions and maint enance shall be carried out at a safe distance away f rom an explos ive at mosphere.
Special att ention should be given to dust deposi ts on the st ructure, especially in areas wher e the pr ofiles come into contact , and shoul d be wipe d clean and care t aken no t to appl y materials t hat could crea te electros tatic charging. Addi tionally the bearings in the tr olley r oller s and cas tor s should be checked to ensure they rotate freely.
The st ruct ure is pr edominantl y constructed fr om aluminium which will not rust. However there are steel components used thr oughout. These are the fasteners, castors, master-link, trolley rollers, A-frame height adjust ment ge aring system (if fi tted) and the height adjustment ratchet (if fitted). Where there is sign of any rus t deposits on t he aluminium structur e it should be wiped clean as above and wher e there is sign of rust on a s teel compone nt then that component should be removed from use and the structur e not used unti l a replacement is fit ted.
