RRENCODE CHECKLIST

Use the checklist below as a guideline for encoding your content in REDCINE-X PRO. REDCINE-X PRO and the RRencode Plugin provide many features and offer multiple ways to perform tasks to fit different workflows. RED recommends that you explore and experiment with REDCINE-X PRO and RRencode to determine the most appropriate workflow for your projects.
One factor that determines how to encode your content in REDCINE-X PRO is whether you are encoding a single clip or if you are creating a single encoded clip from multiple video clips:
Encode a single clip: If you want to encode one video clip, ensure that the file and its corresponding audio
file (if applicable) are in the Bin panel when you’re ready to encode. When you encode (export) the clip, make sure that you select Bin (Selected Clips) or Bin (All Clips).
Create a single encoded clip from multiple video clips: If you have multiple video clips that you want to connect
together and encode into a single clip, place these files and their corresponding audio files (if applicable) in the Timeline panel when you’re ready to encode. When you encode (export) the clips, make sure that you select Timeline (All Clips).

CONFIGURE STILL SEQUENCE EDITOR SETTINGS

In REDCINE-X PRO, you can select the color space, gamut, and frame rate for the source file. RRencode uses the source color space, gamma, and frame rate settings to map the source video properly into the .RED file format.
If the color space and gamma values are set incorrectly, the displayed video colors will also be incorrect. If the frame rate of the source file is different than the frame rate of the export frame rate setting, the video may not be properly synced to the audio, unless the length of the source audio WAV file has been appropriately adjusted in order to compensate.
To change the source file color space, gamut, and frame rate, follow the instructions below:
1. Right-click the desired clip in the Bin.
2. Select Still Sequence Editor.
3. Select the desired Gamma option from the drop-down menu.
Available Gamma options include: REC 709, 2.2, 2.6, or LINEAR. The default is REC 709.
4. Select the desired Color Space option from the drop-down menu.
Available Color Space options include: REC 709, P3, XYZ, or sRGB. The default is REC 709.
5. Select the desired Frame Rate option from the drop-down menu.
The default Frame Rate is 23.98 (23.976).
Still Sequence Editor
6. Click Accept.
NOTE: While selecting color space and gamma values, remember to keep the following in mind:
Content graded for HDTV or UHDTV typically uses REC 709 color gamut and gamma. Content graded for digital cinema release typically uses P3 or XYZ color gamut and 2.6 gamma. Content originating from computer graphics applications may use either of the above combinations or
sRGB color gamut and 2.2 gamma.

ADDITIONAL SYNC TIPS
This section provides tips and additional information for performing actions to sync audio and video.
SELECT FRAMES
 By default, the audio waveform displays for the corresponding +/- 12 frames of the video clip. If you want
to see more or less of the audio waveform, select a different value from the Frames drop-down menu in the bottom right corner of the REDCINE-X PRO application.
 If you need to sync a frame of the clip that is not near the beginning, fast-forward to approximately 50
frames before that frame, click Set In Point, then fast-forward about 100 frames and click Set Out Point. Now let those frames buffer. After syncing the clip, clear the sync points by re-clicking the Set Out Point and Set
In Point buttons.
SYNC AUDIO
If you would rather sync a clip to a point in the audio, first find a specific sound in the audio, click Set Audio
Slate Point To Scrubber Position, find and select the corresponding frame in the video, and click Set Video Slate Point.
 If you’re having trouble locating a specific sound in the audio by viewing the waveform, open the audio file
separately in the Bin panel and then drag it into the Viewer. Play the audio file and locate the sound to which you want to sync the video. Make a note of the Clip Frame value at that point. Drag the video back into the Viewer and type the Clip Frame value into the Scrubber field. You can either sync the video and audio to that point, or you can use that point to further refine your sync point.
CLEAR SYNC POINTS
 If you’ve set a video or audio sync point and then decide to resync a clip, make sure that you clear the
original sync points first. To clear the video sync point, select the first frame of the video clip and click Set
Video Slate Point. To clear the audio sync point, simply click Set Audio Slate Point To Scrubber Position.
VERIFY SYNC
 To verify that your clip is correctly synced, check that the audio and video are synced correctly at one point
near the beginning and one point near the end of the clip.
 Verify that the audio run time matches the run time of your video clip. If the two (2) run times are not identi-
cal, trim either your audio or video so that both have the same run time. Or, use a third-party application to extend the run time of your audio file so that it matches the run time of your video. It is NOT recommended that you drop frames from the video in an attempt to shorten your video run time.
 Verify that the frame rate of your source video file matches the frame rate selected in the Still Sequence
Editor window for that clip. For more information on configuring the Still Sequence Editor settings, go to
“Configure Still Sequence Editor Settings” on page 44.
 Ensure that you have the original metadata for the video and audio clip, including the frame rate of your
source video file.

SET MOVIE FRAMING

1. Click the Framing Control panel within the REDRAY panel.
NOTE: The Framing Control Panel is part of the REDRAY panel. For more information on creating a custom
REDRAY panel, go to “Create a REDRAY Panel” on page 37.
2. Since .RED files are encoded at a resolution of 4096 x 2160p, select the proper Fit setting from the drop-
down menu to map your source content:
Fit Height: Select if your source content has an aspect ratio of 16:9. This creates an active image area
of 3840 x 2160p, with additional black bars on either side.
Fit Width: Select if your source content has an aspect ratio of 2.39:1. This creates an active image area
of 4096 x 1714p, with additional black bars above and below.
Framing Control
NOTE: You can also select Stretch W/H and use the Crop settings to map other aspect ratio images or isolate specific areas of the source image into the 4096 x 2160p encoded master. However, RED recommends that you experiment on short clips first to understand the specific effect of each setting before attempting these on full-length features.

ADD CLIPS TO THE TIMELINE PANEL

This section provides information on how to add video clips and their corresponding audio tracks (if applicable) to the Timeline in REDCINE-X PRO.
NOTE: The Timeline panel should only be used to create a single encoded clip from multiple video clips.
1. Click the Timeline panel at the bottom of the REDCINE-X PRO application.
2. Click the first clip of your sequence in the Bin panel and drag the clip to the row labeled V1. Ensure that
the clip snaps to the 00:00:00:00 position. NOTE: Leaving a gap between the 00:00:00:00 position and the start of the first clip will result in a black
screen in the encoded video for the length of that gap.
Add Clip to TIMELINE
When you add a clip that has an external audio file to the Timeline, each audio track in the audio file displays as a separate row in the Timeline panel.
3. In the Timeline panel, click the the channel configuration (from the drop-down menu next to the sequence
name) that matches the number of channels that your audio files have:
Stereo 5.1 Channel 7.1 Channel
NOTE: The RRencode Plugin encodes up to eight (8) channels of audio for each video clip. If you are not encoding content for the REDRAY (if you are not using the RRencode Plugin), REDCINE-X PRO can encode up to 12 channels of audio.

4. Click and drag each additional video clip from the Bin to the row labeled V1, and ensure that each clip snaps
to align with the previous clip. NOTE: Placing a clip over another clip in the row will overwrite part of the previous clip. Leaving a space
between clips will result in a black screen in the encoded video for the length of that gap.

CREATE AND EDIT PRESETS

A preset is a group of encoding settings. When you download the RRencode Plugin, the plugin loads a default preset called REDRAY BASE into REDCINE-X PRO. You can use this default preset to encode content, or create your own preset and customize settings.
1. Click on the Export panel at the bottom of the REDCINE-X PRO application.
2. Click the + in the Export panel.
The Create Preset window opens.
Create Presets
3. Name the new preset in the Preset text box.
4. Select RRENCODE from the File Format drop-down menu.
5. Click Setup.
6. Select the Frame Rate setting that matches the frame rate of the source .R3D, .tif, or .dpx sequence.

7. Select a Quality level from the drop-down menu:
Standard: 9 Mbps Premium: 18 Mbps Cinema: 36 Mbps
8. Select Not Restricted from the Distribution drop-down menu.
NOTE: “Not Restricted” is the only Distribution setting available at this time.
9. Select the following check boxes, as needed:
Generate Poster Frame: Creates a poster frame. Require HDCP On Playback: When this check box is selected, the RRencode Plugin embeds a flag in the
encoded .RED file to enforce HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Copy Protection) on the REDRAY HDMI outputs. It is recommended that you always use HDCP when encoding content for movie distribution or pay-for-view applications. Deselect this check box if you are creating content for applications where you will be using monitors or projectors equipped with DVI or HD-SDI inputs, or other inputs which do not support HDCP. By default, this check box is selected.
Uncompressed Audio: Audio will not be compressed during the encoding process. By default, this check
box is NOT selected. Leaving the audio uncompressed increases the file size of the final encoded content.
NOTE: If you are encoding content that will be used for digital signage applications and that has audio, RED recommends that you select the Uncompressed Audio check box.
NOTE: If you are encoding content that will be used with the Loopback setting enabled, RED recommends that you select the Uncompressed Audio check box.
10. Click OK to return to the Create Preset window.
RRencode Settings
11. In the Output Location section, verify that Custom Output is selected and click Setup.

figure settings. NOTE: The burn-in information is permanently integrated with the encoded clip and cannot be removed later.
15. Click the Audio Tab and configure your audio settings based on the following options:
Audio files are attached to your video clips: Verify that the Enabled check box is selected and that all check
boxes for the 12 Audio Track Channels check are selected.
No audio files are attached to your video clips: Deselect the Enabled check box and click Clear All.
NOTE: The RRencode Plugin encodes up to eight (8) channels of audio for each video clip. If you are not encoding content for the REDRAY (if you are not using the RRencode Plugin), REDCINE-X PRO can encode up to 12 channels of audio, which is why 12 channels display in the Audio tab.
16. Click Save to save the preset.
