For nearly 60 years, analog television has been the broadcast standard. This standard is now
being replaced by digital television, which uses a continuous stream of numbers to transmit
picture, sound, and information. This new method produces amazing results. The RCA HDTV
delivers its brilliantly clear picture on a rectangular 16:9 ratio screen. It also features the
incomparable Dolby

Standard NTSC broadcast
The digital information of HDTV is translated into pixels. The higher the pixel number, the
better the picture. HDTV can receive up to ten times as many pixels as today’s TV—that’s
2,000,0000 pixels compared to 200,000 you get with normal analog technology. That
gives you the sharpest, clearest picture ever available with virtually no lines. The first time
you see the picture on RCA HDTV, you might not believe your eyes.

4:3 aspect ratio, but movie
aspect ratios are closer to
16:9. With RCA HDTV,
you’ll see more — the
whole picture, complete —
of every program broadcast

Pixel Comparison
Today’s broadcast signal lights up about
200,000 pixels arranged in a 4:3 rectangle.
High-definition digital television is different.
At the very minimum, over-the-air digital
television offers a picture that’s 640 pixels
wide by 480 pixels high—that’s over 300,000
pixels (about 50% more than today’s TV).
Since we know that more pixels means more
visual information, we’re talking about a
sharper picture. In the past, a sharper picture
was just...sharper. But with digital television,
there’s a way to quantify just how sharp it is.
From the minimum of 300,000 pixels all the
way up to about a million pixels is called
standard definition digital television, or SDTV.
High-definition digital television, or HDTV,
starts at around a million pixels and can go
all the way up to 2 million—almost 10 times
the resolution of today’s TV.

When will I be able
to see HDTV?
With DIRECTV®, you will have HDTV programming options wherever you live. Over-the-air
broadcasts of digital television begin in the
top ten U.S. television markets in late 1998,
expanding to the top 30 markets gradually
by the turn of the century. All over-the-air
stations must be broadcasting digital signals
by 2003. Current analog signals will be
available at least until 2006.

The Grid Guide
Using the directional arrow pads on your
remote, you may scroll through up-to-theminute TV listings, or scroll to future programs.
As each channel grid is highlighted, the
current program appears in the preview
window, and a description is shown in the
information area to the right of the window.
Or if you can't tear yourself away from the
game, you can continue to watch your
programming in the preview window while
you scan through the program grids.
The Sort Guide
Want to relax and watch a movie?
SORT lists movies by theme that are on
for the next seven days. SORT can also
help you find your favorite game or
sports or children’s programs.

whites, and deep, rich colors even in bright

High Performance Scan Velocity
Modulation (SVM)
Improved SVM circuitry automatically varies
the scanning speed of the picture tube’s
electron beam to improve sharpness and
detail, especially in high-contrast areas.
Custom Convergence
When the earth’s magnetic field interferes
with the Projection TV alignment, adjustable
convergence provides fine tuning for red,
blue and green Projection TV tubes. The
8-bit DA converter allows precise alignment,
restoring picture quality to its original setting.
