Pressing
the INC key once, raises the laya range to the next
higher (faster) range. Pressing the DEC key once, lowers
the laya range to the next lower (slower) range. Pressing
these keys twice or thrice will alter the laya by two or three
ranges respectively, eg., it is possible to alter the laya from
Vilambit to Dhrut by pressing the INC key twice. However,
pressing
the INC key will have no effect once the instrument
has
reached the Dhrut laya range. Similarly, pressing the
DEC
key will have no effect once the instrument has
reached
the Ati Vilambit (slowest) range. (Three
"PIPs"
are
produced in both these cases.)
3.0 OPERATION ON BATTERIES
The "Taalmala" can operate for a limited time on eight 1.5V
dry batteries (size "C"). (A reasonably good set of batteries
would last for about one hour and
thirty
minutes at a stretch
at a medium level of volume). To operate on batteries, set
the switch at the rear of the instrument to BAT and proceed
from step 2.3 above.
Cells
can be replaced by opening the battery compartment
door at the rear of the instrument.

ADDITIONAL
INFORMATION
FOR
"PT24"
The PT-24 model of "Taalmala" is operated in the same
manner as the PT-13 model. The new taals (marked in red)
added in the PT-24 are selected by

pressing the red key
marked ALT followed by any of the 12 taal selection keys.

The PT-24 is capable of being programmed by the user to
play any theka of one's choice, by pressing a sequence of
keys
marked
with
various 'bols'. The programming
sequence
is simple and allows a maximum of three new
thekas to be programmed

played by selecting the ALT key and one of 3 keys marked
GARBA,

Depending on which of these
keys
was used at the time of programming, the new
programmed theka would have replaced one of the above
mentioned taals. The programmed theka would be available
only
till
the instrument is ON. Once the instrument is
switched
OFF,
the programmed thekas would be lost. When
