DTC P0717: INPUT SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT NO SIGNAL
NOTE: For circuit identification, see CONNECTOR
IDENTIFICATION and/or WIRING DIAGRAMS .
Circuit Description
The Input Speed Sensor (ISS) provides transaxle input speed to the PCM. The ISS is a permanent magnet generator. The sensor mounts into the transaxle case, and maintains a slight air gap between the sensor and the drive sprocket. The ISS produces an AC voltage as the drive sprocket rotor teeth pass through the sensor's magnetic field. The AC voltage level increases as the turbine shaft speed increases. The PCM converts the AC voltage into a digital signal. The PCM determines actual turbine speed using the digital signal. The PCM uses the input speed to calculate torque converter slip speed and gear ratios. When the PCM detects a low input speed and the vehicle has a large vehicle speed, then DTC P0717 sets.
Conditions For Running DTC
DTC will run under the following conditions:
No VSS DTCs P0502 or P0503. No TFP manual valve position switch DTC P1810. Engine is running. The TFP manual valve position switch indicates the vehicle is not in Park or Neutral. Vehicle speed is greater than 5 MPH.
Conditions For Setting DTC
DTC will set under the following condition:
Input speed is less than 100 RPM for 5 seconds.
Action Taken By PCM
PCM performs the following if DTC is set:
Illuminates MIL after 2 consecutive trips with failure reported. Freezes shift adapts from being updated. Commands maximum line pressure. DTC P0717 will be stored in PCM history.
Diagnostic Procedure
1. Did you perform the diagnostic system check? If so, go to next step. If not, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

2. Install a scan tool. Turn ignition on, engine off. Record the DTC freeze frame and failure records. Clear the DTC. Start the engine. Select ISS on the scan tool. Is the input speed greater than 500 RPM? If so, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If not, go to next step.
3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect the transaxle 20-way connector. Additional DTCs may set. Install Jumper Harness (J-44152) on the transaxle side of the transaxle 20-way connector. Measure the resistance between jumper harness terminals "S" and "V". Is the resistance 615-835 ohms? If so, go to step 7 . If not, go to next step.
4. Is the resistance greater than 835 ohms? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 6 .
5. Test the ISS high and low signal circuits for a high resistance or an open between the transaxle 20way connector and the ISS. Did you find a high resistance or open condition? If so, go to step 11 . If not, go to step 12 .
6. Test the ISS high and low signal circuits for being shorted together between the transaxle 20-way connector and the ISS. Did you find the condition? If so, go to step 11 . If not, go to step 12 .
7. Measure resistance between jumper harness terminal "S" and ground. Is the resistance less than 1000 ohms? If so, go to step 11 . If not, go to next step.
8. Measure the resistance between jumper harness terminal "S" and all other jumper harness terminals, except terminal "V". Is the resistance between terminal "S" and any other terminal, except terminal "V", less than 1000 ohms? If so, go to step 11 . If not, go to next step.
9. Test the ISS high signal circuit for a high resistance, an open, a short to ground or a short to voltage between the PCM and the transaxle 20-way connector. Did you find and correct a condition? If so, go to step 14 . If not, go to next step.
10. Test the ISS low signal circuit for a high resistance or an open between the PCM and the transaxle 20-way connector. Did you find and correct a condition? If so, go to step 14 . If not, go to step 13 .
11. Replace transaxle internal wire harness. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. After repairs, go to step 14 .
12. Replace input speed sensor. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. After repairs, go to step 14 .
13. Replace PCM. After replacement, program PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. After repairs, go to next step.
14. Perform the following procedure to verify the repair:
1. Select DTC.
2. Select CLEAR INFO.
3. Place the transaxle in Park.
4. Start the engine.
5. The input speed must be greater than 450 RPM for 2 seconds.
6. Select SPECIFIC DTC.
7. Enter DTC P0717.
Has the test run and passed? If so, system is okay. If not, go to step 1 .
Diagnostic Aids
Inspect wiring for poor connections at PCM and at transaxle 20-way connector. Check for bent, backed out, deformed or damaged terminals. Check for weak terminal tension. Check for chafed wire that could
