ProCurve Series 8100fl Operation and Installation Notes
■System Clock. To ensure correct operation of your switch, you must update the system clock and
reload prior to configuration. This is required only for the initial installation and configuration of your
system. See “Setting the System Clock” on page 1 for details.
■Installation Caution. To avoid personal injury or product damage, read the safety warnings and
installation precautions listed in the Installation and Getting Started Guide included with your switch.
Never attempt to mount a ProCurve Switch 8100fl unaided.
■Version B mini-GBICs only. The Series 8100fl Switches do not support “A” version ProCurve
mini-GBICs. Use only ProCurve JxxxxB version mini-GBICs with your switch. See “Mini-GBIC
Operation Notes” on page 3 for details.
■Scratchpad versus Running Config. Configuration commands you enter during a CLI session are
stored in a temporary location called a “scratchpad”, and do not get entered into the running
configuration until you perform a save active command. For details on saving changes to the
startup-config and running-config, refer to the Management and Configuration Guide on the
Documentation CD-ROM included with your switch.
■Console Serial Port is only 9600 baud. There is no auto-baud detect on the switch. To connect a
console to the switch, configure your VT-100 terminal to operate with the following settings:
9600 baud rate/8 data bits/1 stop bit/no parity/no flow control.
■Out of band Management Port. The 10/100Base-T Ethernet port on the management module is for
management only. It cannot be used for switching network traffic. The port is not auto-MDIX.
Setting the System Clock
To set the system date and time, use the clock set command from the command line interface (CLI). For more
information refer to the chapter on “Getting Started with Switch Configuration” in the Installation and Getting Started Guide included with your switch. You can verify the clock settings using the show clock command.
For example:
Switch 8100fl#clock set 18:45:29 30 September 2005
Switch 8100fl#show clock
*18:45:29 UTC Fri September 30 2005

Mini-GBIC Operation Notes
The supported mini-GBICs include the following (any “A” versions are not supported):
■ProCurve Gigabit-SX-LC mini-GBIC J4858B
■ProCurve Gigabit-LX-LC mini-GBIC J4859B
■ProCurve Gigabit-LH-LC mini-GBIC J4860B
■ProCurve 1000Base-T Copper mini-GBIC J8177B
Caution
Use only supported genuine ProCurve mini-GBICs with your switch. Non-ProCurve mini-GBICs are not
supported, and their use may result in product malfunction. Should you require additional ProCurve mini-GBICs,
contact your ProCurve Networking Sales and Service Office or authorized dealer.
Hot Swapping mini-GBICs. The Gigabit-SX, Gigabit-LX, and Gigabit-LH mini-GBICs that you can install in
your ProCurve Switch fl mini-GBIC Module can be “hot swapped”—removed and installed after the module is
installed in the switch and receiving power. You should disconnect the network cables from the mini-GBICs
before hot swapping them.
Connecting the mini-GBICs to Devices with Fixed Configurations. For some older network devices,
including some older ProCurve Networking devices, the default for the Gigabit-SX, Gigabit-LX, and Gigabit-LH
ports is a fixed configuration, for example 1000 Mbps/Full Duplex, or is otherwise different from these default
configurations for the mini-GBICs, which is Auto. As a result, those devices may not connect properly to your
mini-GBIC port; you will not get a link. Because of these default configuration and full-duplex considerations,
for best operation, you should make sure that the devices connected to the mini-GBIC ports are also configured
to Auto. At a minimum, make sure the configurations match.
