Introduction

The Pregis Quantum XT machine dispenses recycled paper void-fill material both on
demand and in predetermined lengths. The ability to distribute paper void-fill material on
demand saves storage space and reduces packaging material waste.

Paper void-fill material is available in 52gsm and 70gsm rolls. The lengths of these rolls are
660m and 400m respectively. All of our paper is 100% recycled, recyclable and
biodegradable.

Additionally, paper void-fill material can be delivered at a user-adjustable rate of up to

1.8m per second, which is unparalleled in the industry.

General Safety

Operator safety and the safety of others in the work area are reliant upon the operator
using good judgment and reasonable care while operating the machine. This operating
manual and any warning labels affixed to the machine provide notification of specific
hazards.

The following instructions are only a guideline and should be considered a supplement to
your plant’s comprehensive safety program. Your business’ policy supersedes these
guidelines if at any time the two contradict each other. Please read and understand the
manual including all of the dangers, warnings, and cautionary statements.

If after reading the manual you have any questions, contact your supervisor or your Pregis
service technician to get answers before operating the machine.

Safety Instructions:

1. Only authorised personnel may use the equipment.

2. Only trained authorised personnel will carry out any adjustments, repairs, maintenance
or cleaning with the equipment isolated from power supply and no longer in motion.

3. Never damage or remove factory installed safety stickers. If a safety sticker ever
becomes lost, damaged, or illegible, report this condition to a supervisor and obtain a
replacement sticker from Pregis.

4. Keep the work area clean and uncluttered. Walking surfaces should always be free of
packing material and debris to prevent a slipping or tripping hazard.

5. Ensure that all covers, guards and other safety devices are in place. NEVER disable a
safety device for any reason.

6. Follow the recommended procedures in this manual.

7. Never leave the equipment unattended while operating. Turn the machine off if you
must leave the work area.

8. Keep body parts and clothing away from moving components. NEVER reach into the
machine for any reason while it is in motion.

9. Make sure you understand the proper loading procedure.

10. Understand which adjustments are operator adjustments; contact maintenance per-
son for all other adjustments.

11. DO NOT operate equipment if you are under the influence of alcohol, drugs or
medications that can make you less alert or affect your judgment.

Understanding the Controls

The Power Switch for the Pregis Quantum XT is used to turn the electrical power “ON”
or “OFF” and is located on the right side of the Head Assembly, next to the Power Inlet.

When operating the Quantum XT, the most commonly used component is the Foot Pedal.

Its functions include:

 Starting and stopping the machine (i.e. dispensing material)

 Reset for PTA (Powered Tear Assist)

 Length override for FTL and A-FTL operating modes

Length Setting:

There are ten preset length settings. Pressing the length adjustment buttons (Add/Subtract)
will adjust the length accordingly. The length setting is only available when the machine is in
Manual Feed-to-Length Mode or Auto Feed-to-Length Mode. With the length set to

“1” (the lowest setting) the machine will dispense a length of material equivalent to two full

revolutions of the drive roller (approx. 460mm). Each addition to the length setting
increases the material length by another full revolution (approx. 230mm) up to a maximum
of eleven revolutions.

There are ten preset speed settings. Pressing the button with a picture of a rabbit will
increase the speed setting, and pressing the button with a picture of a tortoise will
decrease the speed setting. The speed setting is shown on the display and can be adjusted
in any of the three operating modes.

Operation

1. DO NOT attempt to disable any safety feature.

2. DO NOT place any body part or foreign object into the drive.

3. DO NOT operate the machine if any part of your body becomes fatigued.

4. DO NOT operate the machine if you are under the influence of alcohol, drugs or
medications that can make you less alert or affect your judgment.

Operating Modes:

The Quantum XT machine can be operated in one of three modes: Manual Mode, Manual
Feed-to-Length Mode (FTL) and Auto Feed-to-Length Mode (A-FTL). These modes share
certain features which are detailed below. To switch between modes, press the Operating
Mode Control Button until the desired mode is selected.

Manual Mode:

This setting allows the operator to dispense material using the foot pedal only. The length
setting cannot be adjusted in Manual Mode. Instead the foot pedal is used to determine the
length - the longer the foot pedal is held down, the greater the length of packaging material
produced. The speed setting can be adjusted to suit the user.

Manual Feed-to-Length Mode (FTL):

This setting allows the operator to dispense a preset length of material by activating the
foot pedal briefly (i.e. “tapping” the foot pedal). Once the foot pedal is “tapped” the
machine will dispense a preset length of material. The operator must repeat this process
to receive additional, preset lengths of material. In this mode, the foot pedal also acts as a
length override - to receive a length of material greater than the preset length, press and
hold the foot pedal until the desired length is achieved. The preset length can be adjusted
using the Add/Subtract buttons on the Head Assembly.

Auto Feed-to-Length Mode (A-FTL):

This setting allows the operator to dispense a preset length of material. Once the
Powered Tear Assist feature is activated (see Powered Tear Assist section) the machine
will automatically dispense another preset length of material (same as previous). This pro-
cess will continue as long as the machine is in A-FTL mode. In this mode, the foot pedal
also acts as a length override - to receive a length of material greater than the
preset length, press and hold the foot pedal until the desired length is achieved. The
preset length can be adjusted using the Add/Subtract buttons on Head Assembly.

Tear Assist Assembly

Powered Tear Assist (PTA):

This feature was designed to reduce the amount of force required to tear the packaging
material. Once the material has been dispensed, the Powered Tear Assist feature
becomes active. To use this feature, simply pull the void-fill material against the Tear
Assist Assembly in a downward motion as shown below. The Tear Assist Assembly will
pivot downward slightly, which activates an internal switch. Once the switch is activated,
the machine will rotate the motor in reverse, pulling the material against the Tear Assist
Assembly, which tears the material.

Note: In A-FTL Mode, this feature resets after each cycle. When in Manual or
FTL Mode, the function can be reset by pressing the foot pedal.

Maintenance

The Quantum XT is designed to require little to no maintenance. The following
recommended maintenance items will help keep the Quantum XT operating correctly
and minimize any downtime on your packaging line. If there are any questions regarding
the maintenance of the Quantum XT, please contact your local Pregis Service Technician
for assistance.

Electrical shock or unexpected machine movement can cause injury. Unplug
the machine before performing maintenance tasks.

Disconnect the power lead before performing ANY maintenance to the machine other
than inspections.

Monthly Maintenance:

1. Machine should be cleaned to maintain a clean work environment.

2. Verify all components are working properly. If there are any issues, please contact your
Pregis Service Technician.

Troubleshooting

Electrical shock or unexpected machine movement can cause injury. Unplug
the machine before performing troubleshooting tasks.

Problem: Machine will not power on.

Cause: Machine not set-up properly.

Solution: a. Verify LCD display is off.

b. Check power lead. Make sure it is plugged in
correctly to a functioning power source.
c. Verify power switch is in the “On” (I) position.

Problem: Machine is powered on but will not run.

Cause: Power lead/foot pedal cable not connected

properly.

Solution: Verify cable connections.

Problem: Upper roller assembly keeps “popping up” while

running material.

Cause: Magnet block assembly not properly adjusted.

Solution: Contact Pregis Service Technician.
