Warranty Information
Warranty policy
PQI warrants that the JoyTone U650, under normal circumstances of usage, is free from mate­rial and workmanship defects for a one-year period from the date of purchase. For any unit proved to be defective within this period, PQI will, at its discretion, either repair or replace the unit, free of charge. The replacement unit will be either new or refurbished to be functionally equivalent to new, at PQI's option. Willful damage to the product, damage due to neglect or ignorance, or tampering with the prod­uct components will void the warranty.
Warranty procedure
To request servicing or repair assistance from PQI, please do the following:
• Contact the PQI customer service department using the contact information provided in this manual.
• Have the product receipt or serial number ready when you contact the PQI customer ser­vice department. This will be considered as the proof of your purchase and will help you to get service more quickly.
• Follow the instructions for returning the product. Our service personnel will provide a return merchandise authorization (RMA) number and shipping instructions for returning the product. No return will be accepted without the pre-authorization and the RMA num­ber clearly marked outside the shipping box.
• Make sure that you pack the JoyTone U650 in a protective package and prevent its damage during shipping and handling. Ship the product to our customer service department as instructed by our personnel.

Safety Warnings for Earphones
Road Safety: Do not use earphones while driving, cycling or
operating any kind of motorized vehicle. Driving while using earphones creates a traffic hazard and is illegal in some countries. It is also potentially dangerous to use earphones while walking, especially at pedestrian crossings.
Preventing Hearing Damage: Do not use earphones at high volume for a long time. It can seriously impair your hearing ability. If you experience ringing in your ears, reduce the volume or stop using the product.
Use the neck strap with caution. It might get caught in doors and cause physical injury.

The JoyTone U650 MP3 Player offers high quality audio playback and voice recording functions at low power consumption.
The JoyTone U650 MP3 Player supports the MP3 music format for your listening pleasure. Moreover, the five built-in EQ modes of the JoyTone U650 MP3 Player enable you to enjoy music of the best sound quality.
The recording function enables you to record your voice from the built-in microphone.
The JoyTone U650 is not only great for MP3 files, but is also great for carrying your data. Its convenient driver-free plug and play operation allows you to use it as a USB flash disk on Win­dows XP, 2000, and ME and also on the Mac OS. A driver is provided for Windows 98.
In this manual, you will find detailed descriptions and operating instructions for every function of the JoyTone U650. Read this manual carefully to learn how to use these convenient functions and enjoy high quality music with the JoyTone U650.

Getting Started

Inserting a Battery in the Player

1. Pull out the USB Cover in the direction shown in the illustra­tion.
2. Open the battery compartment cover.
3. Remove the old battery.
4. Insert a new battery.

Notes:
• Ensure that the polarity is correct when inserting a battery.
• Remove the battery when the player is not in use for a long time, to avoid damage by corrosion.
• When the batteries are fully charged, the JoyTone U650 can play MP3 music for about 12 hours. How­ever, the exact replay time is subject to the condition of the battery, the bit rate and the format of the file being played.

Connecting the Earphones

Plug the earphones into the earphone jack on the player.

Connecting the JoyTone U650 to a PC

Connect the JoyTone U650 to your PC by plugging it
into the PC’s USB port or a USB hub.
When the JoyTone U650 is successfully connected to the PC, a new Removable Disk icon appears in the My Computer window on your PC.

Using the Player

This section describes how to use the JoyTone U650.

Turning the JoyTone U650 On and Off

Press the power button for a second to turn on the JoyTone U650. After the welcome note is dis­played, the JoyTone U650 enters MP3 playback mode automatically. If there are files on the JoyTone U650, the titles of these files are displayed on the screen.
Press and hold down the power button for 2 seconds to turn the player off. The message ‘Bye Bye’ is displayed on the screen before the power goes off.
Note: The JoyTone U650 turns off automatically when idle for a minute to save energy. This function is disabled when the JoyTone U650 is connected to a PC.

Transferring Data to the JoyTone U650

You can transfer your music files to the JoyTone U650 using Windows Explorer. Connect the JoyTone U650 to the PC as described in “Connecting the JoyTone U650 to a PC” on page 8.
1. Locate the MP3 files using Win­dows Explorer.
2. Select the desired files on your PC and drag them to the new Remov- able Disk. The selected files will be transferred to the JoyTone U650.

Playing MP3 Music Files

Follow these steps to start listening to your favorite music on the JoyTone U650 MP3 Player.
1. Turn on the JoyTone U650.
2. Press the MODE jog dial to enter system mode. Rotate the MODE jog dial to select MP3 Mode and then press the MODE jog dial to confirm.
3. Press the playback button to play the current track.
4. Rotate the MODE jog dial left or right to skip to the previous or next tracks.
5. Press the playback button again to pause playback. Press the playback button again to resume playback.
6. Press the + or buttons to increase or decrease the volume during playback. The LCD screen shows the volume setting when you change the volume.
Note: MP3 files can only be played under the root directory.

Repeat Play

Use the repeat function to play a selected track, section, all files, or a random file repeatedly.
1. Press and hold the MODE jog dial for two seconds. A popup menu appears.

A-B Repeat

This repeat function is used to repeat a section of the currently playing song. The following is the procedure to repeat a section of the currently playing song:
1. Play the song and mark the beginning of the section to be repeated by pressing the jog dial for less than 2 sec­onds.
2. Mark the ending of the sec­tion by pressing the jog dial again. The function is now activated and repeats the marked section.
3. To end repeating, press the jog dial once again.

Playing Back MP3 Files Using the USB Port

To play back MP3 files when the player is plugged into the PC’s USB port, do the following:
1. Plug the player into the USB port while keeping the power button pressed.
2. Release the power button after the OSD is displayed on the JoyTone U650.
MP3 playback begins automatically.

Selecting an EQ Mode

The JoyTone U650 provides five equalizer modes (EQ) to enhance audio quality. Follow these steps to select the EQ mode.
1. Press and hold the MODE jog dial for two seconds. A popup menu appears.

2. Press the MODE jog dial to select the EQ option.
3. Rotate the MODE jog dial to select the desired EQ mode (Flat, Rock, Jazz, Pop or Classical).

Using the Recorder Function

Follow these steps to record your voice using the built-in microphone.
Note: The Recording function is disabled when the battery is low.
1. Press the MODE jog dial to enter system mode.
2. Rotate the MODE jog dial to select REC Mode and then press the MODE jog dial to con­firm.

3. Press the playback key to start recording and then speak into the microphone.
4. Press the playback key to pause recording. Press it again to resume recording.
5. Press and hold the playback key for two seconds to stop recording.

Setting Recording Parameters

Follow these steps to set recording parameters:
1. After selecting REC Mode, press the MODE jog dial for two seconds to display the parameter menu.

Indicates the bit rate at which voice is recorded
Indicates microphone sensitivity. The higher the sensitivity, the greater the distance from which voice can be recorded.
When set to VOR, voice operation recording is enabled. Voice operation recording automatically pauses recording when there is no voice or sound, to prevent unnecessary recording, and blank spaces in the recording.

Playing Back Recorded Voice Files

VOICE mode enables you to play back your voice recordings. All recordings are saved as MP3 files with a filename such as AUDIO001.MP3. The number at the end of the filename indicates the order in which the recordings were saved. Follow these steps to listen to your recorded voice files.
1. Turn on the JoyTone U650.
2. Press the MODE jog dial to enter system mode menu. Rotate the MODE jog dial to select VOICE and then press the MODE jog dial to confirm.
3. Press the playback key to play the current file.
4. Rotate the MODE jog dial left or right to skip to the previous or next tracks.
5. Press the playback button again to pause playback. Press the playback button again to resume playback.
6. Press the + or buttons to increase or decrease the volume during playback.The LCD screen shows the volume setting.

Note: The repeat play and equalizer functions are also available when you play back a recording. Refer to “Repeat Play” on page 11 and “Selecting an EQ Mode” on page 13 for more details.

Deleting Files from the JoyTone U650

Follow these steps to delete files from the JoyTone U650.
1. Turn on the JoyTone U650.
2. Press and hold the MODE jog dial for two seconds. A popup menu appears.
3. Select either VOICE or MP3 mode.

Notes:
• The Delete all files option deletes all files while the delete one file option deletes the currently dis­played file.
• The Del option is available only when the player is not playing back a file.

Troubleshooting

Please refer to the following if there are problems with the player.
Symptom: No power Check that the battery is inserted correctly.
Symptom: No sound
• Check that the earphone is connected to the earphone jack.
• Check that the volume is not at 0.
Symptom: Noise
• Check for any foreign substance on the earphone jack.
• Corrupted MP3 files may cause a static noise and interrupted sound. Check for any file corruption.
Symptom: Download failure Check that the USB port is properly connected.
Symptom: Playing time is not displayed properly Files with VOR may not display the play time properly. This is normal.
Symptom: You hear two audio streams at the same time. You have the FM radio on at the same time you are listening to MP3 files. Turn off the MP3 or FM radio to listen to one audio stream.
