Never use choke to stop engine.
11
IMPORTANT: LEAVING THE IGNITION SWITCH IN ANY
POSITION OTHER THAN "OFF" WILL CAUSE THE BATTERY TO BE DISCHARGED, (DEAD).
NOTE: Undercertainconditionswhen tractorisstandingidle with the engine running, hot engine exhaust gases may cause "browning" of grass. To eliminate this possibility, always stop engine when stoppingtractor on grass areas.
& CAUTION: Always stop tractor com- [
pletely, as described above, before leav- ing the operator's position; to empty grass catcher, etc.
TO USE THROTTLE CONTROL (See Fig. 6)
Always operate engine at fullthrottle.
Operating engine at less than full throttle reduces the batterycharging rate.
Full throttleoffers the best bagging and mower perfor-
mance.

mentknob in desired direction.
Turn knobclockwise (F_) to raise cutting height.
Turn knob counterclockwise (_)to lower cutting
height.
The cuttingheight range isapproximately 1-1/2" to 4". The
heights are measured from the ground tothe blade tip with theengine notrunning. These heights are approximate and may vary depending upon soil conditions, height of grass and typesof grass being mowed.
The average lawn should be cut toapproximately 2-1/2
inches during the cool season and to over 3 inches dudng hot months. For healthier and better looking
lawns,mow oftenand after moderate growth.
For best cuffing performance, grass over 6 inches in height should be mowed twice. Make the first cut relatively high;the second to desired height.

OPERATION
BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE
CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL (See Fig. 15)
The engine in your tractor has been shipped, from the factory, already filled with summer weight oil.
Check engine oil with tractor on level ground.
Remove oilfillcap/dipstick and wipe clean, reinsertthe dipstick and screw cap tight, wait for a few seconds,
remove and read oil level. If necessary, add oil until
"FULL" mark on dipstick is reached. Do not overfill.
For cold weather operation you should change oil for
easier starting (See "OIL VISCOSITY CHART" inthe Customer Responsibilities section of this manual).
Tochange engineoil, see theCustomer Responsibit_es section in this manual.
ADD GASOLINE
Fill fuel tank. Use fresh, clean, regular unleaded gasoline with a minimumof 87 octane. (Use of leaded
gasoline will increase carbon and lead oxide deposits and reduce valve life). Do not mix oil with gasoline.
Purchase fuel in quantities that can be used within 30
days to assure fuel freshness. IMPORTANT: WHEN OPERATING IN TEMPERATURES BELOW 32°F(0°C), USE FRESH, CLEAN WINTER GRADE
GASOLINE TO HELP INSURE GOOD COLD WEATHER STARTING.
WARNING: Experienceindicates thatalcohol blendedfuels
(called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol) can attract moisture which leads to separation and formation of acids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of
an engine while instorage. To avoid engine problems, the fuel system shouldbe emptied before storage of 30 days or
longer. Drainthe gastank, startthe engine and letit rununtil the fuel lines and carburator are empty. Use fresh fuel next
season. See Storage Instructionsforadditional informalion. Never use engine orcarburetor cleaner products in thefuel
tank or permanent damage may occur.
CAUTION: Fill to bottom of gas tank I
filler neck. Do not overfill. Wipe off any
I
spilled oil or fuel. Do not store, spill or use gasoline near an open flame.
TO START ENGINE (See Fig. 5)
When startingthe engine forthe firsttime oriftheengine has
run out of fuel, itwill take extra cranking time to move fuel
from the tank to the engine.

NOTE: Before starting, read the warm and cold starting proceduresbelow.
Insert key into ignition and tum key clockwise to "START" position and release key as soon as engine
starts. Do not run starter continuously for more than fifteen seconds per minute. If the engine does not start after several attempts, move throttle control to fast
position, wait a few minutes and try again. Ifengine still does not start, move the throttle control back to the
choke positionand retry.
WARM WEATHER STARTING (50 ° F and above)
When engine starts, move the throttle controltothe fast
position.
The attachments and ground ddve can now be used. If the engine does not accept the load, restart the engine
and allow itto warm up for one minute usingthe choke as descdbed above.
COLD WEATHER STARTING ( 50° F AND BELOW)
When engine starts, allow engine to runwiththe throttle control in the choke position until the engine runs
roughly, then move throttle control tofast position. This may require an engine warm-up period from several
secondsto several minutes, depending onthe tempera-
ture,
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WARM UP
Befora ddvingthe unitincold weather, thetransmission shouldbe warmed up as follows:
Be sure the tractor is on level ground.
Place the motion control lever in neutral. Release
the parking brake and let the clutch/brake s Io w Iy
returntooperating position.
Allow one minute for transmission to warm up. This
can be done duringthe engine warm upperiod.
The attachments can also be used during the engine warm-upperiodafterthe transmission hasbeenwarmed up.
NOTE: If at a high altitude (above 3000 feet) or in cold temperatures (below 32 F) the carburetor fuel mixture may
need tobe adjusted for best engine performance. See =TO ADJUST CARBURETOR" in the Serv!ce and Adjustments section of this manual.
PURGE TRANSMISSION
I& AUTION: Neverengageordisengage I
freewheel lever while the engine is run- ning,
To ensure proper operation and performance, itis recom- mended that the transmission be purged before operating
tractor for the first time. This procedure will remove any trapped air inside thetransmission which may have devel-
opedduring shipping of your tractor. IMPORTANT: SHOULD YOUR TRANSMISSION REQUIRE
REMOVAL FOR SERVICE OR REPLACEMENT, IT SHOULD BEPURGED AFTER REINSTALLATION BEFORE OPERATING THE TRACTOR.

OPERATION
Sifting in the tractor seat, startengine. Afterthe engine
is running, move throttle control to slow position. With motion control lever in neutral (N) position, slowly disengage clutch/brake pedal.
Move motion control lever to full forward position and
hold for five (5) seconds. Move lever to full reverse position and hold for five (5) seconds. Repeat this procedure three (3) times.
NOTE: Dudng this procedure there will benomovement of drive wheels, The air is being removed from hydraulic ddve system.
Move motioncontrol lever toneutral (N) position.Shut- offengine and set parking brake.
Engage transmission by placing freewheel control in ddving position (See "TO TRANSPORT" inthissection
of manual).
Sifting in the tractor seat, start engine. After the engine isrunning, move throttle controlto half (1/2) speed. With motion control lever in neutral (N) position, slowly disengage clutch/brake pedal.
Slowly move motion control lever forward, after the
tractor moves approximately five (5) feet, slowlymove motion controllever to reverse position.Afterthe tractor moves approximately five (5) feet return the motion control lever to the neutral (N) position. Repeat this procedure with the motioncontrollever three (3) times.
Your tractor is now purged and now ready for normal
operation.
MOWING TIPS
Mower should be propedy leveled for best mowing performance. See "TO LEVEL MOWER HOUSING" in the Service and Adjustments section of this manual.
The lefthand side ofmower shouldbe usedfortdmming.
Drive so thatclippings are discharged ontothearea that
has been cut. Have the cut area to the right of the machine. This will result in a more even distdbutionof
clippings and more uniformcuffing.
When mowing large areas, startbytuming to the dght so
that clippings will discharge away from shrubs,fences_ driveways, etc. After one or two rounds, mow in the opposite direction making left hand turns untilfinished
(See Fig. 10).
If grass is extremely tall, itshould be mowed twice to
reduce load and possible fire hazard from dried clip- pings. Make first cut relatively high; the second to the desired height.
Do not mow grass when itis wet. Wet grass will plug mowerand leave undesirableclumps. AIIowgrasstodry
before mowing.
Always operate engine at full throttle when mowing
to assure better mowing performance and proper dis- charge of material. Regulate groundspeed by selecting a low enough gear to give the mower cutting perfor- mance as well as the quality of cut desired.
When operating attachments, select a ground speed that will suittheterrain and givebest performanceofthe attachment being used.

MULCHING MOWING TIPS
IMPORTANT: FOR BESTPERFORMANCE, KEEPMOWER HOUSING FREE OF BUILT-UP GRASS AND TRASH. CLEAN AFTER EACH USE.
The special mulchingbladewill recutthegrass clippings many times and reduce them insize so that as they fall
onto the lawn they willdisperse intothe grass and notbe
noticed. Also, the mulched grass will biodegrade quickly to provide nutrientsfor the lawn. Always mulch with your highest engine (blade) speed as this will provide the best recuttingaction of the blades,
Avoid cutting your lawnwhen itiswet. Wet grass tends
toform clumps and interferes withthe mulching action. The best time to mow your lawn is the eady aftemoon. At this time the grass has dded and the newly cut area will not be exposed tothe direct sun.
For best results, adjustthe mower cuttingheight so that
the mower cuts off onlythe top one-third of the grass blades (See Fig. 11). For extremely heavy mulching,
reduce your widthofcuton each pass and mow slowly.
Certain types of grassandgrassconditions may require that an area be mulched a second time to completely
hide the clippings. When doing a second cut, mow
across or perpendicular to the firstcut path.
Change your cutting pattem from week to week. Mow
north tosouth one week then change toeast to west the next week. This will helpprevent matting and graining
of the lawn.
