Precautions
• The HeadStart™ Notication Sensor is a non-invasive way to monitor
patient movement. This device DOES NOT prevent falls and is not a substitute
for good nursing care and regular visual monitoring. The two head of bed
siderails may be used, as per the facility’s overall fall prevention program.
• The HeadStart™ Notication Sensor is designed for use with Posey alarms
ONLY. Read and follow all instructions for the Posey alarm. Test with
Posey alarm prior to application (see Releasing Belt & Testing Alarm)
• NEVER connect to other manufacturers’ alarm units.
• Read this entire instruction sheet and save for future reference.
3. Position the narrow straps so the “this side
facing out” label is visible (Fig. 3). Attach
narrow straps to the part of the bed frame that
moves with the patient. Do not twist straps. Do
not attach to side rail, headboard or footboard.
a. Secure velcro as shown in (Fig. 3). The
narrow straps may be wrapped twice
around attachment points to decrease
the length of the strap. At least 3” of
velcro should be engaged for proper
securement.
b. Check that straps are secure and will not
change position, loosen, or tighten if the
patient pulls on them or if the bed is adjusted.
Straps should be snug on mattress/frame
with no slack in the strap.
4. To open the belt, release both sets of velcro
with yellow handles. Position patient in the
supine position (face up) on center of the bed
with the belt at waist level. Patient’s garments
should cover skin to avoid direct contact with
device.
5. Secure belt around patient by fastening blue
velcro pieces (Fig. 4). Belt should fall just above
hips or at the narrowest part of the waist. Belt
should be snug, but not cause any discomfort
to the patient. Secure with space to slide a at
hand between the belt and the patient.
6. Slide adjustable handle to connect white
velcro pieces ensuring the velcro is aligned
and secured for proper operation,
tuck/cover inner yellow handle (Fig. 5).
7. Connect cord to alarm at jack labeled “SENSOR.” Ensure alarm is on
and monitoring.
8. Use both hands to squeeze velcro rmly with ngers and thumbs (Fig. 7)
(on underside of belt and top of belt) to activate alarm and ensure proper
device function and prevent false alarms.
Releasing Belt & Testing Alarm:
1. Pull on rst yellow handle to disconnect
white velcro (Fig. 8).
2. Pull on second yellow handle to disconnect
blue velcro. Release belt from patient. (Fig. 9)
3. To resume monitoring, re-connect blue velcro
set, then connect white velcro set. Squeeze
velcro rmly to activate alarm and ensure
proper device function.

Application Instructions
WARNING
• This product is indicated for use in a hospital bed. Refer to the Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) website for the most recent Hospital Bed Safety
Guidelines as well as the Bed Manufacturer’s Instructions for Use.
• Before leaving the patient unattended, explain the purpose for the belt.
Make sure the patient understands:
° the need to call for assistance before exiting the bed; and
° how to self-release
• NEVER jerk or pull on cord to remove plug from alarm. Doing so may
damage the cord or plug and may cause belt to fail. ALWAYS use plastic
tab to release the plug.
• A clinical assessment and decision are required when used with wound or
surgical site, ostomy, colostomy, G-tubes; hernias, monitoring lines, or other
surgical drains/tubes .
• Not for use on patients at risk for suicide. Not for use anywhere else a
clinician deems unnecessary.
• If narrow straps on the back of the belt are
not properly criss-crossed upon application
(Fig. 10), the patient’s ability to roll may be
affected. This improper application will be
indicated by visibility of the small white velcro
squares on the back of the belt (Fig. 11). These
help align the straps for reattachment to the
bed and are designed to release when the
patient rolls from side to side.
• Ensure proper sizing. Excess belt may be
placed at around patient’s waist or can be
folded comfortably without compromising
eicacy of sensor (Fig. 12).
• Wrapping excess belt completely around
patient’s back may hinder their ability to
self-release (Fig. 13).
• Any attempt to release the product from the
patient without using the indicated release
handles is considered misuse and could
potentially lead to patient bed exit without
alarm.
