The MB1 monitor has been developed to provide an important recording tool for professional
users and the ultimate in sound reproduction in the home. This passive version employs
identical cabinet and driver assemblies, and is therefore upgradable to a fully active system
at a later date.
The design approach has been to integrate three of the finest drivers in time and amplitude
with steep 24dB/octave filters and integrate them in a transmission line enclosure. Such a
coupling allows the MB1 monitors to achieve a usable response to 20 Hertz hand in hand with
precise three dimensional image placement.
In order to take full advantage of their superb performance, please ensure you fully
understand how to install and use the loudspeakers by carefully reading through the following
information.
Unpacking
The MB1 monitors are separately packed inside a heavy duty outer protective cardboard
casing. Take care when removing and handling the units. Please retain the packing materials
for later use.
In addition to each main unit the packaging will contain the following items:
3 off Neutrik Speakon NL4FC connectors per loudspeaker
1 off 1.5 mm Allen Key.
Please notify your distributor in the event of a shortage.
Before connection carefully remove the two cardboard sheets protecting the high and mid
frequency drivers beneath the grille frame.

Connection
On the rear sloped section at the bottom of the cabinets there are three round Neutrik
sockets for connection to your amplifier using the supplied NL4FC Speakon loudspeaker
connector. Details on how to connect your cables to the plugs follows below.
The MB1 may be connected using two wires as standard, four wires for bi-wire or six wires for
tri-wire connection. They are factory set for standard two wire operation, however your dealer
is able to remove internal links on the crossover to enable bi-wiring and tri-wiring.
Standard two wire connection
Connect your loudspeaker cable to a Speakon plug and insert into any of the three rear
sockets illustrated below.
Bi-wire connection
Connect a Speakon plug to the two cables and insert the low frequency feed into the left
hand socket and the high frequency feed into the right hand socket. There is no connection
to the centre socket.(see illustration below)
Tri-wire connection
Connect a Speakon plug to the three cables and insert the low frequency feed into the left
hand socket, the mid frequency feed into the middle socket and the high frequency feed
into the right hand socket.(see illustration below)
The Neutrik Speakon
The use of the Neutrik Speakon provides loudspeakers with a dedicated input connector
which has been designed for high current loads. It avoids the problems with other methods of
termination such as binding posts and 4mm banana plugs and sockets. Most importantly it
offers a consistent, reliable and far superior high current termination.

To assist in its use we have provided a step by step guide to termination and use of the
connector.
Figure 1: The Neutrik NL4FC - SPEAKON
To connect your cable to the Speakon, unscrew the blue cable gland and remove the black
cable clamp and terminal assembly from the connector body (see figure 1). Slide the cable
gland and clamp over the end of your cable. An alternative white clamp is supplied for
smaller diameter cables.
Use the supplied Allen key to undo and tighten the grub screws on the terminal assembly. If
you prefer the cables may be soldered in place.
The pins of the terminal assembly are numbered and identified as detailed in the following
diagram and table.

1- Amplifier output (-)
2+ No connection
2- No connection
Following the insertion of the cables, the connector may be re-assembled. Carefully insert the
terminal assembly making sure that the locating lug has engaged correctly in the connector
body. Now, slide the cable clamp into the connector body again making sure that the
locating lug is engaged. The cable gland may now be screwed firmly into place until the
cable is clamped.
Before you plug the connector into the loudspeaker ensure that the security ring is fully anticlockwise. Please note that once inserted the Speakon needs to be turned clockwise until it is
fully engaged. The security ring can then be turned to lock the connector in place.

Loudspeaker Placement
All loudspeakers are influenced by the acoustic of the room in which they are placed. The
negative and positive effects of your listening room can, however, be manipulated to some
extent by careful positioning. Experimentation with placement cannot be overstated.
The MB1 monitors have a very extended low frequency response and therefore do not rely on
close proximity to walls or floors to enhance their low frequency performance. We
recommend a stand height of ten inches. Movement near the rear wall will lift the low
frequency response and can be used to adjust the in-room balance.
An extremely wide dispersion characteristic allows the MB1 to produce precise three
dimensional images in your listening room, height as well as depth and width. Reflections from
hard surfaces near the monitors will, however, impair the image.
Manipulating your monitors placement will eventually reveal a position which gives the
optimum balance between imaging, low frequency level and what is practical to live with!
Running In
All new loudspeakers require a period of running in. This allows for the settling of materials used
in the drive units. The MB1 is no exception to this rule, best results will be achieved from newly
supplied monitors after a period of between 10 and 20 hours running in.

Care of your Monitors
There are no user serviceable parts within the MB1 monitors. The cabinets should be cleaned
with a damp cloth. Take care when using wax or spray polishes.
Service
In the unlikely event of a technical problem arising please contact the dealer from whom the
monitors were purchased and describe the symptoms of the fault to him. He may be able to
suggest a solution to your problem immediately.
If you wish to return your monitors please contact your distributor or ourselves first for advice
regarding transportation. No responsibility will be held for damage to the monitors if they are
packed incorrectly.
Safety Warning
The MB1 monitor system is capable of high sound pressure levels without compression when
fed with high level signals.
Warranty
The Professional Monitor Company's MB1 monitor is guaranteed against any defect in
material or workmanship for a period of twelve months from date of purchase. Within this
period, the supply of replacement parts will be free of charge provided that the failure was
not due to misuse, accident or negligence.
