About Software
In order to create CD-R and CD-RW discs you will need to have mastering, p acket writing, or duplication software installed on your computer system. If you purchased a retail kit from Plext or, youll get software packages that include such software.
For details on the various software packages for writing to CD-R or CD-RW, please visit the web sites of the companies whose software you are interested in, refer to their user’s manuals, or look at the help option within the software. A list of various software packages that you can use with your Plextor drive can be found in the Support/Compatibility section of www.plextor.com

Precautions
Like the rest of your computer system, your PlexWriter requires reasonable care in its installation and use.
Keep the area around your drive clean from dust, smoke, and other contaminants.
Do not allow moisture or liquids, including water or cleaning fluids, to touch the drive. Thinner, benzene, or alcohol-based solvents can mar your drives surface.
Do not drop or jolt the drive.
Do not move, carry or transport a disc in the drive because this can cause damage.
Do not attempt to open the drive and service it yourself. Removin g the cover may expose you to harmful electrical voltages or the laser beam. For your safe ty, entrust service to experienced service personnel only.
Keep your CD discs free of dirt or other contaminants, by storing them in jewel cases. Use only industry-standard discs. Do not insert dirty, warped, poorly balanced, or cracked discs into the drive.

What Media to Use
Use the right media! Your PlexWriter drive's capabilities change depending on which type of compact disc you use. It currently supports these types:
CD-ROM: You can immediately play or read prerecorded discs, such as audio CDs and data discs.
CD-R: Recordable CD. You can record on these discs, but only once. You can play or read them repeatedly after they have been written.
CD-RW: High-speed ReWritable CD. These discs support recording and re-recording (up to 1,000 times). You can also play or read them.
To achieve the maximum rated CD-R writing speed you must use certified media; and to achieve the maximum rated CD-RW writing speed you must use high speed CD-RW media. See the list of recommended media on page 27 for a list of approved media at the time this manual was printed, and see the Plextor web site at http://www.plextor.com updated list.
for an
You can write to high speed CD-RW discs only on drives that support this new media. Drives that are capable of writing to high speed CD-RW media, such as the PlexWriter 24/10/24U, are identified by a Compact Disc ReWritable High Speed logo.

Section 3. Using Your PlexWriter
Installing Device Drivers and Application Software
In Windows, your PlexWriter acts as a "CD-ROM Drive" for purposes of installation and setup. In some cases, you will need to install additional software to make use of all of the features of the PlexWriter.
Using the PlexWriter on a PC:
As CD-ROM: The computers operating system, whether it is Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows Me, supplies a generic USB device driver that allows the PlexWriter to function as a standard CD-ROM drive. You do nt need to install anything else. If you have W i ndows 98SE, you need to install a special USB driver. Youll find this driver on the Plextor Setup Disc, or you can get it from the Plextor web site at http://www.plextor.com. Support\Downloads\Drivers
As a CD-R or CD-RW device: In order to write to CD-R or CD-RW media, you will need additional software such as SimpliCD purchased a kit from Plextor, this software is supplied.
Using the PlexWriter on a Macintosh:
Whether using the PlexWriter as a standard CD-ROM or as a CD-R or CD-RW device, you will need additional drivers or software besides those that are part of the Macintosh operating system. You will need to purchase this software separately. The software compatibility list is available from Plextors web site at www.plextor.com
Before installing any software, check that the USB cable connection between your PlexWriter and the computer is correct, and the PlexWriter is recognized by your system.

Cleaning Discs
For proper read and write performance, your CD-R, CD-RW, and CD-ROM discs must be clean. Trying to record on a dirty disc may result in a failed session and ruin the disc.
To clean the disc, wipe the disc using a clean, soft cotton cloth to remove surface dirt such as fingerprints. Use a straight-line motion, wiping from the center out. Do not wipe the disc in a circular motion.

Creating a Data CD
A common use for Easy CD Creator is to make a data CD. This lets you archive projects and save information such as interactive training materials, important documents and research data that can then be shared with other people.
To make a data CD:
1. On Easy CD Creators Select a Project window, roll your mouse over the Make a data CD button, then select Data CD project. You see the Data CD Project window.
Figure 10: Drag Files in the Data CD Project Window to Make a Data CD
2. In the top window, use the Select source files dropdown menu to navigate and select files from your C: drive or other drives.
3. Drag the files to the project area in the lower panel.
-orUse the Add button to add the files to the project area. The Project Size bar at the bottom of the screen indicates how much space you have used and how much is remaining on your CD or DVD. Easy CD Creator takes the files and directories that you select and adds them to your data CD project.

5. In the Data CD Project window, select the red Record button. Then click the Start Recording button to begin writing to the CD or DVD. When the burn process is done, you see a dialog box that indicates the project is complete.
Formatting a CD for Drag and Drop
Easy CD Creator 5 Basic includes DirectCD, which allows you to format a CD-R or CD-RW disc, then use Windows Explorer to drag and drop files to that formatted disc just as you do to a floppy disk.
NOTE
: Even with your very fast PlexWriter 24/10/24U, formatting a CD can take some time.
CD-RW media takes much longer to format than CD-R media.
To format a CD for use like a floppy disk:
Insert a blank CD-R disc or a CD-RW disc in your PlexWriter drive.
1. On Easy CD Creators Select a Project window, roll your mouse over the Make a data CD button, then select the DirectCD button. You see the DirectCD format window.
Figure 11: Use DirectCD to Format a CD for Windows Drag-and-Drop
2. Select the Format CD button to begin formatting. When the CD is ready, the CD Ready dialog box appears.
3. Click OK to close the dialog box. You may also want to close the DirectCD format window and the project selector at this point because formatting is completed.
22

Page 29
Section 4. Quick Guide to Roxio Application Software
4. Open Windows Explorer and see that the CD appears with a drive letter (like E: or F:) in the drive list.
5. Drag and drop files to the CD just as if it were a hard drive or a floppy disk. Simply select a file or folder and drag it over the drive letter.
NOTE
: DirectCD uses packet writing to write to the CD. This format is ideal for saving data to CDs but should not be used to create music CDs. Music CDs created with DirectCD will not be playable in CD players.
The packet writing (UDF) format requires the use of a UDF reader if the disc is to be read on a system that does not have DirectCD installed. This reader is available from Roxio (www.roxio.com
).
Making a Personal Backup Copy of a CD
You can use Easy CD Creator to make a backup copy of a CD for safekeeping. For example, you can copy audio or data CDs.
