This guide provides information about preparing your site for the
installation of Symphony or Avid Composer Products hardware used with
the Apple Dual 1-GHz PowerPC
By following these site preparation guidelines, you can help ensure a
successful installation and avoid delays in getting your system up and
running.
This guide contains the following sections:
• Site Planning (including environmental, electrical, size, and weight
considerations)
G4 Mini-Tower platform (G4 platform).
• System Planning
• Check List (a list of tasks pertinent to your setup)
This guide assumes you are installing an Avid system with a G4 platform,
with or without an Avid PCI Extender. The guide covers the preparation
required for installing the Avid Symphony, Avid Media Composer
Film Composer
®
, or Avid Xpress® system.

Site Planning
Site Planning
You need to be aware of environmental, electrical, size, and weight
requirements as you select the location for your system.
Be sure to meet the narrowest range of specifications in the following
tables. For example, the audio I/O device (888 I/O
environment of 50°F to 104°F (10°C to 40°C), but the Meridien
should only operate in an environment of 50°F to 95°F (10°C to 35°C).
Therefore, the temperature at your site should not drop below 50°F (10°C)
or rise above 95°F (35°C).
Environmental Requirements
In general, you should prepare a site that is clean and dust free. In addition:
• Select a location free from significant temperature or humidity
changes. A location with approximately 40 percent humidity can
prevent problems stemming from electrostatic discharge.
• Make sure your location is sturdy, level, and not subject to
vibration.
• Make sure the location is away from high-traffic or high-noise areas.
• Select a location where there is adequate space in front of and behind
the system components. You must be able to connect cables and
service the parts of your system; they also need adequate airflow for
cooling.

Electrical Requirements
Select your site with these electrical requirements in mind:
• Make sure there is adequate power for each system component. This
prevents the need for extension cords.
• Make sure your site is away from major electrical equipment such as
motors, air conditioners, or elevators.
• Make sure the location is not subject to static electrical buildup.
• Plug only your Avid equipment into the power strip. Do not plug in
coffee makers, radios, lights, or other non-Avid devices. Avid
recommends the use of an uninterruptible power supply (UPS)
appropriately sized for your system configuration. The UPS
provides system protection against sudden power surges or losses that
could cause you to lose your work.
In addition, make sure your site meets the electrical specifications in
Table 2 .

System Planning
This section discusses your system setup. It presents information on
clearance and the access you need to install and service your system. It also
discusses system components and physical layout.
Clearance and Access
Install the system in a location that provides at least 12 inches (30.5 cm) of
air clearance in front of and behind the system. Maintain 1 to 2 inches
(2.5 to 5.1 cm) of clearance between components. Remember to provide
additional space for connecting or disconnecting cables and changing
internal drives, boards, and components. Allow 3 feet (0.9 meters) all
around the system for servicing.
Place your system on recessed shelves or cabinets with rollers so you can
pull out and access the components easily. Avoid installing the system in
tight, fixed spaces. You should also provide telephone line access for
modem use and technical support.

Installing Equipment in a Rack
Some parts of Avid systems (for example, a MediaDock LVD) can be
installed in a rack. When you install equipment in a rack you must take the
following precautions:
• Elevated Operating Ambient Temperature — When installed in a
closed or multiunit rack assembly, the operating ambient temperature
of the rack environment might be greater than the room ambient
temperature. Therefore, consideration should be given to installing the
equipment compatible with the manufacturer's maximum ambient
temperature.
• Reduced Airflow — Installation of the equipment in a rack should be
such that the amount of airflow required for safe operation of the
equipment is not compromised.
• Mechanical Loading — Mounting of the equipment in a rack should
be such that the amount of airflow required for safe operation of the
equipment is not compromised.
• Circuit Overloading —Consideration should be given to the
connection of the equipment to the supply circuit and the effect that
overloading of circuits might have on overcurrent protection and
supply wiring. Appropriate consideration of equipment nameplate
ratings should be used when addressing this concern.

• Reliable Earthing — Reliable earthing of rack-mounted equipment
should be maintained. Particular attention should be given to supply
connections other than direct connections to the branch circuit (for
example, the use of power strips).

Media Composer system with additional peripheral components.

If your equipment configuration requires running long cables (to install
components in different rooms, for example), install these cables before
the Avid equipment arrives.
Provide telephone access to allow a direct dial-in line for the client modem
and easy access to Avid Customer Support. A telephone line for each client
is recommended.
Verify that your site meets the environmental and power requirements
described in “Site Planning” on page 13. Be sure air conditioning is
provided to the system and its components.

Make note of all the network IP addresses. Check the TCP/IP Control
Panel for the IP address. IP addresses are supplied by your network
administrator.
