Note:
The thermal values are based on temperatures read from a thermometer inserted into the thermometer well of the
Reacti-Block™ Aluminum Block. The thermal values may vary slightly as a result of variable load and aluminum block
size. Block weight will vary with the size and number of holes drilled into each block.

Set-up
Before You Begin:
and immediately file a claim if shipping damage is observed. Do not discard packaging material.
Examine carton and Reacti-Therm™ Heating Module for damage before use. Call the delivery carrier
Inspect the condition of the unit before use. Place the instrument in an area free of drafts and heating devices for the most
uniform temperature control of samples. Inefficient or uneven heating may result if the Reacti-Therm™ Heating Module is
placed in a fume hood with a high blower speed. Place a clean Reacti-Block™ Aluminum Block into the well. Place a 35 mm
immersion depth thermometer with a range above 165°C into the thermometer well of the aluminum block.
Start Up:
the power switch to the "on" position. Turn the temperature control knob clockwise to raise the temperature;
counterclockwise to lower the temperature. Adjust the temperature control knob so that the thermometer temperature in the
block will read 100°C when equilibrated. The heat indicator light comes on when the instrument is heating, and the light
flickers as the temperature approaches 100°C. Allow 30 minutes for the temperature to stabilize after the indicator light
begins flickering. This procedure allows you to verify that your Reacti-Therm™ Heating Module is heating properly.
With the power switch in the "off" position, plug the three-prong plug of the power cord into a 120 volt outlet. Flip
Instructions for Use
1.Place the Reacti-Therm™ Heating Module in a thermally stable environment. Avoid locating the instrument near air
vents or heating equipment.
2.Place a Reacti-Block™ Aluminum Block into the heating well of the Reacti-Therm™ Heating Module. The well and the
block should be free of debris and contamination to facilitate even and efficient heating.
3.With the power switch in the "off" position, plug the three-prong plug into a 120 volt outlet.
4.Flip the power switch to the "on" position and turn the temperature control knob clockwise to raise the temperature;
counterclockwise to lower it.

5.Allow at least 30 minutes for the temperature of the Reacti-Therm™ Heating Module to equilibrate. Actual times
required for the unit to reach equilibrium for a given temperature may vary depending on the block used, room
temperature, etc.
6.Place vials or test tubes containing samples in the heating block.
7.An inert atmosphere can be maintained over samples by using the Reacti-Vap™ Evaporator manifold system, which
provides a flow of an inert gas over samples. See your Pierce Catalog and Handbook for more information.
Safety Tips
1.Allow the unit to cool before cleaning. Unplug the instrument from the 120 volt outlet and remove the heating block
from the well. Keep the block and well clean for future use. To extend the life of the unit, flip the power switch to "off"
when the unit is not in use.
2.The well is not designed to retain liquids. If spillage occurs, liquid should be removed from the well immediately to
prevent damage to electrical components and prevent any possible fire hazard.
3.There is a set of fuses in the power entry module. These will blow if high amperage is applied to the circuit. These fuses
will need to be replaced. If this occurs, an inspection should be made by a qualified service person.
4.Corrosive atmospheres should be avoided to prolong the life of the instrument.
Service and Maintenance
The Reacti-Therm™ Heating Module is relatively service-free. If your module should need maintenance or a replacement
part, contact Pierce. Always disconnect the power plug from the 120 volt outlet before attempting any kind of external
cleaning. Only cleaners that will not harm ferrous or aluminum metal should be used to clean this unit.
Reacti-Therm™ Heating Module Calibration
Equipment Needed:
1 flat-bladed 3 mm tip, 4 1/2” shaft screwdriver
1 Thermometer (Pierce Product No. 18911), Range 0-200°C, 1°C graduations, 225 mm length, immersion depth 35 mm
By adjusting a high trimpot and low trimpot, the temperature of the heating block can be adjusted for the high and low
settings of the heat control knob. Access to the trimpots is through the holes on the right-hand side of the Reacti-Therm™
Heating Module case. Adjusting the trimpots clockwise lowers the temperature and adjusting them counterclockwise
increases the temperature. Allow the temperature of the heating block to equilibrate for 45 minutes after the unit is turned on
and following each additional adjustment.
