Introduction
With this apparatus, you can enjoy music from audio discs, tapes, external devices, and listen to radio stations.
The apparatus offers you multiple sound effect settings that enrich sound with Digital Sound Control (DSC) and Dynamic Bass Boost (DBB).
When you activate record from disc to tape, this apparatus starts disc play automatically.

Caution

Connect power

Always follow the instructions in this chapter in sequence.
If you contact Philips, you will be asked for the model and serial number of this apparatus. The model number and serial number are on the back of the apparatus. Write the numbers here:

Connect speakers
Note
Ensure that the colors of the speaker wires and terminals are matched.
1 Hold down the socket flap. 2 Insert the stripped part of the wire
completely.
Inser t the right speaker wires to “ R”, left speaker wires to “L”.
Inser t the red/blue wires to “ +”, black wires to “-”.
3 Release the socket flap.
Caution
Risk of product damage! Ensure that the power supply voltage corresponds to the voltage printed on the back or the underside of the apparatus. Risk of electric shock! When you unplug the AC power cord, always pull the plug from the socket. Never pull the cord. Before connecting the AC power cord, ensure you have completed all other connections.
1 Connect the power adapter to
the DC IN jack on the rear of the main unit

Install remote control batteries
Caution
Risk of explosion! Keep batteries away from heat, sunshine or fire. Never discard batteries in fire. Risk of decreased battery life! Never mix different brands or types of batteries. Risk of product damage! When the remote control is not used for long periods, remove the batteries.
1 Open the battery compartment. 2 Insert 2 UM-4 AAA batteries with
correct polarity (+/-) as indicated.

3 Close the battery compartment.
Set clock
In standby mode, press and hold CLOCK

on the main unit to activate the clock setting mode.
[SET CLOCK] (set clock) is displayed » briefly. Then the hour digits are displayed and begin to blink.
Note
In Eco Power Standby mode, press CLOCK to show clock first, then press and hold CLOCK to proceed clock setting.
2 Press on the main unit repeatedly to
select 12 hour or 24 hour format.
3 Turn VOLUME+/- to set the hour. 4 Press CLOCK to confirm.
The minute digits are displayed and » begin to blink.
5 Turn VOLUME+/- to set the minute. 6 Press CLOCK to confirm.
Switch to standby
1 Press to switch the apparatus to
standby mode.
The backlight on the display panel is » reduced.
The clock (if set) appears on the » display panel.
To switch the apparatus to Eco Power Standby mode:
1 In standby mode, press and hold for
more than 2 seconds.
The backlight on the display panel » turns off.
Note
If no button is pressed over 15 minutes in Standby mode, the unit goes to Eco Power Standby mode automatically and the backlight on the display turns off.
Turn on
Press STANDBY-ON on the main unit.

5 Play options
Repeat and random play
Press REPEAT/SHUFFLE repeatedly to

select:
[REP] (repeat): the current track is played repeatedly.
[REP ALL] (repeat all): all tracks are played repeatedly.
[SHUF] (shuffle): all tracks are played randomly.
[SHUF REP ALL] (repeat all randomly): all tracks are played repeatedly in random order.
2 To return to normal play, press REPEAT/
SHUFFLE repeatedly until play mode is
no longer displayed.
Program tracks
You can program a maximum of 20 tracks.
1 In CD/USB mode, at the stop position,
press PROG to activate the program mode.
[PROG] (program) blinks on the » display.
2 For MP3/WMA tracks, press to select
an album.
3 Press / to select a track number,
then press PROG to confirm.
4 Repeat steps 2 to 3 to program more
tracks.
5 Press to play the programmed tracks.

For optimal reception, fully extend and adjus t the position of the FM antenna.
1 Press TUNER to select the tuner source. 2 Press and hold / for more than 2
seconds.
[SEARCH] (search) is displayed. » The radio tunes to a station with »
strong reception automatically.
3 Repeat step 2 to tune to more stations.
To tune to a weak station, press • / repeatedly until you find optimal reception.
Program radio stations automatically
Note
You can program a maximum of 20 FM radio stations and 10 MW radio s tations.

Note
To record, use only “Normal” (IEC type I) tapes on which the write-protec t notches (tabs) are not broken.
Tip
When you play or record a tape, the sound source cannot be changed. The best recording level is set automatically. Change of volume and sound effect does not affect recording.
Note
The quality of recorded sound can differ depending on the source and the tape used.

Clean the cabinet
Use a soft cloth slightly moistened with • a mild detergent solution. Do not use a solution containing alcohol, spirits, ammonia or abrasives.
Clean discs
When a disc becomes dirty, clean it with • a cleaning cloth. Wipe the disc from the centre out.
Do not use solvents such as benzene, • thinner, commercially available cleaners, or antistatic spray intended for analogue records.
Clean the disc lens
After prolonged use, dir t or dust may • accumulate at the disc lens. To ensure good play quality, clean the disc lens with Philips CD lens cleaner or any commercially available cleaner. Follow the instructions supplied with cleaner.
Clean the heads and the tape paths
To ensure good recording and play • quality, clean the heads A, the capstan(s) B, and pressure roller(s) C after every 50 hours of tape operation.

Use a cotton swab slightly moistened • with cleaning fluid or alcohol.
You can also clean the heads by playing a • cleaning tape once.
Demagnetise the heads
Use a demagnetising tape available at • your dealer.

11 Troubleshooting
Caution
Never remove the casing of this apparatus.
To keep the warranty valid, never try to repair the system yourself. If you encounter problems when using this apparatus, check the following points before requesting service. If the problem remains unsolved, go to the Philips web site (www. Philips.com/support). When you contact Philips, ensure that your apparatus is nearby and the model number and serial number are available.
No power
Ensure that the AC power plug of the unit is connected properly. Ensure that there is power at the AC outlet. To save power, the system switches off automatically 15 minutes after track play reaches the end and no control is operated.
No sound or poor sound
Adjust the volume. Check that the speakers are connected correctly. Check if the stripped speaker wires are clamped.
Left and right sound outputs reversed
Check the speaker connections and location.
No response from the unit
Disconnect and reconnect the AC power plug, then turn on the system again. As a power-saving feature, the unit switches off automatically 15 minutes after track play reaches the end and no control is operated.
Cannot record/play tape
Clean deck parts. Use only NORMAL tape. Apply a piece of adhesive tape over the missing tab space.
Remote control does not work
Before you press any function button, first select the correct source with the remote control instead of the main unit. Reduce the distance between the remote control and the unit. Inser t the battery with its polarities (+/– signs) aligned as indicated. Replace the battery. Aim the remote control directly at the sensor on the front of the unit.
USB device not supported
The USB device is incompatible with the apparatus. Try another one.
No disc detected
Insert a disc. Check if the disc is inserted upside down. Wait until the moisture condensation at the lens has cleared. Replace or clean the disc. Use a finalized CD or correct format disc.
Poor radio reception
Increase the distance between the unit and your TV or VCR. Fully extend the FM antenna. Connect an outdoor FM antenna instead.
Timer does not work
Set the clock correctly. Switch on the timer.
Clock/timer setting erased
Power has been interrupted or the power plug has been disconnected. Reset the clock/timer.
