Your telephone’s operating capacity

Your telephone works from a battery located inside the handset.

•

Battery charging starts as soon as you place the handset on its base. A completely discharged handset will take about 24 hours to charge.

•

With a fully charged new battery, your handset will be able to operate for about 8 hours on-line and about 8 days on stand-by (in other words when not communicating).

•

To recharge your telephone, the base must be connected to a power supply. Only use the mains adaptor supplied with your phone.

Note:

You can place your handset on the base station with the keypad face up or face down.

Protecting your telephone

Fraudulent use of your telephone line by another cordless phone is unlikely as the base station assigns the handset one of a possible 65,535 identification codes.

This code means that only your handset is authorised to use your line for making calls.

In the event of a power failure

In the event of a power failure, your Icana 5350 cordless telephone will lose:

•

the Redial memory.

•

any unconfirmed number in course of memorisation.

But will save:

•

the numbers in your phonebook.

•

the caller list.

Helpful hint

To ensure maximum handset charge, replace the handset on the base station regularly.

Setting up your Icana 5350

1 On the top side of the base station, connect

the telephone cable to the smaller of the sockets and then to the telephone socket in the wall.

2 Connect the power supply cable to the larger

of the sockets on the base station and then to the power outlet.

The indicator light on the base station lights up. Your telephone is now correctly connected.

3 Fully extend the base station antenna.

4 Place the handset on its base station and

leave it to charge for at least 15 minutes.

Your telephone is now ready to make or receive calls in “Tone dialling” mode*.

To charge the battery completely, leave the handset on its base station for 24 hours.

Changing the dial mode

Your telephone has two possible dial modes: "tone" or "pulse". The factory setting for your telephone is "tone"*. If you are not connected to an electronic central exchange, you need to use "pulse".

To set the dial mode from “tone” to “pulse”:

1 Pick up the handset and press

®.

The indicator light on handset and base station starts flashing.

2 Press the

key.

3 Press the

key.

Your handset emits 3 beeps to confirm. The telephone is now ready to dial in "pulse" mode.

To set the dial mode from "pulse" to "tone":

1 Pick up the handset and press

®.

The indicator light on handset and base station starts flashing.

2 Press the

key.

3 Press the

key.

Your handset emits 3 beeps to confirm. The telephone is now ready to dial in "tone" mode.

When your telephone line is connected to an electronic exchange, the "tone" mode provides faster dialling, and access to special telephone network services.

Loop Disconnect Signalling:

Although this equipment can use either loop disconnect or DTMF signalling (Tone dialling), only the performance of the DTMF signalling (Tone dialling) is subject to regulatory requirements for correct operation.

It is therefore strongly recommended that this equipment is set to use DTMF signalling (Tone dialling) for access to public or private emergency services. DTMF signalling (Tone dialling) also provides faster call set up.

Your Icana 5350 cordless telephone incorporates advanced Philips cordless technology for even greater simplicity and user-friendliness.

Your Icana 5350 is fitted with a multi-channel radio system, which allows you to avoid interference during calls using the D2NS system (Dual Dynamic Noise Suppressor) to eliminate hiss.

Your Icana 5350 is fitted with a liquid crystal display screen on the handset, giving you all the features of a real

phonebook - 25 names and telephone numbers. You can also identify the telephone number of the caller (Caller ID)* and consult the Caller ID list*. Lastly, you can see how long your calls last.

This instruction manual will help you discover your product’s features and get to know its wide range of functions.

SAFETY INFORMATION:

The only way to cut off the power supply to the telephone is to disconnect the power supply block from the mains outlet. Be sure that the mains outlet is located near the telephone and is easily accessible.

Important! This telephone must be used in conjunction with a remote-powered main telephone (not requiring electrical current).

on the product certifies its compliance with all applicable technical regulations, as of the date of authorisation, concerning user safety and electromagnetic interference according to directives 73/23/EEC, 89/336/ EEC and 93/68/EEC.

THIS EQUIPMENT IS NOT DESIGNED FOR MAKING EMERGENCY TELEPHONE CALLS WHEN THE POWER FAILS. ALTERNATIVE ARRANGEMENTS SHOULD BE MADE FOR ACCESS TO EMERGENCY SERVICES.

RINGER EQUIVALENCE NUMBER (REN):

Your Icana 5350 has a Ringer Equivalence Number (REN) of 1.0. To determine the maximum number of telephone that can be connected to your line, add together the individual RENs of all the apparatus you wish to connect. If this total exceeds four, one or all of your telephones may not ring correctly.

* Only if you have subscribed to this service provided by your local telephone company.

This product may be used legally in the country where the appropriate authority has given its specific authorisation. This authorisation appears on a label at the back of the base station.

Your telephone’s indicator lights

THE BASE STATION HAS 1 GREEN INDICATOR LIGHT:

•

Lit when the base station is powered up by the mains adaptor.

•

Flashes in the following cases:

– during a call (line busy).

•

Unlit when the base station is not powered up.

THE HANDSET HAS 1 GREEN INDICATOR LIGHT:

•

Lit when the handset is on-line.

•

Flashes in the following cases:

– when receiving a call. – while establishing a radio link for an outgoing call. – during a programming phase.

•

Unlit in all other cases.

The sounds your telephone makes

Your telephone makes the following sounds:

•

a unique ringing tone, if a call is incoming.

•

1 short beep, when you press a key.

•

1 long beep, when the radio link between the base station and the handset has been lost.

•

1 beep, when replacing the handset on the base station.

•

3 beeps, to confirm any programming changes you have made to your telephone.

•

5 beeps, to tell you that your handset needs to be recharged on its base station.

Recommendations and precautions

INSTALLATION

•

Take care not to install the base close to electrical appliances (heater, TV, domestic appliance, etc.) or metal supports (doors/windows, partitions, etc.), which could impair the quality of communication and restrict the range of your phone.

•

Do not install the base in a humid room or close to a strong source of heat.

SAFETY

•

Do not get the handset wet.

•

Do not open the telephone, as this could expose you to high voltages. Contact the customer support service for any repairs.

•

Avoid all contact between the battery and any conducting materials (keys, paper clips, rings, bracelets, etc.).

•

Avoid all contact between the charge terminals (base or handset) and any conducting materials (keys, paper clips, rings, bracelets, etc).

MAINTENANCE

•

Before cleaning your telephone, disconnect the power supply cable and the telephone cable. Use a cloth or chamois leather moistened with a light soapy water solution, then wipe off with a dry cloth. This will ensure that your telephone stays looking as good as new.

•

Never spray the phone with cleaning products or solvents.

•

We recommend periodically cleaning the charge terminals on the base and the handset with a dry, lint-free cloth.

These symbols tell you what is happening on your phone.

This line of the display shows up to 10 numbers or characters.

Your handset display

The display of your Icana 5350 has 6 symbols:

indicates that: – you are programming your phone.

indicates that: – you are consulting or modifying your phonebook.

indicates that: – you have the line (flashing) or a call is in progress (on).

indicates that:

– new calls have been stored in the caller list since your last consultation (on). – a network message is sent (flashing).

indicates that: – the base station loudspeaker is on.

indicates that:

– when on the base station, the handset is charging. – when out of the base station, the batteries are not charged enough (flashing).

Changing radio channels during a call

During a call, if the radio link is poor, you can change radio channels and possibly improve sound quality.

To change radio channels during a call:

Press the

key on the handset.

– If a new channel is found, the call will continue on this channel. – If another channel is not found, the call will continue on the initial channel.

Notes:

•

If you are too far from the base station when the radio channel changes, the call will be cut off.

•

When the radio channel changes during a call, your correspondent will hear a short succession of beeps.

1 To answer: pick up the handset, fully extend

the antenna, and press the key.

When the phone rings, the telephone number of the caller is displayed (if you subscribe to the caller identification service). Once the call is answered, the call timer is displayed.

2 To hang up: press the

key again, or just

replace the handset on the base station.

The display shows the call time for 5 seconds.

Answering a call

Redialling the last number dialled (Redial)

1 Pick up the handset. 2 Press the

key on the handset.

Wait for the tone.

3 Press the

key on the handset.

The last number dialled (maximum of 23 digits) is displayed and is automatically redialled.

Making a call

1 Pick up the handset and fully extend the

antenna. NOTE! The handset battery must be charged.

2 Press the

key on the handset.

The search for a free channel starts. The

symbol flashes. The base station and handset indicator lights flash.

As soon as the link is established, the

symbol and the handset indicator light stop flashing and remain lit. The indicator light on the base station continues flashing and you will hear the dial tone.

3 Dial the number you want.

The display shows the dialled number (for 5 seconds), then the call timer.

4 To hang up, press the

key on the handset, or just replace the handset on the base station.

The display shows the call time for 5 seconds.

Putting the call on the loudspeaker

Your Icana 5350 base station is equipped with a loudspeaker so that other people with you can listen to the conversation.

Saving a name and a number in the phonebook

With your Icana 5350, you can save in the phonebook 25 numbers and their associated names (up to 10 characters). This function allows you to automatically dial the numbers you use most often. To ensure correct operation, stay close to the base station during the programming phase. To store in the phonebook a telephone number and the associated name:

1 Press the phonebook

key on the handset.

The

symbol and the handset indicator light flash. The symbol remains lit when the radio link is established.

EMPTY is displayed if there is no entry in the phonebook.

2 Press the key.

NAME: is displayed.

3 Enter the name (up to 10 letters) using the handset keypad:

The letters of the alphabet are arranged in groups of three or four beside the numbers

to . Press the

key corresponding to the required letter or number 1,2, 3, 4, or 5 times.

– To validate the last character (letter or digit) typed, wait for 3 seconds or press another character. – To delete the last character typed, press the

key.

– To type a space between two letters, press the

key.

– To type “ – ”, press

twice.

1 During a call, press the

symbol and the handset indicator light are switched off. The

If your handset does not emit the 3 confirmation beeps, the phone number you have just stored has not been saved: start the procedure again from step

If the phonebook is full (i.e. 25 names and telephone numbers already stored in the phonebook), pressing the key (step ) will display the “FULL” message: the name and the telephone number are not saved.

Erasing a name and a number from the phonebook

1 Press the key on the handset.

The

symbol and the handset indicator light flash. The first name is displayed.

2 Press

or to scroll through the list and choose the name you want to erase.

3 When the name to be erased is displayed, press the

key.

ERASE is displayed for 2 seconds. The symbol and the handset indicator light are switched off. The

handset emits 3 confirmation beeps.

Note:

If the phonebook is empty, the “EMPTY” message is displayed during 2 seconds.

Calling a number in the phonebook

1 Press the key on the handset.

The

symbol and the handset indicator light flash. The first name is displayed.

2 Press

or to scroll through the list and choose your correspondent. If you want to

check the associated telephone number, press the key.

3 Press the

key.

The telephone number is automatically dialled.

Saving an emergency number - SOS function

With your Icana 5350, you can store an emergency number in the key. Move close to the base station and follow the procedure below. The SOS feature is only available if electric power is supplied to the base station and if the handset battery is charged. To ensure correct operation, stay close to the base station during the programming phase.

1 Press the key on the handset.

The

symbol is displayed and the handset indicator light flashes. The base station indicator light flashes and

NUMBER: is displayed.

2 Dial the number to be memorised (maximum 23 digits).

If this number contains an “area code”, insert a pause after this “area code” by pressing the

key on the

handset. The dialled number is displayed. If you insert a wrong number, you will have to start the procedure again.

3 Press the

key.

This key is now associated with the telephone number you just dialled. The

symbol and the handset

indicator light are switched off. The handset emits 3 confirmation beeps and displays RECORDED for 2 sec.

If you do not hear the 3 confirmation beeps, the number you just dialled has not been saved. Start the procedure again from step

Calling an emergency number - SOS function

1 Extend the handset antenna and press the key. 2 Press the

key on the handset.

You have the dial tone. The emergency number is displayed and dialled automatically.

3 Hang up by pressing the

key on the handset.

The display shows the call time for 5 seconds.

Identifying the caller

Your Icana 5350 is designed to store and display specific information provided to subscribers of local telephone company caller identification services.

When you subscribe to these services, your telephone company transmits the telephone number, the date, and the time of each received call. The LCD screen of your product immediately displays this information between the first and second ring, allowing you to identify the calling party. This information is stored in the caller list, that you can consult.

Your Icana 5350 can store up to 25 telephone numbers in this caller list. If 25 calls are already stored and a new call comes in, the oldest caller identification is deleted and the new caller identification is recorded.

Consulting the caller list

To consult the caller list, proceed as follows:

1 Press the

key on the handset to access the caller list.

The

symbol flashes while the radio link is made. Once the radio link is established, the caller identification

of the latest call is displayed and the

symbol stops flashing. If no caller identification is stored,

UNAVAILABLE is displayed.

2 Press

or to scroll through the telephone numbers in the caller list.

You will hear the dial tone. The emergency number is displayed and is dialled automatically.

3 Press the key to display the date and the time of a call.

ATTENTION

THE CALLER LIST MAY NOT BE EMPTY AT THE FIRST TIME. PLEASE CLEAR UP BEFORE USE.

4 Press the key again to display the number of calls received by this person (in this

case, the date and the time of the last call are taken into account).

5 To exit the caller list, press the

key.

Note:

•

After consulting, the symbol is switched off, even if all the telephone numbers have not been consulted.

•

If you have not subscribed to your local telephone company’s caller identification service, the screen displays

NO ID.

•

If, for any reason, the telephone number of the caller is not available, or if the caller is outside the caller identification service area, the screen displays OUT.

If you want to store in your phonehook a number from the caller list:

When you have selected this number during step , press the key on the handset. NAME: is displayed. Enter the name (up to 10 letters) that is to be associated with this number. Press the

key again. RECORD is

displayed for 2 seconds. The handset emits 3 confirmation beeps.

If you want to erase a number from the caller list:

When you have selected the number to be erased during step , press the key on the handset. ERASE is displayed for 2 seconds. The handset emits 3 confirmation beeps.

Dialling from the caller list

When you consult the list of the last 25 calls received, you can call one of the 25 correspondents by selecting the number with

and , then press the key.

Note:

You may wish to add a number (maximum of 10 digits) before trying to call a number in the caller list. To do this, follow the procedure in step

1 Press key

or to select the telephone number of your correspondent.

2 If you wish to add a number to this telephone number, press the key

then enter the digits (up to ten). The figures will be automatically placed before the telephone number of your correspondent.

3 Press the

key.

The displayed number is dialled automatically, then the duration of call is displayed.

Switching the battery saver on or off

This function allows you to reduce the handset’s battery consumption and therefore increase its capacity when you are not making calls. However, once you have chosen the battery saver function:

•

the handset does not ring when off the base station.

•

SAVE BATT is displayed when the handset is not on the base station.

•

the icon is not displayed for incoming calls.

Note:

If the battery saver is switched on:

– The base station will ring when an incoming call is received. – To answer the cal on the handset, press the

key.

To switch the battery saver on:

1 Pick up the handset and press the

key.

The

symbol and the handset indicator light flash then the symbol remains lit once the call is received.

PROGRAM is displayed.

2 Press the

key on the handset.

TEL SETUP is displayed.

3 Press the

key on the handset.

SAVEBATT Y is displayed. The handset emits 3 confirmation beeps.

To switch the battery saver off:

1 Pick up the handset and press the

key.

The

symbol and the handset indicator light flash then the symbol remains lit once the call is received.

PROGRAM is displayed.

2 Press the

key on the handset.

TEL SETUP is displayed.

3 Press the

key on the handset.

SAVEBATT N is displayed. The handset emits 3 confirmation beeps.

Changing the handset battery

Contact your local Philips dealer to obtain a new battery.

1 On the back of the handset, lift the battery

compartment cover using the opening at the

top of the cover. 2 Carefully disconnect and remove the battery. 3 Insert the new battery: place the bottom of

the battery against the compartment catches,

then push the battery down into position.

Connect the battery. 4 Replace the battery compartment cover: hook

the cover into the slot of the handset, then

push down to close. 5 Replace the handset on the base station to

charge the new battery.

Maximum capacity will be reached in about 24 hours

charging.

Note:

When your battery is not charged enough to ensure correct operation, your handset emits 5 warning beeps. In this case, place the handset on the base station to recharge the battery.

Your rechargeable batteries contains cadmium. Check your local regulations for special disposal instructions.

Problem

The indicator light on the base station does not light up.

The charge indicator sound on the handset is not heard.

The line indicator light on the handset remains lit even when a call is not in progress.

There is no dialling tone.

The handset remains at last 15 minutes on base station and there is no dialling tone.

There is interference during calls.

The call was cut off suddenly or there is interference and hissing.

Likely cause

The base station is not connected properly.

•

The charging contacts are not touching.

•

There is dirt on the charging contacts.

The handset hasn’t been put down properly.

•

The base station is not connected properly to the telephone line.

•

The handset battery is discharged.

•

You are too far from the base station.

Worn out battery.

•

You are too far from the base station.

•

You are near other electric devices.

•

The base station and handset antennas are not extended enough.

•

The base station is near metal surfaces of electrical apparatus.

•

You have moved beyond the operating range or the handset battery is discharged.

Solution

•

Check the connections.

•

Lift up the handset then put it back on the base station.

•

Clean the charging contacts with a clean cloth or pencil eraser.

Press the

key and replace

the handset on the base station.

•

Check the connections.

•

Place the handset on the base station and wait for at least 15 minutes.

•

Move closer to the base station.

Contact your Philips dealer to get a new battery.
