Important
Read this user manual carefully before you use the appliance and save it for future reference.
This appliance is not intended for use by persons
­(including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety. Children should be supervised to ensure that they
­do not play with the appliance. Use and store the appliance at a temperature
­between 5°C and 35°C. The appliance complies with the internationally
­approved IEC safety regulations and can be safely cleaned under the tap. (Fig. 1)
Be careful with hot water. Always check if the water is not too hot, to prevent your hands from getting burnt.
Remove the batteries if you are not going to use the
­appliance for a month or more.
Electromagnetic elds (EMF)
This Philips appliance complies with all standards
regarding electromagnetic elds (EMF). If handled
properly and according to the instructions in this user
manual, the appliance is safe to use based on scientic
evidence available today.
Preparing for use
The appliance runs on two R6 AA 1.5-volt batteries. We strongly advise you to use Philips LR6 alkaline batteries.
They supply sufcient energy for approx. 60 minutes of
shaving.
Inserting batteries
1 Unlock the cap of the battery compartment (Fig. 2).
2 Remove the cap of the battery
compartment. (Fig. 3)
3 Put two batteries in the battery
compartment (Fig. 4).
Make sure your hands and the appliance are dry when you insert the batteries.
Make sure the + and - poles of the batteries point

in the right direction
The appliance does not work if the batteries have been placed incorrectly.
4 Push the cap of the battery compartment back
onto the appliance.
5 Lock the cap of the battery compartment (Fig. 5).
Optimising the lifetime of the battery
To avoid damage due to battery leakage:
Remove the batteries if you are not going to use the
­appliance for a month or more. Do not leave empty batteries in the appliance.

Using the appliance
1 Remove the protection cap.
2 Switch on the shaver by pushing the on/off slide
upwards (Fig. 6).
3 Move the shaving heads quickly over your
skin, making both straight and circular movements. (Fig. 7)
Shaving on a dry face gives the best results. Your skin may need 2 or 3 weeks to get accustomed to the Philips shaving system.
4 Switch off the shaver by pushing the on/off slide
downwards.
5 Put the protection cap on the shaver every time
you have used it, to prevent damage (Fig. 8).
Cleaning
Regular cleaning guarantees better shaving performance. The easiest and most hygienic way to clean the appliance is to rinse the shaving unit and the hair chamber with hot water every time you have used the appliance.
Never rinse the shaver when the battery compartment is open. Always make sure the cap of the battery compartment is in place and properly locked before you start rinsing the shaver.
Be careful with hot water. Always check if the water is not too hot, to prevent your hands from getting burnt.
Every day: shaving unit and hair chamber
1 Switch off the shaver.
2 Remove the shaving unit. (Fig. 9)
3 Rinse the outside of the shaving unit under a hot
tap for some time (Fig. 10).
4 Rinse the inside of the shaving unit under a hot tap
for some time. (Fig. 11)
5 Rinse the hair chamber under a hot tap for some
time. (Fig. 12)
6 Put the shaving unit back onto the shaver and shake
off excess water.
Never dry the shaving unit with a towel or tissue, as this may damage the shaving heads.
Every six months: shaving heads
1 Switch off the shaver.
2 Remove the shaving unit (Fig. 9).
3 Turn the wheel anticlockwise (1) and remove the
retaining frame (2) (Fig. 13).
4 Remove the shaving heads from the shaving
unit. (Fig. 14)
5 Remove the guard from the cutter (Fig. 15).
6 Clean the cutters with the short-bristled side of
the brush. (Fig. 16)
Do not clean more than one cutter and guard at a time, since they are all matching sets. If you accidentally mix up the cutters and guards, it may take several weeks before optimal shaving performance is restored.
7 Brush the guard. (Fig. 17)
8 Put the shaving heads back into the shaving unit. Put
the retaining frame back into the shaving unit, press the wheel and turn it clockwise.
9 Put the shaving unit back onto the shaver.
Storage
Put the protection cap on the shaver to prevent
,
damage (Fig. 8).
Replacement
Replace the shaving heads every two years for optimal shaving results. Replace damaged or worn shaving heads with HQ64 Philips Double Action Super Lift & Cut Shaving Heads (HQ5715) or HQ54 Philips Double Action Lift & Cut Shaving Heads (HQ5710,5705).
1 Switch off the shaver.
2 Remove the shaving unit (Fig. 9).
3 Turn the wheel anticlockwise (1) and remove the
retaining frame (2) (Fig. 13).
4 Remove the shaving heads from the shaving unit
and replace them with new ones (Fig. 14).
5 Put the retaining frame back into the shaving unit,
press the wheel and turn it clockwise.
6 Put the shaving unit back onto the shaver.

Environment
Batteries contain substances that may pollute the
­environment. Remove the batteries when they are empty or when you discard the appliance. Do not throw away the batteries with the normal household
waste, but hand them in at an ofcial collection point.
