Cellesse SenseActive is the latest product in the Philips Cellesse range. Clinical tests show that the deep, pleasant massage produced by its new, improved massage system can help you reduce or prevent unattractive cellulite more effectively than ever before – comfortably and easier to use, too.
Cellesse SenseActive is the result of years of research by the Philips Personal Care Institute. Having investigated the causes of cellulite and tested all the various treatments available, we’ve now developed an effective way to give you the results on cellulite you’re looking for.
This booklet explains what causes cellulite and describes how Cellesse SenseActive can help you solve this typically feminine problem.
Important: Before you start to use the appliance, please take the time to read this booklet all the way through (especially the section headed Read carefully before using Cellesse SenseActive).

Cellulite is the name given to bumpy, pitted skin that arises when lumpy fat deposits situated just under the skin become visible. Because of its appearance, it’s often called “orange peel skin”.
Cellulite only affects certain parts of the body, particularly the hips, thighs and buttocks. In more advanced stages, cellulite can be uncomfortable, even painful, when the skin is touched or squeezed.
However, cellulite is a cosmetic problem, not a medical condition. It should not be confused with cellulitis, which is the inflammation of skin tissue, caused by a bacterial infection.
Cellulite is the result of two things: the mattress-like structure of women’s skin and the tendency to retain fluid in the body.
The natural mattress-like structure of women’s skin
Men and women have different skin structures. Women’s skin naturally has a mattress-like structure. Fat is deposited in ‘pockets’ that stand at right angles to the surface, giving a structure that resembles a mattress with springs. This mattress-like structure becomes clearly visible when the skin is squeezed. In men’s skin, by contrast, fat is deposited in ‘pockets’ that tend to run horizontally under the skin. As a result of their skin structure, all women run the risk of developing cellulite.
Do the Squeeze Test
You can easily see this skin structure for yourself. Just gently squeeze an area of your thigh with both hands: you’ll probably be able to see the mattress-like structure of the fat layer.
The lumpy structure of the skin becomes more clearly visible when you put on weight (when the fat tissue becomes saturated) and when the skin gets thinner as a result of the natural process of aging.

Fluid retention
This natural skin structure may become visible even when the skin is not squeezed. This bumpy appearance of the skin is called “cellulite”.
In most cases, the mattress-like structure becomes visible as a result of excess fluid in the fat layer. Women tend to retain more fluid than men, especially in their legs. Excess fluid may accumulate around the fat cells and cause the cellulite layer to swell. If this fluid retention is allowed to continue for months or even years, the fat deposits may thicken and harden. Eventually they’ll become hard lumps which can be seen on the surface of the skin even when it’s not squeezed.
When it reaches an advanced stage, cellulite may be painful when the skin is squeezed or touched. At that point, cellulite is more difficult to reverse. At earlier stages, however, its effects can be considerably reduced.
Do the Pinch Test
To find out if your skin is retaining fluid, pinch the skin of your thigh gently between two fingers. Carefully pull the skin upwards and try to ‘detach’ it from the underlying layers. If this hurts, especially when you squeeze it, you may have detected the first signs of fluid retention and the related swelling of the cellulite layer.

you do about it?
Once developed, cellulite won’t disappear or diminish on its own. On the contrary, it’s likely to increase. The only solution is to make the fight against cellulite part of your regular personal care routine and to begin treatment right away, before the problem gets worse.
The good news is that cellulite can be reduced. It will never disappear completely, however, and will return if you stop doing something about it. There are many ways of fighting cellulite: exercise, special creams and gels, diets, massage and even surgery. However, most of these methods generally solve only part of the problem.
Exercise, for instance, stimulates blood circulation but never stimulates specifically those body parts that are affected by cellulite. Creams and gels, on the other hand, can be applied to specific areas, but, as a rule, their effect is very superficial since they can’t penetrate down to the deeper layers of the skin where cellulite forms. The effect of diets is also negligible. They may help reduce the overall amount of fat in the body, but fat deposits in areas affected by cellulite tend to be very stubborn. What’s
more, the major problem is not excess fat but fluid retention. A number of nutrients (such as tea, coffee, alcohol and refined products, e.g., flour and sugar) are known to stimulate fluid retention, and although it’s hard to avoid these products altogether, it is advisable to limit your consumption of them as much as possible.

The cellulite massage system that’s been proven to work!
Philips has therefore specially developed the compact and convenient Cellesse SenseActive to fight cellulite in an even more effective and comfortable way. Cellesse SenseActive gets right down to the cellulite layer within the skin and can easily be used in the privacy of your own home.
Cellesse SenseActive massages the cellulite layer in your skin in an intensive, pleasant way. This massage mobilizes the excess fluid, which is then removed naturally by the body through the normal circulation and lymphatic drainage systems. The result is a reduction in the bumpiness of the cellulite layer and therefore a smoother skin.
Cellesse SenseActive has been specially developed for those parts of the body that are prone to cellulite (thighs, hips and buttocks). The appliance works through a massage system that’s been shown in tests to be highly effective – Vacumotion
TM
.
The 3-in-1 Vacumotion
TM
works by providing a continuous lifting and rolling movement, which massages the cellulite layer in an intensive and pleasurable way. The Vacumotion massage system consists of four rollers with a suction opening in between. Because the elements are electronically coordinated, the 3-in-1 action is integrated into a smooth, continuous massage.
When you move Philips Cellesse SenseActive over your skin, the massaging action creates a wave-like movement of the skin. The massage must always be carried out in the direction of the heart, i.e., upwards along the legs, in a series of adjacent, parallel strokes.
Cellesse SenseActive in action
Three actions in one – the effective way to reach the cellulite layer deep in the skin and remove the excess fluid that’s the main cause of cellulite.
1 Roll-up The front roller, made
of soft-touch material and with small raised pads, gently picks up the skin and guides it into the suction bell.
2 Suction The vacuum lifts the skin even more to form a fold,
enabling the massage to reach the cellulite layer effectively.
3 Massage Four rollers, working together, give the cellulite layer a
pleasurable and deep massage, removing the main cause of cellulite – the excess fluid surrounding the fat cells. The rear rollers then gently guide the skin away.
9
10
Sensor control and indicator light
To make the treatment as effective as possible, the Vacumotion system will only initiate its suction action if the Cellesse SenseActive is making proper contact with the skin. A special sensor ‘feels’ whether this is the case, and lights up a small indicator lamp on the front of the appliance to show that proper contact is made. That means you can always be sure that you’re using the Cellesse SenseActive correctly.
Intensity settings
You can determine the intensity of the massage yourself, using the continuously variable control. Remember that the massage should always be pleasurable. If you ever find it painful, reduce the intensity to a comfortable level.
Vacumotion Stop
Vacumotion Stop is a simple and safe way to interrupt or stop your treatment at any time. Press the Vacumotion Stop button, and the motor-driven rollers and the suction action will stop and you can lift the appliance off your skin without any effort. The Vacumotion Stop is always within reach, because there’s one on each side of the product.
11
Drawing up an effective program of treatment for best results
We recommend you use Cellesse SenseActive three times a week, each time spending 10 to 15 minutes on each leg. Clinical tests have shown that this type of regular treatment can visibly reduce cellulite and significantly smoothen the cellulite layer in the skin within one month. Naturally, results will vary from individual to individual, depending on how bad the cellulite is to start with and on the individual’s lifestyle.
Don’t stop the treatment! If you do, after a while the cellulite layer will start to swell again as a result of the natural tendency of women’s bodies to retain fluid. This means you’ll get the best results from Cellesse SenseActive if you use it regularly. We recommend you use it three times a week during the first two or three months. After this time you can reduce to a maintenance programm of, say, once a week or 5 minutes three times a week on each part of the body to be treated (depending on your personal preference and skin type). This should be enough to keep your fluid retention under control.

Before using Cellesse SenseActive After using Cellesse SenseActive
Proven effective in clinical tests
Although the undesirable consequences of cellulite are visible on the surface, its causes lie deep inside the skin. So, it’s important that a product that helps you in your fight against cellulite, is proven to be effective both outside and inside the skin. That’s why we asked independent experts at the University of Brussels to carry out two types of clinical tests on the effectiveness of Cellesse
SenseActive.
One type of test showed that Cellesse SenseActive, used only three times a week,
smoothens the cellulite layer inside the skin by up to 49% in just one month.
These tests used ultrasound scanning to measure the bumpiness of the cellulite layer-the cause of cellulite.
The results achieved by women using Cellesse SenseActive were compared with those of a control group of non-users.
But, the consequences of what happens inside, the visible cellulite is what women care about. So, additional tests showed that Cellesse SenseActive is also highly effective on the outside of the skin, producing visibly smoother skin.
The extensive tests, carried out by the University of Brussels, employed a technique known as fringe projection topography. This uses a computer to visualize the surface of the skin and measures the reduction of cellulite.

Read carefully before using
theCellesseSenseActive
Do not use Cellesse SenseActive on hypersensitive skin, problem skin or areas with skin ailments, irritated skin, varicose veins, scars, spots or wounds. Please consult your doctor before using Cellesse SenseActive if you’re pregnant or have a heart condition, diabetes or circulation problems.
Only use the appliance to massage the outside of your thighs, hips and buttocks. Don’t use it on any other parts of the body!
Side-effects during and after use
Since your skin may need to get used to this type of deep massage, we advise you to use a low intensity level to start with and not to massage for too long. After using Cellesse SenseActive, your skin may become slightly red and feel rather dry. Don’t worry: these are the normal side-effects of a massage as the blood circulation improves. They should soon disappear. If necessary, you can apply a body lotion or cream after using Cellesse SenseActive to moisturize the skin. If these effects do not disappear within 24 hours or if any other undesirable skin reaction occurs, stop using the appliance and consult your doctor.
Some people may experience a certain amount of discomfort while using Cellesse SenseActive due to heightened sensitivity of the skin. Skin sensitivity may vary during the menstrual cycle. It may also vary depending on the pressure exerted by the fluid in the fat layer, which may differ from individual to individual and from time to time. If you experience any heightened skin sensitivity, simply select a lower intensity until the skin has reached its normal level of sensitivity again.
If you are prone to bruising or have small red veins clearly visible, you should only use higher settings with care, especially during the first few weeks of use. Whenever necessary, you can always press the Vacumotion Stop button to immediately release the appliance from your skin.
For best results, the appliance should only be used as described on the following pages.

Skincare
Make sure your skin is clean, dry and free of grease or other skincare products when using the appliance. Do not apply any creams or lotions to the skin prior to the massage.
Of course, if you wish, you may apply a cream, lotion, talcum powder or other type of skincare product to your skin after using Cellesse SenseActive.
Preparing the appliance for use
Put the low-voltage appliance plug in the socket of Cellesse SenseActive.
Put the transformer plug in the wall socket.
Slide your hand under the hand-strap and hold the appliance by clasping your fingers around the back of Cellesse SenseActive (with your fingertips pointing

Intensity
Before starting, set the On/Off switch to the preferred setting. Higher settings will provide more suction power and therefore a more intensive massage.
We advise you to start the first treatment using Setting
1. Later, either during the first treatment or when your skin has become used to the appliance, you can gradually increase the intensity setting. If treatment becomes painful, decrease the intensity. The best results are achieved when you experience the massage as pleasurable. Since everyone’s skin is different, you will need to discover which intensity suits you best.
Treatment
Make sure that clothes or long hairs do not get caught between the rollers. Always tie back long hair before you start using the appliance. Treatment with Cellesse SenseActive must, above all, be comfortable. Try doing it sitting down, standing up or lying down.
Gently position the appliance on your skin, a little above the knee. Make sure the On/Off switch is pointing in the direction of the upper part of your body.
Wait until the indicator light at the front of the appliance comes on. This is the signal that Cellesse SenseActive is in proper contact with the skin and is ready for use. Always move the appliance in one direction only: moving upwards towards the heart.
Move the appliance slowly and gradually from a little above the knee to the upper part of your thigh. The Vacumotion massage system will lift the skin, massaging the cellulite layer
in an intensive, effective and pleasurable way.
The motor-driven rollers automatically produce the optimum speed, so that all you need to do is let your hand follow the movement of the appliance. A complete
stroke from just above the knee to the upper part of the thigh will take approximately five seconds.
Press the Vacumotion Stop button. The indicator light goes out and the Vacumotion action is temporarily switched off.
You can then lift the appliance off your skin without any effort. The Vacumotion Stop system is par ticularly convenient when you are using the appliance at the higher intensities.
Place Cellesse SenseActive back onto your skin right next to where you began the first stroke and start the next stroke. Repeat this procedure until
you have treated your entire thigh, exept the inside, with a series of slow, upward, adjacent strokes.

22

Ce ll e ss e Se n s e A c t iv e e n a c t i o n
