SENSEO® coee system
Make your coee moments truly special with SENSEO®. This unique
system combines the easy-to-use Philips SENSEO® coee machine
with the specially developed Douwe Egberts SENSEO® coee pods,
giving you a full, smooth coee with a delicious foam layer.
To ensure a smooth and full coee taste, you should keep
the following things in mind:
Clean cold water
Use clean cold water every day. If you have not used the coee machine
for one day, you have to ush it with clean cold water before you use it
again. To ush the machine, ll the water reservoir with clean cold water,
place a bowl or 2 cups under the coee spout and press the 2-cup
button a few times to brew hot water until the water reservoir is empty.
Fresh coee pods
Use the SENSEO® coee pods that have been specially developed by
Douwe Egberts for your SENSEO® coee machine for a full, round taste.
Clean machine
Clean and descale the Philips SENSEO® coee machine regularly.
For more information on why it is important to descale, when to
descale and how to descale or which descaler to use, visit our website
at www.philips.com/descale-senseo.
Important
Read this user manual carefully before you use
the machine and save it for future reference.
Danger
- Never immerse the machine in water or any
other liquid.
Warning
- Connect the machine to an earthed wall
socket.
- Check if the voltage indicated on the bottom
of the machine corresponds to the local mains
voltage before you connect the machine.
- This machine can be used by children
aged from 8 years and above and persons
with reduced physical, sensory or mental
capabilities or lack of experience and
knowledge if they have been given
supervision or instruction concerning use of
the machine in a safe way and understand the
hazards involved. Children shall not play with
the machine. Cleaning and user maintenance
shall not be made by children unless they are
8 years and above and supervised.
- Keep the machine and its cord out of the
reach of children aged less than 8 years.
- Do not use the machine if the plug, the
mains cord or the machine itself is damaged.
- If the mains cord is damaged, you must
have it replaced by Philips, a service centre
authorised by Philips or similarly qualied
persons in order to avoid a hazard.
Caution
- Always return the machine to a service
centre authorised by Philips for
examination or repair. Do not attempt to
repair the machine yourself, otherwise your
guarantee becomes invalid.
- After unpacking the machine, never put
your SENSEO® machine on its side. Always
keep it in upright position, also during
transport.
- Never put normal ground coee or use torn
pods in the SENSEO® machine,
as this causes it to become blocked.
- Do not use the machine in combination
with a transformer, as this could cause
hazardous situations.
- Always put the machine on a at and
stable surface.
- Do not place the appliance on a hotplate,
directly next to a hot oven, heater or similar

- Descale the machine at least every 3 months.
Not doing so may cause the machine to stop
working properly. In this case, repair is not
covered under your warranty.
- Never let the machine operate unattended.
- Do not use the machine at altitudes higher
than 2200 metres above sea level.
- Do not use the machine at a temperature
below 0°C. Water left in the machine may
freeze and cause damage.
- Never pour any other liquid than clean cold
water into the water reservoir.
- Never ush the machine or let it brew
coee when the spout is not in place.
- Flush the coee machine with fresh water
before you use it for the rst time (see
chapter ‘First use’). This causes the system
to ll with water, which is essential for the
machine to work properly.
- Do not use the SENSEO® machine in
combination with water softeners based on
sodium exchange.
- Philips strongly advises you to descale
this SENSEO® regularly. If the machine is
not descaled in time and according to the
procedure described in chapter ‘Descaling’,
this may lead to technical failures.
- Never interrupt the descaling process.
- Never use a descaling agent based on
mineral acids such as sulphuric acid,
hydrochloric acid, sulphamic acid and acetic
acid (e.g. vinegar). These descaling agents
may damage your SENSEO® coee machine.
- After unpacking the machine, never put your
SENSEO® machine on its side. Always keep
it in upright position, also during transport.
- The machine is intended for normal
household use only. It is not intended for

room that was not
frost-free.
Tips and instructions
Flush the machine before rst use and if the machine has not been
used for one day. After the ushing cycle (which only takes approx.
2 minutes), the machine is ready for brewing SENSEO® coee.
- Select the desired coee strength by turning the intensity switch.
By adapting the strength, you increase or decrease the amount of
coee in the cup (HD7833, HD7831).
- While the machine is heating up, you can select the number of cups
you want to brew. The machine brews the cup or cups immediately
after it has heated up.
A temporary vacuum has developed under the
lid. Switch o the coee machine. Pull up the
lever and wait 24 hours before you open the lid.
You may need to use some force. Always make
sure the pod holders are clean and the sieve is
not clogged to prevent vacuum.
Make sure the intensity switch on the front of the
machine is in the right setting. When you adjust
the switch, the volume in the cup is also adjusted
(HD7833, HD7831 only).
Check the pod holder. If the sieve is clogged, use
a washing-up brush to unclog the sieve. If you
cannot clean it properly with the washing-up
brush, put the pod holder in the machine and
descale the machine (see chapter CALC).
Descale the machine (see CALC).
This Philips SENSEO® coee machine features a new
brewing technology. Just before it starts brewing
your coee, the machine rst carefully doses a small
amount of hot water onto the pod. This pre-brewing
ensures that the coee gets time to bloom before
the water starts owing for actual brewing.
Make sure that you do not overll the water
reservoir. Check that you place the water reservoir
on the appliance correctly.
Check the pod holder. If the sieve is clogged, use
a washing-up brush to unclog the sieve. If you
cannot clean it properly with the washing-up
brush, put the pod holder in the machine and
descale the machine (see chapter CALC).
Make sure that the coee pod has been put
properly in the centre of the pod holder.
In all other cases, contact the Philips Consumer
Care Centre in your country.
Check if a used coee pod is sticking to the water
distribution disc. If this is the case, remove the
used pod.
Check if you used the correct pod holder.
Use 2 pods in combination with the deeper 2-cup
pod holder.
Make sure that the intensity switch is in the
position you want (HD7833, HD7831 only).
Make sure that you place the coee pod(s)
properly in the centre of the pod holder and
ensure the coee in the pod is evenly distributed.
If you prefer a more robust avour, SENSEO®
coee pods with a stronger blend are available.
Make sure that the intensity switch is in the
position you want (HD7833, HD7831 only).
If you prefer a milder avour, SENSEO® coee
pods with a milder blend are available.
Do not use cups that are too large, as they cause
the coee to get cold more quickly. Make sure
the cups have a capacity of at least 150ml.
Contact the Philips Consumer Care Centre in your
country.
- You can stop the brewing cycle at any time by pressing the same
button (1-cup button or 2-cup button) that you pressed to start
brewing coee.
Never use scouring pads, abrasive cleaning agents or aggressive liquids
such as petrol or acetone to clean the machine. All detachable parts ar
dishwasher-proof.
2x descaling, 2x rinsing
Descale the machine when the CALC light goes on. Use Senseo descaler
(HD7012, HD7011) only. The descaling procedure consists of a descaling
cycle and two ushing cycles. Use a used pod in the 1-cup pod holder
during the rst descaling cycle and use a new used pod in the 2-cup
pod holder in the second descaling cycle. Do not interrupt the descaling
cycle and do not switch o the machine before you have performed the
two ushing cycles. The CALC light continues ash until the descaling
procedure is completed correctly. For more information on why it is
important to descale, when to descale and how to descale or which
descaler to use, visit our website at www.philips.com/descale-senseo.
