SENSEO® coee system
Make your coee moments truly special with SENSEO®. This unique system combines the easy-to-use Philips SENSEO® coee machine with the specially developed Douwe Egberts SENSEO® coee pods, giving you a full, smooth coee with a delicious foam layer.
To ensure a smooth and full coee taste, you should keep the following things in mind:
Clean cold water
Use clean cold water every day. If you have not used the coee machine for one day, you have to ush it with clean cold water before you use it again. To ush the machine, ll the water reservoir with clean cold water, place a bowl or 2 cups under the coee spout and press the 2-cup button a few times to brew hot water until the water reservoir is empty.
Fresh coee pods
Use the SENSEO® coee pods that have been specially developed by Douwe Egberts for your SENSEO® coee machine for a full, round taste.
Clean machine
Clean and descale the Philips SENSEO® coee machine regularly. For more information on why it is important to descale, when to descale and how to descale or which descaler to use, visit our website at www.philips.com/descale-senseo.
Important
Read this user manual carefully before you use the machine and save it for future reference.
Danger
- Never immerse the machine in water or any other liquid.
Warning
- Connect the machine to an earthed wall socket.
- Check if the voltage indicated on the bottom of the machine corresponds to the local mains voltage before you connect the machine.
- This machine can be used by children aged from 8 years and above and persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or lack of experience and knowledge if they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the machine in a safe way and understand the hazards involved. Children shall not play with the machine. Cleaning and user maintenance shall not be made by children unless they are 8 years and above and supervised.
- Keep the machine and its cord out of the reach of children aged less than 8 years.
- Do not use the machine if the plug, the mains cord or the machine itself is damaged.
- If the mains cord is damaged, you must have it replaced by Philips, a service centre authorised by Philips or similarly qualied persons in order to avoid a hazard.
Caution
- Always return the machine to a service centre authorised by Philips for examination or repair. Do not attempt to repair the machine yourself, otherwise your guarantee becomes invalid.
- After unpacking the machine, never put your SENSEO® machine on its side. Always keep it in upright position, also during transport.
- Never put normal ground coee or use torn pods in the SENSEO® machine, as this causes it to become blocked.
- Do not use the machine in combination with a transformer, as this could cause hazardous situations.
- Always put the machine on a at and stable surface.
- Do not place the appliance on a hotplate, directly next to a hot oven, heater or similar source of heat.
- Descale the machine at least every 3 months. Not doing so may cause the machine to stop working properly. In this case, repair is not covered under your warranty.
- Never let the machine operate unattended.
- Do not use the machine at altitudes higher than 2200 metres above sea level.
- Do not use the machine at a temperature below 0°C. Water left in the machine may freeze and cause damage.
- Never pour any other liquid than clean cold water into the water reservoir.
- Never ush the machine or let it brew coee when the spout is not in place.
- Flush the coee machine with fresh water before you use it for the rst time (see chapter ‘First use’). This causes the system to ll with water, which is essential for the machine to work properly.
- Do not use the SENSEO® machine in combination with water softeners based on sodium exchange.
- Philips strongly advises you to descale this SENSEO® regularly. If the machine is not descaled in time and according to the procedure described in chapter ‘Descaling’, this may lead to technical failures.
- Never interrupt the descaling process.
- Never use a descaling agent based on mineral acids such as sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, sulphamic acid and acetic acid (e.g. vinegar). These descaling agents may damage your SENSEO® coee machine.
- After unpacking the machine, never put your SENSEO® machine on its side. Always keep it in upright position, also during transport.
- The machine is intended for normal
household use only. It is not intended for use in environments such as sta kitchens of shops, oces, farms or other work environments. Nor is it intended to be used by clients in hotels, motels, bed and breakfast and other residential environments.
Compliance with standards
- This Philips appliance complies with all applicable standards and regulations regarding exposure to electromagnetic elds.
- The energy consumption of this machine in o mode is less than 1 watt. This means that this machine complies with European Directive 2005/32/EC, which sets the ecological design requirements for energy-using products.
Frost-free storage
If you already used the coee machine and have therefore already ushed it with water, you may only use and store it in a frost-free place to prevent it from becoming damaged.

Troubleshooting
This chapter summarises the most common problems you could encounter with the machine. If you are unable to solve the problem with the information below, visit www.philips.com/support for a list of frequently asked questions or contact the Consumer Care Centre in your country.
Problem Solution
The CALC light ashes.
The CALC light lights up continuously after descaling.
Water continued to ow from the spout when I used the machine for the rst time.
The light ring around the on/o button continues to ash rapidly.
You have pressed the 1-cup button and the 2-cup button at the same time. This started the descaling cycle. If you did not intend to start the descaling cycle, simply press the on/o button to switch o the machine. If you did intend to start the descaling cycle, do not interrupt this cycle but let the appliance operate until the water reservoir is empty.
The descaling procedure has not been completed. Perform the descaling procedure as described in chapter CALC. Do not switch o the machine during descaling.
The machine was performing the ushing cycle. You have to place a bowl of 1.5 litres under the spout.
Make sure that there is enough water in the water reservoir and that the water reservoir is placed properly.
There is not enough water in the water reservoir (i.e. above the MIN level if you want to brew 1 cup).
Problem Solution
Check if the oat in the water reservoir is stuck. Empty the water reservoir and shake it a few times to release the oat. Clean the water reservoir with hot water and some washing-up liquid or in the dishwasher.
I cannot open the lid.
The coee machine produces less coee than before.
When I press the 1-cup or 2-cup button, the brewing briey stops and then continues again.
Water leaks from the machine.
I cannot close the lid properly.
The SENSEO® coee is not strong enough.
The SENSEO® coee is too strong.
The coee is not hot enough.
The machine has been stored in a room that was not frost-free.
Tips and instructions
Flush the machine before rst use and if the machine has not been used for one day. After the ushing cycle (which only takes approx. 2 minutes), the machine is ready for brewing SENSEO® coee.
- Select the desired coee strength by turning the intensity switch. By adapting the strength, you increase or decrease the amount of coee in the cup (HD7833, HD7831).
- While the machine is heating up, you can select the number of cups you want to brew. The machine brews the cup or cups immediately after it has heated up.
A temporary vacuum has developed under the lid. Switch o the coee machine. Pull up the lever and wait 24 hours before you open the lid. You may need to use some force. Always make sure the pod holders are clean and the sieve is not clogged to prevent vacuum.
Make sure the intensity switch on the front of the machine is in the right setting. When you adjust the switch, the volume in the cup is also adjusted (HD7833, HD7831 only).
Check the pod holder. If the sieve is clogged, use a washing-up brush to unclog the sieve. If you cannot clean it properly with the washing-up brush, put the pod holder in the machine and descale the machine (see chapter CALC).
Descale the machine (see CALC).
This Philips SENSEO® coee machine features a new brewing technology. Just before it starts brewing your coee, the machine rst carefully doses a small amount of hot water onto the pod. This pre-brewing ensures that the coee gets time to bloom before the water starts owing for actual brewing.
Make sure that you do not overll the water reservoir. Check that you place the water reservoir on the appliance correctly.
Check the pod holder. If the sieve is clogged, use a washing-up brush to unclog the sieve. If you cannot clean it properly with the washing-up brush, put the pod holder in the machine and descale the machine (see chapter CALC).
Make sure that the coee pod has been put properly in the centre of the pod holder.
In all other cases, contact the Philips Consumer Care Centre in your country.
Check if a used coee pod is sticking to the water distribution disc. If this is the case, remove the used pod.
Check if you used the correct pod holder. Use 2 pods in combination with the deeper 2-cup pod holder.
Make sure that the intensity switch is in the position you want (HD7833, HD7831 only).
Make sure that you place the coee pod(s) properly in the centre of the pod holder and ensure the coee in the pod is evenly distributed.
If you prefer a more robust avour, SENSEO® coee pods with a stronger blend are available.
Make sure that the intensity switch is in the position you want (HD7833, HD7831 only).
If you prefer a milder avour, SENSEO® coee pods with a milder blend are available.
Do not use cups that are too large, as they cause the coee to get cold more quickly. Make sure the cups have a capacity of at least 150ml.
Contact the Philips Consumer Care Centre in your country.
- You can stop the brewing cycle at any time by pressing the same
button (1-cup button or 2-cup button) that you pressed to start brewing coee.
Never use scouring pads, abrasive cleaning agents or aggressive liquids such as petrol or acetone to clean the machine. All detachable parts ar dishwasher-proof.
2x descaling, 2x rinsing
Descale the machine when the CALC light goes on. Use Senseo descaler (HD7012, HD7011) only. The descaling procedure consists of a descaling cycle and two ushing cycles. Use a used pod in the 1-cup pod holder during the rst descaling cycle and use a new used pod in the 2-cup pod holder in the second descaling cycle. Do not interrupt the descaling cycle and do not switch o the machine before you have performed the two ushing cycles. The CALC light continues ash until the descaling procedure is completed correctly. For more information on why it is important to descale, when to descale and how to descale or which descaler to use, visit our website at www.philips.com/descale-senseo.
