Fresh coffee pods

Use the specially developed SENSEO® coffee pods with your SENSEO® coffee machine for a full, round taste. SENSEO® coffee pods stay fresh longer when you store them in a storage container.

Clean cold water

Use clean cold water every day. If you have not used the coffee machine for one day, you have to flush it with clean cold water before you use it again.

A clean machine

Clean and descale the Philips SENSEO® coffee machine regularly. Remove used coffee pods after brewing. If a used pod has been left in the coffee machine and you have not used the machine for some time, flush the machine before you use it again. For more information on why it is important to descale, how to descale or which descaler to use, visit our website at www.philips.com/descalesenseo.

Fresh milk

To get the best results, we advise you to use cold semi-skimmed milk directly from the fridge. If there is still milk in the milk container after brewing, you can store the milk container in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

First use

Flushing the machine before first use

It is important that you flush the machine and milk spout before first use. After the flushing cycle (which only takes approx. 2 minutes), the machine is ready for brewing SENSEO® coffee.

Caution: Never interrupt the flushing cycle halfway. If you do, the system does not fill itself properly.

1Tilt the top of the water reservoir backwards and lift the water reservoir off the machine (Fig. 2).

2Fill the water reservoir to the MAX level with cold tap water (Fig. 3).

3Tilt the water reservoir and place the bottom back onto the machine (1). Then press the top of the water reservoir towards the machine (2) (Fig. 4).

4Slide the milk spout into the machine over the guiding rails on the coffee spout. The milk spout is attached properly when you hear a click (Fig. 5).

5Place a bowl with a capacity of at least 1 liter under the spout (Fig. 6).

6Make sure that a pod holder, without pod or pods, is in place (Fig. 7).

7Put the plug in an earthed wall socket.

8Press the on/off button. The button lights up to indicate that you have to flush the machine (Fig. 8).

9To start flushing, press any of the recipe buttons on the touch panel (Fig. 9).

10English

-During the flushing cycle, the system fills itself with water from the water reservoir and cold water comes out of the coffee spout and milk spout. During the flushing cycle, the machine produces more noise than during a regular brewing cycle (Fig. 10).

-When all the water in the water reservoir has been used up, the flushing cycle is finished and the machine switches off. You may notice some steam coming from the machine, this is normal.

10 When all the water in the water reservoir has been used up, the flushing cycle is finished and the machine switches off (Fig. 11).

11Empty the bowl.

12Fill the water reservoir with fresh tap water and place it back into the machine.

-The machine beeps three times to confirm and starts to brew a coffee recipe according to the new setting.

6The machine saves the setting automatically.

Cleaning the machine

Regular cleaning of your SENSEO® machine is important to ensure that the SENSEO® coffee always tastes optimally and to optimize the lifetime of the coffee machine.

English 13

Cleaning the milk spout and the milk container

For a reliable performance of the milk spout and consistently good frothing results, it is important to clean the milk spout, the milk tube and the milk container regularly and thoroughly. The milk spout can be disassembled completely, which allows you to remove all milk residues from it.

Note: If you do not plan to froth milk again straight away, rinse the milk spout and milk tube within 30 minutes after use. After the last use of the day, clean the milk spout and milk tube thoroughly.

Rinsing after every use

1Fill the milk container with clean water (Fig. 32).

2Place the lid on the milk container. Insert the connector of the milk tube into the milk spout (1). Insert the other end of the milk tube into the milk container through the opening in the lid (2) (Fig. 23).

3Place an empty cup under the spout (Fig. 33).

4Press the milk only button (Fig. 34).

5The machine rinses all milk residues from the milk spout and milk tube with clean hot water.

Cleaning after last use of the day

Clean the milk tube, milk spout and milk container in the dishwasher or in hot water with some washing-up liquid.

Note: Cleaning in the dishwasher is recommended.

1Pull the milk tube out of the milk spout (Fig. 29).

2To remove the milk spout from the machine, pull it towards you (Fig. 35).

3Remove the top part of the milk spout from the bottom part by pulling it firmly.

4Take out the frothing system (Fig. 37).

5Open the spring to separate the parts (Fig. 38).

6Remove the inside part of the frothing system by pulling it downwards (Fig. 39).

7Remove the small lid by pulling it upwards (Fig. 40).

8Clean the three disassembled parts of the milk spout in the dishwasher or with hot water and some washing-up liquid (Fig. 41).

Reassembling the milk spout

1Place the small lid back on the frothing system (Fig. 42).

2Place the inside part back into the frothing system (Fig. 43).

3Close the spring to lock the two parts together (Fig. 44).

4Place the frothing system in the bottom part of the milk spout (Fig. 45).

5Place the top part of the milk spout back onto the bottom part (Fig. 46).

Cleaning the machine and the coffee spout

1Always unplug the machine before you clean it.

2Clean the outside of the machine with a moist cloth.

3Remove the coffee spout (Fig. 47).

4Remove the top part of the coffee spout from the bottom part by pulling it firmly (Fig. 48).

5Clean the coffee spout, the pod holders, the drip tray, the cup tray and the water reservoir in hot water, if necessary with some washing-up liquid, or in the dishwasher (Fig. 50).

6To prevent clogging, clean the pod holders regularly with hot water, some washing-up liquid and a washing-up brush. If you have used the 2-cup pod holder to brew cappuccino or hot chocolate, make sure to clean it thoroughly immediately after use to remove any milk residues.

14 English

Note: To clean a pod holder even more effectively, place it in the machine during descaling.

7Clean the water distribution disc with a moist cloth. Be careful when you do this. Make sure that the rubber sealing ring does not get stuck under the edge of the water distribution disc. If it does, the coffee machine starts to leak (Fig. 49).

Descaling

When to descale

Descale the SENSEO® coffee machine when the CALC light lights up, but at least once every 3 months. There is no difference between soft-water and hard-water areas in this respect. Descaling takes about 1 hour. Do not interrupt the descaling process.

Why to descale

Scale builds up inside the machine during use. It is essential to descale the SENSEO® coffee machine at least every 3 months. Your reasons to descale:

-It prolongs the life of your SENSEO® coffee machine

-It ensures maximum cup volume

-It ensures maximum coffee temperature

-The machine produces less sound during brewing

-It prevents malfunctioning

If the descaling procedure is not performed correctly, scale residue remains behind in the machine. This causes scale to build up more quickly and may cause permanent and irreparable damage to the machine.

Use the correct descaler

Only citric acid-based descalers are suitable for descaling the SENSEO® machine. This type of descaler descales the machine without damaging it. For the correct amount, see under ‘Descaling procedure’ below. Each descaling mixture can be used only once. Use a new descaling mixture each time. We advise you to use the special SENSEO® Descaler (HD7012/HD7011). Read the instruction leaflet in the package. For more information on why it is important to descale, how to descale or which descaler to use, visit our website at www.philips.com/descale-senseo.

Descaling procedure

The CALC button lights up to indicate you have to descale your machine. The descaling procedure consists of a descaling cycle and 3 flushing cycles with fresh water to ensure all descaler residue is removed from the machine. Do not interrupt the descaling cycle and do not switch off the machine before you have performed the flushing cycles. The whole procedure takes approximately 60 minutes.

Note: Place the milk spout in the machine to ensure proper descaling.

1Place the 1-cup pod holder with a used coffee pod in the coffee machine. The used coffee pod serves as a filter and prevents the sieve in the pod holder from getting clogged with scale (Fig. 51).

2Close the lid and make sure it is properly locked.

3Mix the descaler powder with 1 liter of water in a measuring jug. Stir until the powder is completely dissolved (Fig. 52). Fill the water reservoir up to the MAX indication with the descaler mixture.

English 15

4Tilt the water reservoir and place the bottom back onto the machine (1). Then press the top of the water reservoir towards the machine (2) (Fig. 4).

5Press the on/off button. The on/off button flashes slowly while the water heats up. The machine is ready for descaling when the on/off button lights up continuously (Fig. 8).

6Put a bowl with a capacity of at least 1 liter under the spout to collect the descaling mixture (Fig. 6).

7The machine is ready for descaling when the on/off button and CALC button light up continuously. Press the CALC button until the machine beeps twice to start the descaling cycle (Fig. 53).

8When the descaling cycle is in progress, the descaling solution comes out of the machine at intervals. During the last 5 minutes, the descaling solution flows continuously.

Warning: Do not interrupt the descaling cycle.

9When all the descaling solution in the water reservoir has been used up after approximately 50 minutes, the on/off button flashes quickly and the CALC button flashes slowly.

10Empty the bowl and place it back under the spout.

11Remove the used coffee pod from the pod holder.

Flushing cycles

1Rinse the water reservoir and fill it with fresh water until the MAX indication. Place the water reservoir back into the machine.

2Press the CALC button to start the flushing cycle. The water flows continuously for approximately 5 minutes (Fig. 53).

3Wait until the machine has completed the flushing cycle. The on/off button flashes quickly and the CALC button flashes slowly.

4Empty the bowl and place it back under the spout.

5Repeat steps 1 to 4 twice to complete the flushing procedure. When the last flushing cycle is complete, the machine switches off automatically.

Frost-free storage

If the coffee machine has already been used and therefore has been flushed with water, it may only be used and stored in a frost-free place to prevent it from becoming damaged.
