9. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized or

grounding-type plug.A polarized plug has two blades with one wider than the other. 17. Tilt/Stability - All televisions must comply with recommended international global safety standards for tilt and stability properties of its cabinet design.

• Do not compromise these design standards by applying excessive pull force to the front, or top, of the cabinet which could ultimately overturn the product.

• Also, do not endanger yourself, or children, by placing electronic equipment/toys on the top of the cabinet. Such items could unsuspectingly fall from the top of the set and cause product damage and/or personal injury.

18. Wall or Ceiling Mounting - The appliance should be mounted to a wall or ceiling only as recommended by the manufacturer.

19. Power Lines - An outdoor antenna should be located away from power lines.

20. Outdoor Antenna Grounding - If an outside antenna is connected to the receiver, be sure the antenna system is grounded so as to provide some protection against voltage surges and built up static charges.

Section 810 of the National Electrical Code,ANSI/NFPA No. 70-1984, provides information with respect to proper grounding of the mast and supporting structure grounding of the lead-in wire to an antenna discharge unit, size of grounding connectors, location of antenna discharge unit, connection to grounding electrodes and requirements for the grounding electrode. See Figure below.

21. Object and Liquid Entry - Care should be taken so that objects do not fall and liquids are not spilled into the enclosure through openings.

22. Battery usage CAUTION - To prevent battery leakage that may result in bodily injury, property damage or damage to the unit:

• Install all batteries correctly, with + and - aligned as marked on the unit.

• Do not mix batteries (old and new or carbon and alkaline, etc.).

• Remove batteries when the unit is not used for a long time.

DVD Disc Menus

Some explanations in this manual describe the DVD Disc Menus, which vary among DVDs. DVD Disc Menus allow you to choose different playback features from those available on the DVD. If the DVD has a menu, access it by pressing DISC MENU on the remote control. Details are on page 22.

Player’s System Menu

Some instructions explain how to use the Player’s System Menu to set up features of the Player or the Disc.Access the Player’s System Menu by pressing SYSTEM MENU on the remote control. Details are on page 20. Even if a feature is set up in the System Menu, it will not be available if the current Disc does not include that feature.

Available Disc Features

Features described in this manual may not be available on every Disc. If the feature is not on the Disc, you cannot use the Player to make the feature available.An “X” will appear in the top left

corner of the TV screen if you try to access a feature that is not on the Disc.

Putting Batteries in the Remote Control

Remove the battery compartment lid on the back of the remote control by pressing in the tab, then lifting off the lid.

Place two AA batteries inside the battery compartment with their +and –ends aligned as indicated. Do not mix old and new

batteries or different types of batteries (standard, alkaline, etc.).

Replace the battery compartment lid.

Using the Remote Control

Always point the remote control directly at the remote sensor on the front of the Player, not the TV. Details are on page 18. Make sure there are no barriers between the remote control and the Player.

Region Codes

DVDs must be labeled for ALL regions or for Region 1 in order to play on this Player.You cannot play Discs that are labeled for other regions. Look for the symbols below on your DVDs. If these region symbols do not appear on your DVD, you cannot play the DVD in this Player.

The number inside the globe refers to a region of the world. Region 1 represents the United States of America, Canada, upper regions of North America, Bermuda, the U.S.Virgin Islands, and small regions near Australia. A Disc encoded in a specific region format can play only on DVD Players that have the same region code. So, if a Disc is labeled for Region 2, you cannot play that DVD on this Player (because it is a Region 1 Player).

Color Systems

Different color systems are available throughout the world. DVD makers record DVDs in a certain color system.The color system of the DVD may appear on the DVD or its case.The most common color systems are NTSC, which is used primarily in the United States, PAL, and SECAM. This Player is compatible with both the NTSC and PAL color systems. Follow the steps on page 37 to set the Player to NTSC or PAL. Choose a setting that matches the color system of your TV and your DVDs.

• If you are having trouble playing a certain Disc, remove the Disc and try a different one. Improperly formatted Discs will not play on this Player.

• This Player supports only the first session of multi-session Discs.

Helpful Hints

Playable Discs

This Player will play Digital Video Discs (DVDs),Video Compact Discs (VCDs), Super Video CDs,Audio CDs, and Super Audio CDs.This Player also will play MP3 files (music tracks compressed with MPEG Audio Layer 3 technology) recorded onto a Compact Disc Recordable (CD-R) or a Compact Disc Rewritable (CD-RW). Discs having the following logos should play on this Player. DVDs must also meet the Region Code and Color System requirements described below.

Cleaning Discs and the Player

● Clean Discs with a cleaning cloth, wiping from the center out in a

straight line. Do not wipe the Disc in a circular motion.

● Do not use solvents such as benzine, thinner, commercially-available

cleaners, or anti-static spray intended for analog discs.

● If the Player cannot read Discs correctly, use a commonly available

CD/DVD lens cleaner. Other cleaning methods may destroy the lens. Always keep the tray closed to avoid dust on the lens.

● The lens may cloud over if you suddenly move the Player from cold to

warm surroundings. Playing a Disc is not possible then. Leave the power on for about one hour with no Disc in the unit until playback is possible.

● To clean the Player’s cabinet, use a soft cloth slightly moistened with a

mild detergent solution. Do not use a solution containing alcohol, spirits, ammonia, or abrasives.

Determining the best possible connection...

Your existing equipment, especially your TV, will determine your connection possibilities. However, the following guidelines describe which options provide the best picture and sound quality.

Progressive Scan provides the best picture quality and flicker-free pictures. Your TV must be capable of accepting Progressive Scan. Details are on page 12.

Component Video provides excellent picture quality. Details are on page 11.

S-Video provides good picture quality. Details are on page 10.

Composite Video (a yellow Video jack) provides standard picture quality. Details are on page 9.

Your TV may have only an RF-style jack, usually labeled Antenna In or 75 ohm or RF In.You will need an RF modulator in order to view the Player’s materials at your TV. See your electronics retailer or contact Philips for details on RF modulator availability and operations.

Digital audio connections provide the clearest sound, but you must have a digital stereo. Connect either the COAXIAL or OPTICAL DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jack of the Player to your Stereo for the best sound quality. Details are on page 14. However, you cannot hear SACDs or MP3 files playing when you use the Digital Audio connections.

If you have a Multichannel Receiver, (which is connected to Front, Center, and Surround/Rear Speakers and a subwoofer) connect the Player’s MULTICHANNEL AUDIO OUT jacks to the corresponding IN jacks on the Receiver. Details are on page

15.

If digital connections or multichannel connections are not possible, connect the Player’s red and white (right and left) AUDIO OUT jacks to the Audio In jacks of your Stereo or TV. Details are on pages 9-13. If your TV has a single Audio In jack instead of separate left/right Audio In jacks, you will need a different audio cable than the one supplied.You need a “splitter” audio cable to go from the left/right AUDIO OUT jacks of the Player to the single Audio In jack on your TV. See an electronics retailer or contact Philips for details.

Before you begin...

● Refer to the manuals of your TV, Stereo, Receiver, or other equipment as necessary. Note the

style of jacks and connectors on the other equipment. Determine how to choose different Audio and Video In channels on your other equipment so you can see and hear the Player’s materials on the TV, Stereo, etc. Some equipment may let you choose the channels using a remote control or by adjusting a TV/VIDEO/AUXILIARY switch.

● Disconnect all equipment from the power outlets. Connect the equipment to the power outlets

only after you have finished hooking up everything. Never make or change connections with equipment connected to the power outlet.

Remember...

● If you are using the Component, Composite, or S-Video connection, set the

PROGRESSIVE/INTERLACE switch to INTERLACE. Otherwise, you will not have a picture.

● Connect the Player directly to the TV. For example, do not connect the Player to a VCR, then

connect the VCR to a TV.This type of connection may distort the picture and sound. Also, your VCR may have a copy protection system that may distort the picture or prevent playback of some Discs.

● Set the TV to the correct Video In channel. Such channels may be called AUX or AUXILIARY IN,

AUDIO/VIDEO or A/V IN, EXT1 or EXT2 or External In, etc. These channels are often near channel 00.Your TV or its remote control may have a Video or Auxiliary switch/button that allows you to choose the correct Video In channel. See your TV manual for details. Or, change TV channels until you see the Player’s blue screen saver on the TV.

● Set the Stereo or Receiver to the correct channel or “source” mode.

● Do not connect the Player’s AUDIO OUT jacks to the PHONO IN jack of your Stereo.

● You only need one audio connection and one video connection between the Player and your TV

and/or Stereo or Receiver. So, you might not use all the jacks on the Player.

● Set TV System (page 37), Digital output (page 40), and/or Analog output (page 41) accordingly.

● Set the PROGRESSIVE/INTERLACE switch on the back of the Player to PROGRESSIVE when

connecting the Player's Pr/Cr Pb/Cb Y (VIDEO OUT) jacks to a Progressive Scan TV.

● If you are using Progressive Scan, S-Video and Composite Video connections are not possible at

the same time.

16 Quick Disc Playback

• If the Disc is Locked by Access Control, you must enter the fourdigit code or unlock the Disc. Details are on pages 29-32.

• DVDs have a region code.Your Player will not play discs that have a region code different from the region code of your Player. The Player’s region code is 1 (one). Details are on page 7.

• Resume may not be available with all Discs.

• When playing MP3 files or SACDs, you will not have sound if you used the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jacks. See page 35 for details.

• If a Video CD will not play, make sure Playback Control is Off. Details are on page 36.

• If you have no picture and you did not use a Progressive Scan connection, set the PROGRESSIVE/INTERLACE switch on the rear of the Player to INTERLACE.

DVD AUDIO CD VIDEO CD

There are many playback features and options available on Discs.After familiarizing yourself with the Player and its remote control as described on pages 17-21, see pages 22 and following to try additional features.

Press STANDBY-ON to turn on the Player. The red Standby light will disappear from the front of the Player.

Turn on your TV. Set it to the correct Video In channel.

You should see the Player’s blue background screen on the TV.

Press OPEN/CLOSE / on the front of the Player to open the disc tray. Load your Disc in the tray, with the label facing

up and the shiny side facing down. If the Disc is two-sided, make sure the side you want to play is facing up.

Press OPEN/CLOSE / again to close the tray. Playback may begin automatically.

If playback does not start automatically, press PLAY 2.

Playback will stop at the end of the Title or after the last Track.

If DVD playback does not start automatically, a Disc menu may appear. If the Title or Chapter selections are numbered, press a Number button to select an item. Or, press 1 234 to select an item for playing, then press OK.

To stop playback at any time, press STOP C.

Resume

The Resume feature is available with the last five DVDs,Video CDs, and Super Video CDs you played. Pressing STOP C to stop playback sets up the Resume feature.The next time you start playing the Disc, play will resume at the same point at which you last stopped it. However, if you press STOP C twice to stop Disc playback, Resume will not be activated.The next time you start playing the Disc, play will start at the beginning of the Disc. If the Resume symbol (see below) appears on the TV screen when you reload a Disc, play will resume from the point at which you last stopped playback if you press PLAY 2 while the Resume symbol appears.

Use the System Menu Bars to operate features. Press SYSTEM MENU on the remote control repeatedly to select System Menu Bar 1, System Menu Bar 2, or System Menu Bar 3. Press SYSTEM MENU again to remove all the System Menu Bars from the TV screen. Press 1234on the remote control to select items or to change the setting of an item.

User Preference Settings Set your preferences for audio and video quality, depending on the

Current Subtitle Language If the current DVD has subtitles in multiple languages, select a language here. Details are on page 27.

Current Audio Language If a DVD has multiple languages, choose one here. If a Video CD has information recorded on separate left and right audio channels, choose to listen to the left channel (LL), right channel (RR), or both (LR) channels. Details are on page 27.

Forward and Reverse Searching

On a DVD or Video CD, to search the Disc at four times the normal speed, press and hold H or G for about two seconds during playback. To search at 32 times the normal

speed, press and hold H or G again.The sound will be mute.

On an Audio CD or SACD, to search the Disc at four times the normal speed, press and hold H or G for about two seconds during playback. Sound will be

intermittent.To search at eight times the normal speed, press and hold H or G again.The sound will be mute. Each press and hold of H or G switches between the slower and faster search speed.

To end the search, press PLAY 2to resume playback or press STOP C to stop playback.

Slow Motion

During playback, press SYSTEM MENU to access the System Menu Bar.

Press 2 repeatedly to select H Slow motion in the System Menu Bar.

Press 4 to enter the Slow motion menu.

Playback will pause.

-1/8 (backward), or 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 or 1 (forward). Sound will be

mute during slow motion playback. For example, select 1/2 to play the Disc forward at half the regular speed. Select 1 to play the Disc at normal speed again. Time Search

Time Search lets you choose a specific elapsed playing time at which you want to begin Disc playback.

Press SYSTEM MENU.

Press 2 repeatedly to select Time Search.

Press 4. Playback will pause; a time edit box will appear, showing the elapsed playing time of the current Disc, or the point at which the Disc is currently.

Press the Number buttons to enter the time at which you want playback to begin. Enter the hour, minute, and second

from left to right in the box. Make sure the time you enter is within the total playing time of the current Title/Track.

Press OK. After a few seconds, playback will resume at the point you selected. Or, if you entered an invalid time, the incorrect information will blink in the time edit box. Enter a time that is available in the current Title/Track and press OK again.

Press SYSTEM MENU to remove the System Menu Bar.

Camera Angle

Some DVDs include scenes recorded from different angles.You can watch these different angles if the Angle Symbol appears during DVD playback. If the DVD was not recorded with different angles, this feature is not available. Check the DVD case first to see if multiple angles are available.

During DVD playback, the Angle Symbol (see below) will appear in the top left corner of the TV screen if multiple angles are available. The current angle and the total number of angles available will appear. In the example below, you are currently watching angle 2 of the two available angles.

While the Angle symbol appears, press 4 or 3 or the Number buttons to select the angle from which you want to watch the current scene.

Zoom

Zooming lets you enlarge the video image during playback and pan through the enlarged image.

Press ZOOM during playback. a Zoom will be selected in the System Menu Bar.

Within five seconds, press 3 or 4 to choose 1.33, 2 or 4. The picture will play at 1.33, 2, or 4 times the normal size.

To move within the enlarged picture, or “pan,” press OK. Then, press 1234to move to the bottom, top, left, or right of the picture.

Press OK to remove the System Menu Bar.

To return the picture to its normal size, press ZOOM, then press 4 or 3 to select off, then press OK.

When the Disc reaches the point at which you want repeated playback to begin, press REPEAT A-B. This sets

Point A, or the point at which repeated playback will begin. REPEAT A will appear on the display panel briefly.

When the Disc reaches the point at which you want to end the segment, press REPEAT A-B again. This sets Point

B, or the point at which repeated playback will end.The segment will begin playing repeatedly. REPEAT A-B will appear on the display panel briefly. Set Point B before the end of the current Track or Title.

To resume regular playback, press REPEAT A-B again.

• Some Video CDs or Super Video CDs are recorded on multiple audio channels. For example, a Karaoke Disc may record music on the left channel and vocals on the right channel. Press AUDIO repeatedly during playback to choose an audio channel. Choose LR to hear both channels simultaneously (for example, the music and the vocals together). Choose LL to hear only the left channel. Choose RR to hear only the right channel.

Scanning plays the first 10 seconds of each Chapter/Track on the Disc.

Press SCAN during playback. Starting at the beginning of the current Chapter/Track, the first 10 seconds of each Chapter/Track will play. SCAN will appear briefly on the Player’s display panel.

To continue playback from a Chapter/Track, press SCAN again or press PLAY 2. SCAN OFF will appear briefly on the

Player’s display panel. Otherwise, scanning stops at the end of the Disc.

Shuffle

On a DVD, this shuffles the playing order of Chapters within a Title, if the Title includes more than one Chapter. On an Audio CD,Video CD, or SACD, activating Shuffle will play all the Tracks in random order.

Press SHUFFLE. SHUFFLE will appear briefly on the Player’s display panel.The Tracks or Chapters will begin playing in random order.

To return to normal order playback, press SHUFFLE again. Regular playback will resume from the current

Access Control limits viewing of Discs that exceed the limits you set.This feature will not limit viewing if the Disc manufacturer did not code the Disc. Philips cannot guarantee the availability of Access Control with all Discs, and therefore denies any liability associated with unintended watching of Discs. Make sure your Discs play according to your Access Control settings before you allow children access to the DVD Player.

Changing Your Code

Press SYSTEM MENU. will be selected.

Press 4 repeatedly to select , then press 2. Access control will be selected.

Press 2 again, then press the Number buttons to enter your old four-digit code.

When doing this the first time, enter any four numbers you prefer. You will have to enter the same code, exactly, twice.This will set your code for the first time. Press SYSTEM MENU if this is your first time setting the code.You are finished.

Press 4 repeatedly to select Change code.Then, press 2.

Press four Number buttons to enter the new four-digit code.Then, while Confirm code appears in the menu, enter it again - exactly - to confirm it.

Play Once/Play Always

With Play once or Play always, you can disable or enable viewing of a specific Disc.The Player memorizes settings for 120 Discs.When you select Play Always, the Disc currently in the Player moves to the top of the list.When the list is full and you add a new Disc, the last Disc in the list will drop out of the list.

Insert a Disc. The Access Control message will appear on the TV screen if the current Disc is Locked. PIN will appear on the Player’s display panel.

Press 3 or 4 to select Play once or Play always.Then, press the Number buttons to enter your four-digit code.

●If you select Play Once, the Disc can play as long as it is in the

Player and the Player power is On.

●If you select Play Always, the Disc will play always, even if you

set Child Lock to Ç (Locked).

If you later want to lock the Disc so it will not play always:

When you insert the Disc, playback begins automatically and safe

Setting Parental Levels

DVDs may contain alternative scenes that conform to the Parental Level, or movie rating, that you select.The Parental Level may apply to the complete Disc or to certain scenes on the Disc. Follow the steps below to set the Parental Level at which you want Discs to play.

Press SYSTEM MENU. will be highlighted.

Press 4 repeatedly to select , then press 2. Access control will be highlighted.

Press 2 again, then press the Number buttons to enter your four-digit code.

Press 4 to select Parental level, then press 2.

Press 3 or 4 or the Number buttons (0-8) to select a rating, then press OK.

Select “0” (– –) to deactivate Parental level. Or, choose a rating between 1-8; Discs or scenes with the same rating or lower will play. Higher rated Discs or scenes will not play unless you enter your 4-digit code. Follow the directions given by the Disc to enter your code and start playback.

Press SYSTEM MENU to remove the menus.

Changing the Country

If a Disc has Parental Level coding, the codings are applicable only for the country specified on the Disc. The Disc manufacturer sets these codings. For example, a Disc may be coded at Level 3 for the United States. So, for some Discs, you may need to choose the Country for which the Disc is coded in order for the Disc to play at the Parental Level you select. Parental Level details are on page 31.

Video Programming (FTS) 33

Favorite Track Selection (FTS) lets you play your favorite Titles/Chapters or Tracks/Indexes in the order you select.An FTS Program can contain 20 items (Titles, Chapters, etc.).

Setting a Program

Press FTS while a DVD or Video CD is in the Player.

c Favorite Track Selection will be selected in the System Menu Bar.

Within five seconds, press 4 repeatedly to select the Title or Track line in the FTS menu, then press 2 or 1 to select a Title/Track number you want. To put the entire Title/Track in the Program, press OK.

(The Title/Track number will show in the Program line.)

To put only a Chapter/Index in the Program, go to step 3.

To play only a certain Chapter/Index within a Title/Track, press 4 to select the Chapter or Index line. Press 2 or 1 to select a Chapter/Index number, then press OK. The

Title/Chapter or Track/Index number will show in the Program line. Continue steps 2-3 until you enter all the Chapters/Indexes/Titles/Tracks you want. If you have an incorrect Title/Track/Chapter/Index in the Program, press 3 or 4 to select the Program line, then press 2 or 1 to select the Title/Track/Chapter/Index you want to erase, then press OK.

Press 3 to select FTS, then press 2 or 1 to choose On or Off.Then press OK. If you choose Off, playback will continue

from its current point. If you select On, the Program will begin playing as you specified. If you want to erase the Program instead, press 4 repeatedly to select Clear all, then press OK.

Press SYSTEM MENU to remove the System Menu Bar.

34 Audio Programming (FTS)

An Audio CD Favorite Track Selection (FTS) lets you play your favorite Tracks in the order you set.An FTS Program can contain 20 Tracks.

Setting a Program

Put an Audio CD in the Player. Press STOP C to stop playback if necessary.

Press 4 to select the Track line in the FTS menu.

Press 2 or 1 to select a Track number, then press OK. The selected Track will show in the Program line. Repeat step 3 until you add all the Tracks you want. To erase a Track from the Program, press 4 to select the Program line, then press 2 or 1 to select a Track number, then press OK. The Track will disappear from the Program.

Press 3 or 4 to select the FTS line, then press 2 or 1 to choose On or Off, then press OK.

To erase the Program, press 4 to select Clear All, then press OK.

Press PLAY 2 to start playback. If you set FTS to On at step 4, the Program will play. If you set FTS to Off at step 4,Tracks will play in normal order when you resume playback.

Playing MP3 files

When you insert a Disc with MP3 files, the first Track of the first Album will begin to play automatically. It may take

the Player several seconds to recognize the Disc. MP3 text may appear on the TV screen or the Player’s display panel.This could be the song title, artist name, track number, etc., depending on how you recorded the MP3 files.To access or remove the MP3 text, press DISPLAY.

Press 3 or 4 to scroll through the available Albums. Press 2 or 1 to scroll through the Tracks. Or, use the Number buttons to select an Album or Track you want to play. When playback is stopped, use the Number

buttons to select an Album. During playback, use the Number buttons to select a Track.

To play a Track,Album, or Disc repeatedly, press REPEAT repeatedly during playback.

● Press REPEAT once to play a Track repeatedly.

● Press REPEAT again to play an Album repeatedly.

● Press REPEAT again to play an entire Disc repeatedly.

● Press REPEAT again to cancel repeat playback and

resume regular playback.

• Only the following options are available for MP3 files: Stop, Play, Pause, Skip Next/Previous, and Repeat Track/Album/Disc.

MP3 is a compression method that makes digital music files up to 10 times smaller without losing significant sound quality. MP3 is common on the Internet, letting you transfer Tracks to your computer and onto a CD Recordable or CD Rewritable disc. Materials and equipment with which to make MP3 recordings are not supplied with this Player. MP3 files are recorded at a certain bit rate or speed. Slower bit rates (32 kbps or 64 kbps) let you record more using less Disc space, but have the lowest sound quality. Faster bit rates (256 kbps or 320 kbps) provide better sound quality but use a lot of Disc space.The average bit rates (96 kbps or 128 kbps) provide CD-like quality and are most recommended. Keep these characteristics in mind when making Discs that you intend to play on this Player.

This Player supports the following characteristics of MP3 files:

● File names ending in .mp3

● Names of Albums,Artists, etc., with a maximum of 30 characters

● Maximum nested directory of eight levels

Activating Playback Control (PBC)

This feature is available only on Video CDs.The Video CD must be compatible with Playback Control. Check the Video CD case for details.

Load a Video CD with PBC and press PLAY 2. The Video CD will show instructions or options on the TV screen. Use the Player’s remote control buttons as directed by the Video CD.

DVDs are recorded according to a color system, the most common of which are NTSC and PAL. NTSC is the most common in the United States. This Player is compatible with NTSC and PAL.Your TV also operates according to a color system. In order for a DVD to play on this Player, the color system of the DVD, the TV, and the Player should match. If all three are not the same, the DVD may play in only black and white, the picture may roll continuously, or the picture may appear distorted.This feature allows you to set the Player to match the color systems of your DVDs and your TV.

You can select predefined color settings or make your own Personal color settings.Although similar to adjusting Brightness, Contrast, etc., on your TV, these settings affect the picture the Player sends to the TV.

Press SYSTEM MENU. will be selected.

Press 4 repeatedly to select Color settings, then press 2.

Press 3 or 4 to choose Personal, Rich, Natural, Soft, or Animation, then press OK. You may want to play a Disc for a

few minutes in each setting to decide which you prefer.

If you selected Personal, go to step 6. If you selected Rich, Natural, Soft, or Animation, you are finished. Press SYSTEM MENU to remove the menus.

Press 4 to select Personal Color, then press 2.

Press 34to select Saturation, Brightness, or Contrast. Then press 2.

Press 34to increase or decrease each setting. Press 1 to go back and select a different item (Saturation, Brightness, or Contrast). Repeat steps 7-8 as necessary for each item.

When you finish, press SYSTEM MENU.

Discs are recorded in a certain sampling rate.The higher the sampling rate, the better the sound quality. Some Discs are recorded in a high sampling rate of 96 KHz, while most are recorded at 48 KHz. If you connected the Player’s red and white AUDIO OUT or FRONT MULTICHANNEL AUDIO OUT jacks to a Stereo as shown on page 13, or if you connected the Player to a six-channel Receiver as shown on page 15, choose a setting for Analog Output. Check your Stereo or Receiver and see if it is compatible with Dolby Surround. Then, follow these steps to choose the Analog Output setting that is most compatible with your equipment.

Press 4 repeatedly to select G, then press 2.

Press 4 to select Analog output, then press 2. Analog output may be selected already. If so, just press 2 to continue.

Press 3 or 4 to select Stereo, Dolby Surr-compat (Dolby Surround compatible), 3D sound (surround sound effect), or Multi-channel, then press OK .

●Select Stereo if your audio equipment is not compatible with Dolby

Surround, or if you connected the Player to a TV only or to a Stereo with Right/Left Audio In jacks. When you play Discs that were recorded in Dolby Digital 5.1, the sound will be mixed into the appropriate Stereo sound that will be acceptable by your two-channel TV or Stereo.

●Select Dolby Surr-compat (surround compatible) if your Stereo is

compatible with Dolby Surround. If it is, usually a Dolby Pro Logic logo will appear on the equipment.

●Select 3D Sound if you did not connect any rear or surround speakers

to the Player, but still want the effect of surround sound.

●Select Multi-channel if you connected the Player to a six-channel

Receiver as described on page 15. Multi-channel is the preset factory setting. The Multi-channel setting means the Player’s sound will be in Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS when available on the Disc. Dolby Pro Logic decoding will be available on DVDs or Video CDs that were recorded in Stereo. Dolby Pro Logic decoding is not available with SACDs.

Multi-channel (six-channel) sound will be heard only if the Disc is recorded in Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS. Check the Disc case for details on DTS or Dolby Digital 5.1 availability.

Turn on Clear Voice to enhance the clarity of Disc dialog (characters' speech and voice) and to position the speech toward the center of your listening space. Real Surround

Real Surround provides multi-channel sound during playback of Audio CDs, MP3 files, or Video CDs.You can use Real Surround to create an actual surround sound effect from your Audio CD,Video CD or MP3 discs, even though they are originally recorded in Stereo. The sound will come from the MULTICHANNEL AUDIO OUT jacks at the rear of the player.

● Before you begin, make sure you connected the DVD Player to a six-

channel Receiver. (Details are on page 15.)

44 Speaker Settings

The Player lets you adjust the speaker settings, volume balance, and delay time for your audio system.You only need to adjust the speaker settings if you used the Player’s MULTICHANNEL AUDIO OUT jacks to connect the Player to a six-channel Receiver (Dolby Digital or DTS) as shown on page 15.

delay time for only the Center and Surround speakers. If the surround speakers are about 150 centimeters nearer to the listening position than the front speakers, and the center speaker aligns with the front speakers, no adjustment is needed. If your speaker setup is different, adjust the delay times. First, measure the distance, in centimeters, from the front speaker to the listening position and from the surround speaker to the listening position. Subtract the surround distance from the front distance, then divide by 30.The result is the Surround speaker delay time in milliseconds. You may choose 0 ms, 5 ms, 10 ms, or 15 ms in the X column for Surround L and Surround R. Press 3 or 4 to choose the delay time in the X column for Surround L and Surround R that is closest to the delay time you calculated in milliseconds (ms). Or, if the Center speaker is closest to the listening position, measure the distance (in centimeters) between the Front and Center speakers, then divide by 30.The result is the Center speaker delay time in milliseconds. Wake-up Timer, Night Mode 45

Wake-up Timer

The Wake-up Timer turns on the Player within an amount of time you select.

Press SYSTEM MENU. Press 2 repeatedly to select in the System Menu Bar.

Press 4, and 600 will appear beneath , indicating the maximum number of minutes after which the Player will turn on.

Press 3 or 4 repeatedly to select an amount of time,

which varies from 30 minutes to 600 minutes in 30-minute increments.

Press OK to confirm your choice.

Press POWER yyto turn off the Player. The Player will turn on automatically at the time you selected. Disc playback may begin automatically and the unit may beep for a few seconds. Pressing any button on the Player or its remote control will cancel the Wake-up Timer.

Select a different language for the Player’s System Menu, a DVD’s Audio soundtrack, or a DVD’s Subtitles. Multiple Audio or Subtitle languages must be available on the DVD.

SACD Sound Mode 49

There are three types of Super Audio CDs: single-layer, dual-layer, and hybrid. Each may contain two areas of recorded audio or sound modes: High Quality Stereo and High Quality Multi-channel. A single-layer SACD may contain both Stereo and Multi-channel.A dual layer SACD may contain both Stereo and Multi-channel, but twice the amount. Hybrid SACDs have two layers, the CD and SACD layers. Within the SACD layer are the SACD Stereo area and the SACD Multi-channel area. If you have a hybrid SACD, you need to choose the layer/sound mode you want to play - CD, SACD Stereo, or SACD Multi-channel. Follow these steps to choose a Sound Mode.

Hybrid SACDs have two layers, the CD layer and the SACD layer. You can switch between the CD layer and the SACD layer when playback is stopped. Press SOUND MODE. Sound Mode will be selected in the System Menu Bar. Press SOUND MODE repeatedly to

choose cd (the CD layer), st (SACD Stereo), or mch (SACD Multi-channel).

You cannot switch between the CD and SACD layers during playback.

If you selected st (SACD Stereo) or mch (SACD Multichannel), during SACD playback press SOUND MODE to switch between st and mch. The layer you select will play.

The Sound mode will appear on the TV screen: SA6 (SACD Multichannel or six channels); SA2 (SACD Stereo or two channels, right and left); or CD (CD layer).

Analog: Analog sound is available when you use the red and white audio jacks on your equipment.These jacks send audio through

two channels, the left and right.

UDIO OUT Jacks: Jacks on the Player that send audio to another system (TV, Stereo, Receiver, etc.).

Bit Rate:

The amount of data used to hold music; measured in kilobits per seconds, or kbps. Or, the speed at which you record. Generally, the higher the bit rate, or the higher the recording speed, the better the sound quality. Higher bit rates use more Disc space.

Coaxial jack:

Sends digital audio to a Stereo, allowing you to adjust the volume at the Stereo.The Stereo must have a coaxial in

jack.This connection provides the 5.1 channel surround sound.

Component

Video Out Jacks: Jacks on the back of the Player that send high-quality video to a TV that has Component Video In

jacks or Progressive Scan Component Video In jacks.

Digital:

Sound that has been converted into numerical values. Digital sound is available when you use the Coaxial or Optical

Digital Audio Out jacks. These jacks send audio through multiple channels, instead of just two channels as analog does.

OPTICAL

Jack: Converts electrical signals into optical signals before sending the audio to the Stereo. Optical audio is not prone

to external electrical influences and has less noise. Keep the protective cap on the jack when it is not in use; this keeps dust out of the jack.

A TV aspect ratio setting (4:3). Displays the video with full-height picture, with one or both sides of the picture

trimmed. Some movie companies refer to this as “reformatting the picture to fit your TV screen.”

No power

• Press STANDBY-ON on the front of the Player to turn on the Player.

• Connect the Player's power cord firmly to an AC power outlet.

• Make sure the AC outlet has power by trying another appliance in the same outlet.

No picture

• Make sure the TV power is on.

• Check the video cables. Make sure the cable(s) are fastened securely to the Player and to the TV.

• Set your TV to the correct Video In channel. These channels are usually near channel 00. Or, you may

have a button on the TV remote control that selects an Auxiliary or A/V IN channel. See your TV owner’s manual for details. Or, just change channels at the TV until you see the Player's blue screen saver on the TV screen.

• You only need one video connection. Refer to page eight to see what connection best suits your

situation.

• If you connected the Player to a Progressive Scan TV as described on page 12, set the

PROGRESSIVE/INTERLACE switch to PROGRESSIVE. Otherwise, set the switch to

INTERLACE.

Distorted picture

• Check the Disc for fingerprints. Clean the Disc with a soft cloth, wiping from the center to the edge

in a straight line.

• Sometimes a small amount of picture distortion may appear. This is not a malfunction.

• Set TV System correctly. If your TV uses NTSC, set the Player to NTSC. Likewise, the DVDs must be

in NTSC format. Details are on page 37.

The picture is distorted or the picture is only black and white.

• TVs are produced to meet NTSC or PAL color system standards. If the Disc’s or Player’s color

system is different than your TV’s color system, the picture will be distorted or colorless. However, you can change the color system of the Player by adjusting the TV System setting. In the United States, NTSC is the most common TV color system. Choose NTSC, PAL, or Auto, depending on your TV and your Disc. Details are on pages 7 and 37.

The sound is distorted during Disc playback through a Stereo.

• Make sure you did not connect any cables from the Player to the Stereo’s “PHONO IN” jack.

No sound

• Check the audio connections. Details are on pages 9-15. Remember, you only need one audio

connection. Refer to page eight to see what connection best suits your situation.

• Make sure cables are connected firmly to all equipment.

• Select another sound source or Auxiliary station at your Stereo or TV. See your Stereo or TV manual

for details. Or, just continue selecting the different sound sources or modes on the Stereo or TV until you hear sound from the Disc that is in the Player. Details are on pages 9-15.

• Check your Analog output or Digital output settings. Make sure you choose the right setting, based

on what equipment you connected to the Player. Details are on pages 40-41.

• Make sure your Analog output or Digital output settings match the capabilities of your Stereo or

Receiver. Details are on pages 40-41.

• When playing MP3 files or SACDs, you will not have sound if you use the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT

(COAXIAL or OPTICAL) jacks. Use the red and white AUDIO OUT or FRONT MULTICHANNEL AUDIO OUT jacks instead. Details are on pages 9-13 and 15.

• Make sure all the speakers are connected correctly (if applicable).Adjust the speakers if necessary.

• Make sure the Disc label is facing up. If you are playing a two-sided Disc, make sure the side you want

to play is facing up. Details are on page 16.

• Check the Access Control settings for the Disc. Details are on pages 29-32.

• Check the NTSC/PAL settings of the Disc and the Player. Details are on page 37.

• Check the Region Code of the Disc. The Disc must be coded for All regions or Region 1 in order to

play on this Player. Details are on page 7.

• See if the Disc is defective by trying another Disc. Make sure the Disc is not scratched or warped.

Carefully clean the Disc. Details are on page 7.

• Use a commonly available cleaning CD/DVD to clean the lens of the Player.

The Player's blue screen saver does not appear on the TV screen after you remove a Disc.

• Reset the Player by switching it off, then on again.

The Player does not respond to the remote control.

• Aim the remote control directly at the sensor on the front of the Player. Details are on page 18.

• Remove any obstacles between the Player and the remote control.

• Move closer to the Player and try using the remote again.

• Inspect or replace the batteries in the remote control.

The buttons on the Player or remote control do not work.

• To reset the Player completely, disconnect the AC power cord from the AC outlet for several

minutes.Then reconnect the Player to power again.

The Player will not select some features, such as Angles, Subtitles, or multi-language Audio.

• The feature may not be available on the Disc. If it is not, an “X” will appear on the TV screen. Check

the Disc case to see if the Disc has the feature. If the Disc does not have the feature, the Player cannot create the feature.This is not a malfunction of the Player.

The still picture is dim or dark.

• A still picture will dim or darken if you leave it on the screen for more than five minutes.This

dimming prevents the still image from etching itself into your TV picture tube or screen.To protect your TV, avoid leaving a still image on the screen.This includes video games, station identification logos, etc.

WHO IS COVERED?

You must have proof of the date of purchase to exchange your product.A sales receipt or other document showing the date that you purchased the product is considered such proof.

WHAT IS COVERED?

Warranty coverage begins the day you buy your product. For 90 days thereafter, you may exchange the defective product

for a free new or renewed product through Philips. From 91 days to one year from the date of purchase, you will pay a preset exchange fee to obtain a new or renewed product. Follow the exchange procedures on the next page. This exchange opportunity ends one year after the date of purchase.The replacement product is covered only for the warranty period of the original product.When the warranty on the original product expires, the warranty on all replaced products also expires.

When it is necessary for you to ship the product to Philips for exchange, you will pay the shipping costs for shipment to Philips. Philips will pay the shipping costs when returning a product to you.

WHAT IS EXCLUDED?

Your warranty does not cover:

• shipping charges to return defective product.

• labor charges for installation or setup of the product,

adjustment of customer controls on the product, and installation or repair of antenna systems outside of the product.

• product repair and/or part replacement because of

improper installation, abuse, neglect, misuse, accident, unauthorized repair or other cause not within the control of Philips.

• a product that requires modification or adaptation to

enable it to operate in any country other than the country for which it was designed, manufactured, approved and/or authorized, or repair of products damaged by these modifications.

• incidental or consequential damages resulting from the

product. (Some states do not allow the exclusion of incidental or consequential damages, so the above exclusion may not apply to you.This includes, but is not limited to, prerecorded material, whether copyrighted or not copyrighted.)

• a product used for commercial or institutional purposes

(including but not limited to rental purposes).

WHERE IS EXCHANGE AVAILABLE?

Warranty exchange is available in all countries where the product is officially distributed by Philips. In countries where Philips does not distribute the product, the local Philips service organization will attempt to exchange the product, although there may be a delay if the appropriate product is not readily available.

Please keep your sales receipt or other document showing proof of date of purchase.Attach it to the owner’s manual

and keep both nearby. Also keep the original box and packing material in case you need to return your product.

To exchange your product with Philips (per the warranty conditions stated previously), remember:

• If you exchange the product within 90 days of the original purchase, there is no cost to you.*

• If you exchange the product more than 90 days after but less than one year after the day of original purchase, contact

To obtain a replacement product from Philips:

1. Contact Philips at 1-800-531-0039 to determine the cost for exchange.

2. Complete the Exchange Form below.

3. Pack the product and its accessories in the original box or a suitable alternative.You will receive replacement

accessories with your replacement product. For packing details, call Philips at 1-800-531-0039.

4. Put the completed Exchange Form, a copy of the original sales receipt, and the proper payment amount into an envelope. DO NOT SEND CASH. Do not staple or clip these items together. Label the envelope “Return Documents Enclosed.” Place this envelope in the box with the product.

5. Seal the box with packing tape and return the product via United Parcel Service (UPS), insured and freight prepaid, to:
