you use only video cassette tapes that have been tested and
inspected for use in two, four, six, and eight hour VCRs, and which
are labeled with the |VHS| mark. The use of tapes that have not
been inspected for use in two, four, six, and eight hour VCRs may result in poor picture quality and excessive deposits on die video heads, which may not be covered by the warranty if damage occurs.
Note to the Cable TV System Installer: This reminder is pro vided to call the Cable TV system installer’s attention to Article 820-40 of the National Electrical Code, which provides guidelines for proper grounding - in particular, specifying that the cable ground shall be connected to the grounding system of the building, as close to the point of cable entry as possible.

Putting Batteries in the Remote Control
Remove the battery compartment lid on the bottom of
the remote control by sliding it in the direction of the arrow.
Place two AA batteries inside the battery compartment
with their polarities (+ and - ends) aligned as indicated.
Replace the battery compartment lid.
Erase Protection
Video cassette tapes have record tabs to ensure that recordings are not accidentally erased.
To prevent accidental erasure, break off the tab with a screwdriver.

To record again, cover the hole with cellophane tape.
Using the Remote Control
o Point the remote control at dieTV/VCR’s remote sensor,
o Do not put objects between the remote control and the
TV/VCR.
TV/VCR Maintenance
o In this TV/VCR, use only tapes with the IVH5I mark, o Make sure any light adhesive stick-on notes are removed from
the video cassette tape before putting the tape In theTV/VCR. Removable labels like these can jam die TV/VCR.
o Periodic maintenance is required to maintain yourTV/VCR’s con
tinued excellent performance.This TV/VCR has an automatic head cleaning system. However, the video heads will eventually require cleaning or replacement. Cleaning or replacement of the video heads should be performed by an authorized service cen ter.

8 Turning On the TYIVCR

Before you turn on theTV/VCR, make sure there are batteries in the remote control (details are on page five) and theTV/VCR is hooked up correctly (details are on pages six - seven). The instructions on this page work only when you turn on the TV/VCR for the first time.
Press the POWER button. The TV/VCR will come on and the language select display screen shown below will appear.

Press the F.FWD/+ button to begin automatic channel programming. AUTO SET PROCEEDING / PLEASE WAIT will
appear on-screen. TheTV/VCR will place all of the channels you
receive into its memory, so when you scan dirough channels using the CHANNEL Up/Down buttons, you’ll only scan through chan nels that you receive.When channels are programmed, CHAN
NELS ARE SET will appear on-screen briefly.Then theTV/VCR will go to the lowest channel programmed,
(If you try to program channels when there is no antenna or cable connected to theTV/VCR, programming will appear to take place, but eventually a NO TV SIGNALS ... message will appear on-screen. Connect an antenna or cable to the TV/VCR, then try again.You may need to follow the steps on pages nine - 11 instead.)
Now, you may use the CHANNEL Up/Down buttons or the
Number buttons on the remote control to select aTV/VCR chan
nel. Use the VOLUME Up/Down buttons to adjust the sound.

If you do not see any on-screen dis plays when you turn on the TV/VCR, check your hook-ups, then try again. If you still do not see any on-screen displays, follow the steps on pages nine - 11 to select a language and program channels. To skip this feoiure and play a tape immediately, insert a tape with its record tab removed. Playback will begin. Or, to sidp step 2, press the STATUS/EXIT button be/bre pro ceeding. All on-screen d/sp/ays will be in English.To skip step 4, press the STATUS/EXIT button before pro ceeding. Channels will not be pro grammed, and CHANNELS NOT
SET will appear on-screen briefly. You cannot program channels if you
are using a Cable Box.

10 Channel Memory

Although theTVA/^CR may automatically memorize the channels you receive when you turn it on for the first time, you may pro gram channels again. Follow the steps below to program channels.

Within five seconds, press the Number I button to add that channel or the Number 2 button to delete that chan nel. If you do not make a choice within five seconds, you will return to the previous screen. (If you make a mistake, press the Number 3 button to select another channel.)

12 Setting the Clock

There are three ways to set the clock; Manually, with Automatic
PBS Channel Selection, or with Manual PBS Channel Selection. With manual clock setting, you tell theTV/VCR. the current time.TheTVA^CR tiien adjusts the time accordingly. With Automatic or Manual PBS Channel Selection, theTV/VCR gets the current time from your local PBS station. It updates the time by referring to your PBS station broadcasts. If you use either Manual PBS Channel Selection or Automatic PBS Channel Selection, follow the steps on page 19 to have theTV/VCR update the clock according to your Time Zone. Cable Box users should set the clock manually. To set die clock manually, follow the steps on pages 12 -13.To set the clock using Automatic PBS Channel Selection, follow the steps on pages 14 - IS.To set the clock using Manual PBS Channel Selection, follow the steps on pages 16 - 17. Entries that do not match the TV/VCR's internal calendar will cause a question mark (?) to appear on theTV/VCR screen.
To make corrections while you are
setting the clock, press the CLEAR button until the space for the num ber you want to correct is flashing. Then enter the correct number.
To make corrections after you have
set the clock, start again at step I.
If you press the STATUSfEXlT but ton when you are setting the dock, theTV/VCR will exit Set Cock mode and return to the program you v/ere watching.

• To display the t/me, press the STA TUS/EXIT button, A status display, which includes the time, will appear on the TV/VCR screen. Deta/fe are on page 26.
• ff you press the STATUS/EXIT but ton while you are seWng the clock, the screen will exit Set Clock mode and return to the program you were watching. If this happens, start over.
• You must turn off the TV/VCR for several minutes during automatic clock setting. If the clock is not set when you turn on the TV/VCR, repeat the steps for Automatic PBS Channel Selection. If the clock still is

18 Daylight-Saving Time

When the Daylight-Saving Time feature is ON, theTV/VCR. clock
will automatically move forward one hour on the first Sunday in April and move back one hour on the last Sunday in October. Detoi/s are on page S3.

26 On-Screen Status Displays
A status display, which includes the current time, channel, and other information (see illustration of the status display at right), will appear when you press the STATUS/EXIT button or certain function buttons.You can bring up the status display at any time by
pressing the STATUS/EXIT button. Remove the status display by pressing this button again.The contents of the status display may
vary.
ON MODE:
o Whenever a function button (REW(ind)/-, PLAY/A,,etc.) is
pressed, the status display will appear for five seconds.
COUNTER ONLY MODE:
o When a function button (REW(ind)/-, Play/A, etc.) is pressed,
the status display will appear for five seconds. After five seconds,
only the counter will remain on-screen.To remove it, choose ON or OFF in the ON-SCREEN MODE menu. (There is an exception.When you press the STOP/V button, the status dis play will appear for five seconds, then disappear.)
OFF MODE:
o The status display will not appear when you press a function
button.The channel number will appear briefly when you select
a channel if channels are programmed.
To choose an ON-SCREEN MODE, follow the steps below.

Follow the steps below to play a tape*
Insert a tape in the TV/VCR. The power will come on* If the tape’s record tab has been removed, playback should start auto matically*

Follow the steps below to program theTV/VCR to record TV pro grams while you’re away from home.You can program up to eight timer recordings. For each one,theTVA/'CR will turn Itself on,
record, and turn itself off automatically. Before you begin make sure:

When you watch a program that is being broadcast with closed captioning, you can access on-screen boxes containing the pro gram’s dialogue (for example, what a character is saying), dialogue
in a foreign language, or information (such as a channel guide,
schedule, or announcements). Follow the steps below to select
closed captioning. Not all TV programs and commercials are broadcast with closed
captioning. Similarly, all types of closed captioning (second lan guage, screen text, etc.) are not always broadcast If closed cap tioning is not broadcast, you cannot receive it This does not indi cate a problem with theTV/VCR. Refer to your area’s TV pro gram listings for the shows offered with closed captioning.

Automatic Operation
The following playback features will always operate;
Automatic Playback
When you put a tape in theTVA/CR.the power will come on automatically. If the tape’s record tab is missing, playback will
begin. (If a timer recording is set, you may have to press the
POWER button to turn on theTVA/'CR. If theTV/VCR is turned off and a timer recording is set, theTVA^CR will not accept a tape that is missing a record tab.)
Automatic Rewind, Eject, Off
When a tape is played, fast forwarded, or recorded to its end, the TVA^CR will rewind the tape, stop, turn itself off, dien eject the
tape. If a real time counter memory is set, the TV/VCR will only
rewind the tape to the point at which the real time counter was
set to zero, then stop. The TV/VCR will not turn itself off or eject
the tape.
Memory Rewind, Power Off
When the POWER button is pressed while theTV/VCR is rewind
ing a tape, REW ^ POWER OFF will appear on-screen. The TV/VCR will turn itself off when the tape has finished rewinding.
If a real time counter memory is set, the TV/VCR may only rewind
the tape to the point at which the real time counter was set to
zero, then turn itself off.

Tape Eject
A tape can be ejected with theTV/VCR power on or off (but the
TV/VCR must be plugged in). If a timer recording is programmed,
a tape can not be ejected when the power is off. Turn on the
TV/VCR power, then eject the tape. Be sure to insert a tape and
turn off theTV/VCR power for the timer recording.
Automatic Tracking Adjustment
The TV/VCR has automatic tracking, which condnually adjusts
tracking to give you the best possible picture quality. With some
recordings, however, you may get a better picture using the manual
tracking controls (see below).
Manual Tracking
To adjust the tracking manually during tape playback, press the
CHANNEL Up/Down buttons on theTV/VCR.
NOTES:
• To return tracking to the position it v/as in when the TV/VCR was shipped from the factory, press the CHANNEL Up/Down buttons on the TV/VCR at the same time.
Tracking is returned to automotic tracfdng when a tape is inserted, or when the STOP/Y button is pressed to halt playback.

Playback Options

Forward and Reverse Searching (SP/LP/SUP)
When in Play mode, press and release the RFWD/+ button or the
REW(ind)/- button. A fast forward or reverse picture search will begin.
To return to normal playback, press the PLAY/A button.
Super High Speed Searching (LP/SLP)
When in Play mode, press the F.FWD/+ button or the R,EW(ind)/-
button, then press again.TheTVA^CR will now search in super high
speed.
To return to normal playback, press the PLAY/A button.
Viewing a Still Picture
When in Play mode, press the PAUSE/STILL button.A still picture
(frozen image) will appear on-screen.The noise lines will move
each time you press the PAUSE/STILL button.
To release the still picture and return to normal playback, press the PLAf/A button.
Helpful Hints
• Sti// mode will automatically switch to Stop mode after five minutes to protect the TV/VCR and the tope from damage.
• SP/LP/SLP means this feature will work with tapes recorded in Standard Play, Long Play, or Super Long Play. For details about tape

If you are having problems with yourTVA/CR., check this list of problems and possible solutions before requesting service.You may be able to solve the problem yourself.
Location
For safe operation and satisfactory performance of yourTV/VCR, remember the following:
• Shield it from direct sunlight and keep it away from sources of intense heat.
• Avoid dusty or humid places.
• Avoid places with insufficient ventilation. Do not block die ventilation openings at the top and bottom of theTV/VCR. Do not place theTV/VCR on a carpet, as this will block the ventilation openings.
• Avoid locations subject to strong vibrations.
• Do not place theTV/VCR near strong magnetic fields.
• Do not move theTV/VCR from a cold place to a hot place, or vice versa.
Time Selection

Electrical Shock and Fire Hazards
• Do not handle the power cord with wet hands.
• Do not pull the power cord when disconnecting theTV/VCR from the AC (alternating current) wall outlet. Grasp it by the plug.
• If water is spilled on theTV/VCR, unplug the power cord immediately and take theTV/VCR to an authorized service center.
• Do not put your fingers or objects into theTV/VCR cassette compartment.
• Do not place anything on top of theTV/VCR.
Dew Warning
• Moisture condensation may occur inside the unit when it is moved from a cold place to a warm place, after heating a cold room, or when the humidity is high.There is no warning that moisture has accumu
lated in yourTV/VCR. But, if you try to play a tape in aTV/VCR in which moisture has accumulated, the tape and theTV/VCR could be damaged.Therefore, if you try to play a tape and the tape Is destroyed, and you think moisture may have accumulated inside theTV/VCR, keep theTV/VCR power on (but do not play a tape) for at least two hours.This will allow theTV/VCR to dry.
TV/VCR will not record.
" Make sure the tape has a record tab (page five).
" Make sure theTV/VCR is not in Record Defeat mode (page 40).
TV/VCR will not perform a timer recording.
• Make sure the recording start and stop times are set correctly (pages 32 - 39).
• Make sure theTV/VCR power is off.
• Make sure the clock is set (pages 12 - 17).
• Make sure there is a tape in theTV/VCR.The tape must have a record tab.
• If the power fails, programmed timer recordings will not be lostThe programmed timer recordings will be restored when the clock is reset after the power failure. (The clock will reset itself automatically if you are using the AUTO CLOCK feature. Details are on pages 14 - 17. If you are not using the AUTO CLOCK feature, reset the clock manually: then, the timer recordings will be restored. Details are on pages 12 - 13.) The timer recording will not occur only if the timer recording vras scheduled to take place during the power feilure.
• Make sure theTV/VCR is not In Record Defeat mode (page 40).
TV/VCR will not perform a one touch recording.
• Make sure the tape has a record tab (page five).
• Make sure theTV/VCR is not in Record Defeat mode (page 40).
• Plug the power cord into an active AC outlet (page seven).
• Check your hookups (pages six - seven).
• Program channels (page 10).
The remote control is not available, or the remote control will not access the pop up menu.

TV/VCR has no power,
• Make sure the power plug is completely connected to an AC (alternating current) outlet.
A power failure occurred.
• Follow the steps on page eight to select a language and program channels, if necessary.Then set the clock (pages 12- IT).
TV/VCR power shuts off after 15 minutes.
• To save energy, the TVA^CR will shut itself off after 15 minutes when it is on a channel that is not receiv ing a broadcast signal (for example, a station that has gone off the air for the night).This is normal.
Channel reception is poor.
• Check connections, then program channels again (page 10).
TV/VCR does not have a picture.
• Adjust the antenna (page six).
• Connect the antenna or cable directly to theTVA^CR.
• Adjust the TV/VCR picture controls (pages 24 - 25).
TV/VCR has poor sound or no sound.
• Adjust the volume.
• Press the MUTE button to restore the volume.
Tape playback is poor or tape is destroyed.
• Adjust the tracking. Details are on page 49.
• If moisture has accumulated In your TV/VCR, keep the power on for at least two hours, but do not try to play a tape, Defoi/s are on page 52.
TV/VCR does not display closed captioning.
• Cancel Counter Only mode. Detoi/s are on page 26.
• Make sure closed captioning is available for the program. Refer to the TV listings in your local newspaper.
Remote control does not operate the TV/VCR.
• Aim the remote control directly at theTV/VCR’s remote sensor. Detoi/s are on pages five and 20.
• Remove all obstacles between the remote control and the TV/VCR.
• Inspect and replace the batteries in the remote control. Detoi/s are on page five.
Number buttons wonft work for channels above 69.
• Select CABLE from the INPUT section of the pop up menu, then let die TV/VCR program the channels. Detoi/s are on page 10.
TV/VCR can’t receive channels above 13.
• Select CABLE from the INPUT section of the pop up menu, then let the TV/VCR program the channels. Detoi/s ore on page 10.
A tape can’t be inserted into the TV/VCR.
• Insert the tape window side up, with the record tab facing you,
• Make sure a tape isn’t already in the TV/VCR by pressing the STOP/EJECT button on the TV/VCR,
• Gently push on the center of die tape. Never force a tape Into the TV/VCR,
• If the TV/VCR is-turned off and a timer recording is set, the TV/VCR will not accept a tape without a record tab.
A tape can’t be removed from the TV/VCR.
• Make sure the power plug is completely connected to an AC (alternating current) outlet
• If a timer recording is programmed, turn on the TV/VCR power, then eject the tape. Be sure to insert a tape and turn off theTV/VCR power for the timer recording.
TV/VCR ejects the tape when you try to start a recording,

The cylinder rotates when theTV/VCR is in Stop mode.
• To enable the quick play mechanism, the cylinder will rotate for about five minutes.This is normal.
Daylight-Saving Time
• VVhen Daylight-Saving Time is ON, the clock time will change automatically as follows: on the first Sunday of April, from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m.; on the last Sunday of October, from 2 a.m. to I a.m.
• During the April time change, a timer recording programmed to start between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. will not
record. A timer recording programmed to end between 2 a,m. and 3 a.m.will end when the clock moves
forward (2 a.m.).
“ During the October time change, a recording cannot be started between the second 1 a.m, and 1:59 a.m.
