Welcome to yourTV/VCR owner’s manual.

This manual describes two models: CCB134 and CCB194. Although the models may have a different appearance, both models operate exactly the same.The CCB 134 is illustrated in this manual. This manual has seven sections: Setting UpYourTV/VCR; Description of Controls; Basic Operations; Recording Options; Playing Options;Additional

Putting Batteries in the Remote Control

Before Using the TVIVCR 5

Remove the battery compartment ltd on the bottom of the remote control by pressing in the tab, then pulling up the lid.

Place three AA batteries inside the battery compartment

with their + and - ends aligned as indicated.

Replace the battery compartment lid.

Erasure Prevention

Video cassette tapes have record cabs to ensure that recordings

are not accidentally erased.

To prevent accidental erasure, break off the tab with a screwdriver.

To record again, cover the hole with cellophane tape.

Using the Remote Control

V Point the remote control at the TVA^CR’s remote sensor, then

press the COMBI button when using the remote control to operate theTV/VCR.. Point the remote control at the Cable

Box/DBS, then press the CABLE/DBS button when using the remote control to operate the Cable Box/DBS.

* Do not put objects between the remote control and theTV/VCR.

TV/VCR Maintenance

» In this TV/VCR, use only tapes with the IVHSI mark.The use of

other tapes may result in poor picture quality and excessive deposits on the video heads, which may not be covered by the warranty if damage occurs.

# Make sure any light adhesive stick-on notes are removed from the

video cassette tape before putting the tape in theTV/VCR,

Removable labels like these can jam theTV/VCR.

w Periodic maintenance is required to maintain yourTV/VCR’s excel

lent performance.This TV/VCR has an automatic head cleaning sys tem. However, the video heads will eventually require cleaning or replacement. Only an authorized service center should perform this service.

The remote control and its batteries are supplied.

To install a rod antenna (not sup plied), push the stem of the antenna into the antenna hole on the top of theTYA/CR. Connect the antenna wire to the ANT(enna) Jack on the

back of theTV/VCR as shown. Extend the antenna and adjust its length, direction, and angle for the clearest picture.

Helpful Hints

Before connecting an antenna or cable signal to the ANT(enna) Jack, make sure the pin is not bent. If the pin is bent, straighten It as illustrated, then connect the antenna or cable signal to the ANTfenna) Jack.

Turning On

Before you turn on the TV/VCR, make sure batteries are in the remote control and theP//VCR is hooked up correctly.

The instructions on this page work only when you turn on the TV/VCR for the first time.

Press the F.FWD/^ button to begin automatic channel setup. The TV/VCR will memorize all available channels. When

channels are set, CHANNELS ARE SET will appear on the screen briefly. Then the TV/VCR will go to the lowest channel pro grammed. (If you try to set up channels when there is no antenna or cable connected to the TV/VCR, programming will appear to take place, but eventually a NO TV SIGNALS ... message will appear on the screen. Connect an antenna or cable to the ANT(enna) jack on the TV/VCR, then press the F.FWD/^ button again.You may need to follow the steps on page 10 instead.)

Use the CH(annel) .A./V button or the Number buttons on the remote control to select aTV/VCR channel. Use theVOL(ume) ¿cs/v button to adjust the sound.

Helpful Hints

If you do not see any on-screen dis

plays when you turn on the TV/VCR,

check your hookups, then try again. If you still do not see any on-screen

displays, follow the steps on pages nine-10 to select a language and set up channels. To skip step 2, press the MENU

button. All on-screen displays will be in English. To skip step 4, press the STATUS/EXIT button. Channels will not be set up, and CHANNELS NOT

SET will appear on the screen briefly.

You cannot set up channels if you

are using a Cable Box.

Line Input mode will always be

stored in the TV/VCfCs memory as

channel 00. When you se/ect chan

Although theTVA/CR may automatically memorize the channels you receive when you turn it on for the first time, you may set up channels again by following the steps below.

TV/VCR distinguishes between TV channels and cable channels auto

matically, and theTV/VCR will memorize its available channels.

Wait for the TV/VCR to set up

channels.

Wait for a few minutes. When setup is complete, CHANNELS

ARE SET will appear on the screen.Then the programming of the

lowest channel number placed in theTV/VCR’s memory will

appear on the screen. Now, when you press the CH(annel)

button, you will scan only through channels you receive.

Helpful Hint

Line Input mode will always be stored in the TV/VCR’s memory as channel 00. You cannot select AUTO PROGRAMMING at step 3 if the TV/VCR is on channel 00 (AIV IN).

Repeat steps 3-4 to add or delete other channels.

Programming of the last channel you selected will appear.

Helpful Hints

Line Input mode will always be

stored in the TVIVCR’s memory as channel 00. Vbu cannot delete it. To review the channels memorized by the TV/VCR, follow these steps.

1) Press the COMBI button, then

press the MENU buttorr.

2) Press the PMV/A button or the STOP/Y button to select PRIM. SETUP. Press the EFWDI^ button.

3) Press the PLAYIA. button or the

STOP/Y button to select CH MEM ORY REVIEW. Press the F.FWD/>button. A list of programmed chan nels will appear on the screen.

4) If all the programmed channels don't fit on the screen, press the

F.FWD/^ button. If you do not

press the F.FWD/^ button within

10 seconds, the remaining channels will appear on the screen. (If there are no remaining channels, the pre vious menu will appear.) Or press the REW(ind)/-^ button to see the previous screen of channels.

5) Press the STATUS/EXIT button once or twice.

12 Setting the Clock

There are three ways to set the clock: Manually, with Automatic

PBS Channel Selection, or with Manual PBS Channel Selection. With manual clock setting, you tell theTV/VCR the current time. With Automatic or Manual PBS Channel Selection, the TV/VCR gets the time from your local PBS station.

If you use either Manual PBS Channel Selection or Automatic PBS

Channel Selection, follow the steps on page 19 to have the TV/VCR maintain the clock according to your Time Zone.

Cable Box users must set the clock manually.

To set the clock manually, follow the steps on pages 12-13.To set

the clock using Automatic PBS Channel Selection, follow the steps

on pages 14-15.To set the clock using Manual PBS Channel

Selection, follow the steps on pages 16-17.

Before you begin, make sure; «> TheTV/VCR is hooked up and turned on. « Channels are set up.

Tape playback is stopped.You can not use Automatic or Manual

PBS Channel Selection during tape playback.

# You make each entry within 60 seconds of the previous entry.

To display the time on the TV/VCR screen, press the STATUS/EXIT but

18 Daylight-Savings Time

When the Daylight-Savings Time feature is ON, the TVA^CR, clock will automatically move forward one hour on the first Sunday in April and move back one hour on the last Sunday in October. To turn Daylight-Savings Time ON or OFF, follow the steps below.

Playing

Follow the steps below to play a tape.

Insert a tape in theTVA^CR. The power will come on. If the tape's record tab has been removed, playback should start auto matically.

If playback does not start automatically, press the COMBI button, then press the PLAY/A button to start playback.

Press the STOP/T button to stop playback.

Press the REW(ind)/-^ button to rewind the tape.

Press the EJECT button to remove the tape.

Insert a tape in theTVAfCR.

S-VHS Quasi Play Back (SQPB)

This unit has a SQPB function that allows you to view a tape

recorded in S-VHS format. A tape recorded in S-VHS format will play the same as a tape recorded in normal format.This unit detects whether the tape is recorded in S-VHS format or in

normal format.

Helpful Hints

If the tape you want to play is already in the TV/VCR, turn on the TV/VCR power, then press the COMBI button, then press the PLAY/A button. Playback features and options are on pages 42-46. When you play a tape recorded in

S-VHS format on this unit, you can not get the high resolution that would be available on an S-VHS

VCR. Noise lines (black and white

streaks) may appear on the picture.

30 Recording

Read and follow the steps below to record a TV program.

Press the COMBI button, then place a tape with its record tab intact {see page five) in theTV/VCR. The power will come

on. Or, if the tape is already in theTV/VCR, press the

POWER button to turn on theTV/VCR, if necessary.

Press the SPEED button until the desired tape speed appears on theTV/VCR screen. Detoi/s about tape speed are

given below.

Use the CH(annel) /s/v button or the Number buttons to select the channel to be recorded. (Channels cannot be

changed during recording.)

Press the REC(ord)/OTR button once to start recording.

The REC(ord) light will glow.

* If there is not a tape in theTV/VCR, NO CASSETTE flashes on

the screen briefly.

Rerecording (Tape Duplication)

Make the connections shown above, using audio and video

cables. Make sure the source unit (VCR or camcorder) is connected to a power source.

The source unit will play your tape. Insert a prerecorded tape

in the source unit. If playback begins, press the STOP button on

the unit.

TheTV/VCR will record your tape. Insert a blank tape in the

TV/VCR. Make sure the tape’s record tab is intact.The TV/VCR

power will turn on automatically.

Point the TV/VCR remote control at the TV/VCR. Press

the COMBI button, then press Number buttons 0, 0 so that A/V IN appears on the screen.

Point the TV/VCR remote control at the TV/VCR. Press

the SPEED button until the desired tape speed (SP or SLP) appears on the screen.

Press the PLAY button on the source unit and the REC(ord)/OTR button on your TV/VCR at the same time.

Copying will begin.

Viewing a Still Picture

Viewing a Slow Motion Picture

ing inappropriate material on TV. SmartLock reads the ratings for programming (except for news and sports programs, unedited movies on premium cable channels, and Emergency Broadcast System signals), then denies access to

When you watch a program that is being broadcast with closed

captions, you can access on-screen boxes containing the pro

gram’s dialogue {for example, what a character is saying), dialogue

in a foreign language, or information (such as a channel guide, schedule, or announcements). Follow the steps below to select closed captions. Not all TV programs and commercials are broadcast with closed captions. Similarly, all types of closed captions (second language, half-screen text, etc.) are not always broadcast. Automatic Operation Features 57

The following playback features will always operate.

Automatic Playback

When you put a tape in the TVA/CR, the power will come on automatically. If the tape’s record tab is missing, playback will

begin. If a timer recording is set, the power will not come on auto

matically when you insert a tape with the record tab intact If a timer recording is set and theTVA^CR power is off, the TV/VCR will eject the tape if the record tab is missing.

Automatic Rewind, Eject, Off

When a tape is played, fast forwarded, or recorded to its end, the TVAfCR will rewind the tape, stop, turn itself off, and eject the

tape. If a real-time counter memory is set, the TV/VCR may only

rewind the tape to the point at which the real-time counter is set

to zero.The TV/VCR will not turn itself off or eject the tape.

Memory Rewind, Power Off

When the POWER button is pressed while the TV/VCR is rewind

ing a tape, REW POWER OFF will appear on the screen. The TV/VCR will turn itself off when the tape has finished rewinding.

If a real-time counter memory is set, the TV/VCR may only rewind

the tape to the point at which the counter was set to zero, then

turn itself off.

Tape Eject

A tape can be ejected with the TV/VCR power on or off {but the

TV/VCR must be plugged in). If a timer recording is programmed,

a tape can not be ejected when the power is off. Turn on the

TV/VCR power, then eject the tape. Be sure to insert a tape and

turn off the TV/VCR power for the timer recording.

Automatic Tracking Adjustment

The TV/VCR automatically adjusts the tracking to give you the

best possible picture quality. With some recordings, however, you

may get a better picture using the manual tracking controls (see

below).

To adjust the tracking manually, press the CHANNEL a./^ but

tons on the TV/VCR or the TRACKING .¿i/v button on the

SmartPicture

The SmartPicture feature allows you to improve the TV/VCR's pic ture when viewing sports, a movie, or video games; to improve the picture when the antenna/cable signal is weak; or to reset the picture controls to their original settings.

If you turn off the JV/VCR in FM mode, the V/IVCR will be in TV mode when you turn on the TV/VCR again. You may get better FM reception by repositioning the TV/VCR.

The TV/VCR’s FM radio has a built-in antenna with a band range of 88.0 ~ 108.0MHz. You connot record the FM radio station. You cannot switch to FM mode during tope playback, although tape playback is allowed while in FM mode. You must be in TV mode in order to select Line Input mode (A/V IN).

If you receive a weak radio signal, you may go to TV mode and switch between the internal (INT) and external (EXT)

antennas. When you select the external antenna, make sure your antenna or cable is connected to theANT(enna) Jack on the TV/VCR. Detoite are on page six.

1) Press the FM button to return to TV mode if necessary.

The TV/VCR may find other remote controls. If this occurs, you can program theTV/VCR to find only its remote control. Follow the steps below.

Within 10 seconds, use the Number buttons to enter the

number of programs that you want to skip. Enter a zero

before single-digit numbers. For example, to skip three programs, press Number buttons 0,3. If you do not make an entry within 10 seconds, theTV/VCR will exit Index Search mode.

Within 10 seconds, press the F.FWD/^ button or the REW(ind)/-^ button to skip forward or backward. The

TV/VCR will fast forward or rewind to the beginning of the desired program, then begin playback. (The program numbers count down on the screen as the searching progresses.TV pro gramming will appear during the search.)

Helpful Hints

Up to 20 index marks may be searched. This funaion will not operate In

recording mode.

Automatic Channel Setup: process in which the TV/VCR.

scans all available channels and places the ones you receive in its memory.Then, when you push the CHANNEL buttons, you only scan through channels you receive.

Bands: settings that allow you to tune channels.

• Antenna - VHP {very high frequency; channels 2-13) and UHF

(ultra high frequency: channels 14-69),

• Cable - all standard channels can be received without a Cable

Box.

Brightness: adjusting increases or decreases the brightness of

the color on the screen.

Color: adjusting pales or brightens the TV/VCR color. Dubbing: copying a tape using a VCR. HQ: high quaiity: a feature in the TV/VCR circuitry which pro

vides enhanced picture detail.

Line Input: The channel to which you set your TV/VCR during

dubbing.The line input channel is always channel 00 (A/V IN).

Mode: a TV/VCR operation. OTR: One-Touch Recording; a timed recording that starts imme

diately and records for 30 minutes to eight hours, whichever you specify.

Picture: adjusting increases or decreases the contrast of the pic

ture on the screen.

Sharpness: adjusting softens or clarifies the picture on the screen. Tape Speeds: how fast the tape travels during playback or

recording.

• SP (standard play) - ästest tape speed (recording time for a

TI20 tape is approximately two hours); best picture quality.

• LP (long play) - average tape speed; playback only.

• SLP (super long play) - slowest tape speed (recording time for

aTI20 tape is approximately six hours).

Tint adjusting changes the tints of the picture on the TV/VCR from

purple to green.

Location

For safe operation and satisfactory performance of yourTV/VCR, remember the following:

• Shield it from direct sunlight and keep it away from sources of intense heat

• Avoid dusty or humid places.

• Avoid places with insufficient ventilation. Do not block the ventilation openings at the top and bottom of theTVA^CR. Do not place theTV/VCR on a carpet as this will block the ventilation openings.

• Avoid locations subject to strong vibrations.

• Do not place the TVA^CR near strong magnetic fields.

• Do not move theTV/VCR from a cold place to a hot place, or vice versa.

Electrical Shock and Fire Hazards

• Do not handle the power cord with wet hands.

• Do not pull the power cord when disconnecting theTV/VCR from the AC (alternating current) wall outlet Grasp it by the plug.

• If water is spilled on theTV/VCR, unplug the power cord immediately and take theTV/VCR to an autho rized service center.

• Do not put your fingers or objects into theTV/VCR cassette compartment

• Do not place anything on top of theTV/VCR.

Dew Warning (Moisture Condensation)

• Moisture may condense inside die unit when it is moved from a cold place to a warm place, after heating a cold room, or when the humidity is high.There is no warning that moisture has accumulated in your TV/VCR. If you try to play a tape in aTV/VCR in which moisture has accumulated, the tape and the TV/VCR could be damaged. If you think moisture may have accumulated inside the TV/VCR, keep the TV/VCR power on (but do not play a tape) for at least two hours.This will allow theTV/VCR to dry.

TV/VCR will not perform a timer recording.

• Make sure the recording start and stop times are set correcdy. Detaife are on pages 34-37. Midnight is 12 a.m. Noon is 12 p,m,

• Make sure theTV/VCR power is off,

• Make sure the clock is set Details are on pages 12-17.

• Make sure there is a tape in the TV/VCR.The tape must have a record tab,

• With ShowGuard, you don’t have to worry about losing your timer recordings. If the power fails, pro grammed timer recordings will be restored when the clock is reset (The clock will reset itself automatical ly if you are using the AUTO CLOCK feature. Deteifs ore on pages 14-17. If you are not using the AUTO CLOCK feature, reset the clock manually. Details are on pages 12-13.) The timer recording will not occur only if the timer recording was scheduled to take place during the power failure.

• Make sure DEFEAT RECORDING is set to OFF. Details are on page 33.

TV/VCR will not record.

• Make sure the tape has a record tab. Details are on page five.

• Make sure DEFEAT RECORDING is set to OFF. Details are on page 33.

Helpful Hints (confd)

The remote control is not available, or the remote control will not access the pop up menu.

• Use the buttons on the front panel of the TVA^CR to access the pop up menu. Detate are on page 22. You can not enter numbers {for example, to program a timer recording) using the front panel buttons.

TV/VCR has no power.

• Make sure the power plug is connected completely to an AC (alternating current) outlet.

Channel reception is poor.

• Check connections, then set up the channels again. Details are on page 10.

TV/VCR does not have a picture.

• Adjust the antenna. Details are on page six.

• Adjust the TV/VCR picture controls. Details are on pages 26-27.

TV/VCR has poor sound or no sound.

• Adjust the volume.

• Press the MUTE button to restore the volume.

Tape playback is poor or tape is destroyed.

• Adjus^the tracking. Detoi/s ore on page 57.

• If moisture has accumulated in your TV/VCR, keep the power on for at least two hours, but do not try to play a tape. Details are on page 64.

TV/VCR does not display closed captions.

• Make sure COUNTER ONLY is set to OFF. Details are on page 28.

• Make sure closed captioning is available for the program. Refer to the TV listings in your local newspaper.

Remote control does not operate TV/VCR.

• Press the COMBI button, then try the other TV/VCR buttons,

• Aim the remote control directly at theTV/VCR’s remote sensor. Details are on pages five and 22.

• Remove all obstacles between die remote control and the TV/VCR,

• Inspect and replace the batteries in the remote control. Details are on page five.

Number buttons won't work for channels above 69.

• Enter channel numbers as a two-digit number. If you want to select channels 100 and above, enter channel numbers as a three-digit number. Details are on page 24.

A tape can’t be inserted into the TV/VCR.

• Insert the tape window side up, with the record tab facing you.

• Make sure a tape isn’t already in die TV/VCR by pressing the STOP/EJECT button on the TV/VCR.

• Gently push on the center of the tape. Never force a tape into the TV/VCR.

• If a dmer recording is set and the TV/VCR power is off, the TV/VCR will eject the tape if the record tab is

missing.

A tape can’t be removed from the TV/VCR.

• Make sure the power plug is connected completely to an AC (alternating current) outlet

• If a timer recording is programmed, turn on the TV/VCR power, then eject the tape. Be sure to insert a tape and turn off the TV/VCR power for the timer recording.

TV/VCR ejects the tape when you try to start a recording.

• Make sure the tape has a record tab. Detai/s are on page five.

The cylinder rotates when tape piayback is stopped.

• To enable the quick play mechanism, the cylinder will rotate for about five minutes.This is normal.The quick

play mechanism switches the tape mechanism from Stop to Play in just one second.

Use the Number buttons to enter the channel of the TV program you want to record.

Press two Number buttons for the hour(s) you want the recording to begin. Press two Number buttons for the minute(s) you want the recording to begin. Press I for AM

or 2 for PM. For example, for 9:30 PM, press 09, 30, 2.

Follow the instructions in step 6 to set the recording's stop time* (AM or PM will be set automatically.)

Press the POWER button to turn off theTV/VCR power.

With theTV/VCR on, press the COMBI button, then press the MENU button.
