Thank you for purchasing the Phase 3 Models Quick Time 3D EP. We're condent that the quality of your new aircraft meets and even exceeds your expectations. Before completing the nal assembly of your new aircraft, please carefully read through these assembly instructions in their entirety. Doing so will ensure your success the rst time around!
These assembly instructions are designed to guide you through the entire assembly process of your new aircraft in the least amount of time possible. Along the way you'll learn how to properly assemble your new aircraft and also learn tips that will help you in the future. We have listed some of our recommendations below. Please read through them before beginning assembly.

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS
This section describes our recommendations to help you decide which accessories to purchase for your new aircraft.
Please read through this entire section very carefully. We have provided you with recommendations that,
if followed, will result in a great ying aircraft. Failure to follow our recommendations may result in a poor ying aircraft.
HIGH-PERFORMANCE AND HOVERING BRUSHLESS POWER SYSTEM
The Quick Time 3D EP can be own using a variety of brushless direct drive motors. For the best ight performance (ideal for high performance ight and hovering), use the power system recommended below. For 'economy' aerobatics, we recommend the Alternate Brushless Power System. This power system will still provide spirited ight performance and is more inexpensive.

RECOMMENDED RADIO, RECEIVER AND SERVOS
You will need to use a transmitter with 4 or more channels and a 4 or more channel micro receiver. Ideally, the transmitter should feature both dual and exponential rates for the ailerons, elevator and rudder. The receiver should be as light as possible, preferably around 9 grams.
The servos you use should be the lightest available, yet still have an adequate amount of torque. We suggest using servos that weigh no more than 10 grams
and have a torque rating of no less than 0.8kg/cm (11oz/in). Cirrus CS301 or similar micro servos will work well.

A WARNING ABOUT WORKING WITH EPP FOAM
The Quick Time 3D EP is constructed of EPP foam. In addition to using 5 minute epoxy for assembly, you can use C/A (cyanoacrylate) for a lot of steps to reduce the building time.
We don't suggest using any type of C/A accelerator or "Kicker" since these products can damage the factory-applied paint.
Do not use any harsh solvents, such as acetone, to clean the airframe. Harsh solvents will damage the factory-applied paint and may melt the foam. It is okay to use rubbing alcohol. If you want to add more painted details to your aircraft, use water-based acrylic
paints and test on a scrap piece rst.

LITHIUM POLYMER BATTERY WARNINGS - PLEASE READ
WARNINGS AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR ALL BRANDS OF LITHIUM POLYMER BATTERIES
Please read and understand the warnings listed in this section. Make sure you read any and all warnings included in the packaging with your battery, too. If used improperly, lithium polymer batteries can be very dangerous, so please follow these warnings and suggestions at all times.

This product may explode or catch re. Serious injury can result from misuse. Serious injury, loss of property, re and death can
result from misuse of this product.

All instructions, warnings and cautions must be followed at all times. Failure to do so can lead to serious injury or re.
l
Do NOT use this product before reading and understanding all directions and warnings.

Do NOT overcharge. Maximum voltage for each pack must be followed.
l
Do NOT over-discharge. NEVER discharge below minimum volts.
l
Do NOT discharge at a rate greater than the maximum continuous discharge.

CHARGING PRECAUTIONS FOR ALL BRANDS OF LITHIUM POLYMER BATTERIES
l
Do NOT use the product if you do not understand the warnings and proper use of the product.
l
Always let the battery cool and "rest" between uses and charging.
l
To avoid over-discharging, only use a speed controller that is made for Li-PO batteries.
l
We recommend the use of a resafe container when charging or storing.
l
Do NOT charge inside your car or inside your house.
l
Inspect the battery before each use for swelling or other malformation. If the cells have ballooned, the battery MUST be discarded.
l
Set the charger to 1C (charge at 1/2C or less for the rst 5 cycles).
l
Check polarity and then connect battery to charger.
l
In use, do not over-discharge or exceed maximum discharge.
l
When handling the battery, remember not to poke, bend or damage the cells. The cell outer casing is soft and can be damaged.
l
Remember, the cells must never exceed 71 degrees Celcius (160 degrees Fahrenheit) for any reason.

TIPS FROM THE PROS
Cleaning Up the Airframe:
You may notice that the airframe has some small pieces of melted foam "strings" left from the hot-wire cutting process. You can remove these quickly by very lightly sanding the foam with 220 grit sandpaper. We don't suggest sanding the painted areas or the paint will
be removed, too. You can remove any larger strings from the painted areas by pulling them off with your ngers.
Test-Fitting the Parts:
Make sure the parts are test-tted together before applying glue. This will ensure that the parts t properly before gluing them
together.
Storage and Transport:
We do not suggest storing your aircraft in an extremely hot environment (like the back of your car in direct sunlight) for any length of time. The extreme heat could damage the foam parts and possibly damage the fragile components of the radio control system or battery.
Installing the Motor:
Even though measurements are provided to help you line up the motor at the correct depth so that the cowling will t properly, we suggest temporarily installing the cowling before gluing the motor mounting stick in place to double-check the t.
Cutting the Hinge Slots:
When cutting the hinge slots in the control surfaces, hold a straight edge against the side of the control surface to keep it from exing
and bending. Keeping the control surface straight will make it easier to cut the hinge slots along the centreline.
Gluing Smooth Surfaces:
When gluing anything that has a smooth surface, like the landing gear wire, pushrod wire or plastic, roughen the gluing surfaces lightly with 220 grit sandpaper. This will improve the glue's bond.
MOTOR INSTALLATION

IMPORTANT This section shows mounting two different types of brushless motors. Step 1A shows the installation of the KMS 31/08 brushless Outrunner motor, using the KMS stick mount adapter. Step 1B shows the installation of the radial-mounted KMS 2208/09 brushless motor. Follow the step that matches the motor type you're using.
STEP 1A: INSTALLING THE MOTOR - KMS 31/08 BRUSHLESS OUTRUNNER OR SIMILAR
q Motor Mounting Plate - 1

q Loosen the grub screw from the side of the motor mount, then carefully,
but rmly, pull the motor mount off the motor.
IMPORTANT Be careful not to damage the motor wires.

q Install the KMS motor mount adapter (available separately) onto the
motor, using the machine screw, hex nut and washer included with the adapter.
q Install the motor assembly onto the end of the motor mounting stick, using
two small wood screws (not included).
PRO TIP After ying the aircraft, you may want to add right and/or down
thrust to the motor. You can do this by trimming the mounting end of the stick at a slight angle. Please see page 19 for more information.
q Install your propeller onto the motor.
IMPORTANT Before test-tting and mounting the motor in the next few procedures, make sure that you install the motor mounting
stick so that the motor is towards the bottom of the fuselage.
q Remove the cowling from the fuselage and set it aside.
q Slide the motor mounting stick assembly into the moulded channel in
the fuselage. When positioned properly, the back edge of the propeller should be 121mm (4-3/4") in front of the front of the fuselage.
IMPORTANT You may need to cut the motor mounting stick shorter to
achieve the correct t.
q When satised with the t and alignment, glue the motor mounting stick into the fuselage.
STEP 1B: INSTALLING THE MOTOR - KMS 2208/09 BRUSHLESS OR SIMILAR
The KMS 2208/09 brushless motor features a rear-mounted propeller adapter and an aluminium radial mount that's compatible with the predrilled holes in the motor mounting plate.
q Install the propeller adapter and the radial motor mounting plate onto
your motor, using the screws provided with your motor.

q Install your motor onto the motor mounting plate, using three wood screws
(not included).
PRO TIP After ying the aircraft, you may want to add right and/or down
thrust to the motor. You can do this by adding thin washers between the motor mount and the mounting plate. Please see page 19 for more information.
IMPORTANT Before test-tting and mounting the motor in the next few procedures, make sure that you install the motor
mounting plate assembly so that the motor is towards the top of the fuselage.
q Remove the cowling from the fuselage and set it aside.
q Slide the motor mounting plate assembly into the moulded channel in
the fuselage. When positioned properly, the front edge of the propeller mount should be 121mm (4-3/4") in front of the front of the fuselage.
q When satised with the t and alignment, glue the motor mounting plate
into the fuselage.

STEP 1: ALIGNING THE WING
WING INSTALLATION
YOU'LL NEED THE FOLLOWING PARTS FROM THE KIT:
YOU'LL NEED THE FOLLOWING TOOLS AND SUPPLIES:

q 220 Grit Sandpaper with Sanding Block
q Set the ailerons aside for now.
q Carefully draw a centreline mark on the top of the wing, at the leading
edge, using the centreline joint on the bottom of the wing as a guide.
q Measure out 32mm (1-1/4") to the right and to the left of the centreline
mark (C/L) and draw two more marks (A).
IMPORTANT These two outer marks represent the sides of the fuselage and will be used to centre the wing.

q Carefully draw a centreline mark on the top of the wing, at the trailing
edge, using the centreline joint on the bottom of the wing as a guide.
q Measure out 25mm (1") to the right and to the left of the centreline mark
(C/L) and draw two more marks (A).
IMPORTANT Again, these two outer marks represent the sides of the fuselage and will be used to centre the wing.
q Slide the wing into the fuselage and line up the two outer marks at both
the leading edge and the trailing edge with the fuselage sides.
IMPORTANT You may need to lightly sand the wing opening, so that the wing slides into position easier.
q Use a set square to double-check that the wing is perpendicular to the
fuselage side. If it's not, you may need to remove the wing and lightly
sand down the higher side of the wing opening until you're satised with
the alignment.
STEP 2: INSTALLING THE WING
q Horizontal Stabiliser with Elevator - 1
q When you slide the wing into position, it's possible that the fuselage
sides on the bottom of the wing might get distorted. Use a straight edge to double-check that the fuselage sides are straight.
q When satised with the alignment, glue the wing to the fuselage, using
thick C/A.
IMPORTANT Make sure a generous bead of C/A is applied to all of the glue joints.
STABILISER INSTALLATION
YOU'LL NEED THE FOLLOWING PARTS FROM THE KIT:

STEP 1: ALIGNING THE STABILISER
q Set the elevator aside for now.
q Draw a centreline mark on the trailing edge of the stabiliser.
q Slide the stabiliser into the fuselage and align it. The notch in the leading
edge should t around the fuselage sides and the centreline mark you
drew should be centred with the middle of the fuselage.
q Look from the front of the aircraft at both the wing and the stabiliser. When
aligned properly, the stabiliser should be parallel to the wing.
STEP 2: INSTALLING THE STABILISER
YOU'LL NEED THE FOLLOWING PARTS FROM THE KIT:
q Rudder - 1
IMPORTANT It might be necessary to trim down one side of the stabiliser mounting slot to make the stabiliser parallel to the wing.
q When satised with the alignment, glue the stabiliser to the fuselage,
using thick C/A.
IMPORTANT Make sure a generous bead of C/A is applied to all of the glue joints.
CONTROL SURFACE HINGING
q Hinges - 15
YOU'LL NEED THE FOLLOWING TOOLS AND SUPPLIES:
q 5 Minute Epoxy
q Modelling Knife
q Straight Edge Ruler

q Masking Tape
IMPORTANT Even though C/A-style hinges are included, because they're being glued directly into foam, we've found that using 5 minute epoxy to glue them into place works better than C/A. The 5 minute epoxy allows a longer working time, too, which makes it easier to line up the control surfaces and hinge them properly.

STEP 1: HINGING THE AILERONS
q Sand a 45º bevel into the top and bottom of the leading edge of one
aileron, making sure that the bevels line up along the centreline.
q Mark the four locations for the aileron hinges onto the aileron.
q Carefully cut four hinge slots in the leading edge of the aileron at the marks
that you drew, then cut four hinge slots at the corresponding locations in the trailing edge of the wing.
STEP 2: HINGING THE ELEVATOR
IMPORTANT Make sure that you cut the hinge slots on the centreline of both the leading edge of the aileron and the trailing edge of the wing.
q Apply a thin layer of 5 minute epoxy to one half of each hinge, then slide
the hinges halfway into the aileron, making sure that the hinges are centred and straight.
Allow the epoxy to cure before proceeding.

q Apply a thin layer of 5 minute epoxy to the exposed half of each hinge,
then hinge the aileron to the wing. The tip of the aileron should be even
with the wing tip and the aileron should be pushed rmly against the
trailing edge. Use masking tape to hold the aileron in place until the epoxy cures.
q After the epoxy has cured, pivot the aileron up and down several times
to ensure free hinge movement, then repeat the previous procedures to hinge the second aileron to the other half of the wing.
q Sand a 45º bevel into the top and bottom of the leading edge of the
elevator, making sure that the bevels line up along the centreline.
IMPORTANT Make sure that the bevel is sanded into the front edge of the plywood elevator support plate, too. If you don't, the elevator won't be able to pivot down.

q Mark the four locations for the elevator hinges onto the elevator.
q Cut four hinge slots into the leading edge of the elevator, then glue the
hinges into place, using the same techniques that you used to cut the hinge slots and glue the hinges into the ailerons.
Allow the epoxy to cure before proceeding.

q Cut the corresponding hinge slots into the trailing edge of the stabiliser,
then hinge the elevator to the stabiliser, using the same techniques that you used to hinge the ailerons to the wing.
Remember, once the epoxy has cured, pivot the elevator up and down
+
several times to ensure free hinge movement.
STEP 3: HINGING THE RUDDER
q Sand a 45º bevel into the right and left side of the leading edge of the
rudder, making sure that the bevels line up along the centreline.
q Cut three hinge slots into the leading edge of the rudder, then glue the
hinges into place, using the same techniques that you used to cut the hinge slots and glue the hinges into the ailerons and the elevator.
Allow the epoxy to cure before proceeding.

q Cut the corresponding hinge slots into the back of the fuselage, then hinge
the rudder to the fuselage, using the same techniques that you used to hinge the elevator to the stabiliser.
Remember, once the epoxy has cured, pivot the rudder right and left

several times to ensure free hinge movement.

STEP 1: INSTALLING THE ELEVATOR AND RUDDER SERVOS
IMPORTANT The receiver is mounted directly below the canopy. If your elevator and rudder servo leads are not long enough to reach the canopy, install 305mm (12") long servo extension leads onto the servos now.

q Install the elevator and rudder servos into the servo mounting holes in
the back of the fuselage. Use a dab of 5 minute epoxy to secure them into place.
Because the size of servos differs, you may need to cut the servo

mounting holes larger to t your particular servos.
IMPORTANT Both servo output shafts should be orientated towards the back of the fuselage.
q Install the aileron servos into the servo mounting holes in the fuselage.

STEP 2: INSTALLING THE ELEVATOR CONTROL LINKAGE ASSEMBLY
IMPORTANT When you install the elevator control horn in the next procedure, you don't need to install the control horn backplate. The control horn will mount directly to the plywood elevator support plate.
q Install one control horn onto the bottom right-hand side of the elevator,
13mm (1/2") out from the side of the fuselage, using the three wood screws provided.
PRO TIP Drill 1.6mm (1/16") diameter pilot holes through the plywood support plate for the wood screws.

q Cut one pushrod wire exactly in half, then make a Z-Bend in one end of
one pushrod wire.
q So that you can adjust the length of the pushrod after it's installed,
carefully make a V-Shaped bend in the pushrod wire 25mm (1") behind the Z-Bend.
q Cut away all but one arm from a servo horn, then attach the pushrod wire
into the outermost hole in the servo arm.
You may need to enlarge the hole, using a 1.6mm (1/16") drill bit, to t
+
the pushrod wire.
q Centre the elevator servo, then attach the servo arm onto the servo,
making sure that it's centred and pointing down.
q With both the elevator and the servo arm centred, cut off the pushrod
wire 3mm (1/8") in front of the control horn.
q Lightly sand the end of the pushrod wire to roughen the surface, so that
the glue will stick to it when you install the clevis.
q Remove the backplate from one control horn, then slide the control horn
over the pushrod wire (through the centre hole in the control horn).
q Position the control horn so that the pushrod lines up with the elevator
control horn, then glue the control horn to the fuselage side. This control
horn will support the pushrod wire and keep it from exing.
IMPORTANT Before gluing the clevis to the pushrod wire in the next procedure, make sure to roughen the wire with 220 grit sandpaper, so that the glue will bond securely.
q Double-check that both the elevator and the servo arm are still centred,
then slide one clevis over the end of the pushrod wire and snap it into the outermost hole in the control horn.
q Glue the clevis to the pushrod wire, using a couple of drops of thin C/A.

STEP 3: INSTALLING THE RUDDER CONTROL LINKAGE ASSEMBLY
q Carefully trim away the innermost hole from one control horn, as shown.
IMPORTANT You must trim the control horn like this so that it won't hit the fuselage side when the rudder pivots right and left.
q Install the control horn onto the left side of the rudder, 76mm (3") up from
the bottom of the rudder, using the three wood screws and the control horn backplate provided.
IMPORTANT Be careful not to overtighten the wood screws or else you'll crush the foam.
q Make a Z-Bend and a V-Shaped bend in the second pushrod wire, then
install the servo arm onto the rudder servo, using the same techniques that you used to install the servo arm onto the elevator servo.
IMPORTANT The servo arm should point toward the top of the fuselage and the pushrod wire should be installed in the outermost hole in the servo arm.
q Remove the backplate from one control horn, then slide the control horn
over the pushrod wire (through the centre hole in the control horn).
q Position the control horn so that the pushrod lines up with the rudder
control horn, then glue the control horn to the fuselage side.
q Install the pushrod wire and the clevis to the control horn, using the same
techniques that you used to install the pushrod wire and the clevis to the elevator control horn.
IMPORTANT Before gluing the clevis to the pushrod wire, remember to double-check that both the rudder servo arm and the rudder are centred. Don't forget to roughen the gluing surfaces of the pushrod wire, too.
STEP 4: INSTALLING THE AILERON CONTROL LINKAGE ASSEMBLIES
q Install one control horn onto the top of each aileron, 16mm (5/8") out from
the inside edge of the aileron, using the six wood screws and the control horn backplates provided.
IMPORTANT Be careful not to overtighten the wood screws or else you'll crush the foam.

q Install both aileron linkage assemblies, using the same techniques that
you used to install the elevator and rudder linkage assemblies.
The servo arms should point down towards the wing and the pushrod wires should be installed into the outermost hole in the
+
servo arms. The clevises should be installed into the outermost hole in the control horns and the V-Bends should be made 25mm (1") behind the Z-Bends, too.
q After the C/A has cured, double-check that all of the control surfaces are
centred. If necessary, you can centre them by adjusting the width of the V-Shaped bend in each of the pushrod wires. Use a pair of needle nose pliers to make your adjustments. Opening the bend will lengthen the pushrod and closing the bend will shorten the pushrod.
LANDING GEAR INSTALLATION

STEP 1: INSTALLING THE LANDING GEAR WIRE
q Rubbing Alcohol
q Epoxy Mixing Sticks
q Epoxy Mixing Cups
q Push the landing gear wire rmly down into the mounting slot, making
sure that the landing gear wire is straight when viewed from the front.
q Apply a generous amount of epoxy to the plywood landing gear retainer,
then push the landing gear retainer rmly down into the mounting slot to wedge the landing gear wire rmly into place.
IMPORTANT Before the glue cures, double-check that the landing gear wire is straight when viewed from the front.

STEP 2: INSTALLING THE WHEELS
q Slide one wheel onto each axle and secure the wheels into place, using
the two plywood wheel retainers.
IMPORTANT Apply a dab of epoxy to the plywood wheel retainers to secure them to the axles. Be careful not to get glue between the wheels and the axles.

STEP 1: INSTALLING THE ELECTRONIC SPEED CONTROLLER
q Mount your ESC to the top of the battery mount, using a piece of
double-sided foam tape (not included). Run the battery leads out the front of the aircraft.
IMPORTANT Run the throttle lead through the slot in the fuselage at the top of the wing and into the cockpit area.
STEP 2: INSTALLING THE RECEIVER
IMPORTANT The receiver is mounted onto the fuselage oor, directly below the canopy. You can access it by simply pushing back the front of the canopy. The foam is exible enough so that it won't break and it will retain its original shape when released.
Use a Y-Harness to connect the two aileron servo leads together.
q Plug the servo and ESC leads into their proper slots in your receiver, then
mount your receiver to the fuselage oor, using a piece of double-sided
foam tape (not included).
q Run the aerial out the side of the fuselage and secure it along the side of the fuselage, using pieces of clear tape (not included).
Do not cut the aerial shorter. Allow the excess to hang beyond the back of the fuselage.

STEP 3: INSTALLING THE BATTERY
q Mount the battery to the bottom of the battery mount, using a piece of

STEP 4: INSTALLING THE COWLING AND PROPELLER
q Cut out the bottom of the cowling to access the battery, using the blue
Velcro (hook and loop material - not included).

q Slide the cowling onto the fuselage and double-check that it lines up at
both the top and the sides. The cutout in the front of the cowling should be centred around the motor shaft, too.
q Use a couple of pieces of clear tape (not included) to secure the cowling
into place.
q Double-check that you can remove and install the battery easily through
the bottom of the cowling. Adjust the cutout in the bottom of the cowling, if necessary.
q Install your propeller onto the motor.
This completes assembly. Please refer to the next page for information on balancing,
control throws, exponential and motor thrust settings.

BALANCE POINT
The Centre of Gravity (C/G or Balance Point) is 95mm (3-3/4") back from the leading edge of the TOP wing, measured at the sides of the fuselage.
WARNING For test ying and general sport ying, we suggest you balance the aircraft at the C/G recommended above. For 3D ying, you may want to experiment moving the C/G back in small increments until you're satised with the result.

Exponential 'softens' the response of the control surfaces around the neutral stick position. This makes the aircraft easier to control while using such large control throws. The Exponential values shown are given as a percent. Please note that different brands of radio control systems may call for + or - Expo. Please check your transmitter's owners manual for more info.
MOTOR THRUST
To ensure great ight performance and to be able to trim your aircraft properly, it is critical that you adjust the motor thrust as
necessary. When set properly, the trim for the elevator and the rudder should be neutral. Fine-tune the down-thrust and right-thrust amounts until this neutral trim is achieved.
q For the stick mount, carefully trim the end of the motor mounting
stick at a slight angle, so that the motor will have approximately 2º of down-thrust and right-thrust.
l
Check the operation of the throttle. Double-check that you're getting full power when the throttle control stick is at full.
If you're using a computer radio, you may need to increase your throttle channel's EPA setting to result in full power. (Refer to
+
your radio system's operating guide for further information.)
l
Check the condition of the transmitter batteries. They should be fully charged.
l
Check every glue joint in the aircraft to ensure that everything is tight and well-bonded.
q For the radial mount, add a thin washer between the top and
right side of the motor mount and mounting plate, so the motor will have approximately 2º of down-thrust and right-thrust.

Double-check that you've installed and tightened all of the servo horn retaining screws.
l
Double-check that the battery is properly secured into place. There's nothing worse than the battery coming loose during ight.
l
Double-check the balance of the aircraft. Do this with the battery installed and the aircraft ready to y.
l
Check the control surfaces. They should all move in the correct direction and not bind.
l
If your radio transmitter is equipped with dual rate switches, double-check that they are on the low-rate setting for your rst few
ights.
l
Check to ensure that all of the control surfaces are moving the proper amount in both low and high rate settings.
l
Check the receiver aerial. It should be fully extended and not coiled up inside the fuselage. Do not cut the receiver aerial shorter
or the range of your radio control system will be greatly reduced.
l
You should complete a successful range check of your radio equipment prior to each new day of ying, or prior to the rst ight of
a new or repaired model.
l
You should not knowingly operate your R/C radio system within 4 kilometers (3 miles) of a pre-existing model club ying eld without
a frequency sharing agreement with that club.
