Light is clever. On one hand it re assures us tha t th e
world is a familiar, tr usted a nd fri endly p lace. O n the

ages of people, places, objects or landscapes. P ENTAX
understan ds this fascination . That is why we have spent
decades n ding creative new solutions that s et the
standard in photography.
The new PENTAX K 200D is a prime exam ple. For people
who want more free dom, increased oppor tunity and
more pu re pleasure from their p hotography th e K200D
opens the door to the ulti mate expression of creativity:
cal featu res that the K20 0D musters make s it a leading
camera in its cla ss. It links its high level of performance
with a use r-friendliness that makes the en trance into
SLR photo graphy an inspi ring experien ce.
FRO M 0 T O 800 IN 1 SECO ND: P ENTAX PRIM E.
Demanding digital technology requires the highest computing power performance during data processing. The PRIME processor
(PENTAX Real Image Engine) developed by PENTAX ensures that the K200D packs all the computing punch necessary. Data
communication rates up to 800 MB/sec guarantee smooth operation without delays. This also allows the K200D to take a
series of shots at up to 3 pictures per second.
A L OT OF ROOM FOR FEELI NG: A 10. 2 MEG APIXE L RES OLUTI ON CC D.
Great feeling can be found in the details. The high resolving power of the K200D’s image sensor supplies photographs of
impressing depth and brilliance. It provides great photos in every sense of the word. The results of the camera are not only
captivating with its image quality, it can easily provide problem-free high-quality prints up to 50 x 70cm in size – and even
larger prints are possible with outstanding results. The 10.2 Megapixel resolution also means that impressive enlargements
can be made from a cropped area of the original shot without having to accept a noticeable loss of quality.
A P LACE OF STA BILIT Y: PEN TAX S HAKE REDUC TION.
Even photography must obey the laws of physics. One proof of this are images that aren’t perfectly clear due to camera
shake: if the camera is not kept sufciently steady at the moment the shutter is released the pictures will be blurred. The
PENTAX Shake Reduction system substantially decreases the possibility of blur caused by camera shake by effectively steading
your hand. This is done by increasing the range of shutter speeds that you can hand hold the camera for. The result is brilliant
photos in critical situations. An added bonus: since the Shake Reduction is integrated in the camera body it is fully func-
tional with any PENTAX lens.
A F INE D IFFER ENCE: PENT AX DY NAMIC RANG E ENL ARGEM ENT (DRE) .
Time and again we nd situations that push the limit of the camera to control high contrast levels. A good example: a picture
of a person in front of a brightly illuminated background will almost always turn out too dark. With the PENTAX Dynamic
Range Enlargement you’ll nd greater detail in shots taken in demanding conditions.
DON ’T GI VE DU ST A CHANC E: PE NTAX DUST ALERT.
Dust particles on the sensor can ruin the best pictures. That’s why PENTAX has rened the Dust Removal System in such a
unique way. Dust Alert is able to clearly locate persistently adhering particles and to accurately indicate their position on the
camera’s monitor. This makes it simple to remove the contamination with the Cleaning Stick that is available as an accessory.

“BL UR” I S SUC H A S ILLY WO RD. NOW S IMPLY I GNORE IT.
When you’re on the go with your camera most of your shots will be hand-held. In fast moving situations there is always
the risk of blurred shots due to camera shake. Whether the lighting conditions require long shutter speeds or because
the camera, for whatever reason, can’t be held sufciently steady.
The PENTAX Shake Reduction system substantially increases your chances of a getting a sharp image. When the camera’s
gyro sensor registers movement the highly efcient, opto-magnetical sensor technology ensures that the image sensor
implements a counter-movement neutralizing blur. The result: pin sharp images.
PENTAX Shake Reduction gives the photographer an additional hand-holdable exposure range of 4EV – that’s 4 full stops!
Here’s another important characteristic of the system to consider: it is an integral component of the camera body so it’s
fully functional with any PENTAX lens.
DUS T IS SERIO US MAT TER. TAKE IT I N YOU R STR IDE.
PENTAX Dust Alert is the logical and unique addition of the Dust
Removal Function. It has been shown that under certain condi-
tions dust particles that were not moved with vibration can remain
clinging to the sensor. PENTAX Dust Alert locates these persistent
particles and precisely indicates t heir location. The sens or can
then be easily and accurately cleaned with a Cleaning Stick that
is available as an optional accessory.
HER METIC ALLY SE ALED: DUS T AND SPLA SH-PR OOF B ODY.
With the PENTAX K200D all weather is photography weather.
60 seals on the body and 14 on the battery grip ensure that
moisture, dust and sand cannot wear at the camera. Addi-
tionally, the breglassreinforced polycarbonate housing with
high-grade steel chassis offers the necessary robustness to
stand up to the rigorous demands of daily use.

THE THIN G ABO UT SE NSITI VITY.
No camera – whether lm or digital – can capture
contrast differences to the same range as the human
eye. For example, the face of a person in a backlit
situation often raises problems. The same applies
to the intricate surface design of a bright object set
against a dark background. With the new Dynamic
Range Enlargement your photos take a major step
forward. The PENTAX D RE fu nction performs an
amazing feat: it extends the contrast range of the
picture by a full exposure stop.
The result: a more evenly modulated image with rich
details emerging from darker ranges and restored
detail in the brighter areas. These photos will clearly
show greater spatiality and tension.
Page 4
SEN SITIV ITY I S THE PROG RAMME : ISO RANG E AND SV A UTOMAT IC.
The K200D works within the ISO range of ISO 100 and 1,600. It also allows
you to manually select an interme diate value ISO. What ’s more, in the
automatic mode you can dene a specic range of ISO values from which
the camera can make the optimum selection depending on each shooting
situation. With the Sv-Automatic mode the sensitivity can be freely selected
with a simple turn of the adjusting dial. The camera will then automatically
select the optimum aperture and shutter speed. In the Sv-Automatic mode
the cu rrent ISO value can be seen in the v iewnder at any time by the
simple press of a button.
CON TROL IS TH E KEY: AUTO -BRAC KETI NG.
There are certain lighting situations that present the photographer with a
real challenge. It’s best to play it safe from the beginning and the Auto-
bracketing mode can offer valuable assistance. By taking a series of 3 expo-
sures ranging from under- to over-exposure you can be assured of a perfectly
exposed and successful shot.
ANY THING IS P OSSIB LE: PIC TURE MODES AND AUTOM ATIC F UNCT IONS.
Excellent picture results require precise camera settings. To handle most
standard situations the K200D offers a number of dedicated Picture Modes.
Among th ese special modes are se lections that ensure the best possible
portraits, macro or sport photographs. Another special characteristic of the
K200D: the camera can independently recognize the situation and condi-
tions in which you’re shooting a nd automati cally sele ct the best m ode.
Additionally there are various scene programs available that can, for example,
change the white balance or simulate use of lters so that you can further
inuence the nal results of your image.
For automatic operation the K200D offers various options: in the “P” setting
the camera adjusts all the settings automatically. The ISO-Priority mode (Sv)
calculates shutter speed and aperture based on your selected ISO value.
The Shutter Priority mode (Tv) selects the optimum aperture for the selected
shutter speed, while the Aperture Priority mode (Av) selects the precise
shutter speed for the set aperture.
ENO UGH E NERGY FOR 1001 IDEAS .
The new K200D not only produces astonishingly good images, but also an
astonishing number of them. The power management of the camera pro-
vides for extremely efcient handling of battery power. Four AA lithium cells
are enough for approximately 1,000 photographs. Even if you use the ash
a lot you can still take about 500 shots before recharging. Of course a full
set of lithium batteries is supplied with the camera.
K2 00D 07
11 POINT S TO LOOK OUT F OR: T HE A UTOFO CUS.
The expressive strength of a photo is substantially determined by the focus point. The 11-Point
Autofocus sy stem of the K200D gives you a comprehensive choice of posi tion. Each of the
11 measuring points can be individ ually manua lly selecte d in order to specify the critical
focus po int according to your own decision. In the automat ic mode the camera recognizes
the closest object and focuses on that. In dynamic autofocus the focus is continually adjusted.
With selected PENTAX lenses the focus can also be instantly readjusted by hand or you can
always choose to focus completely manually. In each case the 9 cross and 2 vertical sensors
ensure razor-sharp results.
UND ERSTAN DING LIGHT: EXPO SURE MEASU REME NT.
Light is another crucial factor that exerts a strong inuence on the quality of a photo. The exposure system of the K200D works with
16 specic metering elds. These individual elds supply precise data regarding the varing brightnesses of the scene to ensure optimum
exposure. In order to evaluate individual areas more precisely the K200D also offers both centre-weighted metering and spot metering.
The exposure metering area can also be set in conjunction with the focus point for especially tricky situations.
You have the idea. For the rest you have the camera.

The processing of the image fundamentally begins the moment the picture is taken. Before releasing the shutter the photographer can
decide whether the colour tonal range should be neutral or bright and more saturated. The parameters for saturation, sharpness, contrast
and colour can be precisely adjusted and stored according to own preferences. Filters are additional inuential tools that are at your
disposal. Whether for colour or black-and-white photography, the PENTAX K200D offers numerous possibilities for manipulating your
images either at the time you’re taking them or later on while reviewing you shots.
Photos that are shot in RAW can be manipulated directly in the camera and stored as JPEG les. Many parameters can be inuenced
during manipulation: e. g. resolution, white balance, chroma, and sharpness.
THE BUTT ON WI TH A BRAIN : PRO GRAM MABLE RAW BUTTO N.
It goes without saying that the K200D lets you store your photos in the loss-free RAW format.
Changing f rom JPEG format to RAW format is no longer just in the realm of the dedicate d
specialist: now all it takes is the press of a button. Press it again to switch from RAW back to
JPEG. It’s as easy as can be, thanks to the programmable RAW key. You can specify which
conguration is to be used when pressing the button. Your options: save image as a RAW le,
save as both a RAW and as a JPEG le or only as a JPEG. Which mode should be active when
the camera is switched on is set just as easily. For maximum compatibility the RAW data of
the K200D is also recordable in the universal DNG format.
K2 00D 09
VER Y REA SSURI NG: T HE RE CORDA BLE DIGITA L PRE VIEW.
The digital preview is the ideal tool to examine the effect of the various camera settings. Indi-
vidual settings can be readjusted and ne-tuned while looking at the screen: you can alter
white balance, contrast or colour saturation and immediately see how the photo changes. The
preview picture can be also be magnied for more precise evaluation. An additional help: the
RGB histogram and the over-exposure warning are clearly displayed.
Often enough the rst preview shot is the one that you’re after. If this were the case, it would
be annoying to have to shoot it again to “really” capture it – that is why the K200D lets you
store the preview picture. Just another logical and unique function offered only by PENTAX.
AT T HE HE ART O F IT ALL: THE P ENTAM IRROR .
The optical viewnder is perhaps the central feature of SLR technology. It allows you to see
the scene exactly as it will be shot. A bright, clear viewnder allows for a perfect evaluation
of the focus and composition under unfavourable lighting conditions. With a 96 % image view
and 0.85x magnication the viewnder of the K200D offers a viewing quality that you simply
won’t nd in comparable cameras.
THE EYE CATCHI NG: A LARG E DIS PLAY M ONIT OR.
The K200D is one of the most compact DSLRs on the market. However, with a screen di a-
gonal of 6.9cm its monitor is one the largest. Not only in size, but also in image quality. Its
230,000 dots supply pin-sharp image viewing that can be clearly seen from an angle of up to
160º.

Sufcient lighting is the basic condition for successful photos. Since a signicant portion of photographic
situations are in poorly lighted conditions PENTAX has developed powerful ashes that supply accurate,
consistent light for you in any situatio n. The perfect commu nication betwe en your digital PENTAX SLR
camera and its PENTAX ash unit makes this possible.
For the K200D we recommend the AF-360 FGZ or AF-200 FG as standard universal ash units. Alterna-
tively the premium AF-540 FGZ, model that offers, among other things, a high guide number, bounce and
rotating ash head as well as a fast recycling time. Complex lightning systems present no challenge to the
K200D: its wireless ash capability can easily control several external ash units at once.
