Peerless Machine Automatic Power Saws Band Saws

Page 1
High
Duty,
Hydraulic, Automatic Power Saws
The satisfaction, the life, and the economy in operation which you enjoy from your Peerless Power Saw is dependant upon these three major factors -
1—
The engineering, the workmanship, and modern features in design . . .
2—
The quality of the raw materials which have been selected for use . . .
3—
The way in which the tool is operated and main tained in service . . .
True, Peerless has an admirable record in -Power Saw development. Peerless has made many major contribu tions to the general progress of metal cutting over a period of more than a quarter century. And, only one grade of materials has been considered good enough for a PEERLESS — THE BEST. But, the right Care in Opera
tion is equally, if not more, important. Through a careful application of the
which are contained in these pages, the Peerless operator will experience very little difficulty in turning out peak production at the lowest possible cost per cut.

the base of the machine by centrifugal pump and drains back. A Blanchard Automatic Pulsatpr'^lubricating system for all bearings can be furnished in place of the
standard wick feed oilers on any High Duty Machine.
FEED OIL PRESSURE
Use a light feed on new work until the proper feed pres sure is determined. Adjust the feed pressure by feed adjusting lever #H-27, on scale K, from 1 to 9, according to the size and kind of blade and work. (See diagram 6-D,
at the left.) Positions 1, 2, and 3 will take care of lighter blades, light wall tubing, and other small work. Positions 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are for larger work and a heavier blade.
Maximum oil pressure on Gauge "A" should be 140 lbs., when machine is running in low speed. Be sure that
feed unit is filled to oil gauge level with W10 SAE motor oil. Purolator screen should be clean at all times, and
extreme care should be taken to replace the cover to form an air tight seal. This is very important. Air leak age at the cover joint and a clogged screen will cause feed unit to become sluggish and pressure will drop.
(See diagram 6-D, page 6.)
FEED OIL PRESSURE FOR AUTOMATIC BAR
FEED
Maximum
oil pressure on conveyor pressure valve "E" should be 90 pounds. To adjust pressure on Gauge "E", start machine, and while machine is running with a light feed pressure, and vise closed on the work, set the feed pressure on gauge "E" by adjusting valve.
"D". (See
diagram 8-D, page 7.)
t
SETTING OF AUTOMATIC BAR FEED
(Diagram 8-D, page 7.)
1—
Height gauge collar //
1-0148, should be set so it will stop the saw frame carrying the saw blade about above work. Height gauge collar L-0148 and L-0147 must be set to synchronize.
2—
Then set lift rod adjusting collar, //L-0147 so that
control arm #L-60, on the valve shown on diagram below, will be up to its extreme height, arm, when properly set, will stop at the gauge point set at the factory, when the blade is at its extreme height, or Yz" above the work.
3— It is
very important that instructions jfl and #2 carefully followed. Machine will then perform its cycle properly and smoothly.
4— —
Set the stock gauge to proper height so it will touch the upper half of the work. To adjust stock gauge closer or farther away from the blade, loosen stock gauge lock nut #L-0154 and turn gauge adjusting tumbler #L-0153 to adjustment required. Lock it
again with lock nut #L-0154.
5—Movable vise jaw #475 should be placed about.
away from the work when in the released position. This adjustment can be made by means of vise adjust ing
6—Engage clutch on conveyor by pushing in hand
7—When required to operate carriage
screw #L-080. (See upper detail diagrams
wheel, //L-47. (See upper detail diagram page 4.)
manually, disengage clutch by pulling out hand
wheel, //L-47.

SHIFTING GEARS
Do not shift gears when machine is in motion. To shift gears, stop the machine and pull stop plunger 7/0120 out
■0! slide bar guide #0118, by pulling on plunger knob #126. (See diagram 1-D, page 2.) Then move plunger knob to hole designating speed desired. To ease gears in mesh, turn lower drive shaft slightly by turning on gear aligner /?X-60 on drive pulley side.
STARTING MACHINE
Follow all of the instructions in setting of automatic bar feed, when starting machine. Push on start push-button which is located in front of machine, and pull up on starting lever H-024. (See diagram 1-D, page 2.) To stop machine merely push the stop push-button.
__
Remove puralator cover #H-30 and lift out puralator screen #H-040 to clean it. (See diagram 6-D, page 6.) In placing the screen back to place the spring above it to keep the oil from lifting the screen up. In replacing the cover on the puralator,
care must be taken to seal it tightly.
Close veyor control valve #L-28 to operate machine manually.
(See upper assembly, page 5.) Disengage clutch on
conveyor by pulling out hand wheel.
Push start-button to start or stop the machine.
Tighten vise by means of tightening on vise screw with crank which is provided for this purpose.
Then engage feed by raising up on the starting lever.
All the mechanical functions in a full cutting cycle of
a Peerless High Duty Power Saw are summarized here
for your guidance: At the outset care should be taken to see that the saw
blade clears the work. The holding vise should be opened
just enough to allow stock to feed through freely.

The stock gauge should be set for the size of stock to be cut as shown on page 7, diagram 8-D.
To set the machine to bring the saw blade closer to the work, when less than 6" stock is being cut, lower the collars on to the second or third notch to suit the size of stock being cut. Care should be taken to see that these two collars synchronize. In other words, when collar #L-0148 for height gauge rod is lowered to #3 notch, it is necessary that collar #L-0147 for valve control rod be lowered also to //3 notch. This is absolutely necessary to permit the control valve to function properly. The first notch is for 6" stock.
After completing the cut, the saw frame carrying the saw blade returns upward.
With valve lever //L-60, has been lifted to its //I position. This opens the ports, both to the stock gauge cylinder and to the feed cylinder, and discharges the oil from the vise cylinder which releases the vise clamping the work.
The stock gauge cylinder piston 2od, #1-047, then pushes the gauging bracket #1-112 up to the finished pad at point
"A".
position for gauging the stock. The stock, when moving forward, must be clamped securely in the conveyor carriage, .so that when it contacts the stock gauge rod at point "B" it closes the gap at point "C". (See diagram 8-D, page 7.)
The pressure contacts at permit flow of oil through line jj4 to
//L-96. The oil pressure then forces the trip cylinder piston rod forward until it contacts trip catch L-62 at point "D", allowing the control valve lever L-60 to drop to #2 position. This automatically opens the ports to. the vise clamping cylinder which clamps the stock securely. The feed starting cylinder port is now open allowing the piston rod, L-037 to push forward lever //L-73, which is
attached to the feed unit starting shaft. This allows trip dog to drop into #3 position. (See diagram 7-D, page 6.)
This engages the feed unit and starts the saw frame carry ing the saw blade into the work.
At this point the gauge cylinder and the stock feed cylinder are exhausting. This allows the feed rack to return to position for another stroke and the stock gauge rod to move back out of the way to allow stock which is cut to drop off.
When the trip dog falls into position in the feed unit, it pulls lever L-61 back, allowing the control valve lever to drop to the #3 position and starting cylinder piston to return to its neutral position by opening the exhaust port. The trip dog releases when the saw frame guide contacts the trip rod, thereby disengaging lock dogs, and allowing the feed unit to return the saw frame upward.
