Theileria parva is a parasitic protozoan with a small genome of 10-12 Mbp. This species has four chromosomes and a plastome which contains the genes for the apicoplast organelles. T. parva infects lymphocytes causing Theileriosis or East Coast fever in cattle, African buffalo (Syncerus caffer), water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), and waterbucks.
T.parva uses Ioxdidae ticks usually Rhipicephalus appendiculatus as a vector. Protozoal sporozoites are formed in the salivary glands of infected ticks and are subsequently transmitted to cattle during feeding. After transmission, the protozoan life cycle continues resulting in Schizonts or Koch‘s blue body forming in the host lymph nodes. These schizonts subsequently invade erythrocytes and become piroplasms. The host blood cells are then ingested by uninfected larval ticks, once in the gut, T.parva undergoes sexual replication and is then released to the salivary glands for infection of new hosts.
The symptoms of East Coast fever include anorexia, fever and enlargement of the lymph nodes resulting in lymphadenopathy. Other symptoms including diarrhoea, nasal discharge and corneal opacity are less common. Infection with this pathogen can also cause a neurologic disorder called "turning sickness" which is the result of capillary blockage by the infected erythrocytes.
Several drugs are available for the treatment of Theileriosis. It can also be prevented by inoculating the animal with a high dose of sporozites harvested from ticks.

MAX
The PCR Max qPCR Kit for Theileria parva (T.parva ) genomes is designed for the in vitro quantification of T.parva genomes. The kit is designed to have the broadest detection profile possible whilst remaining specific to the T.parva genome.
The primers and probe sequences in this kit have 100% homology with a broad range of T.parva sequences based on a comprehensive bioinformatics analysis.
If you require further information, or have a specific question about the detection profile of this kit then please send an e.mail to help@pcrmax.com and our bioinformatics team will answer your question.
