Shewanella putrefaciens is a Gram-negative, rod-shape bacterium of the Shewanellaceae
family with a circular DNA genome of around 4.6Mbp in length. It is not usually a pathogen
of humans; however cases of benign skin and soft tissue infections, peritonitis, biliary tract
infection and bacteraemia in immuno-compromised patients have been reported. This
bacterium has also been found in fish, resulting in spoilage possibly by production of
trimethylamine.
S. putrefaciens is an opportunistic pathogen and associated with other bacteria in a wide
range of clinical infections particularly in polymicrobial bacteraemia. Naturally found in
water, aquatic environments are often implicated as the source of infection. The target of
this opportunistic infection is the skin with transfer to the bloodstream by as yet
uncharacterised mechanisms.
Predisposing factors to S. putrefaciens infection include prematurity, congenital pneumonia
and ulceration of the lower limbs. Infection in soft tissue can result in cellulitis, ulceration
and abscess formation. These infections are generally resistant to treatment with betalactam based antibiotics but sensitive to aminoglycosides.
Introduction to Shewanella putrefaciens
The PCR Max qPCR Kit for Shewanella putrefaciens (S.putrefaciens) genomes is
designed for the in vitro quantification of S.putrefaciens genomes. The kit is designed to
have the broadest detection profile possible whilst remaining specific to the S.putrefaciens
genome.
The primers and probe sequences in this kit have 100% homology with a broad range of
S.putrefaciens sequences based on a comprehensive bioinformatics analysis.
If you require further information, or have a specific question about the detection profile of
this kit then please send an e.mail to help@pcrmax.com and our bioinformatics team will
answer your question.
