Mycoplasma hominis is a bacterium of the Mycoplasma genus. Species within this genus have small structural size with short genomes and lack the ability to perform many basic metabolic functions. M. hominis lacks a cell wall and is only around 0.3µm in length with a genome of around 800K nucleotides in length in a circular confirmation.
M. hominis may be part of the natural flora of the genitourinary tract but can also cause infection in a wide range of tissues. This bacterium produces two membrane proteins that act as adhesions to allow attachment to glycolipids of the genitourinary tract cells.
In child delivery, transmission is seen from the birth canal to the new born but studies have shown that colonisation by this method is short lived, with transmission by sexual contact being much more common. Colonisation with this bacterium has been linked to a number of diseases including Pelvic Inflammatory Disease and post-abortum and post-partum fever. Infections leading to infections including interstitial pneumonia and pharyngitis have also been associated with M. hominis. M. hominis infections can be treated with antibiotics including tetracyclin although resistance is emerging.

The target sequence small within the glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase gene, has previously been shown to be a good genetic marker for M. hominis in other clinical real-time PCR based studies (A. Baczynska et.al 2004). The primers and probe sequences in this kit have 100% homology with a broad range of clinically relevant reference sequences based on a comprehensive bioinformatics analysis.
The PCR Max qPCR Kit for Mycoplasma hominis (M.hominis) genomes is designed for the in vitro quantification of M.hominis genomes. The kit is designed to have the broadest detection profile possible whilst remaining specific to the M.hominis genome.
The primers and probe sequences in this kit have 100% homology with a broad range of M.hominis sequences based on a comprehensive bioinformatics analysis.
If you require further information, or have a specific question about the detection profile of this kit then please send an e.mail to help@pcrmax.com and our bioinformatics team will answer your question.
