Haemophilus ducreyi is a Gram-negative, rod shaped, non-motile pathogenic bacterium of
the Pasteurellaceae family. Its genome is a circular DNA chromosome of about 1.7Mb
encoding 1717 genes. Human infection with this bacterium causes Chancroid, a
predominantly male genital ulcer disease which is endemic in developing countries and
found to be associated with increased risk of HIV transmission.
H. ducreyi is an opportunistic bacterium that infects its host via breaks in the skin or
epidermis. Disease transmission occurs via sexual contact (skin-skin contact with open
sores). After entry into the skin, bacterial presence stimulates epidermal cells and
fibroblasts to secrete IL-6 and IL-8 resulting in accumulation of polymorphonuclear
leukocytes and macrophage in the dermis and epidermis. The initial immune response
propagates cytokine release amplifying the immune reaction in a positive feedback loop
resulting in inflammation and ulcer formation at the infection site.
Shortly after infection, a small bump appears at the infection site which quickly turns into
an ulcer up to 2 inches in size. The ulcer is generally painful and bleeds easily if disrupted.
Antibiotic treatment can cure the infection; however strains resistant to ampicillin and
penicillin are becoming more prevalent.
Introduction to Haemophilus ducreyi
The PCR Max qPCR Kit for Haemophilus ducreyi (H.ducreyi ) genomes is designed for the
in vitro quantification of H.ducreyi genomes. The kit is designed to have the broadest
detection profile possible whilst remaining specific to the H.ducreyi genome.
The primers and probe sequences in this kit have 100% homology with a broad range of
H.ducreyi sequences based on a comprehensive bioinformatics analysis.
If you require further information, or have a specific question about the detection profile of
this kit then please send an e.mail to help@pcrmax.com and our bioinformatics team will
answer your question.
