Geosmithia argillacea is a filamentous thermophilic fungus commonly isolated from hot
environments such as geothermal springs and mine shafts. They belong to the genus
Geosmithia which includes species that were formerly classified as Penicillum. Due to its
morphological similarities to Penicillium, G. argillacea has often previously been
overlooked and misidentified as other pathogens such as members of the Paecilomyces
genus. The fungus has rough septate conidiophores bearing monoverticillate, biverticillate,
or terverticillate penicilli. It has cylindrical phialides with tapered tips, producing smoothwalled cylindrical or box-shaped conidia measuring 3.0–4.5 by 1.5–2.7 μm, which later
appear ovoid upon maturity.
G. argillacea has been repeatedly isolated from sputum samples of patients with cystic
fibrosis (CF). They form chronic colonies in the airways of CF patients with potential to
cause invasive mycosis and disseminated or systemic disease in patients that have
become immunocompromised. It has also been revealed that all fungal strains isolated
from patients with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) that were previously identified as
Paecilomyces variotii were in fact G. argillacea. G. argillacea shows a high level of
resistance to standard antimycotics leading to the requirement of surgical intervention in
some cases and a high fatality rate.
Introduction to Geosmithia argillacea
The PCR Max qPCR Kit for Geosmithia argillacea (G.argillacea) genomes is designed for
the in vitro quantification of G.argillacea genomes. The kit is designed to have the
broadest detection profile possible whilst remaining specific to the G.argillacea genome.
The primers and probe sequences in this kit have 100% homology with a broad range of
G.argillacea sequences based on a comprehensive bioinformatics analysis.
If you require further information, or have a specific question about the detection profile of
this kit then please send an e.mail to help@pcrmax.com and our bioinformatics team will
answer your question.
