Cryptococcus neoformans is a yeast-like fungi of the Sporidiobolaceae family and is a
known cause of Cyrptococcosis, a disease mainly affecting immune-compromised
individuals. The fungus measures between 4 and 6µm in diameter and is surrounded by a
polysaccharide capsule.
The fungi enter the lungs by inhalation from the environment where it can often be found in
soil. A pulmonary form of the disease can occur at the primary site of infection. However,
dissemination of the fungi from the lungs can lead to infections of the central nervous
system causing meningitis or other areas of the body causing diseases including skin
lesions, conjunctivitis, myocarditis, renal abscesses and arthritis.
Acute pulmonary infection is usually asymptomatic except in immune-suppressed
individuals, especially those with AIDS. Chronic pulmonary infections can lead to nodule
formation, segmental pneumonia and lymphadenopathy. These infections can usually be
treated with a course of anti-fungal medicines.
This species has 3 variants that can be found in geographically varied locations. Variant
grubii and neoformans can be found globally whilst variant gattii is found mostly in the
tropics but has also off the south-eastern coast of Canada.
Introduction to Cryptococcus neoformans
The PCR Max qPCR Kit for Cryptococcus neoformans (C.neoformans) genomes is
designed for the in vitro quantification of C.neoformans genomes. The kit is designed to
have the broadest detection profile possible whilst remaining specific to the C.neoformans
genome.
The primers and probe sequences in this kit have 100% homology with a broad range of
C.neoformans sequences based on a comprehensive bioinformatics analysis.
If you require further information, or have a specific question about the detection profile of
this kit then please send an e.mail to help@pcrmax.com and our bioinformatics team will
answer your question.
