For general laboratory and research use only
Clostridium sporogenes is the name given to strains of Clostridium botulinum that do not
produce botulinum neurotoxins (despite being closely related to group 1 C. botulinum
which are toxic) . In essence, they are considered virtually identical except for the
presence of the genes for botulinum toxin.
Being non-toxic they can cause food spoilage but pose no risk to human health. For this
reason it is important to be able to distinguish between C. sporogenes and other
Clostridium which may be toxicogenic.
Like other strains of C. botulinum, it is an anaerobic, motile, Gram-positive, rod-shaped
bacterium that produces oval, subterminal endospores and is commonly found in soil
Similarly, like other clostridium groups I & II, C. sporogenes has a genome of around
4.1Mbp arranged as a single, circular chromosome with a plasmid.
Genomically C. sporogenes is 4.1 million bp long with approx. 4,053 protein-coding genes
and 45 structural RNAs.
Introduction to Clostridium sporogenes
Due to the fact that Clostridium sporogenes are simply strains of Clostridium botulinum
that do not produce the botulinum neurotoxins, this kit will also detect C.botulinum.
The PCR Max qPCR Kit for Clostridium sporogenes (C.sporogenes) genomes is designed
for the in vitro quantification of C.sporogenes genomes. The kit is designed to have the
broadest detection profile possible whilst remaining specific to the C.sporogenes genome.
The primers and probe sequences in this kit have 100% homology with a broad range of
C.sporogenes sequences based on a comprehensive bioinformatics analysis.
If you require further information, or have a specific question about the detection profile of
this kit then please send an e.mail to help@pcrmax.com and our bioinformatics team will
answer your question.
